For those unfamiliar, "Plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model." If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.

New Due Date 10/31

Frame Arms Group Build

This time the idea is to build any Frame Arms, or Frame Arms Girl kit, and paint and customize it.

The rules are overall pretty simple, the base must be recognizable as FA or FA Girl, other than that there's no limit on what you can do.

Due Date: October 31st

Note: This is a prize build, there will be a prize provided by me, there will also be a mystery prize provided by another anon. That means that to enter, I need WIP pictures submitted before the due date. Simply email me some pictures of you working on it, I don't care at what point, as long as it's possible to tell where your final product came from.

Prize Pack:
MSG Free Style Bazooka
MSG Impact Knuckle
MSG Beast Sword
MSG Assault Rifle #2
Miscellaneous supplies

I'm probably going to add more, but I'll let those be a secret.

Email: [email protected]

I'm also available via IRC and Steam

MG zaku 2.0 is definitely the best.

>>
If I'm going to just detail and panel line, but not do a complete coat otherwise, is there a clear primer I should use? It works OK without primer on a spoon, at least, but it's not clear in the guides.
>>
>>6488840
why don't you put your trip on?
>>
>>6488953
I believe that unless you've got a clear coat separating the layers, you don't want to put acrylics on top of acrylics because the wet will just melt the dry layer of paint.
>>
>>6488999
With that method, you're supposed to take an unpainted model or a painted and coated model. I'm just wondering if you can take a mixture of clear thinner and acrylic paints and get the same effect.

If you can grab more than one then the HG Origin is really nice out of box too.
>>

i heard that the origin has amazing articulation for a HG

the RG is neat to me cause I never built an RG

Master Grade is Master grade so I cant go wrong there but the 2.0 kits been out a while and im not sure if the new modern kit articulation of RG and the New Origin HG just blow out the MG

Totally agreed. MG Zaku 2.0 is iconic and still a really fucking good kit, but...Origin is exciting and fresh and has a nice panel line layout. The sniper rifle is also a lot of fun, and it poses well.

The Origin one is so cheap, there is no reason not to own it alongside a 2.0.

Questions, any one know how strong is the stickers for the super minipla Daizyujin set?

I had ideon set, and the stickers for that one is pure shit. (might have something to do with how thick they are)

Depend on it I might have to paint the sticker detail.
>>
>>6489135
theyre shit

they will peal off easily after a month you either want to paint it or if you arnt the artsy type use the sticker and seal it with a few layers of top coat to keep the stickers on
>>

dont know about that one in particular but I have a lot of the kabaya sentai mini pla sets (7 or 8 combiner sets). The stickers are shit on all of them, painting is definitely the best option.

who do you think he is and who are you that you care so much?

>>6489164
Sanding to a finish is one way, but they do make matte topcoats. Additionally you can put any topcoat over any paint, but to prevent any unwanted chemical interactions, usually discoloration of paint or topcoat, you'll need to wait for the underlayer to fully chemically cure before topcoating. Acrylics will run you quite a few days, I wait a week to stay safe.
>>
>>6489098
FUckin hell, you have the popcorn tubs. I'm jelly.

Also, yes, get the Origin. It's true that the MG has better engineering, but the Origin holds its own pretty well and I like the way it looks + its colors better than the MG.

Because most people don't want to display the inner frame. Only frames that actually have multicolored parts would be the N, Hi Nu, and the Sazabi. Specially the Sazabi who has a clear parts version in mind when they designed it.

Paint. The discoloration is caused by variations in the metallic pigment's distribution within the plastic.

It's pretty neat and comes with an extra water decal sheet for all the other SEED mg kits. Gonna require airbrushing though, as the "white" parts are actually dolphin grey
>>
what do you guys like to do with all the boxes once you're done building? keep em? throw them away? re-purpose?
>>
>>6490573
Mostly throw away. I have 3 however I've kept. I use an RG kit box for holding my tools, and I have 2 MG boxes, one for holding left over bits, and another for holding the build manuals and left over decals
>>
>>6490573
I've made fake "prints" out of the Sazabi Ver. Ka and Nu Gundam Ver. Ka boxes. Otherwise I store the boxes in my attic.

I usually just toss 'em. If I like the artwork I'll cut that off and throw it in the box I use for holding spare/alternate parts but aside from that they're junk.
>>
>>6490573

I keep them like a hoarder, but then I run out of space occasionally so I suck it up and bin them. I usually keep box artwork and flatten it.

Not entirely hopeless (pic related is Tamiya Gunmetal with some future for better flow), but I wouldn't expect it to look good on a long smooth piece like a sword blade.

I strongly recommend getting a spray can.
>>
>>6490968
>Dude nice, what does the Japanese in the corner say
baka desu
>>
>>6490974
Yea but how big is the piece.

