I'm currently working on giving enough of a fuck to pick up a pencil.

Drawing digitally has motivated me to go back to pen and paper due to how much less time it takes for me to draw. Just draw whatever comes to mind for some warm-up sketches.

So I recently took up drawing, and decided with something pretty basic.

This right here is a scene from one of the greatest movies of all time, "Gamera 3: The Revenge of Irys".

I personally think my line work captured the overall personality and scale of both Kaiju in a decent manner, but I feel like its missing something

Fellow drawfriend here. What sites do you guys hit up the most in terms of furry art (aside from FA)? I'm considering having a place I just dump all my sketch requests and other unrelated work. Got quite a few furry pin-ups and some fat-art as well.

Inkbunny. Love the fact that you can submit more than one sketch under the same submission, so you don't spam the gallery. Better site than FA overall in terms of technical stuff.

Start with basic 1point perspective, then move your way up to 2point, 3point, and so on if you wanna get complicated, although all you really need to know are 1, 2, and 3. Keep your lizardmen boxes and rectangles for now. Pic I posted is I believe is from "How to Draw" by Loomis, but Sycra on YouTube has good perspective tutorials.

Assuming you're actually looking for advice and not shitposting:

Remove sidemouth,
Maybe use a stabilizer to make your lines more smooth,
Basic anatomy isn't too bad but it's a little janky,
Overall not bad if you're new.

anyone else here painfully slow at drawing something? it takes me hours to draw something that looks like a quick sketch, and in the end the pose isn't even that interesting anyway.
my brain just seems to fucking struggle on the simplest shit at times
I have pretty bad ADD and depression so maybe that's the biggest issue. Still, I wish I wasn't so painfully slow.

I'm even too afraid to post my sketches anywhere, I usually hate the fuck out of them even if other people think they're not that bad, but I guess that's just typical depressed artist mindset.
>>
>>9893988
You get faster as you get more experience. I used to need 2-3 hours just to get the basic sketch down, but now it's more like 15 mins after a few years.
Making the finished product never really got much faster... still clocking at ~10 hours, but at least the quality has gotten better.
>>
>>9894039
Problem is I've been drawing for years, not serious though (until recently) but sketching every second day at least.

But the absolute worst thing is that some days I'm crazy productive and shit drawings out like nothing, but most days I'm just painfully slow.
Just wish it were more consistent.

I know exactly what you mean. I've been trying to remedy that lately by drawing things quicker instead of actually trying to make them look good.
Overall the quality of my drawings has dropped, but I feel I've got much better at stroking lines the way I want.
It'll still take me like 30-45 minutes to doodle something that doesnt look scribbly and gross, but I feel like it's a better quality/time ratio and I've noticed myself improving overall because I spend more time trying new techniques than trying to work well with one style.

pic related, 15 minute doodle just to prove to myself I can. It's kinda crappy and minimal, but a year ago it would have taken me over an hour to produce something similar, not to mention spending more time needlessly cleaning up lines when I could be improving more important things like shading or anatomy.

No, but few of the artfriends I have have the same problem, just like me a friend of mine has been working on a pic I commissioned off him for 2 years because he wants it to look "great". I'm half in the same boat, mostly because I'm trying to get out of it. Maybe I'm too far gone, but I guess I'll find out how well it works. I do love drawing when I actually do draw, but it's so much easier to say "fuck it" and play a few quick games, shitpost on 4chan, browse the internet, rinse and repeat.

'Perfectionist' is a pet peeve term of mine -- I used to use it a lot, too. It's a way of making a flaw sound more like a virtue.

If you're a 'perfectionist' it just means that you lack the knowledge / experience to finish what you're working on and you're languishing about it rather than trying to move forward.

Not trying to bust anyone's chops, but I felt like recognizing it as a problem that could be addressed helped me more than talking about it like it's some unchangeable aspect of my personality.
>>
>>9894881

Probably. I have a couple books I need to study from that I constantly put on the backburner, because my shit health makes wanting to actually put the time in to getting better a massive fucking chore. It's frustrating when you really want to draw, and want to get better at drawing, but when you finally sit down to do it you're completely drained, so you end up doodling and sketching.

