I never knew anything about Bubsy before this. Then, I ran across one of these threads and I looked into the game. What little has been shown so far blew my mind. And it takes a lot to stick with me. Basically I was inspired by Conker when I first came up with Modern Bubsy. I had only played the James Turrell fangame at the time and learned about Bubsy's tainted legacy, so I figured this would be something I could run with.

I picked up the Bubsy games and studied them, and came across an implied theme: Bubsy's a struggling actor who can't catch a break. So I ran with it and came up with this video game Roger Rabbit type of world, since in Roger Rabbit, cartoons are just actors.

As for art direction, I'm a total Burtonfag, so I based the slums off of Halloween Town from Nightmare Before Christmas. But since it's supposed to be like a modern city, I also threw in some Cool World inspiration. There'll be more Cool World type stuff in the downtown area.

As for the characters, I try to do things that aren't too obvious and I try to base them loosely on things the characters actually do. Like Awesome Possum is an obnoxious hippie who's obsessed with recycling, Wild Woody's a porn artist who likes drawing huge tits, Sonic's a douche with a sense of unwarranted self-importance and coasts on his former accomplishments, Mario sues everyone, etc.

And their placement in this city depends on their legacy. cult classics like Conker live in the suburbs, infamous characters like Bubsy live in the slums, the giants of the industry like Mario live in the really ritzy parts, the absolute worst of the worst like General Custer are ghosts in the graveyard (along side characters that are just simply dead like Arnold) etc.
