OP here. Why isn't pic related a more popular desination?

I very rarely if ever see threads posted about Macau (Macao?).
>>
Why? These threads only serve to encourage faggotry and self-appointed wannabe mod types. The kind of hit and run posters who create throwaway threads don't check catalogs or read stickies anyway. Why would you do this?
>>
>>1147954

You know that scene in The Terminator when Arnold as the Terminator is in the flophouse and the janitor or whatever he is outside of the room Arnold is in says "Hey buddy something die in there?" You see the algorithm in Arnold's head and you see his choice of responses. That's where I am.

Your post seems to be sincere, so I will operate on the assumption that it is. Simply put, I think threads like these give people the opportunity to discuss things they would not otherwise discuss save for starting a new thread themselves, which mind you, not everyone wants to start a new thread for every thought that comes into their head--arguably they shouldn't either--however, I think people should not be afraid to discuss those little things that pop up that they want some clarification and validation on. I see threads like these as a stopgap for people faced with launching into full OP mode or for folks who don't have their own general or for those who might be intimidated by board culture and are uncertain of what or how to post.

That some people do engage in 'faggotry' or attempt to mod or be janitor is unavoidable. You'll find that in most generals or on most boards.

In the absence of ego, if it really bothers you that much, I won't bump the thread anymore and I will let it 404.

I just moved to the States from Europe. Is it true that Latinos are more sociable and friendly in the workplace and that when they do small talk, they really want to get to know you?
>>
>going on roadtrip, US, semi-populated semi-rural

Latinos are a pretty diverse group. Some stick to their own, some like gringos. Even the friendly ones are less friendly to whites than to other latinos, unless they're from a different group of latinos in which case they can be pretty racist. Many can be quite friendly, I guess, but there also are a lot of bitchy ones.

You're trying to generalize a large group of people, like saying all white people are x. A russian isn't the same as an Englishman, right? There are different types of latinos, you have mexicans, 'ricans, dominicans, south americans, central americans, guatemalans, haitians/islanders, cubans, etc. And then you have variance of individual personalities.

So maybe, maybe not.
>>
>>1147983

It's not like I haven't taken a crap in the woods before, but isn't it illegal? There may very well be people around, it's a sorta popular destination within a few hours of a major city. I don't have a mini-shovel.

I think there are Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, and Cubans in that company. How do they treat Asians?
>>
>>1147985
I don't think it's illegal unless your trespassing on someones property. Key thing is to just wander in for a bit, a 5-10 minute walk into the woods and bury it.

> I don't have a mini-shovel.

TESOL
TESL
TEFL
CELTA
DELTA
Which one do I pick?

I know that the first three are offered through Oxford and CELTA-DELTA are offered through Cambridge. I know DELTA is for more advanced or experienced teachers. Most people start with the CELTA and whatever the Oxford introductory variant certificate is...I think TEFL?

Is one preferred over the other? CELTA costs like $2600USD near me whereas the Oxford certs cost like $1100USD. If there's no preference or guarantee that CELTA offers better access to higher paying jobs or more highly desired countries, I think I will stick with whatever the Oxford cert is...

Please advise...

I'm planning to travel from Colombia to Russia, and so far the quickest flight is one from Lufthansa which consists of a 11h flight from Bogota to Frankfurt, 1h 15m wait and then to Moscow.
I'm a bit skeptic, is that enough time? How likely it is that i would miss my second flight?

Another thing i wonder is what to do if my credit card doesn't have enough money to pay for the tickets? My credit card has a limit of $1000 USD but the tickets seem to be around $1800 or so. Can i use various different cards to buy it?
>>
>>1148017
it depends on where you're going

asia with the exception of maybe burma and bhutan requires none of them. lower pay areas with more competition such as south america or the middle east require higher quals depending on the country. the poorer countries require quals specifically because even though the pay is worse, it gets increasingly higher relative to the locals

none of them are worthwhile if you plan on teaching long term, in which case you should just go for a 2 year program.

so yeah, it depends on where you want to teach and how long you want to do it.
>>
>>1147953

I've got a flight into Asia that has a significant layover in Istanbul. I've been there before and really enjoyed myself, I'm thinking a nice glass of apple tea and a trip to a Hammam is really what I need after at 10 hour flight.

That being said, all the recent events in Turkey have made me very nervous. Is it safe? I mean, I know ISIS is active in the country, I really don't feel like getting my head cut off. Or caught up in a coup attempt. Or getting caught in a bombing.

Am I being paranoid or are my fears founded?
>>
>>1148693
So you would suggest a MA in TESOL or some equivalent program? Thanks!

>Right now I am learning French and I am with a host family for 10 days in France
>I want someone to speak French to, but I sense that the host family (an elderly couple) is hosting kids only for business reasons and are not that interested in cultural exchange etc
>Like they never eat meals with us, they are often in the private off-limit areas, the host dad only asks us if we will study French or go to the city centre during small talk and nothing else, I gave them a box of biscuit and they left it in a dusty corner on a cupboard, etc
>Host mom does small talk every now and then like ask me about my country and culture
Should I try to keep in touch with my host family for the sake of having someone to speak French to?
>>
>>1148867
Dude that's so sad. Frenchfag here, I hate French people for this kind of reasons.
If you wanna meet people who you can talk French with, you can try hanging out in bars (anyone that becomes chatty when tipsy will love talking French to you), or more intellectual places like libraries or cafe.

