The the little gator legs dangling off, no heel spurs and (mostly on hasbro molds) his hips can be loose, oh and the cockpit hatch on his back is made of rubber (so are the teeth) if that ails you

Otherwise he's fine, I have the takara one and I painted up another for the purpose of gator aligator-tron and a krok, I have no issues despite imperfections (though the paint on my custom fixed the hips and then polish on my krok, the takara was perfect).

So, what's the best Bayformer leader class Megatron? I want to have one to scale up with next to my ROTF Prime but I'm honestly undecided since none of them appear to be perfect. The 2007 one has an interesting aesthetic and color palette but the bland grey plastic really rubs me the wrong way, the ROTF one has a great paintjob but the proportions are completely fucked and the Last Knight one has an interest design but everyone seems to be talking shit about it lately.

Which of these three would you recommend me, /tfg/?
>>
>>6470597
>gimmick is actually ignorable

I feel like it really is just one or two very vocal anons who hated Titans Return. Especially since a few threads ago when people were listing their top 3 favorite toylines, TR made it in to a majority of them.
>>
>>6470901
2007 is shorter than rotf prime so that won't work, Rotf is taller and I imagine that TLK is also too short.
>>
>>6470901

I'd say either Premium Series movie 1 (better color plastics, more detail, not pink and blue), or ROTF are decent options if you really want a Megatron from the earlier movies.

>>
>>6470930
is there anything you really really want from wave 2 and 3 though?
>>
>>6470631
To be honest. I can't stand electronics. The toy gets compromised because the budget has to go to some shitty sound effect that goes off every time you look at the thing. That is, until the batteries leak acid all over the inside.
>>
>>6470935
Drift maybe. That red dinobot.
>>
>>6470930
>>6470935

Either way though, it's pretty nuts. Look at how far the movie toylines have fallen in the past couple installments. Remember distribution for the ROTF toyline? There were problems with shelfwarmers obviously, but there was also a ton of product, and consistently something new on the shelves every couple weeks. Even if the midwest. That means that not only was there retailer enthusiasm, but product was also moving.
>>
>>6470935
I want Nitro Zeus, Scorn and Cogman. Nitro and Scorn should show up eventually, the voyagers seem to sell well enough and they're in the same wave. However I don't see Cogman hitting regular retail, even if wave 2 deluxes hit shelves and sell the line will die at the lackluster wave 3 and for some reason Cogman is part of Wave 4(by himself?, there's no info on his wave at all). Guess I'll have to get the Takara release of that one, if it happens anyway.
>>
>>6470901
They're all pretty bad. I'd wait for an eventual MPM or go 3rd party if I were you.
>>
>>6470954
>Cogman
I kind of wanted him, but now that the movie is forgotten and the first production pictures showed him cast entirely in that same, shitty gray plastic Hasbro always uses, I think I could pass.

I think the biggest reason I wanted him was for his cool little sword, and that looked like it was cast in bendy rubber.

>>
>>6470948
Age of Extinction toys sold worse than Beast Hunters, and the new head of Transformers knows people care more about nostalgia-based figures than the kiddie or movie lines, so TLK basically got the shaft with bare minimum of figures and raised prices to go towards those lines in the future.

I know this is what people want to avoid scratching, but I'm not paying $200 for ugly, unpainted gray plastic. I'll either go with the 3P versions that aren't clusterfucks or skip it all together.
>>
>>6471044
The sizes vary greatly depending on the figure, for instance Springer stands regular height for a deluxe but his car altmode is damn near deluxe sized. If the new Grimlock is roughly the size of FoC Grimlock, that'd be just right to me, as long as it's not hollow in the back.

I feel like Marvel Megatron is supposed to be silver. Actually, I feel like all Megatrons are supposed to be silver. The MP only ended up gray because the animators don't typically draw the metallic shine detail that Megatron should have.

Seriously, I see tons of people supporting unpainted releases like TR Megatron saying "MEGATRON HAS ALWAYS BEEN GRAY", but... has he? I think the first time I saw him deliberately made gray was MP-36, and it baffled me. Megatron is always shown to be chrome/metallic silver, like 90% of the time.

>>6471052
>They could kick off some accessories and bring it down to $150?
I doubt it. Takara would likely kick off the accessories and keep the price the same, really. Although we could stand to lose some accessories. I hate that the MP figures are getting loaded down with all these extra plastic bits just to replicate one specific moment from a single episode of the cartoon or whatever.
>>
>>6471059
I mean, even the tiny Megatron that comes with Soundwave and MP-01 was silver. Why the fuck did they paint MP-36 gray?
>>
>>6471062
So they can repaint him and sell him again as silver.
>>
Looks like Takara's Trypticon actually will be a bit darker, but is cartoon accuracy enough for people to get it over the Hasbro one?

