For those unfamiliar, "Plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model." If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.

New Due Date 10/31

Frame Arms Group Build

This time the idea is to build any Frame Arms, or Frame Arms Girl kit, and paint and customize it.

The rules are overall pretty simple, the base must be recognizable as FA or FA Girl, other than that there's no limit on what you can do.

Due Date: October 31st

Note: This is a prize build, there will be a prize provided by me, there will also be a mystery prize provided by another anon. That means that to enter, I need WIP pictures submitted before the due date. Simply email me some pictures of you working on it, I don't care at what point, as long as it's possible to tell where your final product came from.

Prize Pack:
MSG Free Style Bazooka
MSG Impact Knuckle
MSG Beast Sword
MSG Assault Rifle #2
Miscellaneous supplies

I'm probably going to add more, but I'll let those be a secret.

Email: [email protected]

I'm also available via IRC and Steam

How harsh on underlying layers are Testors' rattlecans for the final topcoats?

Is acrylic topcoat in >>6497052
any decent for plamo that gets handled and posed?
>>
So I read the guide and im kind of confused as to original casts vs recasts. Are they both "official" model kits? Or are recasts similar to third party transformers, not official, but bandai lets them do their business.

Also, do they still make zoid kits? I only ever see 1/100 + scale stuff on HLJ, and theyre over 100$...
>>
>>6497251
It's the latter for recasts or stuff from DM and Daban. And yes, Kotobukiya makes Zoid kits under their HMM line, but they can get pricey due to both the size and rarity, as Koto hates reprinting things that aren't FAGs. There's the 1/144 MSS line from Tomy as well.
>>
>>6497218
I've never had any problems with using testors matte spray over acrylics. I don't really use it now though because it's not matte enough for my taste.
>>
>>6497253
So in a really round about way its almost like the smaller companies work along side bandai? For instance there's mold X, bandai makes it's own kits of X and sells them, then also sells the mold to 3 other companies who print their own version of X and sell it too?
>>
>>6497258
Oh not really, I think DM is the only non-Bandai entity that has some sort of seal of approval (I don't remember what exactly). Anyone doing resin work is just recasting, or occasionally making their own molds.
>>
>>6497254
What's your go-to for topcoats and matte?
>>
>>6497266
Matte is hard because it's so easy to fuck up and potentially ruin a paint job at the final stage with frosting. At the moment I'm using Vallejo matte through my airbrush and it hasn't gone bad for me yet.

Testors cans never gave me any frosting issues and I know a lot of people swear by them, but as I said the finish was just not quite matte enough for what I wanted.

tamiya x-19 Smoke is 'clear grey' right?

i can use it for a grey candy coat instead of using metallic grey? is metallic grey even actually metallic, being flat (XF) and all?

More like:
>Chinese company makes a mold of X without a license.
>Other chinese companese take the now illegal kit of X and recast it to sell themselves.
>Some other company eventually takes that recast and makes another recast of the recast.
>Kawaguchi bitches about bootlegs and illegal third party kits on twitter.

In that order.

Also, there are official third party and garage kit stuff, but their almost entirely made with super limited licenses and only sold at major modeling events.

Different anon here, absolute best matte topcoats are Tamiya TS-18 and Mr. Super Clear Flat. These both give a beautiful velvety matte with very minimal reflectivity (cast light distributes itself smoothly across the surface rather than forming distinct visible shapes like on bare plastic). I can practically guarantee that one of those two products was used to topcoat this Gouf. Note how the light forms harsh and visible shapes on the bare plastic, and how much it smooths out on the topcoated one.

Testors is cheaper and easier to find, but it's not worth it IMO. It won't give you nearly as smooth and nice of a surface (examined closely you will see visible grit), and it's not as matte, so you will still see vague pinpoints of reflected light in it. Don't waste your money, just spend a few bucks more and get an actually nice topcoat.
>>
>>6497389
To the point where it reaches E2046 and the mold becomes absolute trash.

Another comparison. Mr. Hobby on left, Testors on right. You can see that the Testors is much more reflective, and the gross visible grain texture.