>>
>>9895249

> I haven't actually ever studied muscles before

kek'd; I'm an anatomy student.

But yeah there's a big difference between knowing the names and structure and functions of bones and muscles, and being able to actually draw them, in perspective, underneath skin. Which is why "nearly out of band-aids" isn't super accurate and it's why my character's body is asymmetrical.
>>

i can tell you're lying through your teeth because every art college/university in north america and europe call it by it's actual name:
life drawing

it's life drawing.

and if you were an actual student you would know very well that the final exam involves drawing the skeleton and muscle of the human body, life-size, on a chalk or white board that starts from the floor and up the wall.

also you need to do some gestures and more studies because goddamn

>>9894896
massive head in comparison to those shoulders and the size of that torso. the torso is 3-4 heads tall typically (depending on the age and gender) while yours there is two. shoulders (for females) are often 2 to 2 and a half heads wide.

even for foreshortening those arms are too fucking short, so are the upper thighs because where the shirt bulges out near the bottom is her ass which means her ass is halfway up her spine.

so how about instead of practicing your ability to lie you go practice your art instead?

No, I meant anatomy. I'm two years into neuroscience. I'm not an arts student, I'm a science student and I enjoy painting in my spare time. The point I was making was; I know the muscles scientifically. I know about the fibres that make up the rectus abdominis, the iliac crest, the serratus anterior and so on. I'm supposed to know the muscles medically.

But knowing the muscles medically doesn't translate into artistic skill. While I HAVE studied the muscles before, I haven't done so in an artistic way which is why I'm shit at drawing abs.

I think the lineless background clashes with the cartoony Rita. Either have them both lineless, or both cartoony.

Also, protip: realistic lighting works well with thin/no outlines. On the other hand, flat areas of color work well with thick outlines.

Yes I'm mad. I'm mad because you're clearly making excuses.

And excuses are what stops art. Excuses are what you use to avoid doing something that isn't going to be pleasant, like practice. Excuses are when you can't face the goddamn truth.

You want to be good at anatomy? You want to be good at art?

Stop giving me excuses and go out there and draw. I don't care about your life story, I don't care if you're a fucking rocket surgeon because this thread is about art.

Art.

Overall decent. It's a cartoon so I can't wig out so hard about anatomy but you do really need to work on your shading when it comes to your lineless stuff.

Contrast is key for that, overblending and oversoftening the edges of the shadows will just make it look muddy and blurry.

This is the part everyone forgets.

We all have an ideal image of what something looks like in our heads, but that's the issue. We only -assume- we know what it looks like.
Only by admitting that what we see in our heads is wrong can we stop symbol drawing and actually learn how to draw.

Symbol drawing is the issue 99% of the time.

Also nice roasting anon.

IDK why you're so mad anon. You critiqued my painting, and that was fair. You're right, I haven't actually ever studied muscles before (for artistic purposes). I don't think I ever claimed to have.

All I did was say that I found that amusing because I have studied muscles before. I said, "I'm an anatomy student". ANAT241 is the name of the paper I'm taking right now. I'm not an art student and because I'm not an art student, I didn't realize that saying "I'm an anatomy student" would trigger you so hard and make you think I'm a liar. I'm not; I'm just referring to my subject by the name I know it as.

You then give me some more critique on my second painting, saying that the head's too large, the arms are too short and that I should go practice art instead. I'd love to but I have two fucking exams this week so that I can get a useful degree in neurosci instead of an arts degree. I'll let you know once I get a spare moment to actually work on my hobby.

And then, you make this comment, in which you explode because you think I'm making excuses or some shit. I'm not making excuses, unless "it's my hobby" is an excuse to you. You also say that you don't care about my life story or what I do because this thread is about art, which seems to suggest you'd critique anyone in this thread for having a life outside art because to you, that's an excuse and they should "go out there and draw" and that "no prior goddamn experience in any other field is going to protect you from yourself without it being detrimental."

