Well they'd still need to get some significant help and an explanation for why they were down there in the first place. Assuming they did get out, and they weren't suspected of anything, they would have to assume that the four told at least a few people, like Mae's parents, what happened. Offing the gang wouldn't be smart, because they would also have to get rid of potential in-the-knows lest they get pointed out directly. Four young adults disappearing is suspect enough, plus people close to them? That would scream of some kind of wrongdoing, some kind of conspiracy. I think the worst part of the ending is Bea talking about how it's "Morally grey." It is absolutely NOT morally grey. They didn't do anything except kick the guy who grabbed Mae away, which was self defence.

Plus if the mine accident hadn't happened, the cult would have gone on right on killing, starting with Mae. This is a pretty cut and dry moral dilemma, and the gang carry no guilt.

My best guess was they got this from Life is Strange, because Life is Strange had something like this at the end.
