For those unfamiliar, "Plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model." If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.

***Non-Gundam Group Build***

So this is pretty straightforward, build something that isn't Gundam. I literally do not care what it is, if it's not Gundam it counts (and just to get this out of the way, Bandai is fine). I do not require full paint jobs this time either, as I know the vast majority of people here build Bandai and that's it.

This is also not a prize build, but a regular group build.

Wew lad, do what that another anon said and go butcher a few cheap HG kits. HMM Zoids are incredibly detailed and Koto kits can be a little finicky as well. They take a while to put together. Get your basic skills in order before you start them, no reason to fuck up such expensive kits.

Don't pop your cherry on those. A hobby store or even Amazon will have some throwaway kits to kit your teeth on.
>>

Shit plastic quality compared to Bandai. Retarded joint engineering on some parts. Sharp points, so be careful. Not recommended for constant re-posing. Some bits require cement.

If you have to ask what to expect, youre not ready.

>>
>>6209811
what everyone else said, Kotobukiya is definitely not beginner kits and their price point really makes it a shame to screw around with them and mess up stuff.

For the most part model kits are simple follow the instruction type affairs, just snap them together, regardless of if they are a higher grades within the Gundam area. Kotobukiya on the other hand get crazy with some parts requiring you to able to multi task holding several tiny parts steady while sandwiching them between two bigger pieces. On top of that the Liger Zero CAS kits are notorious for the armor bits popping off so easily it practically requires gluing to keep some of those parts from flying off, and gluing kits can get messy for a first timer.

I was just diagnosed with Parkinsons.
The doctor tells me I have to give up doing things that require precise work and handling sharp objects all-together because my hands start shaking.

Just wanted to tell you guys it's been a fun few years I've had building Gundam kits with you. It's one of the few things I got so much enjoyment out of, especially in the /m/ and /toy/ threads.

Later guys.

As much as I'm having fun with the HG Lupus, getting kind of annoyed how the underarm cannons get in the way for holding weapons.

Does the 1/100 have similar issues?
>>
>>6209811

How big are these things? I kitbashed a Liger to act as a mobile weapons platform for one of my FAGs but he's only about half her size. I'd love to get one large enough for her to ride.

The 1/72 ligers are certainly big enough for a FA girl to ride. Check Dalong and you should get a clue.

HG's guns can swivel too, but it personally looks weird to me to have them at an off angle. It's workable though.

Thanks. Everything is handpainted with Tamiya acrylics except for the red and frame. Those were cans.

Piping was Tamiya Gold Leaf. I masked parts of the chest so I'd spray just the center piece. This was originally supposed to be a Nu Gundam color scheme but it kind of just went somewhere on its own.

Still got touching up to do, but I gotta wait between each session.

Not yet, I'm almost thirty kits in and I am still learning new techniques with each kit. I'm a slow learner. Love the Spiegel, but if I go for another set of a single Gundam, it will be the Master SD/HG/MG.

I'm on the Xbone, but I play my 360 more than anything else these days. Mostly just curious to see what people still play on it, considering quite a few games have decent online communities still.

I hear you. I don't really play my 360 online anymore. I just have a huge library of games left over on it, so I have something to do when my Internet is down or I feel like reminiscing.

>fine hair brush
how does one shop for that. all i see are hair brushes
>>
>>6212607
You don't. You're being bamboozled. The size of the hair won't really help because the root problem is that the paint is disrupted by a physical object and will leave marks unless it's perfectly leveling (it isn't).

Handbrushing will never match airbrushing, it's why airbrushing exists.
>>
>>6212607
Go to a decent art store, not just a standard Hobby shop. Almost ALL real art stores carry a variety of brushes for different purposes, including Coarse AND Fine hair brushes

Sable hair or Mink hair brushes are considered Fine Hair, versus Ox or Horse hair brushes, which are Coarse
>>
>>6212612
Youre right, a hand brush cant compare to an airbrush. Neither can the cost. However, anyone skilled at any concept of layering can still achieve a good look with a hand brushed model if they go slowly.

>>6213267
ZZ gundam kits never have tons of inner frame, even on the original mg. Too much needs on it transforms by collapsing on itself or swingout out or flipping around.

That said the jelly blob is just a quick printed statue of the 3d model and doesn't fully reflect the final kit.

I won't lie, it's pretty rough. But being constructive, you can always sand down whatever that is and cut an identical piece of plaplate and glue it onto that for a more uniform look. I'm not sure if it's the paint being gloppy or if the piece itself is uneven. Some sanding would help out a lot, either way.

I'd say go back to the drawing board or perhaps find a custom shoulder piece like the cloth on the Exia Repair, or maybe a cannon from something else.
>>
>>6213270
1.
Just lose the right arm and make it a damaged suit.
>>
>>6213277
It's the closest to plaplate I have, it's just a bit nipped from the tree. I feel so disgusted with myself for losing the piece, I'm ready to just scrap the kit and buy a new one that I hopefully won't fuck up.
>>
>>6213283
If the piece is identical to the other side, you can do a simple recast.

