For those unfamiliar, "Plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model." If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.

Reposting in case the anon asking about the MG WD GM Sniper II doesn't see

Hey anon, it's me anon.

Bad news. Looks like ALL of the weapons are reused from the old GM Sniper kit which comes with all of the weapons. Yes, the big sniper rifle too, though maybe the modified to remove the holes for the hose, not sure didn't look closely enough. As far as I could tell all of the weapons it shares with the aforementioned kits is basically 2-body halves molded all in gray, no parts separation for the white parts, what you'd expect from ancient MG kits.

If you're a painter you might be better off just buying the GM Sniper II and the old GM Sniper and paint the Sniper II since it'll probably be similar in cost but you get the GM Sniper. Mine are in storage as part of the backlog so we'll see.
>>
So I'll be painting for the first time on my group build kit. I'm going to just do a basic build and paintjob of Shining Gundam since I wanted to build that kit anyway. I think I'm going to stick to the paint job from the show but give it a more metallic look. What paints would be good for this? I don't have a compressor so I'm just going to be using rattle cans. I use Tamyia to topcoat so I'm used to that.

Another thing, will I need to gloss coat after painting in order to panel line and detail? Then apply the matte topcoat? Sorry, I'm new and painting is scary to me.

As someone completly new to Gunpla and model kits in general, is there a good HG model for begginers that has swords or similar as weapons? I mostly want to try and build one because I want to buy a FAG later, but because I don't have any experience, I don't want to fuck up by directly buying one. Checked the guide and all the recommended ones for begginers have guns. Not picky, just personal preference, gonna get a normal one if there isn't.

Anon here, appreciation and thanks for checking that anon!

To tell you the truth, fine with that; and almost happy Bandai kept these weapons the same. The old sniper rifle gives a pretty decent amount of space for a basic LED for the scope, if a person felt like modding a bit. though might not be worthwhile since light-piping the head may be a much harder challenge in comparison the simpler MG GM(G).

Got curious when my middleman let me know about the one I ordered(... and forgot about at some point), before going on a trip and adding it to my small pile.
>>

Does anyone know what kit this is (beyond the box details)/where I can get it? I can't find any information about this specific one anywhere. I only have this image to go off of. I'm guessing it's a limited ed. garage kit perhaps.

Hey guys, just got a tip from an old modeling pro regarding the best, cheapest primer he's ever found. If you've got any friends in the military, have them go grab you a can of the krylon camo spray paint from the base exchange. It was made to adhere to literally anything, and takes paint very well according to him.

tbhfam though, I've bought some gunpla from there that were complete but missing the manual, luckily dalong exists.

If you can win it for cheap as fuck, then it'd still be worth it. Might even be good recasting / scratch building practice.

>>6265353
Yeah, it always seems like a big gamble. I usually try to stick to a certain price and don't above that. I think this one closed out for ¥3500 or something crazy (for a mines good).

I've started comparing their listed weight to the product's known weight but even that can be pretty iffy.

Testor's enamel thinner has iso alcohol in it for some retarded reason, it can destroy anything lacquer or acrylic based.

That's why testor's belongs in the trash tbqh.

Fug. Would a different thinner help the issue? Ended up buying a couple different vallejo acrylics to paint with in the meantime but I'd like the durability of enamel. Plus I have a fair amount of enamels and would kinda like to actually use them.

So anyone else working on anything, and do you have something going in the background while you build? About to start my first kit since attempting my hobby moratorium(not entirely successful since I kept a few orders technically). Kit's the regular MG GM Sniper II, gonna be a basic snap fit as I have no tools/supplies anymore; with an I hope okay war doc called "Five Came Back" playing during it(just noticed Burns' 'The War' was switched out by Netflix Canada...)
Curious how far along I've gotten when the show ends, after the bit away from this hobby hahaha!

>>6265097
Sorry for prying, but any reason you haven't gotten one yet?

Been telling myself, I'm waiting for P-Bandai exclusives of either Uma Lightning's abomination of a MS-14B Gelgoog; or Johnny Ridden's High Mobility Type(though granted I know you get everything necessary in that 2.0 Gelgoog Cannon released sometime ago) before I go for the MG 2.0 again.

Yet just seeing your post make me feel a bit bad for the Gelgoog, that doesn't seem to get a lot of love these days... Damn you Gelgoog Guy, I think you might've just made me rationalize my budding backlog hahaha!
>>

They fit together, but tight as fuck.

