For those unfamiliar, "Plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model." If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.

New Due Date 10/31

Frame Arms Group Build

This time the idea is to build any Frame Arms, or Frame Arms Girl kit, and paint and customize it.

The rules are overall pretty simple, the base must be recognizable as FA or FA Girl, other than that there's no limit on what you can do.

Due Date: October 31st

Note: This is a prize build, there will be a prize provided by me, there will also be a mystery prize provided by another anon. That means that to enter, I need WIP pictures submitted before the due date. Simply email me some pictures of you working on it, I don't care at what point, as long as it's possible to tell where your final product came from.

Prize Pack:
MSG Free Style Bazooka
MSG Impact Knuckle
MSG Beast Sword
MSG Assault Rifle #2
Miscellaneous supplies

I'm probably going to add more, but I'll let those be a secret.

Email: [email protected]

I'm also available via IRC and Steam

I wanna get a Zgok, but im not sure if i should get the MG or the RG. Which is the better kit? All ive built so far are HGs.
>>
>>6513086
Can't speak for the RG, but I like the MG a lot more than I thought I would. The building process shows it's age and I'm not crazy about polycap joints, but it still poses great with no issues. It's one of those kits where yeah a 2.0 would be nice, but it isn't exactly needed
>>
How do you thin Tamiya paint for detail painting ? I can't get the right ratio with the tamiya thinner, either too thick or too liquid/wash.
>>
>>6513127
I normally don't even thin it if it's small details. If you really want, maybe like a drop of thinner or two in about a ml of paint.
>>
>>6513127
Tamiya really isn't good for hand painting details. If you have to though, unthinned is best IMO.

>>
How is the REBORN1/100 Hamma Hamma?

Should I get that or the GM Sniper II?
>>
>>6513228
Honestly they're both good kits. The Sniper is great at posing with a solid build and decent accessories, but has a downplayed look. The Hamma has a lot of presence and can still pose fairly well, especially for an RE, the build is simpler (whether that matters to you or not) but the ankles will need to be tightened. You can't really go wrong either way, and it's hard to recommend one over the other because I love them both

What's the stability like on this model? I had purchased the red Lapieal a while back and I wasn't too happy with it. Many pieces refused to stay on the figure. The shoulder armor, pigtails and various pieces on the gauntlet and waist armor would always fall off. I got so frustrated that I ended up gluing them on, which I regret doing. It was my first purchase of the line and it really turned me off of others.
>>
Any decent place to get the mr color gundam related paints in europe?
>>
>>6513315
Most everything seems pretty stable, the only loose parts were the fingers for the right hand's grip hand, and the connector for strapping the sword on the Vulture's back. Both of which are easily fixable with Future.

Is the Tryon 3 a decent kit? It looks really interesting, but the gimmick could either be fun or horribly frustrating.
>>
>>6513523
It's a decent kit considering it uses the HGUC ZZ gundam kit that came out in 2010 as its base and that kit had really hindered articulation so this kit suffers from that too. Also the Tryon 3 has quite a lot of stickers and some of them are a pain in the ass. Other than that it looks good in mobile suit mode and in its separate beasts mode. Really the best thing going for the kit is how awesome it looks when everything is said and done.

Wish they made a MG with perfect transformation.
>>
>>6513523
don't expect much from the sword. It's constructed in a weird way where the handle is pretty floppy, there's no way to plug it into both hands, and one wrist is nowhere near strong enough to hold it up in any pose
>>
>>6513795
I hope that if the ver ka doesn't end up being a total brick that it can be used as a base for a 1/100 tryon. Didn't they do something like that for the red warrior?

So.. obviously the chances of getting a kit of this are impossible. How much would have to be scratchbuilt to make one of these? The psyco arms and legs exist. So do a few other misc parts. Is there a decent 1/144 woundwort?
>>
>>6514419

I think there's a resin kit which the 1/100 is supposedly based on?
>>
>>6514440
I actually own that already. I've just never built it. From what I've heard the cutecube woundwort is completely separate. Since in order to make the kit they'd need to make molds based on 3D models. I can't really see them directly copying the resin kit. It just wouldn't be practical right? At most they had one on hand that they used as a reference.