I'd say I'm sorry for sharing a piece of my hobby with you, but I'm really not. You seem like the kind of person who'd get mad over anything just to win an internet argument.

>>
>>9896004

The first year of medicinal study at the university I go to teaches you general anatomy. Things like;

> The biceps brachii has two heads. The short head attaches to the coracoid process on the inferior side of the scapula, and the long head attaches to the superior side of the scapula. The biceps brachii attaches distally to the radial tuberosity.

I've chosen to specialize into neuroscience; so a lot of that knowledge is now useless to me.

What they don't teach us is how to draw this shit.

In my field, Anatomy is one part of being a Medical student. So I'm not running damage control at all.

stop trying.
>>9896156
the term is chicken scratches and if you're going to try and help them stop it you should first explain what happens:

when you draw you use three movements. your wrist, your elbow and your shoulder.

the wrist is what you use for writing and it's what people assume you're supposed to use for drawing but that's incorrect. the wrist has very little circular movement (it's more like 2/3rds of an oval) and is very twitchy. this means it's really only good at fine details.

the elbow has a better range (2/3rds still but not as twitchy or oval-ish) and is a bit more steady. this is what most people (should) use when cleaning up a sketch and doing linework.

the shoulder gives the greatest range of motion smoothness. it can be difficult however to use one's entire shoulder for a motion that's small so people tend to only use it for the initial rough sketch (gestures, working out poses quickly) or really straight lines or very nicely drawn circles.

so in that order a sketch in theory should go:

shoulder (roughly work out details lightly and smoothly)
elbow to put down some confident lines
wrist for details like facial features.

Maybe on my tumblr. I have not posted that on my FA yet. I also do stuff for Endtown and drawthreads sometimes

>>9894885

No no, I understand it's a mindset I have that is poisonous. It's not by means a virtue, it's a shortcoming of mine cause I'm overtly critical of my own work. My friend keeps telling me that the details I want to rework are miniscule and no one will notice or that the pose looks fine and it's just my imagination that tells me it's off.

Lately I've been starting to work on taking this critical approach to my stuff a little less seriously, but not without enough self-awarness to actually get better.

A lot of perfectionism stems from low self-esteem I believe and it's a sort of a way to well put that experience that low self-esteem in a very strange manner.

Pencil artist from just earlier, here.

I never understood the importance my arm movements. Everything i do is done with the wrists. Some things might be done unintentionally with the elbow but i NEVER use my whole arm.

In fact, every drawing I made is done "twice".
I sketch it with some HARD (H3) pencils, because If i work with soft ones the lead gets everywhere. Then I erase everything lightly and redo the lines with a rather soft (B1) pencil do get darker lines.

Thruth is i might not even know hot to move OR EVEN HOLD my pencil.

What I am asking is how DO I move my arm for lines? does it mean I have to relearn drawing from scratch?

no.

take a scrap sheet of paper and draw a line from one end to the other, length-wise and horizontal.

do it once with bending your wrist, then your elbow, then your shoulder.

now draw a bunch of circles of different sizes, first your wrist, then your elbow, then your shoulder.

it took me about 48 hours tops to get used to the idea of doing longer and more confident lines using your elbow/shoulder.

man art takes a while.

art is probably one of the hardest things to do because it's so revealing. art is about taking what you don't know and showing it to the world with flashy lights and big neon arrows.

you are taking your mistakes and baring it all to the world to pick apart.

it takes real courage to do that and seeing as how you're already working on your art (quite successfully i might add) then i think you have the courage and determination to continue.
>>
>>9896588
why are you so obsessed with this guy
>>
>>9896746
the brain is a pattern recgonizing machine and anyone who says they know anything about art (like anatomy doctor) is simply putting limits on their growth.

the brain is a pattern making and organizing machine and we simply draw the patterns we can recognize. there are ways around this but it involves practice and hard work. you need to exercise your muscle memory and ignore what your brain believes is 'right'.

your brain is the true enemy when it comes to creativity. it likes being comfortable and not pushed outside of it's comfort zone. it is ready and willing to drop whatever it's doing if it just gets a little too abstract for itself.