Where do you live?
>>
What's a good offline maps app for Android?
>>
>>1148684
1h 15m should be enough time but if your first flight is delayed then you're basically fucked for your transfer flight. The good news is that the airline will put you on another to get to your destination if that happens. The bad news is that it may be several hours later and/or may include another layover. But you can also try to go on standby for an earlier flight if that happens.

>Can i use various different cards to buy it?
Yes, you should be able to, but you will probably have to call to book the ticket since websites don't usually have the option to split the cost across numerous cards.

Question about longer term Europe travel regarding the schengen zone. Say I want to drift around for a year or more. I get that I can only stay less than three months in any given nation before needing a visa (and also triggering residency for tax purposes.) Do I need to leave the schengen zone entirely for 3 months before being able to return? Like for example, I can't spend a few months in France then immediately go to Germany for a few, I would have to leave the entire schengen zone for three months and fuck off to turkey or africa or something before being able to come back?

Sorry if this was explained before but I'm confused.

Small talk isn't really a thing to hispanics, at the end of the day. At least not American small talk. "The weather, huh?" etc. If a hispanic wants to talk to you they will, and if you put in effort to be friends, chances are you'll be payed back in similar efforts.

But idk, you said you're "Asian" from the UK and I know to you guys that could be Chinese or a Paki.
If you're a paki, prepare for a fair bit of racism, but it's not as serious as it sounds. More like prejudice and stereotyping.
If you're east asian, prepared to get called "Chinito", Japanese, Korean, any of them are referred to as Chinito. It's not offensive to us so don't be offended. None of it is meant to be hurtful.
>>
>>1149193
>Small talk isn't really a thing to hispanics
Nigga we do that a lot. Waiting in line for something? Small talk. Sitting close to someone in the bus? Small talk. Someone complains about service sucking dick? Small talk. Fruits are kinda expensive in the supermarket? Small talk. This is more prevalent the older the person is.
I have actually found in travel guides directed to us tips like "don't try to have small talks with euros like you do at home"

My friend took a train from Seattle to Chicago. For the most part he found it comfortable but it wasn't something he recommended just because of the amount of time it took, iirc a couple days to cross the country. Since you're asking then I'm guessing time isn't as big of a factor for you. You should spring for an actual sleeper and not just a seat otherwise it will be a really uncomfortable ride.

Next trip I'm taking will probably be one of those expensive freighter cruises (I fucking love ships and I kinda regret not becoming a sailor). Does anybody on /trv/ have experience with those? First poster here, so I don't know if this belongs in this board.

I'm from Germany and could easily travel to a vast amount of interesting european places in a few hours. Some of my friends have seen almost half the globe, while I always stayed at home.
Not that I'm not interested in other countries or cultures, it's just that I'm missing some kind of goal or purpose in simply travelling. Sure, I could hop on a train, ride to Paris and stand in front of the Eiffel Tower. But why? just to post a fucking selfie on Facebook?

I don't want to sound prickish or 'privileged', but what good is travelling if it isn't associated with a mission, or a quest if you will, to accomplish?
>>
>>1149072
Evanstone or the burbs homie? Go to Denmark or Budapest ;)
>>
>>1151088
That's like asking "what's the point of studying x if you're going to work in y".
For me it's not about purpose, it's about feeling and what it means to you. If you travel to "accomplish a mission" chances are you're not going to enjoy much. If you say "well i'm going to paris to see the monuments and history" and go just with that in mind you'll probably miss out a lot more the place has to offer (food, the people, etc). A much better approach would be "I'm going to paris to enjoy myself".

>Sure, I could hop on a train, ride to Paris and stand in front of the Eiffel Tower. But why? just to post a fucking selfie on Facebook?
I think you're misunderstanding something., it's not like taking the selfie is notwas the purpose of the trip, it's just a way for people to convey their enjoyment.
You don't go because you want to take a selfie.
You take a selfie because you are having a good time and want to brag about it.
>>
>>1151082
Any idea of the rough cost of travelling between the countries
>>
>>1151095
Thank you, for the reply.
I think I understand your point, yet I'm not sure if I can evoke this kind of enjoyment from simply being somwhere. A very big part of my personality is highly bound to goals and achieving them through actions, so it's hard for me to simply lose myself into the moment.
>>

>You don't go because you want to take a selfie.
>You take a selfie because you are having a good time and want to brag about it.
To be fair, there are a lot of people who essentially do just go to take selfies and otherwise experience as homely a situation as possible.

But that's more a strange mutation of the modern world (without being a commie, the Wiki article on "The society of the spectacle" got me thinking a bit on this.) than the secret reason everyone travels, and even in the 70s people were talking about how for some tourists the photograph was the most important part of the journey.

I suppose those type of people are more drawn to package-holiday tourism than taking a hitch-hiking holiday in Cambodia on a whim, though.

Going to Europe from Aus on the 29th. Is Paris honestly worth it? All I hear is bad things about it. Overpriced, pickpockets, not to mention the terrorism situation at the moment. But if I skip it am I really missing out on anything more than being able to say I've been to Paris?
>>
>>1152066
What are you into? Paris has some art, some night life some history and some architecture that are unique an, if you are into that, worth experiencing. If that does not float your boat, you can skip it and go someplace else.

