For those unfamiliar, "Plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model." If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.

Frame Arms Group Build

This time the idea is to build any Frame Arms, or Frame Arms Girl kit, and paint and customize it.

The rules are overall pretty simple, the base must be recognizable as FA or FA Girl, other than that there's no limit on what you can do.

Due Date: September 1st

Note: This is a prize build, there will be a prize provided by me, there will also be a mystery prize provided by another anon. That means that to enter, I need WIP pictures submitted before the due date. Simply email me some pictures of you working on it, I don't care at what point, as long as it's possible to tell where your final product came from.

Prize Pack:
MSG Free Style Bazooka
MSG Impact Knuckle
MSG Beast Sword
MSG Assault Rifle #2
Miscellaneous supplies

I'm probably going to add more, but I'll let those be a secret.

Email: [email protected]

I'm also available via IRC and Steam

I just started up the hobby legit, been building gunplas since I was a kid but only revently started doing the extra stuff like painting, nub management, and panel lining. I fucking love it too. This one was painted to match the Origin manga cover. The only downside to this is that it's tough to do it even at like, MG scale. You need much bigger canvases like these busts to get the brushwork visible and the detail to shine, which kind of limits your available options.
>>
>>6480870
>>6480904
Bear in mind you're right now working in absolutes.
Straight red straight white.
I had no idea what solo wing pixy was so I looked it up, and by the graphics of the game it's a slightly darker/duller red, and a dull light gray, so it's not going to be as stark as these test pics are.
>>
>>6480922
I can imagine at MG scale it might be tough. I'm seeing it done more often at PG scale. I'd love to see that or a Megasize get the treatment.

Would love an impressionist style painted mega size or PG.

The game graphics can be very fidgety and does affect the colour tone, I plan to get the right Pixy scheme first before setting down to the right tone. Lighting can be an ass in games. Here the red looks a bit lighter and the white is stark

What should I get?

Also, does old school sharpening work on cheapo nippers?
>>
>>6481066
>hobby sandpaper.
just sandpaper is good, specific hobby brands are overpriced as hell. grab some 400, 1000, and 2000 grit, even higher if you want too.

>Also, does old school sharpening work on cheapo nippers?
you can use sandpaper to sharpen nippers, but i wouldnt even bother. cheap nippers often cut by pinching plastic, which leaves horrible stress marks. sharpening these wont charge his fact. memehands and other high quality nippers like the gp nippers cut by actually cutting the plastic, which leaves the result smooth and minimizes stress marks.

Hi guys, I'm planning to buy this kit from our toy store. And it's my childhood dream to have this ever since I saw it in TV!

I wonder what's the difference between this and Gunpla? Also it seems like there is no large difference between this line and newer evangelion kits aside from part separation.

I'm kinda worried about it's arms though. Is it true that its arms stiffen and cracks in the long run?

First gunpla ever, got it at a con last weekend and had fun putting it together, despite the lack of proper tools. Been considering ordering a couple more, as well as the tools to make it. Would the 1/144 scale shining gundam, and the 1/144 master gundam on the horse be a good choice for what to get next? I'll also be getting a proper sprue snipper and some sandpaper if I do.
>>
>>6481407
>nubs everywhere
Grab yourself a file and some high grit sandpaper (1000~) to buff the plastic after you're done filing.
In terms of 1/144, just get the designs that look appealing to you. If you want something with an inner frame (usually MG tech) and a nice smooth build, consider an IBO kit.
Just keep in mind older HGs tend to be lower quality/harder to build. Bandai has come a long way.
>>
>>6481425
Yeah, those arent actually nubs. Theyre actually my attempt to file stuff down, which have left scratches. Sandpaper is also on my list, next to a proper snipper so I dont need to use a crappy craft knife I have.

Graze Kai. That way you could try experimenting with "customs" with the IBO option sets.

I wouldn't recommend an SD kit nor the Neo Zeong to a beginner.
The Hy-goggs an option but it's also a 2003 kit.
The Graze Kai is simple and modern, so it's the best of the three.

I built a frame arms recently and one of the shoulder ball joint is really loose and can't hold the weight of his arm. Is there any way to give it some tightness back ? I know i was warned against Kotobukiya's joints...

Coat the balljoint and socket with some sort of acrylic gloss and let them sit separated for a day or two, then pop it back in. It should be tighter.

I recently got the Unit -01 version of this as my first model, but I was really pleased with it. Lot of fun to put together, holds poses pretty well. There's a limited selection as far as plastic kits go, you've got Frame Arms Girl's and a few others, but if painting anime waifu's is your thing you're eventually goiing to want to take the plunge into resin garage kits.