Side question, I've only got one resin kit, the woundwort. When i bought it stunk really badly of chemicals. Is that normal?
>>
>>6514454

>From what I've heard the cutecube woundwort is completely separate.

I'm sure what I heard was just speculation, then.

>When i bought it stunk really badly of chemicals. Is that normal?

Wish I could answer such things, then I'd buy some resin kits myself.
>>
>>6514263
The laser cut process bandai used on the face to make vents punched out can currently only make things as small as the vents on a 1/100 size face. Because of that they had to make the distance between each vent farther apart or the face would collapse. The result is a face where the vents are not only the wrong size and shape, but are also not the correct position in the face.

Starting with rg gold frame and now rg unicorn, they give you a face where you just panel line it like a hg. More accurate and less derp
>>
>>6514463
Fair point. I'm not hardcore enough to build any resin kits myself. At least not yet haha.

On the woundwort, i heard some speculation that cutecube made it with the intent to expand on the design with addons. Maybe there's hope yet. Can anyone here corroborate that claim?

All I know is I'm wasn't a big fan of 1/100s, but I liked the design enough to get one despite that.

This is one hell of a handgrenade. I have no idea where I'm going to put it when it's done, though. 1/100 kits are as large as I feared.

I guess my collection of awful video game spin-off movies gets relegated to a cardboard box in the basement.

>>
>>6514521
So i guess it needs glue? How's the transformation? Bad/incomplete is what I've heard but apparently it doesn't come with instructions to transform it so maybe it's just obtuse.

Tryon 3's split transformation is pretty damn simple. It's just the same split at the waist the zz already does for its transformation, except the backpack detaches as its own piece instead of staying with the leg section. Almost everything else is stuff that either the zz already does or would be simple to implement.

Does primer fully protect the plastic from the following layers going on? I'm a bit afraid of doing a super wet gloss on pieces that are ABS as I'm using lacquer paint.

Bandai better start reprinting most of the water slide decal, cant find 00 raiser MG water slide anywhere.....i may try samuel decal.
>>
>>6514504
How so?
>>
>>6514664
Yes. But there's the danger of the primer itself damaging the ABS plastic if the primer is lacquer or enamel. Properly applied and if you let it cure properly, the primer won't damage the ABS and protect the plastic from any subsequent layers of paint. Unless you go way heavy on the lacquer thinner and let that shit melt the primer away.
>>
>>6514676
Well the receipt was auto confirmed. Although now there's an update that says "Waiting for storage. The package is successful" but there's still no option to pay for the international shipping. I didn't use an agent or anything, just domestic and then UPS
>>
>>6514704

I'm using lacquer based primer and I always apply it in really light coats on ABS.

I use mr color and I thin it by like 2/3 thinner, not sure if that would be too much. Could always go a little thicker for the abs pieces I suppose.

I assume the risk is lower in a case where I do primer -> basecoat -> clear gloss (wet) than if I do primer -> gloss basecoat (wet)? I mean, there would be an additional layer between the wet coat and the ABS.

>GM / GM
>Pluma
>Zgok E
>Some custom parts ma de of pla-plate.

It's a shame they won't release this. Instead they continue to gave as FAG Ripoffs.
>>
>>6515071
It looks nothing like any of those except the GM/GM, it's almost all custom. Hands aren't from Dead End, the hands are literally claws built around some sort of underwater turbines and look nothing like the Dead End's except having digits. And the chest is definitely not from the Z'gok E, the Z'gok E doesn't have frontal vents like those, the eye tracks don't go back like that, and the body is way too wide, almost MG scale (but of course it's definitely anyway. Not sure were you see the plumas in their either, it's just general shield parts for the skirt.

It's name is "The End". Dead End are its attack names.