My usual approach to Paris is:

1: Get of plane.
2: Get on train
3: Exuent omnes, stage left.
4: ?????
5: PROFIT!

But then, I don't spend more time than I need to in big cities.
>>
>>1151124
>even in the 70s people were talking about how for some tourists the photograph was the most important part of the journey.
>I suppose those type of people are more drawn to package-holiday tourism than taking a hitch-hiking holiday in Cambodia on a whim, though.

And more power to them, if that's what makes them happy. It is absolutely no skin off my nose how somebody else travels, prays, eats or fucks.

World needs more happy people. Bon voyage, selfie-stickers.
>>
>>1151087
Not the anon you're responding to. The flags don't really add any value unless someone is specifically asking about living in another country. Most conversation on this board is focused around visiting other countries, and these kinds of topics can generally be answered by anyone who has gone to those places regardless of whether they currently reside there or not.

>>1151101
I suppose it just depends on your focus and interests. I really like art, for example. It's one thing to look at a picture of the artwork, and another thing entirely to see it in person, to see textures that are lost in photos or view it from different angles. Why read a book when you can just read a summary? Taking your Eiffel Tower example, if you were interested in architecture, then being able to see it in person would probably be a more rewarding experience than looking at a photo of it online.

There's also the old adage, "it's all about the journey, not the destination."

I enjoy remembering trips and thinking about all the places I've been and the adventures I've had.

I always put off writing shit down and photos are the easiest way of jogging my memory and remembering those things

If I, a travel companion, or someone I met on the trip is not in the picture it has to be documenting something EXTREMELY compelling or interesting to be worth looking back at for me.

Generic pictures of some random tree or tourists sight are as special as when I google a random image off of google and don't invoke the same emotions as the pictures with people in them do.

Anyone here been to or are from Perth Australia? I'm an aircraft mechanic in the US looking for a change of scenery and the Australian outback and Perth just look awesome and perfect for me. >>
>>1152524
I'm from Melbourne and I haven't been to Perth before so take from this what you will mate. But everyone I have spoken to that has been there or lived there has loved the place. Australia in general is a friendly place if you stay away from the feral areas which I think it's safe to assume you would. From what I know in the summer the temp can go into the 40s(100+Fahrenheit) but it is a dry heat, not humid like we get up north. The heat and the beaches seem to be a real selling point so hopefully you're into that. There are 2 AFL teams there which would mean a weekly sporting event in the winter if you're interested in getting into AFL(Footy is a common interest between most of the people here and it makes it easy to start a conversation). It definitely isn't overcrowded from what i hear. For a capital city it is probably the ideal size, similar to Adelaide if you adjust the size and population. In general people from Australia are pretty friendly, although I can't speak for Perth, I doubt it would be any different. You shouldn't have any trouble meeting people. Like I said I haven't even been there so not sure how helpful any of that will be, but hopefully you get over here and love it.

thank you so much for replying to me. Two quick questions for you if you don't mind. As someone who is very interested in seeing aboriginal caves and such, how hard is it to see these kind of things out there? I also own a few firearms and Ive only heard that owning a firearm in AUS is very difficult is that true?
>>
>>1152521
A Eurail pass? You're probably better off getting single tickets if you're looking to save money, especially if you don't mind taking a bus.

However, trains are extremely convenient.
>>
>>1152530
If you do end up moving it is probably best to ask the local aboriginal council about any caves. They'll be able to tell you the best way to go about it. Aboriginals have such a unique culture and it's unfortunate that it wasn't nurtured the way it should of been, anyway, the Aboriginals had their own clans/tribes. Now I'm not sure, but I think being able to see the caves would fall onto the individual tribe whether they allow it or not. That's something I don't know. But they are very spiritual people and it is best to learn from the council. I know there are certain parts where men aren't allowed to go and vise versa with woman. It's not against any law but they are sacred sites to these people and it is offensive.

I've never owned a firearm but growing up in a rural town I know plenty of people that did. The process is definietly harder than the US but it is possible. I'm not sure if it would be more difficult since you're not an Australian citizen, however my uncle owns quite a few and goes hunting regularly and has never had trouble with it. Over here it really isn't a object for protection. Most people get shotguns/rifles for hunting or to protect their farms from wild animals
>>
>>1152535
Amazing thank you so much again. I agree with you on Aboriginals having such a unique culture. I love history and want to learn more about their way of life and such. Anyways, thank you.

Hi everyone.

My buddy was just arrested at the airport while he was landing for his honeymoon in Mexico.

The problem is that it was because someone put ammo in his suitcase/he forgot it was in there, not sure which.

How fucked is he?
>>
>>1152540
No worries man, it's honestly really great to hear that. It really is tragic what happened and it's sad how much of their history was wiped away instead of being embraced. I wish more Australians wanted to get educated in the area. But yeah if you end up moving here definitely make a thread i'd be interested on what you think.

I bring it as a carry-on because I like to fiddle with the settings on the plane. I'm sure it will be fine as checked luggage so long as you pack it securely. During the day I just put it in my daybag or keep it around my neck depending on how accessible the camera needs to be. I don't use a camera bag when I travel but I do bring lens pouch because lenses are pretty pricey. Should also mention I only bring a nifty 50 and a wide angle when I travel, so I'm not carrying much with regards to camera gear.

