Hitching on a boat is harder than it used to be, since there was a rash of East-coast boaters that gave lifts to what turned out to be cocaine smugglers a decade or two back, leading to people Never Being Seen Again and boats being found shot full of holes in some mangrove swamp a year later, and the attitude among the boat set sort of changed, but it is still doable.