The problem with any handpainting is the bigger the surface area, the more likely for brush strokes to appear.

>>6490316
I personally found a neat trick on accident for this type of metallic pieces (only works on ones like in your first pic and not top layered chrome metallics).

Take metallic gundam markers, or something equivalent and coat the piece in a similar color (silver for silver pieces, gold for gold.)

Let it set for about a minute at most, then take a q-tip with acetone and carefully wipe the excess paint off. What will happen is the acetone with "melt" a top layer of the metallic paint into the piece, and give a better metallic sheen compared to what you get otherwise out of the box. Doesnt work as well on LARGE surface areas, because sometimes the acetone won't remove the full layering, but it still leaves a nice effect on accent parts.

Thanks for the tips. I stopped at the hobby store earlier today and got the most shiniest stuff they had. On my cutlery it actually painted on fine unthinned, I was surprised. Possibly a bit too sparkly for a sword, though - the "flat aluminum" might be better. Far better than the nubs and flow marks of the unpainted plastic (below), though.

I didn't know there were silver gundam markers! This sounds like it would give a much finer shininess than the coarse sparkles in the paint.

On a related note, with the exception of the chrome silver, I'm not having great luck with hand painting with the Tamiya acrylic paints (the spray ones are good). I can get acceptable results, but it usually takes at least 4 coats, which is obnoxious when doing details.

I might jump ship and try the Vallejos soon.
>>
>>6491185
As someone else doing a hand painted Tamiya build, I've similarly learned they're not useful for it. They worked great with my airbrush which is why I wanted to test them for hand painting. Vallejo should be much better from what people have told me. Their Model Color line is primarily for hand paint, the Model Air is airbrush.
>>
>>6491185
Tamiya is notoriously bad for hand painting. I used to use them forever ago and well, there's a reason I use Vallejo now

While Vallejo are indeed best for hand painting a warning, even for Vallejo metallics are still a bitch with hand painting. Interesting to hear that Tamiya chrome worked alright for you though, I might have to give that a try myself. It's a pain in the butt to do metallic detailing on very small areas with spray or air.
>>
Using Tamiya acrylics and thinner, how long after airbrushing the first light coat on a piece should I wait till going back to it? What I've been doing is waiting the same time as in Vegeta8259's tutorial but he uses lacquer thinner.
>>
>>6491518
Do all your parts of that color back to back, by the time you circle back around to the first one you can paint it again, that's what was told to me and it hasn't failed me yet.
>>
>>6491416
What figures are you even supposed to use these for?
>>
>>6491556
How long do you wait for few parts like say 5? I've read up that acrylics need 1 hr to be sure that it's dry but that seems too much.
>>
>>6491518
Personally, most of my coats go on immediatly after. Ive never had a problem except once and that was cause I over coated. By the time Im finished with my set of parts the first one is dry enough to put more paint on for me.
Also note I run my paints fairly thin with close to a 50/50 mix of paint/thinner so your results might be different.
>>
>>6491582
Five them 5 mins extra then. Youll want to give the clear coat the longest amount of time.

>>
Hey o. Looking to get back into model building. I want to build a robot with either a huge sword. Or a big ass gatling guns. Any suggestions. Cheaper the better. Limit is about 50-75 bucks.
>>
>>6492260
MG Heavyarms Gundam has a fuck ton of gatling guns and missiles and shit.
MG Strike Rogue has a big beam sword, and on the cheaper and smaller scale end the HG Helmwige Reinkar has a big sword too.
>>
>>6492259
I usually just do the details because during some articulation the inner mechanics are exposed. I do think a complete repaint of the frame looks good, especially if done in a glossy black.
>>
>>6492260
The Barbatos Lupus has a relatively big sword, and the Lupus Rex has a Giant mace.

The blue Astray has a Giant sword, and as the other dude said, the heavyarms is a good option for a handheld gatling gun and is loaded with rockets
>>
>>6492263
Yeah, I was thinking I'd just paint the details that are sticking out. I wanna do up some real grades in the future and the whole frame business was intimidating me.

It'll be about half an inch or so bigger than the SD once done.

It'll take a quite a bit more effort than an SD but the final result will look impressive.

Be careful in cutting out the frame and small parts, extra caution never hurt anyone.

As for the small parts, there's quite a bit so look at the instructions carefully.

Read the guide, it has good tips on removing nubs and stuff.

Get an Action Base 2 ASAP, it'll look much better in flight than standing. You can also display the 0 Raiser and the 00 Gundam separately if you desire.
>>
>>6492534
My grille was worn down to the fiberglass after 15+ years of driving so I decided to do some redneck bodywork and spray paint it. Gunpla taught me how to mask, paint properly to avoid pooling and the like as well as to reverse wash (kind of) the emblem because there was no way in hell I was going to be able to mask it off. The job came out looking okay but isn't quite factory because I made the conscious decision not to go all out and sand the old parts first.