Does anybody here airbrush Tamiya Sky Grey? Do you ever have any issues with it separating in the airbrush cup and needing to be remixed?
>>
>>6497393
that's a pretty shit comparison.
It's out of focus and the angles don't match.
You can even see the same type of reflection on the left on on top as the reflection in the top-middle on the right.

And the visible texture could just be not being shaken enough, as the orange peel look is from the talc bunching up or sprayed too much on.

of course, I'm not saying Testors is good, just that the comparison is awfully flawed.
>>
>>6497401
Yeah, I admit it's pretty shitty. It's not my pic and I was having trouble finding a comparison on Google at all. But having used both, and knowing I sprayed them with proper technique, Testors actually DOES catch more light and have a shitty texture irl. So even though it's a bad (and possibly flawed) comparison, it does serve as an accurate visual for my personal experience.
>>
>>6497398
invest in mr color instead. it sprays much better.

Any paint separates if insufficiently mixed. They sell these special tools called mixing sticks (TM) to remedy the problem.

You need to mix it in the bottle for 1-2min before thinning then for 1-2 min after thinning before you put it in the cup.

Late response, I know. Thanks for the info. It's interesting to see just how many kits and figures were actually released here in the US. Bandai and Sunrise must've really banked on 0079 and all the UC spinoffs being a hit in the west.

On a related note, I also got my hands on an American HGUC GP03S. This one's funny since they completely rearranged the box design. The kit inside is exactly the same as the Japanese release. It even comes with the Core Fighter, which the American HGUC RX-78-2 didn't come with for some reason.

But there's a warning to not use it on top of decals or it'll eat them, IIRC? Mr Top Coat isn't harsh on decals?

On the other hand, just as bad, with Krylon matte sprays is that if you look at the ingredients, the presence of naptha indicates they're enamel-based, but some are anti-UV.

Mission Models has a clear coat for matte, but you're required to spray all their stuff unthinned. Not sure how much UV resistance their stuff has either.

Hamma Hamma assembled! The thing is really big and has a lot of moving parts. Front skirts can pop off if you lift them too high. The joint where the leg connects to the hip doesn't hold very well, but some glue will fix that. The ankles are sturdier than I imagined and it can stand well once you balance it out.

I like Prime92's reviews, but that may be a no-go for you if you can't get past her nasal pitch-bent voice. I've also been watching ZakuAurelius' videos lately. He's a lot like the TF/KR reviewer Peaugh, in that he's pretty decent at what he does and covers most new releases quickly, but he's also a bit boring and by-the-books.

Anyone have any good reccs for fun build channels? Sometimes I just wanna space out and watch someone build a kit while they chatter on about whatever. Boy, I wish Thew had kept on building plamo, his Koto Skywarp build vid was a lot of fun.

Yeah ZakuAurelius is good if you just want straight informational out of box reviews.

I like vegeta8259, he's very relaxing to listen to and a pretty good builder, very thorough with his process and always trying out new things and improving.
When I first started out all I saw was snapbuilt review after review, but I'm experienced to be okay putting in some work into kits so dalong is about all I need to check. Like do I really need to watch a 5 minute video telling me that an HG is, surprise, HG quality? I'm also now buying kits for their designs, not for how many degrees the ankle armor bends or if it can do the splits.
With that in mind I find a lot more value in vegeta's style of video, WIP of painted builds and garage kits, going over his process, techniques and hurdles, also does a good amount of scratch building, modifications, putty, pla-plate, etc. I enjoy seeing how others work and learn a lot from it.

>Anyone have any good reccs for fun build channels? Sometimes I just wanna space out and watch someone build a kit while they chatter on about whatever.
This guy might fit the bill, though he edits and only talks about the build and what he's doing at each step, not really random chatter while building over a long time, but its still good to space out to

Third kit. Tried removing nubs with a hobby knife this time, but ended up having to sand half of them down due to a cut finger.