I know there is a proper comparison of some variety of Liger being compared with it's motorized counterpart but it is very hard to image search for as most size comparisons were part of a much bigger review. But in general, every comparison I seen shows the HMM is always a bit bigger then the old version. Not big enough to make a need for being labeled a diffrerent scale but still worth noting. So a slightly bigger Liger then the one in that pic next to the FAG? Yeah definitely no problems with being big enough to ride.

I personally do not have any motorized kits that have an HMM counterpart and probably never will (Gordos's details suggest a form that would be very hard to make stable joints in HMM form), but a very interesting thing I noticed is that while the HMM Zoids are bigger, the pilots are not! In fact the old pilots are certainly beefier then the new ones. Probably due to the fact the old pilots are single chunks of plastic versus the new ones being in parts.

>>6210815
Do you mean the FAG joints? Pretty sure I have seen either a FAG or Shinki riding a zoid of something similar in the past. But as I do not yet have a FAG myself yet, do not know for sure.

>>6211492
see proper response would be 'Hey that zeek scum realized how inferior a zaku really is and dumped his garbage for superior feddie GM. He may be scum but that Zeek has god tier taste."

>>6211744
as the others said, Fox is definitely great. IIRC it was among the last new, and not a variant, HMM kits from the fist wave. This means it has some very good engineering compared to some of the others. One small issue to point out that appears to be with most if not all fox builds is that the snout splits apart a bit when you open the cockpit so that might require some gluing if you open and close the cockpit a lot. The cockpit holds the halves together just fine on it's own.

But I will add trying to get one of the tortoises. Totally worth it.

Would fine grit sandpaper polish scratched plastic up so it's looking about the same as unscratched and unpolished?

Asking for a friend.
>>
>>6213530
Depends on how fine the grit is. From what I've found, if it says something dumb and unhelpful like "fine grit" it's usually around the 500 grit mark or so, which is still pretty damn rough. Getting back to that bare plastic finish will take something like 2500 grit.
>>
>>6213530
Depends on what exactly you're trying to do. For the most part, filing away at the area with very fine sandpaper will get everything flat and smooth, but the plastic will still look a bit discolored. Painting obviously fixes this, and matte topcoats often reduce it. If it's a clear part, sand down the scratches and put some Future on that shit; works like magic.
>>
>>6213386
No problem, wasn't too hard to do in all honesty. Least I now know how to mock up a few line arts for kits that don't have any if I need them.
>>
>>6213094
>I want to add the beefy Rex arms for the Gusion Rebake FC's backpack arms.
That will probably be difficult because FC's backpack attaches arms via different connectors than the Gundam frame arms so it will need to be modded for pretty much anything other than the arms it comes with. Which is weird because Rebake's can put on arms from other Gundams natively.

this image shows what the kit looked like just before being top coated and afterwards. No extra sanding/smoothing/buffing was performed so that sanded down area is still there after the top coat. You just can't see it due to how light is being refracted through the coat. You can however still see a small bit of the nub mark, so that can show you the limitations this technique does have.

If you have access to a hardware store or whatever, go find some even higher grit sandpaper.

I use sandpaper all the way down to 2000. Once the part is smooth, if I want it shiny again, I polish it with a piece of paper.

Also, I saw someone suggest melamine sponge (magic eraser), which is basically fine grit sandpaper, and it works.

What's the best MG in terms of final kit being fun to pose and hassle free to build?

I was thinking of starting with the MG Deathscythe-Hell but my history with dark plastic pieces isn't that well when removing nubs. I really liked the HGUC GM 2 that came out recently, it feels really solid to pose and has a nice heft in my hands. So maybe a MG federation kit would be nice.

for what? panel lining? I don't think sharpie comes in a nearly fine enough tip to be really appropriate for that. Also my experience with testing sharpie on gunpla is the ink really doesn't look really good. Fades out in areas so it is not a solid looking line at all. Except the metallics for some reason, some folk on here showed some rather good looking detailing with those.

Now for non gundam marker panel lining, I suggest the Sakura micro pens. Try and find the smallest they got, I think a .25? I can't fully remember.
>>
>>6214954
I kind of wonder if the modelers Bandai employs for the display models use the same stuff we do or if they get their own Bandai-approved tools and paints and stuff.
>>
Guys, what is the best way to darken the lines/cracks within a plastic model. I have seen this done many times and it made the model. But I also have seen models destroyed by it. In the last case it looked like people took a fineliner and just got their way with it.
So what is the best way to make it look crisp?
>>
>>6214957
About as vanilla as one can get but all the newer rx-78-2 kits are more fun to pose than a hassle to build.(even the OYW kit is still good on articulation by today's standards)
>>
>>6215489
The official bandai modeler is kawaguchi. He has a whole series of videos on building gunpla including some weathering and airbrushing.