As has been said pretty much anything Kotobukiya, FAGs are in now but they've been in the cute girl plamo business for a while now, just look through Dalong's Koto section

I suppose for non-articulated you could also count the figure-rise busts Bandai has been making, there's also things like the PLAMAX minimum factory kits which include Nipako, Strike Witches, Kancolle, Macross and even a GuP one. Nearly GKs at this point but still plastic, not nearly as limited in quantity, cheap and with some color out of the box.

Cool, so 3.0.

Thanks for the advice.
>>
>>6482624
>2.0
Most anime accurate RX-78-2, comes with the beam javelin, hyper hammer, an underslung missile pod for the beam rifle, and the standard shield/hyper bazooka/beam rifle/beam sabers. It and the 3.0 come with core fighters.
>3.0
Based off of the 1/1 RX-78-2 statue, it's a bit like an upscaled RG. However, being in 1/100 means that it's far more stable than the RG, and it has even more color separation, so with only a bit of panel lining it looks stunning. A bit more fidgety than either the 2.0 or Origin, due to how much it's got going on. It and the Origin can equip LEDs.
>Origin
Based on the Origin's RX-78-02, although not 100% accurate to Yas's artwork. Comes with two beam rifles, a shield, an optional shoulder cannon, hyper bazooka, beam sabers, and some effect parts. Does not come with a core fighter, but it actually has an ab crunch unlike the 2.0 and 3.0.

You can't really go wrong with any of them, they're all really great. 3.0 and Origin use the Nu ver. Ka style posable hands, while the 2.0 uses an older set of hands.

Hello. I have new interest in Gunpla. I read the guide. English is not my native language so I hope I have not missed meanings. I have hand tremors so I do not think I will be able to paint well. Does this stop my progression into the hobby? I think I will be able to build them but not paint. Will they look very bad without paint?
>>
>>6483443
I have hand tremors and it doesn't stop me from doing fine work on gunpla.

There are a bazillion ways to steady your arms and hands and keep pieces mounted and steady, and lots of ways to handle small pieces without using your fingers directly.

idk i'm just indecisive, every time i build a kit i think "i could make this look better if i were airbrushing"

can i just disassemble kits and repaint them later?
>>
>>6483584
Yes, I build kits so that they can be disassembled for painting by trimming pegs, building first helps me understand what prep work needs to be like nub sanding, seam welding, etc. After I finish touching up the parts I reassemble them and put them aside and develop ideas for painting them as I save for airbrush funds too.

I disassembled in the order of leg, arm, 2nd leg, 2nd arm. For the first of each limb, I covered the entire yellow piece. Then when I did the pieces for the 2nd limbs, I looked at the figure to see what was actually visible.

I see now looking at it that I did miss a few places since I used Gundam Markers and it's difficult to really get in there with those, but I'm pretty proud of it. This is a kit I was super unhappy with after snapbuilding it because of the yellow parts and my scarring which was a lot worse before I touched it up.

Hides small surface imperfections better for when you need to paint a large smooth piece.

It's honestly great, even though it's nearly a decade old at this point. Fantastic sculpt, poses really well (knees are limited by design though), and comes with a huge arsenal of weapons. Pretty much the only way I would improve it is to color separate the yellow insides of the rest of the thrusters (you only get yellow parts for the shoulder and chest ones).

Anyway, go get it, it's a great kit. I built the SD, MG, and HGUC Kampfers, and the HG was my favorite by far.

looks cool. how do commission kits "work", does the guy pay a set amount for your work, or do you ask for a price after the work is done after seeing how much work you put into it
>>
>>6485146
I did add the grey chipping and some black pigment in the area to try and show that, but it is possible I could add more like a wash without going overboard.

>>6485153
Thanks, dude. This is the first one I've done so I really low balled the price, but at least for me, how I did this and any future work would be:

1. they pay for the kit to be shipped to me/pay me to buy the kit
2. pay for primary paints used at $4 a bottle (so for this, I just charged for 5 colors to be a bit generous). This is after the kit has been snapped.
3. After it's fully painted/weathered, I'll ask for the additional work price, which I'm still wondering how much I should charge for, but asking minimum wage doesn't feel right. We'll say this took 12 hours even though it took more, but I'm kinda leaning toward $10 every 3 hours, rounded down.
>>
>>6484732
Yes. It's waterproof ink, so unless it's going into a porous material such as paper which can absorb it, it's not dying anytime soon. As such, and because plastic is notoriously non-porous, it will smudge as you wipe away excess to sharpen the lines.