style is simply the way you hide your mistakes.

if you've already accepted defeat then there's no reason for to convince you otherwise.
you've been given advice. whether or not you have the willpower and determination to follow it through is up to you.

just remember that the only person who can make you draw and improve is yourself because nobody else cares. i'm not being mean but that's actually how it works. artists will compare themselves to other artists and if they deem someone is 'worse' than them then they will want them to remain worse.

other artists don't want to see other artists get better. it hurts their ego. fans don't want artists to get better unless it means the artist will draw more stuff they want/like.

nobody cares about you as an artist. they only care about your work and your skill and whether or not it makes them feel better or worse.

so fuck those people.

who the fuck cares if you're awful, who the fuck cares if other people are better or worse than you. you want to draw for fun? then do it. you want to draw porn? then do it.

This was a thread about sharing art, I shared art. All I've done was simple base work that doesn't need to be perfect. I could just erase the entire thing and start over again if I so felt like it. I don't give a shit if someones art is better than mine because I know that they've had far more experience than me over the span of far more time. I want to get better, and thanks for the advice but I'll do it on my own time however way I feel is best for me. I don't need anyone else telling me how I should draw shitty sketches. Just don't fall into the "it's my style" shtick and actually practice art instead of just copying a single person's style like you're doing now.
In fact, find 5-10 artists who styles you like and copy those for a few weeks. The more the better. Don't try to force style either.

It is? Odd.
I think of my art of "just pencil drawings".
Nothing special.
>>
>>9897876
I think everyone thinks their art is just "drawings" but others pick the pieces to form what they call a "style".
>>
>>9897753

Take various round objects like coins, pill bottles, and glasses, and use them to trace perfect circles onto paper in pen. Then, take a pencil and practice tracing them so you get an idea of what the movement actually feels like. Compare that to how your mind and your muscles are instinctively telling you to do it.
>>
>>9897876
I really do suggest looking into the video, it helped me a lot.
>>9898077
Just make sure the object isn't too tall and you're not focused on wrist movement.

I came into this thread to laugh at shit art.

I'm not even an artist.
>>
>>9896974
this sounds like really good post
except for the "no artist wants you to improve part"
that sounds like a thing bitter shitters on ic do
the daily spitpainting artists on facebook were supportive when they spotted a beginner
>>
>>9899583
You're an idiot if you think people care about you as a person.

Artists are one of the most vicious, lying, back-stabbing and dramatic groups on the planet who would love nothing more than to tear down those on top and spit on those below them just to make themselves feel a little better.
>>
>>9899583
>>9899625

the only people who disagree that artists do this are the beginners who are on denial and people who go on about how much of a "nice guy" they are. the same nice guys who wonder why they can't get a gf/bf.

"I'm a really good person, I don't think like that".

Then you're not an artist.
>>
>>9899657
Secret to becoming an artist: Be a horrible person.

This explains why Hitler was so evil.
>>
>>9899714
It's not that they're intentionally being horrible.
It's that to become an artist you also have to become a critic. But you also have to compare yourself to others.

This causes artists to envy those better than them, forcing them to look at art worse than their own to feel better. Those who do not do this get overwhelmed and give up.
>>
>>9899752
Wow, I feels really bad that this kinda relates to me.
>>
>>9899784
There are exceptions to the rule but it's really just the nature of the beast.

At some point you will need to stop and think "I'm better than them". Video games, playing music, writing, sports, whatever. There comes a point where you will need to say "I am better than <x> at <y>."

You don't need to actively say this out loud but as a person you need this to have the strength to continue. But that's not all.

You need to have the ability to know that just because you're better than someone else it doesn't mean the people worse than you are bad people. It doesn't mean their accomplishments mean nothing.