And its a gm/gm wearing a big poncho designed after zeon aquatic ms aesthetic. Considering the water was actually a trap it was probably going to ditch the poncho bit as soon as meijin jumped into the paint thinner and battle his weakened gunpla with the normal gm/gm underneath.

Question;

I just put my second Gunpla together, and I noticed that his neck and left arm have loose ball joints. How do I go about fixing this?

Also, if I use a paint marker to do the detailing on the little indented parts, will an eraser really take up all the excess paint? Should I do the detailing before I paint over it?

I'm going to file down the nubs on the other model I did and repaint it so that the paint looks smoother. It looked great for a few hours when I thought it was dry, but the next day, I could tell that I went overboard with weathering.
>>
>>6515468
Put a tiny bit of super glue on the ball and let it dry, then put it back in the joint, the dried glue will give it some more friction.
>>
>>6515468
Strange. All the IBO kits I built had decent joints. If you have loose balljoints you can coat it in a layer of acrylic varnish or put masking tape on the ball for slight tightness.
>>
>>6515476
>the dried glue will give it some more friction.
It will also make the ball uneven so the joint may not move smoothly.
Better way:
>put glue on ball
>put joint back together
>keep joint moving until glue dries

It takes me like three days' worth of free time (up to three/four hours per day) to build an HG, and another just to finish off the rest of the equipment. Maybe it's because I'm building while seasonal shows are playing in the background, or maybe it's because I'm just doing everything with an old pair of nippers, an Xacto knife, and a Gundam marker, but I just don't build quickly.

I want this to happen so much, if they manufacture them like gunpla they'll have the quality of $50+ tank kits for half the price, and Garupan is super popular so they might have success with that.
UC hard graph was too niche to manufacture and market like normal gunpla and they were kinda deliberately making them shit to pander to the scale modelling crowd who like the challenge.

We all know Bandai will just make a deal with CyberHobby or Dragon or whoever to sell their kits under GuP label like it's always been done. No one, not even Bandai is crazy enough to invest into designing brand new molds for potentially dozens of tanks that have been already done by companies with vastly more experience in the field AND for the market of basically filthy casuals.

They might do some busts and maybe some figure kits, and they'll grab some easy cash for the next couple of years while the series is still remembered.

Okay, so I have a question about snipping parts off the runners
I got myself some nippers like the guide says, and recently I also got myself an xacto knife set from a resale shop for pretty cheap
My question is multifold so I'll split it up

1. Where are you actually supposed to cut the sprue when you're removing the part? I've always cut as close as possible and then used sandpaper to get any excess, but this leaves little marks, like dents, in the plastic that I can't remove
2. I tried cutting further away and using a knife for the excess, but i just end up needing to sand anyway and it doesn't look much better than using just the nippers. Is this normal? Do I just lack experience?
3. I know that it's impossible to completely cover up nubs/stress marks unless you paint your kit, but how visible should they actually be when you're not painting? I always feel like mine are a lot more noticeable than they should be?

Pic of what my current build looks like to show you what I mean. Sorry for the retarded questions, I'm still pretty new at this

Now that I can see being nifty. I wonder if this means we'll be seeing more effects parts soon?
>>
>>6516943
On step 4, what did you do for the corners that they're sand coloured?
>>
>>6517081
scratch the marks with your thumbnail a bit after cutting them off. about 75% of the time it'll make the mark hell of a lot less noticeable. You could also color match a gundam marker to the plastic color and just lightly dab the spot a bit.

I myself use my xacto to cut as close to the part as possible with a gentle sawing motion for thicker parts, and cutting length wise along the sprue for smaller parts.

If your nub marks are lighter than the base color, it means the plastic is stretched, and you can fix it by slightly compressing the area (that's the idea with rubbing your fingernail on it).

Dark colors are tough, since the plastic goes white when it stretches, regardless of the color that's in it.

This is why you want to cut a little bit away from the part, so that any squeezing your nippers do to the plastic will not propagate into the part itself. Then you sand away the rest of the nub. Sanding doesn't particularly stress the plastic.