For the stuff you see at shows its most likely qyickly made by one of the booth or con organizers or else is quickly set up and painted at the factory then shipped (If you look cloesly a lot of the paint apps tend to be sloppy).

For the stuff in store displays they are typically put together by the store workers.
>>
>>6215543
What you're talking about is panel lining.

Many would argue that the best way is by doing a panel wash, but that can damage unpainted plastic.
Easier way is to just use a fine tipped marker. Tips for that should be in the guide IIRC.

>>6215488
You want to look for 005 size
>>

>>
>>6215618
>modern modelers are so frugal that they're using cheap industrial chemicals that destroy the models they're building
What are you using for washes? That shit can literally be just water and paint.
>>
>>6215747
Washes for scale models are generally done with oil-based paints. Panel washes specifically tend to be done with enamels. Enamel paint has to be thinned with mineral spirits (although in this case turpenoid-based lighter fluid can be used instead) which can damage the plastic
>>
>>6215747
>>6215747
Frugal? I guess you can save some money on enamel over the long run but a Sakura Pigma micron pen will last a long time too.

Panel washes are about capillary action. Enamel has the best flow, followed by water based acrylic.

It's for acrylic paint.
If it won't destroy the medium, then it'd very safe on all plastics.
>>
>>6214961
Testors works technically, but it won't be pretty. The texture and degree of matte-ness actually DOES scale with price--you cheap out, your kits will look cheap. If you want pure silky flatness, it's Tamiya or Mr. Super Clear.

If you're just fucking around and wanna try topcoating on some cheapo HGs you snapped together, sure, why not go with Testors. If you put some effort into a model and want it to look really nice, save your money for a bit and splurge for one of the brands I mentioned. You WILL see a big difference.

This is by design.

Tomytec makes decals that can be applied over flat coat and they won't silver but you need to apply them in 2 steps: apply as normal waterslides, wait 24hr then peel the top layer without scratching paint or peeling the whole thing off.

The 2nd step is tricky and takes some practice.
>>
>>6216081
While I agree that the other brands you mention give a much nicer looking finish, it's not like Testor's is complete shit; you can get decent results using Testor's, just not as nice as Tamiya and Mr. Hobby
>>
>>6211307
Wow. Fucking hell, I thought Ideon was pretty complex but this is on a whole 'nother level. It pains me that the plastic quality on Super Minipla is kinda shit, because the sculpting and engineering is surprisingly legit.

Granted, it does look somewhat fiddly, and I imagine posing it might become frustrating due to all the moving parts and things that can fall off, but I am truly impressed that they pulled off pretty much all the transforming/combining gimmicks in such a small package.
>>
>>6216299
90% of Gunpla's engineering is plastic and mold design (to optimize plastic quality during cooling and ejection). For what is basically a bunch of polystyrene and ABS sheets Gunpla are incredibly durable.

>>6216318

>>
>>6216332
I did. I'm saying the real engineering that goes into a toy is the plastic composition, mold optimization, and actual injection molding process, so really gunpla's engineering is head over heels better than Bandai Shokugan's. The actual mechanism is something any 3D designer could come up with in a month or two on their own, especially since the show and SoC gives them a pretty good reference for how things should work.
>>

Any recommendation on a good Zoids kit? I've been into Gunpla for the better part of a decade and know what to look for in the Gunpla world just not in Zoids. I was wondering if any of you guys had any experience mixing pearl ex pigments with clear like future
>>
I bought a bottle of future pledge and tested handbrushing it onto a heat hawk. After a day of drying, I've noticed that it didn't dry evenly. On the wide open surface it seems to have clumped up in certain spots and it looks as though it was still wet, but it isn't. It dried up looking like that... Is this not the amazing self-leveling coat I've read about?
>>
>>6216744

>>6216749

This. Looks like just in the picture too. The reviews all say that this is the same Future Pledge that's just been re-branded. One of the reviewers even says he called the company itself to make sure.
>>
>>6216744
Effects of gravity anon. Pledge, like ink washes, it is a good idea to hang them on something so gravity can pull the excess down
>>
>>6216783
I seriously doubt it has anything to do with gravity. Nobody hangs their painted figures so that the excess paint drips off

The more I look at this piece, the more it looks like it might have dried too fast. It looks like when you're painting and the edge of the surface are dry, but the paint accumulated in the center of the surface before it could level out

If latter then >>6217139
if former, you are going to need pic related.
>>
>>6216803
At least from my experience with Pledge, gravity often does make it gather towards the bottom of a piece - there's still a coating over the whole part, but if you don't wick away the excess Pledge that gathers at the bottom, the coat will be a little uneven. Depending on the nature of the piece, I've found that the best way to let it cure for an even coat is to suspend it at an angle so all the Future is being pulled down towards one end, so that you can just touch a bit of paper towel to the gathered still-wet Pledge at the bottom, suck up the excess, and it'll cure to an even coat.
>>
>>6217139

I always feel uneasy whenever I dust a kit with a bunch of stickers on it, like the brush is gonna mess with them or something. But it never does.