So I guess if I'd have to rate the builds I've done so far,

MS 05 ZAKU I > RGM-79 Powered GM > RGM-79C GM Type C

My biggest issue with this build is that it does require additional painting out of the box. The hand guards are that nasty grey color, and the two white hand guards don't fit on the closed fist or the open fist for the beam saber. Also, the shin armor was flimsy as fuck and doing any leg poses basically caused the entire lower leg to fall apart, so I had to use thin cement to glue the three shin pieces together.as well as the ankle guards. Arm joints below the shoulder feel weak as well, but I don't think they'll fall off or anything, just not as tight as I'd like them to be. Haven't been able to top coat him, since it's 3AM in murrikaland and it's too dark outside.

Gunna head down to the hobby shop tomorrow to see if they got any new kits in, and if they have a MG I might get it. Also going to check on how much they're selling paints for, because I think the 79C would look good with some acrylic wash weathering, which is apparently a very beginner friendly thing to do.

I've still got the legs and weapons to do, but it's probably one of the most enjoyable builds I've ever done.
I remember building the first MG RX-178, and that was a real bore. Even the RG I didn't find that enjoyable. But boy, this one is addictive.
Wiring wise, it's actually really simple. There are two LEDs, one for the head and another for the cockpit. The wires lead to contacts in the back.
The backpack contains the batteries (two LR43s) and when you fit it on, the circuit is completed. There's an on-off switch at the top of the backpack that is hidden behind a facade that you can slide off.
I haven't got any pictures of it opened up, but there's a whole bunch of mechanisms going on. Lots of pistons, as you'd expect, and there are metal chains that they use instead of the fabric tubes on the MG/RG.
>>

Weird, I had no issue with the hip connections, but I had to tighten the ankles to all hell. Also, maybe it's just me, but the skirt armor looks/flows better if you switch the first two parts on either side. Like swap the armor in front of the thigh with the thruster that covers the side of the thigh

So uh, was this a good deal? It was cheap and I was looking for a good master grade kit for my first MG.

Also i got a little bottle of Vallejo air weathering paint. It says it's for air brushing, but the dude said I could use it as a regular wash. He said it wouldn't need thinner, just paint then lightly wipe off. It was only like $2 so o I figured why not?
>>
>>6499937
This is not a MG though, it's a Full Mechanics, which is sorta midway between a HG and a MG, it has an inner frame and 1/100 scale, but much less detail than a MG, so they're easier.

Hey guys!

I just built this thing and it looks great out-of-the-box, save for the stickers which I will paint later on.

The build design is so great and the boast at it's great articulation especially in the legs! Building this kit makes me feel like I go back in time since this was released in the mid 1990s. My only problem is the left foot is a bit loose due to the polycap.

I also consider buying Rebuild Kits. My questions are :

Are they as good as this one? How about the arm articulation, can they do the swivel motion as well?

Also, what I should be worried about this kit in the long run? I'm going to buy the Unit 2 next month.

I think 1/144 Grimgerde is the superior kit due to having better proportions. They sorta fucked up the proportions on the 1/100. I know it doesn't seem like such a big deal in the comparison, but all the little proportional changes and the shortened skirts really add up to a worse-looking suit imo.

But if that doesn't bother you, it's a fine enough kit.
>>
>>6500405
The Rebuild kits are quite a step up engineering wise. I recommend the ones Koto made, and yes, they can do the swivel motion due to having a swivel-hinge joint at the elbow rather than a seamless arm like the LM HGs.

Go look up WWI and WWII anti-tank rifles, like the one pictured up there. Stuff like the Boys Anti-Tank, the Lahti, and things of that nature. Also look into things chambered in 14mm, 15mm, and 20mm, you should get some interesting stuff.

That's not to say you're on a bad path, but they definitely have a not real feeling to them.

Also, Forgotten Weapons is a good source for old stuff.
>>
>>6501658
Is it absolutely necessary that a gun needs to be realistic in a setting with giant robots and understanding? Sei's build strike has a pretty futuristic weapon look, but it's nothing you'd see in reality.

There are mainly two important things to think about.

Construction. Is a particular area of a gun large enough to receive another component? Does the rest of the gun need to be as thick as that part?

