I could understand the artist being transgender, but if, 'being transgender,' is so much more important a facet of your personality than the gender you feel more in line with that you make your character trans instead of your trans gender, then there's a problem.

On the other side of it, if you're so invested in the LGBT movement that you feel like you have to make a character that's trans - a character that is flawed on a physiological level in that their brains produce the wrong sex hormones, and who will likely never, to suit your personal beliefs and agenda, see a solution to their problem - then there's a completely different kind of problem.

Anyway, it is 100% a disorder, if it's legit and they're not all special snowflake. I believe that sexuality is a spectrum, but gender is not.
In studies of brains it's found that legit trans people have brains that are near identical to the gender they want to be, and not to the sex of their body. So a FtM has a male brain and a MtF has a female brain.

But, there's no easy answer to this, aside from opening up discussion and changing peoples' minds, and people are rigid. Personal bias isn't rampant just as part of the current generation, it's always been there; it's a basic part of how the human mind works. Anything that's different, from the way a person acts or dresses, to the way they talk, to the ideas they have, is classified as a case of, 'us versus them,' and nothing can fix that.