It never gets weird on its own, at least, if you are the type of person that can be happy by yourself or make friends easily.

However, beware of the crowds you'll be with at the places you stay.
Most people would not want to be stuck at a party hostel in Amsterdam or Prague in their 40s or above.

I plan on traveling through the Balkans in June of 2017, starting in Prague and ending in Istanbul. I know pretty much nothing about the cities that I plan on visiting other than many people say that they are good to visit. I plan on doing this with a eurail global pass, but I am not sure how many days of travel I should get.

A few questions that I have:

Sofia or Bucharest?

Can I get by without speaking any of the languages in the area?

Where should I go for beaches in Bulgaria?

Is it worth checking out Greece?

If you have any recommendations for things to do in the cities, or any towns along the way that I should visit, I would love to hear them.

It would be dumb to not get PR if you can. Outside of outright buying PR (which a lot of Asians are doing to invest here), students have the easiest path.

A Canadian passport is about on par with a US one at this point since Obama ended the Cuba sillyness so only stay in Canada to get citizenship if you truly love the country. It is stable but "boring", although there is some fantastic outdoors here.

It really depends on how much money you have access to, your demeanour, and your ties to your home country. If you can demonstrate that you have the will (ties) to go back home and the resources to get out, it should be no problem.

You should also have a tentative itinerary, ideally on paper. They don't need to be full-out reservations, but just evidence that you've done some research.

Paris is shit during summer. Sure, you'll have Paris Plage but I don't think it's worth the travel. I don't even think it's worth the metro ticket. It's also hot as fuck and pollution goes through the roof.
Winter is when Paris really shines. Quite literally.
It's gonna be night by 5 PM or so. Get yourself a warm coat, drop by the Christmas Market in La Défense and grab some mulled wine. Walk some stairs and admire the view to the Arc the Triomphe from there. Soak it in. "I bet I could walk there" you'll tell yourself. Don't try. Don't forget to get to Opéra to look at the Christmas display windows. Get comfy and walk around some more before going back to wherever you stay.
Definitely wait for December, November is probably gonna get a bit emotional. Don't wait for January though, the magic will be gone.

Using HostelWorld for the first time next week. I'm just wondering when i'm paying it says pay in US$, Euro or British Pound (London Hostel) I'm from Australia. >>

Sorry but one other thing. Can I pay the deposit on the app and then when I get to the hostel pay the rest. I'd be more comfortable doing this
>>
>>1154602
>>1154603
Yes, pay in the currency of whatever the destination is, so in your case pay in GBP for a hostel in London. The exchange rate your bank uses is almost always more favorable for you than the vendor's exchange rate. In your case I really wouldn't advise paying anything other than AUD or local currency because then you're getting hit 2x with the exchange rate:
>GBP to USD to AUD
versus
>GBP to AUD

>>1154604
IIRC, with hostelworld you pay a non-refundable %-based deposit and the remaining balance is paid to the hostel when you check in. When you check out on the website it should tell you what you're currently being charged so you can confirm this before actually running your card.
>>
>>1154608
Yeah that makes a lot of sense cheers mate!

That's perfect then.
So I should just change the currency settings in app to whatever country the hostel is in?
For 3 nights the total cost is £56.70.
'Deposit payable today: £6.80'
I transfer £6.80 from AUD into the card I'm paying with and then i'll pay the rest when I get there?

Ugly American who has never left CONUS here. I've decide that it is about time I traveled somewhere other than the Dakota territories. I will be going to Naples in March for about two weeks to visit my brother (NATO JFC). Given that I can only stand his kids for a few days at a time, I'll be travelling out from there as well.

The biggest question is whether I stick to mostly Western Europe (thinking France, Germany, perhaps a day in Wales), or head east to Slovenia, Hungary, Romania? I have no specific activities in mind. It will mostly be doing some photography, making horrible sketches, eating and drinking things I've never heard of.

Other small questions...
It seems that I can save something around 20% on ingress/egress by flying into Rome and taking a train to Naples. Any reason not to do this?

Any suggestions on must-see Naples area sites?

You should get pizza, Pompeii and Herculaneum, and the Pompeii museum in Naples.
But Naples is regarded by most as a shithole, so be careful while you are there.

Two weeks would let you see a lot in Italy.
At the very least, you could check out Rome and Florence (among other cities such as Siena and Venice).

You have a lot of options with other cities. There might be a lot of good deals in France due to the lack of tourists.

A lot of people also like to go to Vienna, Bratislava, and Budapest (they're all very close to one another). You could add Prague to that as well.

What site do people buy train tickets off for travelling Europe?
>>
>>1154769
>>1154831
With only two weeks, just stay in Italy, it won't be nowhere near enough to see all the best sights anyway.