>>6484783
>>6484813
This. Rare are the paints with a matte finish, rarer than the semi-gloss. Either see if the company produces a matte additive for their paints or more easily buy any brand of matte topcoat.
Tamiya black is itself a paint, far thicker and more densely pigmented compared to their pre-mixed Panel Line Accent colors. You can buy it if you wish but also buy a larger container of thinner as you will be using much more of it than the paint.

Hey, person here from earlier in the thread. getting a Hy-Gogg and a Raze Kai, as well as an options kit #2 as their 2nd and third kits. I have a stand for Raze Kai, a sprue cutter, some high grit sandpaper, and a set of gundam paint markers coming. I also have a super thin pen that I used on my first kit, as well as a craft knife and a file for rougher stuff. Is there anything else that I should buy for them? I have some citadel acrylic paints if I need to paint anything, but I'd rather use proper ones if they would work better.

Yeah , although if you're planning on doing the panel lines then you'll want to put down a gloss coat first so the paint/ink can flow and be cleaned up easier, trying to clean smudges off matte is a pain in the ass

You don't get good looking damage with a single color of paint, you have to use atleast two colors to create depth in the damage otherwise it looks like you speckled paint on a kit. Highlight with silver around the edges of a darker grey and it would look so much better than pic related.
>>
>>6485619
It always will be until you really get into it. Once you start screwing around you'll really begin understand it and will find yourself deconstructing paint jobs you see online. Start with cheap things you don't care about and move up, that's my advice. Realtalk though be careful with the clear coats, they get foggy real easy if there's too much moisture in the room or god forbid, the airgun lines/compressor tank. Definitely get a moisture filter for the thing. Also remember less is more.

>>6485633
Strongly agree. Even just something simple like painting the interior of the damage with a lighter grey will improve the look easily.

>>
>>6486299

I use vallejo model air on top of it. I've had paint get scratched occasionally but never down to the plastic or in any other way where I would blame the primer.

It's a thousand times better than vallejo primer in that regard, where paint scratching like that almost always went all the way down to the plastic, and created rather significant surface flaws.

>>6486336

So far no issues but I wait like a day until doing so since vallejo model color isn't the most durable paint in the world.

Basically, what I mean by "zero issues" is that it performs just as well as the tamiya spray can primer I used before getting an airbrush in terms of durability/sandability etc.

I'm just starting out, I've read the guide and all that, I just want to double check I'm getting the right stuff and want a reccomendation for a kit.
Stuff I need:
Model kit
Snippers
Craft knife
Top coat (should I use Mr Topcoat or can I use something more available?)
Panel marker
Sandpaper
Plastic cement?
I think I'll leave painting for now.
I'm looking at some 1/144 HG kits, does anyone have any reccomendations?
Sorry if I'm clogging the thread with obvious questions, I'm just hoping for clarification.

You've got your bases pretty well covered there. Topcoat are kind of a personal thing but most things model-oroemted should work "well enough, " Mr. * is just recommended because it's especially good. As for kits, there are recolor those in the guide too, but I started with the Wing Honoo and loved it.

Just got my hands on the old US versions of the HGUC RX-78-2 and the "HG" NT-1 Alex (actually the old 80s kit). Was anyone here around when Gunpla was first sold in the US back in the early 2000s? Do you remember if Perfect Grades were actually sold in stores? All of the TV and print ads that I saw for these models never showed anything above a level 5, so I was surprised to see MGs and PGs listed on the boxes. Pic related.

So I got these two lil bastards in the mail today, and I was wondering what panel line would look good? Black, Grey, or Brown?

They definitely did, at least for 1/100 HGs. The only MG I've seen in this packaging was the GP01. Before BoA released kits with english boxes they imported the original Japanese kits with stickers slapped on the front with English names, so they might've released some MGs or PGs like that. Distribution must have been poor since I've never seen any of these kits in stores at all, in english or otherwise.

The High Resolution Model is probably the fanciest you can get right now. It's also super pricey, at over $100. Personally, I would go for the much cheaper 1/100 NG Barbatos (around $26 on Amazon). It's a very nice kit, has a full internal frame, and is juuuust short of MG quality.

Full Mechanics is what they started calling the 1/100 NG line after a few releases. It's basically like...80% Master Grade quality. They have full internal frames, but not everything may be molded in proper colors, some may rely on stickers more than your typical MG, and they won't have poseable fingers. They're very nice kits though, especially considering most of them are a fair bit cheaper than a MG.