Not exactly.

The 00 Raiser is made up of two components: the robot proper, the 00 Gundam, and its backpack, the 0 Raiser, which is also a plane. You get both in one kit.

00 Gundam + 0 Raiser = 00 Raiser.

Pictured is my own 00 Raiser, which is in 1/100 MG scale.

Opinions on loot crate's store selling a random gunpla( Barbatos, Man Rodi, Hyakuren, Grimgerde, Graze Standard Type/Commander Type, McGillis' Schwalbe Graze ) for 7.50 USD?

With loot crates you're pretty much always getting the dregs of a store's stock, what no one else wanted. The only time that makes sense is when you're okay with almost literally anything. Cheap practice kits aren't one of those situations for me at least; even if I know I'm probably going to make a mess I want to make a mess of something I give half a damn about. $7.50 extra is worth that to me, plus I know I'll be getting something good to practice whatever technique I want to work on.

Does anybody have suggestions for a good Chainsword stand-in for a HG Gundam?
>>
>>6493220
I don't think there's any at the right scale. Given the blocky shape, though, it shouldn't be too hard to make out of styrene.
>>
>>6493220
Imperial Knight Chainsword from 40k is as close as you're gonna get probably, and even that's gonna need some modding to get the arm off it.

Probably a preorder for an incoming restock/new production run.

I love it, but it's not very flexible really due to how heavy it is and how bulky the armor is. Also, it curiously comes with four beam saber hilts, but only two beam blades... which is pretty baffling when it's one of the few suits capable of wielding four.

That said, if you love The O and you've got the cash, there's no reason not to get it. It's got great detail all around and looks great despite not having the best range of motion.
>>

not a bad idea, especially if you have experience painting the vehicles/large units.
topcoat's easy to find

>>6493220
You can mod up or straight-out use Koto's Dynamic Chainsaw. Thous at that size it's be a Chain-Great/Bastard Sword.
Bonus: It's wind-up.

yeah i know it takes practice but damn i dont know how many bad gundams id go through first im thinking i might just use SD gundams as a stepping stone

>>

SD kits are pretty good, as are model planes and cars.
>>
>>6494326
Im the same way. Airbrushing can hide a lot of sins especially if your doing shading. Pick up a master airbrush from amazon and go at it for a bit. Dont buy a super expensive airbrush till you get comfortable with the cheapo ones and try to learn to build a good solid coat of paint and then learn shading. After that you can upgrade and branch out. Also learn to spray primer as youll save a small fortune vs buying sray cans.
Also yes. Buy 5-6 sd kits and learn on them.
>>

1 piece of advice from me: use acrylics so you can strip easily and try again.

Overnight in pic related or 5 min in 99% isopropanol in sonic cleaner.
>>
>>6494373
That's exactly why I love using tamiya. Don't even need a sonic cleaner, just 10 minutes in a cup of windex and light scrubbing with an old soft toothbrush under the faucet strips all the paint right off, usually without even effecting the primer underneath.
>>
I just got my first single-blade nipper (Gundam Planet). I usually use Tamiya double bladed ones. This thing cuts smooth as butter, I can feel it shearing easily through the plastic and that's so satisfying. BUT, it seems to get stuck really easily. Like, after the cut is done, the blade stays wedged between the part and the gate, sometimes very tightly. It's nerve wracking pulling it out, especially since I don't want to risk damaging the blade.

Am I doing something wrong, or are single blade nippers just like this?
>>
>>6494558
>Am I doing something wrong, or are single blade nippers just like this?
Both.

Use your old nippers to cut parts off the gates, then cut pieces of gate off the parts with your new nippers.
>>
>>6494351
I disagree with the suggestion of SD kits mainly because the small, squished details that really need to be masked are an extra, unnecessary pain.
>>

Thanks, I just used Tayama Clear Orange Acrylic on the interior of the cockpit until I got a good result.

Is it imperative to topcoat to preserve the decals ? I've a zeta plus on my shelf with a bunch of raw dry transfert on it.

15 eurobucks for a variety pack of five sanding sticks. Is that a fair price?
I've been using big pieces of sanding paper so far, but I'm worried they're bad quality/mislabeled grain chinese shit, because I can't get the finish I want.
>>
>>6495326
What's the brand? If its squadron, my experience is that they're only good for refining finishes, the courser ones are not that good.
>>
I remember reading somewhere that you should use gloss clearcoat before panel line and weathering and the clearcoat of your choice on the final top coat, how true is this ? literally just follow instructions. Anyone who can use tools and remove nubs and not hamhand any parts can build an MG. I don't get where this meme about MG's being super difficult compared to HG's comes from. They just have more parts. They're also funner to build IMO.