Also don't even look at regular airline flights for travel, you want Ryanair, Wizzair or Easyjet. Flights are dirt cheap in Europe, and I do mean it. 50 bucks across half the continent both ways is fairly common and with luck, flexibility and booking in advance you can do it even for 20.
>>
>>1154833

>>1154833

>>
>>1154834
>>1154835
The fineprint is that they try to sell you insurance, seats, first entry and a ton of other useless crap, including peddling shitty perfumes like a gypsy on the flight itself. Also the only thing included in the ticket is a carry-on, normal luggage often costs more than the fare - and the price for going over the low weight limit is a daylight robbery. And do the online check-in or whatever they call it, it's literally just printing out the boarding pass yourself and it saves you a lot of money.
Just read carefully what they tell you when you're booking the ticket instead of just pressing next like an ADD retard and there'll be no surprises.

Check United website for dimensions acceptable. (To me, it looks acceptable in size, but is it a good carryon? If you have some papers to carry with your laptop or something. It looks more like a commuter bag, which is the bread and butter of that company, not luggage. Their stuff is durable, however. But, my carryon is Travelpro and holds more actual travel items from it's maximum utilized underseat dimensions, like shoes, outside pocket for travel docs, side pocket for water bottle, multiple compartments inside for organization, great strap for comfort and feet to keep the bottom clean, sling in back for sliding on my 4 wheeled bag's handle when I'm off the flight, etc).

>But why? just to post a fucking selfie on Facebook?
That isn't why people travel. That's your projection. It comes from a place of your own naivety, lack of experience, and like you said no interest in other cultures or countries. I'd suggest you also don't give a shit about history, architecture, or anything else. Maybe it's depression. You don't at all sound privileged like you describe, just low class. You probably have little savings/little education, so when other people blow money or sacrifice in order to spend money, you can't relate. If you ever took a single humanities, music appreciation, geography, geology, world history or any arts class that wasn't some quick required slice of your life, you wouldn't get it. I bet you don't read novels for pleasure.

Fix yourself kid. Get a little attitude adjustment when you have two dimes to rub together and start to collect art for your house, a significant other, or just collect memories to reflect on.
>>
>>1151124
>To be fair, there are a lot of people who essentially do just go to take selfies and otherwise experience as homely a situation as possible.
It all sounds very reflective and philosophical, but it's still not true. It isn't just a mutation of society with the living through facebook image portrayal, because it's impossible to totally ignore all the other aspects of an adventure unless you're certifiably mentally ill, with 2 or more disorders. As many crazy people there are in the world, it's still rare, and certainly not the majority or "a lot of people" as you state.

>what's the cheapest way to travel?
If you're going between Maine and Boston you should only use buses (mostly them) or trains.
Look into using Megabus or another bus company that operates up there.

You can take an Amtrak train between Boston/Portland, which is not very expensive, and there might be interesting places along the way. This would be much nicer than a bus.
I haven't taken that train, but it goes to Freeport (north past Portland) which is a cool little city. It's most famous for having the flagship LL Bean store.

Portland is a small city but you should go there for a day or two. You can do fun stuff on the water (sailing, kayaking, etc.), see a lighthouse, go into mom & pop stores...I think it's a very good city to simply walk around and explore.
Many people would choose to rent a bike and ride around as well.

I don't know anything about bars and restaurants, but it's many people do go to Portland for both.
>>1156426
I don't think there are any shooting ranges actually within Boston. It might have Boston in its name, but it's actually somewhere else.

I see Groupons for shooting ranges all the time -- you might to try something like this: https://www.groupon.com/deals/mass-firearms-school-7

Make sure you can definitely do it as a foreigner. Although, in all honesty, I wouldn't even bother doing it around here. It would be a pain in the ass to go to any place with a gun range.

It's more of the type of thing a person would do while traveling to Las Vegas...our gun laws are very strict and we don't have a gun culture here in Massachusetts.

Backpacking tripped for the weekend got cancelled and I've decided it's a great time to visit Vancouver instead.

Do you guys have any advice for things to do/see in Vancouver or Canada in general?

I'm TESOL certified with a bachelor's degree and one year experience. I have lost all interest in teaching in the third world so Southeast Asia and South America are gone from my list of places I'd like to teach. My question to you guys is where can I teach with my credentials and what site should I use. Eslcafe and seriousteachers have both been disappointing.

I am an American so I'm not sure if it would be easy to find a position in Europe. If I had to pick an ideal, it would be St. Petersburg, but Google has yielded nothing of any use when I looked up jobs there.

Also would like to hear of experiences from those who have taught outside of the conventional countries you tend to see mentioned here.

I was offered a position in Radom with free housing but pay that amounts to about 500 USD. Can anyone convince me that this isn't pitiful?

The reason why I find Punjab particularly intriguing is because I know a lot of Punjabis myself, and they don't have any bad things to say about Punjab; many of them have encouraged me to go see it for myself. I also know for a fact that most of them know how to properly use a bathroom.

I'm just wondering if Punjab really is a decent place, or if this is just anecdotal bias from the few Punjabis that I do know.

if you travel a bit you'll encounter those sort of situations where people from a city/state/country would tell you bad things about other city/state/country and not to visit it, always take that with less than a grain of salt as their views are always heavily biased, they probably told you or implied not to visit south india because they're dirty but don't let that stop you go and see for yourself and you'll probably find a different truth, basically if you listen to everyone at this rate you won't go anywhere.

I'm considering flying over to Los Angeles from New Zealand, how good is it as a starting point for like a month of travel?