Also, I think it's safe to assume that the legs will have the same issue.

I always read Megatron as being white in the comics. There's the implication of being silver with the sheen detailing, but if you just look at it, he's white in those panels.

You have to be careful what you ask for. Your interpretation may not be what others see, especially those involved in making the toy.
>>
>>6471059
I believe what takara aimed for with mp36 was a "best of both worlds" approach, hence the sparkles in his grey, its not a straight up flat grey, but it does generally match up with his cartoon appearance, lets face it when they say cartoon accuracy its not "ok his body shines in most places" they try to take the damn palette used on the show, with the sparkles just to make it more...interesting.

Only in comics do they really go crazy with the chrome effect which adds a unique feel, if they do a marvel megatron I hope to god they do something crazy like...slight cell shaded effects, if he ain't metallic then make him stand out for fucks sake.

As for the accessories its just a sign of affection to our childhood, they're really just an excuse for the price, not the actual cause

>>6471062
Back then the aesthetic was at a crossroads, mp10 up until mp magnus the designs had a merger of toy and cartoon aesthetics (surface detail, deco choices and faces), mp inferno and so forth just solidified that takara has gone down to slavish g1 accuracy with an INCREASED level of articulation.

I'm conflicted, I liked the mp datsuns, lambos and mp10's as they generally looked good from all angles and their heads would say "hay I'm a cool robot you might recognize" not "HAY I'M COSPLAYING AS THEY CARTOON YOU GREW UP WITH LOOK AT HOW HIGH MY LEGS REACH"

>>6471068
Look on the tf_pr twitter, your image is dark because of the effects, the last images of trypticon are virtually the same, even the stickers

>>6471072
>white megatron with a black helmet
I'd be fine if its a gloss white but a matte would better suit
>>
>>6471072
>Your interpretation may not be what others see, especially those involved in making the toy.
Apparently, since those involved with making the toy seem to always pick the blandest possible interpretation.

>>6471074
>"best of both worlds"
There's nothing "best" about gray. It makes the leader of the Decepticons look like a total genericon. I don't think anyone has ever looked at a silver Megatron toy and said "I wish he was more bland gray like the animation cels!". I mean, now they do, because people always want this kind of shit retroactively, just like in general nobody really wanted the hyper-cartoon-accuracy of the MP molds we're getting now (really, nobody had an issue with the style of MP-10 through 25), but now that they've had a taste, they claim it's all they ever wanted.

It is the current voyager offerings, CW, TR and even POTP voyagers have compromises for their second altmode/torso mode.

That's not how it works. Accessories are usually so simple engineering/partscount wise they almost add no cost at all. Adding such accessories is just a way to help the buyer justifying the asked price to himself.

No wonder has-tak are collectively pissing people off, we got people who want new shit but don't know what they want and people who refuse to move on from MUH G1 but get pissy when they do new things/remix stuff for existing characters because they can't move on from the 80's, would you be happy if they remained inaccurate bricks and just ran g1 re-runs every year with fancy cgi in-betweens?

I can imagine warden right now asking people like us, WHAT DO YOU FUCKING WANT, WHAT THE LIVING FUCK DO YOU WANT FROM US.

I was like you once anon, hating this "change" to my beloved characters, but then I remembered, these are kids toys, made to be fun, fun to who, certainly not basement dwellers, characters who became their intended headmasters came out find and everyone else wasn't terribly hurt, the play pattern is meant to give more interactivity with the figures.

CW had more reasons to get angry about and that was because of mold diversity and guess what, the deluxes ONCE AGAIN are stuck with combiner pegs thus limiting their potential, but they (for now) learnt their lessasons and TRIED to get things better.

So anon, either go buy some mp's or 3p's, or piss off, don't give overlord warden money, it'll just encourage him and his quest to ruin MUH G1.

So so long sucker and enjoy your kids toys

>I always read Megatron as being white in the comics. There's the implication of being silver with the sheen detailing, but if you just look at it, he's white in those panels.

Color printing was more limited then. He's done in the exact same style as Silver Surfer from that era for example, who is obviously silver. He is meant to basically be shiny metal of some sort.