They're more like halfhands.
iirc it's pn-120, they're not up to par but not as expensive
>>
Bought a bunch of supplies. A couple questions:
What kind of grit sandpaper do you use for removing nubs? I bought 400 and 800, I have some even finer left over. I even saw that they had 120 but I figured that would be too rough.

I also went and bought a bunch of small files since they seemed useful, but those of you who use them, do you just go nippers->file->sanding or do you still use a knife?

Also bought a soldering iron (15W), seemed to get decent results on some junk parts making some tiny blaster/beam "craters" but is there any good guide out there for doing battle damage with it?
>>
>>6266998
I blame the holes for the face vents, Bandai trying to force the REAL in Real grade by sacrificing the proportions of the face just to include those features.

The RG Gold Frame Amatsu Mina have the engraved lines for the vents and it turned out good.

Its from the hgbc gunpla battle arms and I think skull arms sets. He also trimmed the piece inside the bakpack itself back and most likely widened the hole a bit as well to make it able to peg in. I did a similar mod on mine.

So turns out that a local store here carries Tamiya TS sprays and Model Master. I'm thinking of spray painting my models for the first time so it seems like I'd be in okay shape with at least the Tamiya right?

The Tamiya TS cans are about $12-13 Canadian each. Am I overpaying? It's convenient that they're here and they're my local store but I don't want to be gouged.

Also, I've heard mixed stuff about using Testors Dullcote and or Krylon Matte as a finish. How are the Tamiya top coats? I saw that they had some of those. I plan on using some acrylic vallejo paints I have to paint some details on top of the Tamiya TS sprays, so I want to make sure they're compatible with the top coat.

Sorry for all the questions! I'm a little wary of ruining my robits. I'm a super slow builder
>>
>>6267147
Is that in order so the Super Clear is the lacquer and the Hobby is the a acrylic?

>>6267273
I currently end up using 360 (it's too rough, get 500 or so) 1000 and 2000 grit. I have 1500 as well but it sees little use.

Cool gray copic multiliner or a mechanical pencil for panel lining?
>>
>>6267646
The best choice would be to use neither and learn how to do a panel wash, but if you really must use a budget option then go for the multiliner.

Mechanical pencil rubs off pretty easily and is pretty faint. It is the most budget of budget options for a good reason.
>>
>>6267412
>The Tamiya TS cans are about $12-13 Canadian each.

That's about MSRP, you're fine.

>How are the Tamiya top coats?

Anything Tamiya is fine, they're just typically a little overpriced for what you actually get.

>I plan on using some acrylic vallejo paints I have to paint some details on top of the Tamiya TS sprays, so I want to make sure they're compatible with the top coat.

Last I checked, Tamiya's acrylic is actually sorta lacquer based but you shouldn't worry about spraying acrylic on lacquer.

If you've got Amazon Prime, it may be cheaper to get the kit there rather than from a Japanese seller. Plamo boxes tend to be pretty big, which drives the shipping up, and Amazon often has a pretty decent selection of recent kits for solid prices once you take shipping into account.
>>
>>6265658
If you haven't got the respirator yet, I'd just get one of the bundles with the filters and respirator. It may be a dollar or three more than buying the components separately, but you at least know that you'll get something that fits without having to pore through the clusterfuck of charts and model numbers.

I'm waiting for my first 2 kits to arrive, so I might try panel washing once I get the basics, but I need some beginner tools first. Also, what about pour type gundam markers?
>>
>>6267699
Pour type gundam markers are finnicky, and honestly you're better off in the long run just actually learning how to panel wash. It's seriously not hard, and frees you to use whatever color you want.

Again, maybe it changed in the past month since my last purchase.

So TS-80 should be fine as a topcoat over details painted in Acrylic paints?

Just wanted to double check. My current plan is.
1. Base coats in Tamiya TS
2. Details painted using Vallejo acrylic paints
3. Stickers
3. Topcoat with Tamiya TS-80

>>
I know this is a gunpla thread but where Gundam action figures/toys ever good?
>>
>>6269044
You will have a very hard time finding tutorials to really help you get what you are looking for within the gunpla hobby. Or even Scale models in general. Reason why is shading and highlighting is not absolutely a necessity for most of the kit because the models are large enough they get a lot of their own natural shading. Some subtle usage of it will make gunpla a lot more such as discussed in >>6269046, he even outright says he does not often use preshading, but for the most part strong shading techniques are not really used heavily outside of weathering.