I like the idea of Mexico as a cheap place to travel around but is it actually cheap or are all the 'safe' places full of jacked up prices and tourist traps? I enjoyed going to a Chile and Peru a few years back, but Bolivia not so much, so the main reasons that draw me to Mexico is to revive my half assed attempt at learning spanish and to chill in a cheap country to live in.

Also as a side-note I like the idea of a road trip but since I'll be 20/21 when I travel it's pretty much a no go because no one likes renting cars out to young people. Are buses a good substitute, and are they good for meeting other travellers as a solo traveller?

Hopefully this isn't too much question spam

As someone who has lived all their life in LA I always feel bad for tourists that come here. Dont get me wrong, there is stuff to do, but certainly not enough to warrant a flight. I get the feeling most tourists leave disappointed. Hollywood is a crowded, homeless filled, smelly mess full of souvenir shops and the beaches arent much different from any others. Disneyland is overcrowded to the point where you cant enjoy yourself, same with universal studios.
>>
>>1159707
So you just leave your stuff unlocked and unattended?

>A lock on a bag is not going to deter a thief

Not sure I agree with that. It's only common sense that a bag just sitting alone on your bunk is more likely to get broken into than a locked one or one locked in a locker.

>>
>>1159725
Generally the closer you get to your desired departure date, the more expensive tickets will be. If you're buying tickets a few days to a month before your trip, it's gonna be more expensive than usual. I'm an admin so I book a lot of flights; sometimes last minute bookings end up costing double the average ticket price because cheaper fares were already snatched up by others.

When I feel the travel itch, I start watching ticket prices for the destination(s) I want to visit. Airlines have sales pretty regularly so you can generally get tickets for below-average price if you're patient and keep checking for price drops. I think somewhere between 3-6 months before your trip is the sweet spot.

Also, general rule of thumb is that if you can't afford to buy the commodity again at full price, then get insurance for it.

>>1159829
Eh, anon is correct and incorrect. The saying is, "Locks only keep out the curious." A determined thief will get into your bag no matter what you do, but a lock will generally prevent "curious" people with wandering fingers from getting into your shit.

How do you guys make your travel plans? It sounds stupid, but I always keep trying to come up with vacation plans for all these amazing places, but I never come up with anything really worthwhile. Do you just pick a few places in a certain country, and sort of YOLO your way there? Depends on what kind of traveller you are. I'm usually a solo traveller and very much on the "play things by ear" end of the spectrum, so all I have to do is figure out the logistics and a rough budget. How do I get there, where will I sleep, how do I get around, how long will I stay, how do I get back, and how much can I / should I spend. Logical stuff. Once I'm there, then I figure out what exactly I want to do. I'm mostly into exploring new areas, walking, biking, seeing sights, going to parks (urban parks or state parks), and eating out. All of which is pretty easy to do on the fly.

I did have trouble on my last trip (Vancouver) because I was counting on renting a bicycle and almost none of the places accepted debit cards. Finally found one that did, but I had to walk a long way and pay a $150 cash deposit. Would have been better to have figured that out ahead of time. But there's always a flip side: ended up doing a lot of nice walking to find the shop that I might not have done otherwise.

You wanna find the right (for you) balance between structure and freedom. I'm pretty far on the freedom side but as I travel more I'm starting to experiment with more structure.

I'm in the early stages of thinking about quitting my blue collar job and moving across the US. Reasons being: a change of scenery, an improvement in environment, and a challenge. I have about 10k saved and am a flexible, adaptable single person that's willing to live frugally during the transition. I have a few relatives in the new place, and back home have supportive parents as a safety net.

Anyone do something similar to this? How much did you line up (housing, work, etc.) ahead of time vs once you got there? What kind of challenges did you have? Did you doubt yourself and get depressed during the process? What are things like now?

Thought the most straightforward approach would be to line up housing ahead of time, drive my belongs out there, move in, find a temporary job during the winter (I have some restaurant experience but am open to many other types of work), all the while searching for a better job in my own industry.

I'm going on a 10 day trip and I may need to take medication three times per day during this trip. The flight will take 12 hours, so I will need to take one of these pills on board.

How easy is it to get medication through airport security and customs? I've contemplated just hiding a single pill on myself to avoid the trouble, but then it'll be in my suitcase as well.
>>
>>1160863
If it is prescription medication, and it is legal in the countries your are travelling through, it should be OK if you have it in the original packaging from the pharmacist. I would advise against carrying loose pills -- they might be mistaken for contraband.
>>
>>1160754
I'm sort of doing this now with some changes - quitting my white collar job (Friday is my last day), decided to go travel since I am no longer restricted in terms of vacation duration. I have 3 months abroad planned right now. Depending on how I feel after 2 months, I will either return home and job search or stay abroad and travel and/or find work to do. Basically, once the money runs out, I'm coming home.

Regarding regret, I think it depends on your current situation and why, exactly, you want to pick up and leave. As they say, you can't run away from your problems - they will eventually catch up to you. Also, personally I wouldn't move somewhere with the intent to actually live there unless I had a job lined up already. Being OK with working a crappy job is one thing, but when it comes to making ends meet, you need to at least break even on your paycheck otherwise your savings is gonna dry up eventually.

>How easy is it to get medication through airport security and customs?

Security -- no problems, as long as it is not a lot of liquid.