This is madness. Are people actually decrying the improved transformation engineering on TR? We're going to pretend that Triggerhappy isn't one of the best molds we've gotten in years, and instead write it off as needlessly flashy, just because it validates your shortsighted shit-eating?

I think one of the funniest things about people who are triggered by TR being "partsforming" is that they almost always say that CW was better. But going by that same, broken logic, aren't combiners just the ultimate partsformers?

Making the transformation needlessly do fancy tricks isn't the same as improving the engineering. CW toys were exactly as simple as they needed to be for what the characters were and they didn't need to use partsforming as a crutch.

>We're going to pretend that Triggerhappy isn't one of the best molds we've gotten in years
He's fine but he's also overrated as fuck. He would be better it didn't have to partsform just to transform.

>>6471186
>>6471197
Combiners need to partsform by the definition of what combining even means. They're multiple robots that come together to form a larger robot. Combining without partsforming is impossible. Making a toy robot that doesn't partsform is possible.

Now I know you're going to say
>b-but they're headmasters! headmasters need to partsform!
1. 80% of the characters in this line have no business being headmasters to begin with. So they're still just using headmasters as a partsforming cheat.
2. There are some headmasters where partsforming isn't necessary such as Sixshot. However most of the line doesn't do this.
3. Unlike combiners there's no way of completely ignoring the partsforming aspect.

I didn't really have a problem with this. I think headmastering is an awesome gimmick and makes the alt. modes more fun to play with. I mean, sure it's more fun on the characters that are actually SUPPOSED to be Headmasters, but the ones that aren't like Triggerhappy and Kup are pretty fun. Plus based Takara is making them Targetmasters as well, and a transformable toy robot that has both a gun and a head that turn into little dudes makes me giddy.

Toei did the original show on the cheap (even for them) and deadlines forced them to farm out scenes and even whole episodes to lesser companies. The fast pace meant that we got a lot of unfinished animation. That's what Rhino released on DVD years ago and that's what so many people see online and on bit torrent. It wasn't the finished animation tho. Rhino never released the finished work because they were too lazy to track it down.

AFAIK, the newer DVDs from Shout use the finished animation whenever they had it.

Takara released the show months later and had even more time to fix the animation.

The same thing happened with Armada. Hasbro rushed the production for a weekday Mon thru Fri release schedule and we got unfinished animation and script errors galore where every minicon was called the wrong name because all they had were the early placeholder names. It was a mess.

Repeats aired the finished work, as they were corrected.

They were delivering around 50 episodes within a seven month window both times, so errors happened and a lot just never got fixed.

A weekly schedule probably would have helped a bit, but wouldn't have fixed the issue. Weekly releases for shows like Getter and DragonBall were still filled with animation errors from Toei. It's become part of their reputation.

Boulder has been working on the preproduction writing and animation for a few months now. Hopefully it's not a Toei mess.

Yes, he was one of the animators for G1.

>Was it any good?
Animation-wise? Mixed at best, godawful at worst. But nowhere near the stiffness of Filmation.

Plot-wise?
-Season 1's okay, but has a few stinkers
-Season 2? Hope you like the 87 TMNT series, because there's a lot of stupid episodes that rival that show's plots. Though having David Wise on the writing staff probably didn't help.
-Season 3? Despite the shitty animation, it does try to be serious (or as series as a show about alien robots can be). But there's still some dumb episodes here and there.
-Season 4? Rushed as fuck, and its pacing is probably on par with the most recent Bayformers film within the first episode alone.

So I've monkeyed around with my Defensor guys a bit more and I've concluded that all the individual figures are pretty solid. The vehicle modes for each of them are all stellar, I love the paint and the detail is great. The robot modes are all good-to-okay, except for Hot Spot who seems to suffer from janky leg ratchet joints. He looks good, it's just I have to work to get his legs even sort of symmetrical. It's annoying. His legs have no weight to them either which detracts from both his robot form and the combined form, and my best bet at a dynamic pose seems to be letting his ladder work as a tripod. But he DOES look good.

I have Groove swapped out for Rook, because I like Rook's vehicle mode too much. The combined form of all of them together is cool but the way it holds together is kind of dodgy. Still, I like having them arranged this way, pairing the police as the feet (Defensor's got flat feet, get it?) and healing hands with the medical arms. It's a really nice set, but if I'm being honest, they'll probably spend more time as vehicles than anything just because they look so much better that way.

Dinobots in some fiction are depicted as massive compared to regular transformers, so people wanted them larger than deluxe.