Instead I suggest you look at other hobbies and their techniques as well. Specifically wargamming like Warhammer. Due to the size of the minis and in the case of stuff like warhammer the exagerated proportions add greatly to this need, shading and highlighting becomes a highly valued skill.

In fact I suggest everyone look at the other hobbies that involve painting models of some kind. It is quite fascinating how each community has different methods and reasons for needing those methods. Personally I need to start looking into the BJD community now that FAGs and MDs are becoming popular in hopes of any of their face related techniques being viable.
>>
>>6269058
You will get more response over at the Robot Damashi general. But I will give you my personal opinion as someone who prefers the model kits.

You have a couple big lines to go to for gundam figures, Mobile Suits In Action(MSIA), Robot Damashii, and a few smaller lines like HCM, Fix Figuration and I guess we could include Assault Kingdom.

MSIA was the old action figure line and is HUGE. It was going until the time of Seed and almost everything had an MSIA, heck some things like the Xamel only ever had an MSIA. Their details were basic, but they were durable, did not break easily at all, very good articulation both for their time of release and their price point, and the price was very good. As the HG line started to build up steam and saw lot's of improvements, they would directly compete with the MSIA, color separation improvements made the advantages of the prepainted action figures more and more moot, the kits began getting better articulation and engineering and so on. Nothing really special about them these days, just a nostalgic toy of the early 2000s when the gundam craze was in full swing in america. but like I said, everything before seed was a MSIA in most cases.

Robot Damashii is the current line and I don't have too much experience with them other then that they are very nice. They are rising in prices like every action figurte, so that sucks but they were always a collector line versus the super cheapy MSIA. I am personally eyeing the A.N.I.M.E. line, lots of accessories and posability.

HCM Pro I have only heard about, I think they were a little more posable and smaller scale versions of MSIA. Fix Figuration was essentially the MG of MSIA. they largely had the same articulation, sometimes more limited due to the harder plastic they used, but the paint applications and sculpt was amazing. A collector line, that focused a lot of alternate variations of various suit designs.
>>
>>6269073
Assault Kingdom is a recently retired line of Trading Figures. I wasn't sure about including them since they are a 'blind box' trading figure line, except you know what figure you get in the box. But they have AMAZING articulation for their tiny size, comparable to, and in a few areas(like feet) better then, the articulation of the MSIA line. These are great little guys to tinker with on your desk and you should be able to find a few of the later lines for a decent price. Unfortunately they been rising in price.

Universal Unit has replaced them and is essentially the same line except they are now model kits you must assemble which limits the articulation in some cases due to using hard gunpla plastic.

I still prefer building my own kits, as that is fun in and of itself, but I won't deny that Robot Damashii does have very good articulation. I just can't help but think "A damashii or an MG, hmmm... Nah I think I will just get this HMM Zoids while the price is still good, they always reprint Gunpla, but Zoids rarely do." So that was my rant on the matter.
>>
>>6269044
The one in your pic is not the cell shaded look. Its shading/highlighting with is used to add false depth to the kit. There are plenty of tutorials on how to do those techniques.
>>
>>6269077
>A damashii or an MG, hmmm... Nah I think I will just get this HMM Zoids while the price is still good, they always reprint Gunpla, but Zoids rarely do
Do Bandai reissue/reprint/restock their non-gunpla plamo lines as often as gunpla lines?
Like say R3, Eva plamos or their sentai minipla?

Also should I get R3 Walker Galia or Super Minipla Walker Galia?
>>
>>6269092
Minipla is by the Bandai Candy toys division, they are smaller in scale compared to Bandai Hobby so they do not have a regular reissue cycle like them. (The various bandai divisions don't share...)

They do reissue whole complete assortments in the last wave of a sentai series though. Plus all the repeats/fillers in-between to fill up the assortment, like say for the movie waves.

There's always exceptions, Mugenbine candy toys got a reissue lately due to popular demand.

>>
>>6269108

The better the filter, the more dust it traps, the less air it lets through, the slower your fan sucks out the poisonous fumes, the longer your fan lasts, the sooner you die.