Customs -- Boarding, no problem. Disembarking, probably no porblem, but laws vary.

I have been to places like Dubai and Kuwait where there are some restrictions on some drugs, and none of the drugs I take are restricted, but I do travel with perscription pills, and have never been searched or checked. Not looking like a druggie or smuggler probably helps with that.

What's the Smithsonian Udzar-Hazy museum at Dulles Airport like? Worth a look?

>>

>What's the Smithsonian Udzar-Hazy museum at Dulles Airport like? Worth a look?
It's worth a look if you really like aviation. It's got a live working control tower to play in, the enola gay, spirit of st louis, and a lot of experimental aircrafts and other firsts, such as with computers that supported the space program. It's still only something like 5% of the air and space collection, but they finally have huge warehouse space to put it on display thanks to the big donors. It is also totally worth having a rental car in northern virginia such as for driving Skyline drive, shopping at tyson's, viewing the sights at night, going to the cathedral, going south a bit to some of the estates, but you can take the metro to Reston, and a bus to get the museum instead if it's something you don't wish to do. It's indeed very easy to use Reagan for your trip and not have a rental. Zip car?

I lived in DC, never once wanted to go to the Masonic temple but drove past it all the time, so sorry on that one, dunno, but I believe it's really just a meeting place for their private members, but can be rented out for events like political receptions/wedding/mason get togethers. It's kind of creepy really, people who pledge oaths to things that aren't God. It's churchlike, but isn't a church!

Siem Riep is pretty easy. You'll be able to live like a king on $300.

Haggle with a tuk-tuk for a trip to angkor wat and make sure you see the whole damn thing (consult the map). It shouldn't cost you more than $15 for a whole day around the temples and back to the hotel. Don't be an idiot and get ripped off: make sure you, in no uncertain terms, you agree on a price before you go anywhere.

Check out bar street. Bar street itself is not that great, but there are some nice places in some of the darker corners. That being said: avoid dark corners. Eat the fried ice cream and pop a bunch of $10 vicodin. Eat the happy pizza (if you can't decide on one, google it and go with the one that has the best reviews) and check out the reggae bar.

I personally went to one of the small floating villages that surround Siem Riep. I went in the dry season though, so it wasn't so much floating as muddy. Still interesting and still nice to walk around in. Everyone will wave at you and some will try to talk to you if they know a little English (don't let kids hug you though).

If you end up staying at the Funky Flashpacker (awful name, not a bad hostel though admittedly full of plebs) make sure you eat the that little family restaurant next door instead of paying for their overpriced western shit. My nigga who works there makes the biggest plate of egg fried rice you can get for a $1.50, plus it feels good to help out small businesses in poor countries.

Enjoy Siem Riep, and keep in mind that it's a party town. If you're not there for Angkor wat, the floating villages and other such cultural pursuit then you're probably there for the drugs. Both are worthwhile ways to spend your time there, but I advise you not to mix the two.

International flights to places like Mexico are going to generally be more expensive closer to christmas/new years right?
>>
>>1165218
Yes, as are intranational flights. There are also way more planes in the air on specific dates around Christmas/New Years, which means bottlenecks at airports and ATC areas where there is limited capacity to deal with extra flights. Add into that what happens if a storm or something closes down an airport and disrupts everything through the system, and it can be a stressful time to fly, expect delays and have some fat in your schedule.

they are MEANT to offer a discount but can tell from experience some places will lie to groupon and you and artificially inflate the prices to offer you the same/even worse prices than just walking in the front door.

Use it as a research tool and if the prices seem reasonable go with it.

Go to some national parks and try camping in some of them.

You mean a sailboat? Yeah nothing short of AMAZING, but you really need to go with friends, friends who know how to sail that is. Otherwise it's a bit boring, ineffective and can be dangerous at times.

Fingol here.
Im going to australia to work welding some stuff.
My question is if anyone has moved from a right-side driven country to a left one, how hard is it to rewire your brain to that?

Belgian working in the UK here. It's a'ight. It'll take a month or so to check the correct side of the street when crossing, but after that you should be OK.

If you plan on driving, try to make some friends who are cool with letting you drive their cars around quiet neighbourhoods. I've been in the UK for half a year now and precedence rules are still tricky sometimes.

Sure, you only need underpants and a couple of changes of clothing. You'll never need a sweater, and shit like flip flops and trunks you can buy there.

Canuck here, im having some problems. Im pretty much a shut in neet but I want to try traveling. The problem is when I apply for a passport I need 2 references that have known me for 2 years and arent family. I literally have no friends and have hardly left my house in years, is there anything I can do. Why is the system so stacked against introverts its not fair.

See pic related, it's straight off the Canadian Passport website. This is a list of people you CAN'T use as references.

If you read it very carefully, you CAN use your cousins, uncles, and aunts as references, provided that you don't live with them.

Going to Dublin in November, thinking of visiting Wicklow but I'm not sure if I should pay for a private tour. I'm on a tight budget and would like to save as much as possible, not to mention I'm going alone and like doing things at my own pace. Can I somehow get there alone and explore or is that not advisable for a solo tourist?