As long as you are putting the time and effort into something, however small of an amount that may be, it's still better than the people who refuse to try.
>>
>>9899657
you`re retarded dude

> forcing them to look at art worse than their own to feel better.
I don't look art shittier than mine to feel motivated.
I always keep on looking at better people, because that's what motivates me.
Looking at art that you just passed in skill, is like hitting the gym for months and then comparing your running performance to some fat guy.
Do you feel better when you beat him? Fuck no, so don't look at him. Look at the roided out meathead that you one day want to beat in his field.
Then again I have a background in sports, so comparing myself to people worse than me really brings me no joy.
After all, you can't learn from people worse than you and art is supposed to be a constant learning process, until you're ready to hit the actual industry and make the big bux.
Art is incredibly competitive for sure and a good thing that it is, but there's healthy competition and then there's the other stuff, which is essentially wallowing in negativity.
And that gets you nowhere.
Look into the future and reach those goals, draw the good feeling from that.
Not from beating your peers or people who are vastly worse than you. That doesn't improve you in any way.

>>9899957

More like I don't focus on the negative stuff that gets you absolutely nowhere.
Does it improve you to go to /ic/ and angrily shitpost all day in those threads? Give it a good long thought and see what it has brought you.
You don't have to be some kind of a good samaritan to simply ignore the negative aspects that are simply sapping away at your energy and slowing your progress.
>>
>>9900040
The level of denial you have would be hilarious if it weren't so sad.

People are focused on themselves and themselves only. Positive actions toward others are meant to benefit your emotional state and to earn favors and respect.

edgelord babby's first psychoanalyst aside but if you feel so threatened by a post on 4chan, in /trash/, the grease trap of the imageboard world then that may be saying something about how fragile your ego is.
>>
>>9900029
>then prove me wrong.
the burden of proof is upon you
you made the first claim
>>
>>9899752
I can be a critic and still not be a complete asshole and backstabbing fucker while doing so. To think you can't soak a single atom of happiness out of life because you want to keep improving sounds fucking insane.

This incredibly negative outlook on life sounds like a common trait the drawfags bred around 4chan seem to exhibit in melodramatic quantities.
>>
>>9900111
how does it feel to have zero reading comprehension?
>>
>>9900111

Haha, I'm not threatened, what gave you that idea?
Like anon above me said, reading comprehension is pretty important.
What I said was, don't draw motivation from looking at people who are beneath you, look at people who are better than you and draw the energy from reaching their level.
Then look further into the future after you reached that level.
I have been drawing for a bit over 4 years and I'm working on multiple +200$ commissions at the moment.
And in few short years I'm aiming to work in the industry, which I will achieve at this rate.
So I'm speaking from experience with this sort of mindset. It works.
Other alternative is what you see at /ic/ or with your way of thinking here.
It's just bringing you down and keeping you stagnant in whatever you do.
Compete with the ones who are better than you, not with the retard of the bunch to prop up your self esteem.

Dude, there's this new thing called CONSTRUCTIVE criticism! Unlike the vile shit you usually see on 4chan, constructive criticism points out issues AND positive aspects without the use of sarcasm, cynicism and insults.

>But you also have to compare yourself to others. This causes artists to envy those better than them
Yeah, no. You might as well take the very wise advice of most big artists and illustrators and take other's successfulness in art as a goal to accomplish yourself. 'Cause they worked for it and so should you, if wanna reach that level of proficiency.

>I know drawing from life is good but I find it so monotonous and I see it helping more towards proportions rather than line work.
You get better at line work the more you draw. The thing with real life drawing is that you'll need techniques to draw things accurately from different angles. That's why many artists tell beginners to draw simple shapes, because they make it easier to adjust size and perspective of the thing you want to draw, as well as working your way up to the object by adding more and more details.
>>
>>9902143

>#3 looks different from every angle

fuck I'll never get this right
>>
>>9902380
draw more
>>
>>9902380
Look at yourself in the mirror as you turn your head. Get someone to model for you, or just find videos of people moving their heads and run them in super slow motion. Start drawing from as many different angles as you can. You'll see how the different views from different angles blend together, and understand the whole that much better for it.

Most of my hyper drawings come from me drawing an average figure, then just adding larger curves later since its not too much work after that.

(also, to sate my autism, I don't really do inflation. I do hyper curves/belly and maybe expansion. There's a difference)