Ergonomics. Does it feel good to handle? Handguards are thicker and rounder than the rest of the gun because humans need a comfortable partial grip on it. Why is the grip thinner and greater in depth? Because you want a grip where it's comfortable to pull the trigger. Is the safety in an easy to reach place? Is the magazine release in a comfortable place and is it a good idea to have a groove so your finger fits right into place?

I'd argue ergonomics plays a larger role in modern aesthetics. WWII-era weapons probably had more to do with manufacturing capabilities than anything else. Perhaps misguided common sense was a second.

Most modern MGs would do great, just ask us before purchasing if you wanna know specifics about a certain kit. MG Z'Gok is still a good kit even though it's old, but yeah, you might be a bit overloaded with Z'Goks.

I guess I'd probably recommend MG GM Sniper II. I just built it and it's goddamn beautiful. Really great engineering and articulation, it was just a lot of fun to build.

I would also recommend 1/100 Graze Kai, or any of the RE/100 releases except Nightingale (which I think wasn't done very well). Keep in mind that RE/100s won't have full inner frames though, like a proper MG or the IBO 1/100s do. They're kind of like big high grades that happen to have a higher parts count and excellent color separation. I'm not saying that's a bad thing by any means, by the way--after the GM Sniper II, I'd rank the RE/100s really high on my list of enjoyable builds recently.

I'm guessing there's a peg right there, and the deep, cylindrical volume jutting out of an otherwise thin, flat cavity in the mold is allowing the plastic to shrink down into the peg. I think polystyrene has 0.5~1.0% shrinkage ratio?

It's a pretty mediocre-at-best MG. If you really want a Unicorn, get the RG instead, or the MG Unicorn OVA version (pic related) if you really want a 1/100 Unicorn.

I suggest picking something else like the RX-78-2 2.0/Origin/3.0, Zaku II 2.0, GM Sniper II or the Aile Strike ver. RM instead as a first MG.

Thanks, I was thinking of getting that too. I just really want a Unicorn that's all. My first HG was the bellpepper, I guess I'll be ok.

the 0.5mm pla plate was thin enough to be easily bent into shape. 0.75mm was a bit harder(and this is probably terrible advice) so i use the very tip of the flame on a lighter to heat it slightly. get too close and it'll burn. the tubes were hollow so they were pretty easy to heat up and move into shape.

First timer here looking for some painting tips. I have about half of the parts cut/sanded and just washed them in a dish soap/water solution, air drying currently.

I have a spray primer (Tamiya gray surface primer) and some Tamiya acrylics that I plan on brush painting on, also some Tamiya paint thinner and Tamiya flat clear coat. My plan is to place all the parts on a piece of cardboard and spray them with primer on my porch, then once they're mostly dry take them inside to brush paint them, then clear coat the major pieces (legs, torso, etc) that won't move.

I'm just looking for some general tips and any problems with my approach. One of my concerns is that a) when the paint is drying outside dust particles will get into the coat, how to avoid? And b) fogging of the clear coat, I live in south east USA so it can be a bit humid here. Also, can I panel line with black paint or should I really get panel lining markers?

Questions about weathering: has anyone used Mr. Weathering color? I want to try it on a build. If I understand correctly, I just brush it on, let it sit, then wipe it off.

Second, when should I do That? I've snapped and painted my kit, and I intend to topcoat after the paint has cured a while. Should I do decals, lining, then topcoat again before applying weathering color? Because I've seen some people forego lining and apply decals afterwards with weathering color also.

And should I dry brush before or after the weathering color?

TL;DR: anyone used Mr weathering color? When is the best time to weather in the build process?
>>

long post, but need some questions to be answered
i had these sanding sticks with me for a very long time and wanted to clean them. i assumed i just needed to dunk them in water to clean it, but 2 of the 4 seemed to be "melting", the grit being washed away while the other 2 are completely fine(the orange and blue in the pic related are the ones melting). was this a terrible thing to do and something to avoid or was there just something wrong with those 2 in particular
since i dont know the grit to these sanding sticks, wanted to get some sand paper/ sanding sticks from 500-1000ish grit. i can only eyeball the ones i have. should i bite the bullet and buy some tamiya/mr hobby sandpaper or are these fine alternatives

Most of the stickers aren't too bad. The worst stickers are the ones on the flower and leaf on her head, and the one on her chest.