It's a putty that cures when exposed to light, like the package says. I think it's several minutes under full sun or something.

I use a UV spotlight I put together so it cures in 10-15 sec and then I can sand it.

You can also use one of those nail curing lights, 30-60 sec is enough to cure it.

The only drawback is that it needs to be applied in low light so it doesn't start to cure too early.

I had the same problem, you have to connect the ankle before you attach the armor, because the armor pieces fit in a way that locks it all together. Carefully take the calf and shin off (D1 11 and 12), connect the inner frame together completely, and then reassemble. It should fit right if it hasn't been stressed too much.

When I was a kid, I watched bits and pieces of whatever series were on Toonami. I also played a couple PS2 games. Most of my interest in Gundam is in all the other mechs in the show, anyway.

In my mind, I have a completely different setting for my mechs. Me and one of my buddies kind of flesh that world out by talking about it and playing a tabletop wargame called Heavy Gear Blitz

Our setting is more like Armored Core + Firefly + Mass Effect than Gundam. The Mechs are also a lot smaller, too.

I just got this kit in the mail. It's supposedly the American release of the HGUC Char's Zaku II, but the kit inside is actually a recolored version of the HG Zaku II from the 08th MS Team line. Even the boxart and photos reflect this difference. Does anybody know anything about this kit? Was there ever even a release of this mold in Char's colors in Japan? The instructions have Japanese text, but I can't find any evidence of a Japanese release on Google.

Runners and manual. Theis kit comes with all the same parts as the 08th MS Zaku, including the pieces to convert the kit into the MS-06J. The catalog it comes with gives info about a campaign that ran from April to September of 2001, which means that this kit pre-dates the Japanese HGUC Zaku by about a year.

Inside the manual. The Japanese text in the manual makes me think this kit was released in Japan at one point, but unfortunately I can't find any info about a Char-colored version of the 08th MS Zaku mold that came out there. Part of me also thinks this was a western exclusive that was commisioned by Bandai America, but then why wouldn't the text be in English? I find it hard to believe that Bandai Japan would go to the trouble making a new illustration, taking photos, and writing new flavor text just for a kit that would't even be released domestically. They even went to the trouble of making a new paint mixing chart with references to Gundam Color paints. Anybody else have any info on this kit?
>>

Seems like this release isn't exactly the same since the Gundam and Zaku set excludes the F/S parts and comes with grey pipes. Doesn't explain where the boxart and manual text came from though.

>What's interesting to note is that the bottom right part of your image was used as-is in the HGUC Zaku manual.
Which part? The line-art in the US version is taken from the Ver. 1.0 MG, and according to Dalong the text underneath it different.

>>
>>6518155
Sorry, I didn't give things that careful of a look and got confused by the lineart. My only guesses to the parts and boxart/manual is that Bandai changed the plastic colors between releases, and that the boxart/manual were early versions that were eventually changed for the official HGUC release in Japan. The paint color formulas might've been pulled from another Zaku II release, and if my guess about this being an "early version" is right then it might match up with the formulas for the HGUC Zaku II.

Thanks for posting all of this. Oddities like these are really neat to look into.

I have what might be a dumb question. I'm trying to handpaint, and I'm not sure what order the steps are in. The guide says:

Sand-> Prime -> Lacquer -> Gloss Coat -> Enamel or acrylic -> Details* -> Top coat
I'm using acrylic paint, so I can skip the lacquer, right? Does that mean I put a gloss coat on the primer and then paint the gloss coat? What's the point of that?

I forgot to check the guide while I was painting, so I went
Prime -> Acrylic -> Gloss floor cleaner -> Matte spray

It looks okay, but I'm not sure if the problems are because I did the wrong order or if it's because it's my first time painting.

Here's the back of the manual. Turns out the paint ratios for this kit are completely different from the normal HGUC. The closest match to it that I could find was the First Grade. The colors used and their proportions are different between the FG and the American Zaku, but the cited Gundam Color paint names are the same.