You can be an introvert and still grow out of this stupid shit.

yes

If you're asking because you want to buy your ticket now but your current passport is expired, airlines usually let you leave the passport number entry empty as long as you update it a couple of days before the flight. If you can't do that online just call them and they'll sort it for you

DESU it's rarely tainted food that causes the more common "travel illnesses" ie the shitting/vomiting ones, most of the time it's due to exposure to bacteria your body is unfamiliar with, and that can be from food, water, or just touching / coming into contact with things ie money.

The best way to avoid falling ill, particularly in south/east Asia is to take probiotics (higher amount of "good" bacteria the better), and use hand sanitiser frequently, especially if you smoke.

you need motherfucking references to obtain a passport in canda? what? why? what the fuck? you can't just show your ID?
>>
>>1168395

No its pretty bullshit you need 2 rerferences that have known you for 2 years plus a "guarantor"

The guarantor must

>Hold a 5-year or 10-year Canadian passport that is valid or has been expired for no more than one year, on the day you submit your application.

Shit is stupid
>>

Shiiieet that's awesome. General reviews for affordable TST hotels complain about cleanliness but I think I'm willing to try my luck for that. Thanks!

>>
>>1168595

They added these new rules within the last few years, they wanted it to be harder to fake an application because I guess I lot of people want canadian passports. They are similiar to american passports and you are able to get into a lot of countries without applying for visas and shit. Anyway its fucking bullshit, they call your references and ask them a bunch of questions about you.

>The good news is that the airline will put you on another to get to your destination if that happens.

If they are the same airline, definitely. If they are in the same alliance, pretty definitely.

Otherwise, you may get fucked.

If you have an option, I'd give your self more time for that layover.

Remember, doors on the plane you are trying to catch in Frankfurt close some time BEFORE the departure time.

And I fucking hate trying to get around in Frankfurt airport. It is poorly signed, there are often long lines to clear customs and then clear security again even when transferring, it suffers from a sprawling design... if it was me, I'd spend a few extra pesos if there is a flight that avoids Frankfurt altogether.
>>
>>1149068
>When asking about what to do at a destination, mention what do you want to do or what are you traveling for, where are you from, what sort of budget are you looking at?

Modestly suggest this line be included in future QTDTOT OPs. Would save some time.

Dunno about the money, but if you can, get over to Angkor Thom as well (It's the one with the iconic Big Fucking Stone Faces) and Ta Prohm (the one with the jungle still growing out of it, seen in Tomb Raider, very atmospheric, famous "dinosaur" carving.)

As somebody else mentioned, you are going to wish you spent another day or two, if you are interested in seeing all that there is to see there.

The night market is always fun.

Also, see how many times the same band of musicians missing buts from land mines manages to get ahead of you...

I think maybe you need to relax and perhaps grow up a bit. Maybe travel will help you there.

Protip: People have babies. Happens all over the world. Two of the four things babies do is make noise and shit. One of the other things they do is eat, so maybe you'll get some boobage as a small recompense for your trouble.

>How do you guys pay for trv? Do you simply save up for it and then plan a trip?

Yeah, though I also got a small windfall inheritance, and am using that to pay for some travels with my family.

>Do you have a job that nets you discounts?

My job puts me in planes enough that I get some useful miles. Got 3-4 of us to Italy two years ago, had to pay for the 4th.

> I always find myself saving for the sake of saving and can never set aside money for travel.

Some people prefer to save up money for their old age. Some people prefer to save up memories.

If you want to do both, learn to discipline yourself a bit. It is not hard, you just have to make the decision to do it.

HEY GUYS IT'S THE FLAG THING AGAIN!!!!

It has come up lots of times, and the consensus has always been that we don't want the signposting that comes with flags, which in turn add nothing to the discussion on the board. I can happen to be in Spain but know nothing about it really, I can be a guy who spent 12 years in SEA but be posting from the UK, and I can use proxies to spoof the flag I am using anyway. Flags do nothing for us, and just shit up boards that have them.
Flags: Again (and again) No.

It has been discussed here numerous tomes. The reasons for "No" are explained, again, elsewhere in this thread. Reasons for "Yes" seemed to be pretty non-existent.

If you don;t know the answer to that, maybe you are not a traveler. Which is fine, many people are not.

Good luck with the rest of your life, though. To each his own.

Problem is, in a lot of international ports, such as border crossings and airports, you're not always entitled to the same rights as a civilian.

So you could scream for a lawyer all you want, and they don't have to let you speak with one.

travelling from cold to warm climate: what do I do with my warm clothes that I will only need when I return?

Sort of bumping this >>1150203

I haven't done much traveling, but when I did my first solo trip, it was with almost 4 - 5 months worth of savings off my minimum wage (full-time, $7.25 an hour) job as a cashier. I have yet to get a college degree and at the very least I want a bachelor's. So... I have a bunch of questions for those who are more experienced;

>At what age did you start traveling? Do you have a college degree?

>Generally how much time do you take between trips? What do you do? Do you go back to work and saving money for your next trip? Is it not something you put much thought into?

and as the other anon said,
>How do you afford it? How many trips can you make in a year?

Admittedly, I need to set some priorities for myself when it comes to work, school and traveling, but I'm pretty fucking lost. I just wanna travel a lot and not waste my time in life working a shitty job just to pay rent and food, but traveling isn't cheap and it is very time-consuming...

Pls help.