If anything, the stickers on the chest should've been just the thin blue strips. If you can paint this (which I myself plan to do so in the future), you should.

>>6503048

It was probably not an ingenious idea to wash sanding sticks in water. Sandpaper is essentially sand glued to paper, and while the sand doesn't mind the water, the paper and the glue are both things that could potentially turn to mush.

There are special types of sandpaper that are designed for "wet sanding", it's just like normal sanding, except you put water on the part so it mixes with the grit and creates a different (smoother) sanding behaviour. That type of sandpaper will be made with a type of glue and a type of backing that is OK with water.

Other than that, in my experience any sandpaper is for the most part like any other sandpaper. Whether it's sold in tiny pieces by a name brand like Tamiya, or in large sheets at the hardware store for a much lower price. There are slight differences, but you'll just have to try them out and find the ones you like.

There are some slight differences in the surface left by abrasive tools. I have a set of needle files that I use for rough shaping and such, and it tends to leave a very flat-ish surface, whereas sandpaper, with all its millions of little grains of sand, will of course leave a streaked washboard surface.

It'd be awesome to see what all the 72 frames look like. We got #1 (Bael) and #71 (Dantalion), but it'd be awesome to see the progress and difference between all of the frames up to #72
But that requires some writes to write an actual plot around the designs and stuff (like how we got the Dantalion and Astaroth)

It'd honestly be awesome to get more than 72 Gundams (Considering several of the frames are reused and given variations like Barbatos 1 through 6/Lupus/Lupus Rex and Guison/Guison Rebake/Full City

In all honesty it'd be a clusterfuck, but I am all up for that. And as said, we've got everything from the Vidar to the Guison as an example so the possibilities are endless really.

4th form with the Smoothbore gun or the wrench mace (Though that is technically part of the 5th form onwards)
Then Lupas Rex after that for the tail.

It's the angle of the photo and the spoons, my dude. At the angles these photos are taken, the spoons are reflecting the ceiling. The photographer IS visible if you look closely and zoom in, on the side of the spoon in the upper right pic.

Also
>chrome patch
The entire spoons are chromed. Some of the sides appear sorta black because that's just the way lighting affects chromed surfaces.

Nice job. Those faceplates are really cool, too.

Just wondering, how many coats of mr color flat do you do? I have some in the mail.
>>
>>6503974
2 coats does the trick usually

4th form is just perfection. It's got such good proportions and armor and weapon loadout. Best "main" MS design in a show in ages imo. I bought three damn kits of this design and don't regret it one bit.

Second best is probably Lupus in my book. I'm not in love with the feet (honestly I kinda hate all the Barbatos feet aside from the original 1st-5th form ones) but the rest of the Lupus design is cool enough to make up for it. Oh, I also don't really like the large upward angled front skirts, it makes it look like it barely has any midsection, which makes the torso look stumpy and squashed.

Started testing airbrushing today on spoons.
This is a lot harder than I thought.

Looks good but the choice of narrow eye decals over near round eye sockets was questionable. She looks like she's been drinking heavily the night before.

Are you me? All my tries came out a little orange peel like or too thick

Panel line and top coat or paint that thing, it's bare.

Lay down thin wet coats, that was something I learned after a lot of experimentation.

Local hobby shop finally stocked Mr Primer Surfacer... primer bottles.

On the other hand, how durable is Mr Surfacer 1200 as a primer by itself? I'm still on the fence about another $11 bucks of primer.

I like how you can see the lose arm joints start to collapse under the weight of the gun for a split second

I see. I've seen videos of people using them as a sort of gunk wash before, so I figured that was the primary use.

I bought the Lupus Rex before seeing the anime and wasn't a huge fan of the tail
but seeing it in action, woo boy, that last stand in the final episode is so savage, I can't not love it.

I have had no issues with mr surfacer 1200, but mr primer surfacer might be better. It seems to be more expensive so it would be weird if it wasn't.