The worse the filter, the less dust it traps, the more air it lets through, the faster your fan sucks out the poisonous fumes, the sooner your fan dies from all that dust, the longer you live.

Choose wisely.

As I understand it, this type of paint job requires a the ability to draw. If you're a colorist/shader/illustrator you might be able to pull this off.

Because it's cheaper.

That's literally the entire reason people make do-it-yourself spray booths, because it's cheaper.

Decided to make my first custom, I have an idea in my head about a berserker like thing with lot of bone shapes.

Does anyone know any obtainable model (even if its not gundam) or toy with lot of bone shaped parts that I could use? I'm particulary thingking into some sort of dorsal spine for the back and a tail whip.

Going to use a 1/100 as base

you could easily do the edging with masking, but getting a more authentic looking 'cell shade' look will require free hand and allowing yourself to not make the lines 100% perfect. The tiny imperfections sell the look.

Like >>6270302 says having a good understanding of art and color theory will be extremely important in knowing what colors the shaded areas should be, where to place them, etc. But as I said earlier, a very good place to start will be taking some time to check out War Gaming painting. Warhammer and other similar 'heroic scale' lines allow more room for exageratted shading and painting that can translate to cell shaded look so those would be good to look at.

Uhh, so i found a bunch of stuff on ebay, including some ibo kits.

Hey does anyone have a good list of all the limited edition kits out there? I'm kind of an obsessive collector, so a definitive list would be useful. I've got most of the ibo p-bandai kits already, and all of the regular ibo kits. All that's left really is stuff like the 711 and transparent kits.

I've seen a number of people recommend GundamKitsCollection, but there's also other alternatives if you don't mind non-English.

>TagHobby
Chinese aggregator. Also includes a lot of general toy/hobby/anime announcements, but you can filter those out if you read Chinese/stumble around the site categories. Gets its own scans of stuff sometimes.
>Dengeki Hobby
Japanese. Like TagHobby it also announces news for things other than plastic robutts if you don't filter it out. Also has its own custom galleries, and their own scans of stuff.
>GToys
Japanese strictly-Gunpla aggregator. Site design is pretty ugly, with ads that go through uBlock Origin, but being a Japanese aggregator it also has topics that other sites don't pick up, and links to twitter/blogsites when they need to cite something from them. I don't really use it so I honestly can't say much about it.
>Bandai-Hobby.net
Bandai Hobby's Japanese site. You only get what they want to officially put up there, but since it's the official site you know that the source is credible.
>bandaihobby.hatenablog.com
Think Bandai's version of GSC's Kahotan blog, but instead of Nendos and stuff you get Bandai's plastic models. I honestly don't know why more sites don't repost its news; they tease built versions and runner pics of kits that're coming out in the future. Pic related.
>>>/toy/Gunpla
>>>/m/Gunpla
If it's neat news then someone's going to be talking about it. You'll miss a bunch of stuff and it won't always be the freshest news, but you can certainly get by just lurking the Gunpla Generals. Especially if you just want to know which of your favorite suits is getting a P-Bandai exclusive release.

It also removes plastic and damages the sculpt if you aren't careful. Speaking from experience, stick to alcohol.
>>
>>6271266
I'm using 2000 grit and a good amount of caution; it doesn't take off much plastic at all. I'm aware of the downsides, but until I get some swabs less terrible than the Q-tips(TM) I've got this is probably going to be my go-to. I do plan on getting something actually hobby oriented when I have the chance to try the alcohol approach again, though.

Just a question: when I was building 40k miniatures, the owner of the shop I went to emphasized the importance of a black undercoat for the models, then painting manually with Bolt Grey to get a good metallic result.
Now I'm getting into military airplane models, and most do not mention anything about an undercoat and instruct to apply the final color directly. Is this how it should be, or?
>>
>>6271384
You often do a gloss black base coat for glossy metallics, but its not as important for flat or dull metallics.

First painting attempt, what do you think? I used the Gusion because I don't care about it too much and I thought that its colour would be a good way for sperimentation.
I used acrylics. First a very light silver base coat, then a more decise bronze layer and gold as the last in order to get a metallic colour more similar to the one in the anime.
Some dirty spots are there on purpose, I don't want it to look too clean so I left them instead of correct.
Would a light weathering on the edge give a more badass look?
Also the photo may not be the best, but using the flash would give a poorer representation because it would reflect the light and accentuate the spots painted less well