>Both are acrylic

not all acrylics are the same at all. Tamiya acrylic for instance is actually an acrylic hybrid with a lot more solvent content than other brands. Look up the MSDS online for the paint to get the specs on the ingredients.

That being said, model master & vallejo should mix o.k both being a lot closer to regular acrylics than tamiya or mr hobby. Try it out on some test pieces to be sure before using on a kit.

Amazon gets their stock from Bluefin, which gets in new releases about a month or two after they come out in Japan. If you're impatient, there are third-party sellers on Amazon from Japan that already have it in stock, but at that point you could just get the kit from another site if it's cheaper.

Just showing what the XN Raiser is, since "Never seen the XN raiser before"

>plus a imagen of HG XN raiser
Because I wanted to show this cool thing that it could do. Didn't think people would be this confused by this.

About half the size of a MD.
>>
>>6518882
This is the reason I bought both. Governor for running powerarmors and such, and para pawn for MD headswap.
>>
>>6518285
Ah okay.
I always lamented the peghook boxes they gave the G and SD kits.
Also you have FullArmor Captain and I'm jealous.

>>6518430
You got a Standard ruler? You got the brand name of the airbrush?
Measure the circumference at the threads of the outlet on the compressor, and look for that connector-nut-sized air hose from that airbrush company.

>>6518608
Either of the two on the right, they're actual model kits.
>>6518744
'cuz it's new, and blueballed only in Japan (retail release everywhere BUT Japan)
>>
>>6518882
huh, parapawn looks pretty cool, I ordered one on a whim since it was cheap and I could use a non-gundam/cute girl model kit once in a while

Now that Bandai has the new Ver. ka Gundam ZZ, do you think they'd ever use it to make a MG Tryon 3? Or would that be too fun?

All done. First MG wasn't as bad as I thought. Was expecting more tiny parts and whatnot but from what I've been told this is one of the more simpler kits.

Looks like that did the job. Thanks!

What's the best 3rd Party Decal maker? Seem to be so many chinese ones. Remember buying some Freedom decals from Samueldecal and they weren't precut and had lots of spelling errors, wanna have waterslides for the MG FA Unicorn but didn't want to buy the premium decal version since I already had one in the backlog, have the OVA decals so I really only need it for the FA parts, but I'm also curious about it since I'd like some for the Banshee without converting it to the Norn

There's some stuff Amiami sells cheaper than HLJ. Most of it is about the same and shipping differences often mitigate that difference. The private warehouse can often make HLJ cheaper if you combine orders across months and also makes HLJ better for backordered items.

>Know what you need
I don't need any of the stuff Amiami sells. This generally isn't an issue for plamo, but for other things you can get more information that makes products less worthwhile. Changing one's mind from time to time is hardly childish either.

>Know your budget
Also not an issue, but if something does arise its nice to do I can dimonsome plastic crack to free up funds without going into my stash.

I missed the chance. My LCS had a pretty common customer who grabs what new kits they get in quick. My loss, I might grab a MG Providence Gundam kit that's been sitting for a while. Thanks for the opinions!

Finished setting the base for the putty work on her top half and waiting for it to cure a bit more before sculpting some details. I hope I'm doing this right. The back of her hair is curing in a fixed position on a stick since I needed a specific angle. This should give a good idea of where I'm heading with this now.

Protip: Duplicolor Adhesion Promoter. It's like primer for vinyl and flexibles.

How to use?

As it says on the back of the can, mist it a couple of times but not a wet coat, wait 2-3 minutes, and then before your ten minutes are up, spray down your primer layer, so you can start spraying actual paints.

You can thank me later.

Mr Resin Primer or Mr Primer Surfacer 1000 work just as well and you can airbrush them, but that's not the point.

Point is, these parts are vinyl because they are supposed to flex for better articulation and your paint will crack as soon as you flex this shit.

Fuck vinyl.
>>
>>6519495

Adhesion Promoter is literally made for flexible plastics. You don't literally use it as primer, it's a weakener/pre-treatment for the surface so it can accept paint solvents properly.