Eh, I don't mind a backpack. I love MP Hot Rod, and he has a pretty big one, although Roddy also has a much more graceful transformation than Streaker, it looks like.

Still, this is what it takes to get muh cartoon accuracy; a fiddly fucking mess that takes 45 minutes to transform, scratches itself to pieces, looks ugly from the back and has a massive backpack, but HEY! Cartoon accurate in BOTH MODES, Woooooo!

No. We had the reissues, for one, starting in 2000. Car robots had most of the character's names changed to be more G1, like Fire Convoy being Optimus, Wildride as X-Brawn, Mach alert as Prowl, etc. Armada was definitely taking influence from G1. Energon had a ton of G1 homages. to say nothing of the MP line and Alternators.

Kek, are you unironically relying on cartoon scale for comparison? They were massive in some episodes and regular-sized bots in others, even in the 1986 movie they're portrayed as no taller than Hot Rod and Kup.

>Turning them into another 1 voyager/4 deluxe combiner team is fucking boring and takes away what was cool about them to begin with
Oh, sure, the cool thing about the DINObots is the fact that they transformed into robots that were often slightly larger than the average Autobot. No, it isn't the fact that they were freaking dinosaurs or anything, that was just contingent.

The robot mode for him does still look ridiculously good, though. My only honest complaint with it is that the hip joints are slightly fiddly with how they extend downwards. And the hands, the hands suck worse tham MPM3's.

But yeah no everything's all there with him, he's big, he's solid, everything fits together really nicely (I've heard complaints about the chest parts being loose but mine feels like he could survive tumbling down stairs without coming apart), he's got all the articulation I want and he stands really well. It's just the truck mode is just mindbogglingly bad.

So I think we can all agree that the cartoon accuracy retardation has hit the ceiling with Megatron and Sunstreaker here. Now Megatron's sales are going to be high regardless because people have been waiting for him for over a decade, and he's a poster child of the franchise. All kinds of collectors shelled out for him because he's a must-have character. However, I wonder if the polarizing new design choices and inflated price point are going to put people off of Sunstreaker. I'd be curious to see the actual sales figures of these things since the aesthetic has changed so much.

The point is that the only people who care are autists. And realistically speaking, the only bots that should be huge based on their alt mode are Grimlock and Sludge. Slag and Snarl should be about deluxe size and Swoop should be even smaller.

The thing is that if you've come this far into being a transformers fan and you're still fussing about scale, there's no hope for you. Especially when it's obvious they're futzing with the scale for the specific reason of making them into a combiner, which is kind of cool, really.

Bitch I'm fucking clamouring for an Omega Supreme out of Sky Shadow. If the toy is good I don't care.

YOOOO same here.

I mean, I don't know that, but I know I had him and he was my favorite, such that he was the one I remembered best from the cartoon.

Amiami put up preorders for MPM4

It instantly sold out but they were up at one point apparently.

If it was a good toy, I wouldn't give a fuck what size it was. And you say you don't care about scale, but you do care about characters being proper size in relation to others... that's scale.

All of my favorite Megatrons are legends scale, and they're great toys. It would be stupid to write them off just because "hurrrr a big character should be big"

It was a fake one. The second I bought years later was Oil Slick

I think Grandus would make a great titan class figure since the original figure was so bad nobody would really care what they did as long as it looked passably like Grandus.

No, someone just put a dress on a Megatron figure.

No, it's just your opinion. And it's wrong.

Not to mention the original Universe line, Titanium, and then Classics starting in 2006 (which was less than ten years after Beast Wars started), as well as Takara's Encore and TF Collection lines.

Yeah, there was plenty of G1 pandering in those years.

I've got the SonoKong release (Korean, official, pretty much identical to Takara's) and the paint holds up quite well. The moulds are clearly a bit dated but they're still fun to play around with.

The problem I've had is major yellowing, particularly on Midnight Express (but the other two have got it as well), and mine has just been sitting in its box since I moved about five years ago (but I got him out recently to display him), in a fairly dry room, so that's disappointing.

>but nothing fits or lines up right
What do you think happened in the factory, anon? This is why it's a problem. The broken mould caused this. What else do you think it would have caused? This is the main problem, so...

Only thing good about 2007 Leader Megatron is his cannon if you take the spring out. Other than that he's practically a statue, his arm panels are dumb and always drop down, his alt mode looks like ass, his wings are hideous when folded in, the mace idea is godawful and his colours are shit.

2/10 I'm embarrassed to have bought him