>>

This. MGs are just more parts to put together and not technically any harder than HGs, there's just more steps due to more parts. There's really no reason why a complete beginner couldn't start with a MG as long as they can follow instructions.
>>
Never ordered any gunpla from Mandarake before. The shipping cost comes from the size or the weight?

Size. Which sucks because gunpla and scale models in general tend to be on the larger side.
IIRC, around 3 MGs will run you ~5000 JPY, and on a recent order where I got 4 MGs it was ~8000 JPY.

The China kit doesn't have an official height for the "real" one since it's just supposed to be a "girl in a costume" kit that Sei made at some point and left in the school's club room. Nothing outranks the good ol' Zaku II in my book.

>>
>>6495901

Yeah, I know there's no height listed, per se, but the plastic model has physical dimension, and it does explicitly say "1/144", so even by Bandai standards, the height of the hypothetical 1:1 thing the model is based on should be approximately 140-150 times the height of the model.

(Where I got 25 meters from was just looking at that photo and comparing the height of the Strike to the height of the Chinagguy and multiplying by the listed 17.7 meters for the Strike. (It came out to 23.5.))

I remember when I was in Yodobashi, I was shopping around the Gundam section and an American kid (maybe 16 or 17) came up who was just getting into Gundam. He asked me how to tell how difficult each build was, and I said that he should start on the ones that say "HG" since they have fewer parts and take less time to build.
I told him that they're all pretty much as easy as each other, since it's just putting pieces of plastic together after all, and this fucking blew his mind. He couldn't comprehend that there weren't levels of difficulty, but I guess that's just a result of other modelling series having different tiers.

I'm at my wits end about fixing this.

I don't know why it broke, the other three were fine; this was the last one and it just snapped like butter. I could just pin the piece or something but then I couldn't transform it. Anybody have an idea of how to fix a broken hinge-clamp like this?

I was trying to get it with the thin cement, and then super glue, and now I'm at the point where I'm trying to, "melt" shaved off pieces of plastic onto it to try and reinforce it using the cement...

>>
Anyone built their one of these yet?
Considering ordering one.

Wait 1 month for the hg origin zaku II c type. It has all the detail and wonderful articulation of the origin zakus, the colors of the original, and a ton of weapons.
>>
HGBF GMs are in stock on BHobby, jsyk
>>
>>6496206
That better be a regular release.
>>
>>6496268
I don't see anything about it being P-Bandai on the page
>>
>>6496047
WHAT??? Another RG Zaku?! I thought they had given up on making more RG Zakus after Origin Zaku kits came out. Also, those parts... does this mean they're going to actually make tristar or Gouf RGs anytime soon?
>>
>>6496206
Is that a Zaku Half Cannon? Finally Bandai has some good taste.
>>
>>6496293
I'd rather have a HG Zaku cannon

SAL on HLJ for two kits is a mere 10 IOU notes.
HLJ are saints.

My pg knee joint snapped the first time I tried to transform it.

The shoulder dealies that pop up the the torso broke when I tried to put it back yo normal mode.

Those c-joints are notioriously bad

Sweet!! At least it's already on the HG Origin architecture. I hate having to kitbash these variants from HGUC over.

>Preorder kit months in advance of release
>Find a spot for it in my backlog box of shame immediately after
>Receive kit months later
>Put it in backlog box of shame
>Forget I own it
Feels good, man.

I'm loving being out of my building rut.
Most of the paint done for my Frame Arms: Girl GN-X crossover.
Just the custom faceplates and weapons to go and she's set.

No visible nubs, proper panel lining, the stickers are on the model properly. Don't think a topcoat was applied? I'd give it a 5/5 for your first model kit, it's nice.
>>
>>6496852
The dildo pics really complete it though, though they should be pics of the gunpla dildos

I didn't even notice the background, that's hilarious.

No top coat yet because I'm thinking of painting it.

How do you like the kit? I heard it wasn't great, but I've ended up with all the Option Kits with extras for it, so still tempted.

Under the leg armor for that, are the leg sections to make the tri star or matsunaga versions, it's literally the R1 with armor plates on top of the legs.

Anyways Hard points are sexy!

With how well the unicorn is doing, give it like 2 months and you'll get an announcement
>>
>>6492834
They most likely have the data and sculpt completed already, and are waiting a bit before putting it out, question is will it be norn or the regular one being released as retail.
>>
>>6496075
the 2.0 frame is good but i don't think it was ever meant to be used on that monstrosity of a flying arsenal.
>>
So I have some older kits that I used stickers on where the stickers didn't stick, so I superglued the stickers on. Is there anything I can do to get the stickers off reasonably, or is it a lost cause?
