For those unfamiliar, "Plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model." If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.

Tomytec decals are never easy.

These particular ones need to be cut out of the sheet, you need to let them float on the surface on the water paper side down (not submerged) and if you bend them they shatter into little pieces like glass. Fun times.

if youre planning to prep & paint it, original Tomy Zoids are a lot of work due to having MUCH harder plastic than koto zoids or the small tomytec MSS zoids, expect to spend a long time sanding & deseaming. Some parts on Tomy zoids also use a quite rubbery material that doesnt take paint very well, not sure if the one your pic has any of the rubbery stuff or not but i have the Bio Tryranno (pic related) from the same series and that does.

>>

Gray >>> white for surface prep, white is good for really bright colors though

Vinyl tracks and PVC in general do NOT like this primer.
>>
>>6218824
>Also, rubbers? How rubbery are we talking?

theres a few type of rubber materials in tomy zoids, the first is the small rubber grommet things that hold large assemblies together, these are on pretty much every tomy zoid & despite feeling very rubbery, actually take paint o.k and are fairly durable.

The second type is what I can only guess is a type of PVC tomy uses. This is usually any sharp spike, blade or claw, it flexes & bends like crazy and is absolutely impossible to sand or deseam. I'm guessing they use this stuff to pass toy safety standards model kits dont need to adhere to.

the third type is a usually on metallic pieces, but is harder and can be sanded to some degree, but paint & primer dont seem to want to stick to it. This stuff is also prone to warping out of shape, Ive had several tomy zoids with warped metallic parts right out of the box (for example my tomy beserk fuhrer had 2 warped blades & my geno breakers huge claws were very bent on one side).

Honestly if I was you, i'd start on either a Koto D-Style or tomytech MSS zoid kit first, then move up to the Koto HMM kits later.

how does this actually look like out of the box build with just nub removal and seam removal?

my assumption is that the purple runners are the rubber parts. It should be pointed at to everyone that Biozoids had a LOT more rubber then normal zoids. to the point that they had entire armor parts of rubber, they are not a typical zoid both in show and in kit form.

how is the quality on that kit? is the torso based on the mg zaku 2.0 mainly?

Im thinking about buying one soon, cheapest ive found is $45usd with free shipping.
>>
>>6219890
It's alright. The plastic is clearly 3D printer plastic. The mold is good, but requires SOME clipping of connection pegs that were molded too long for the holes they connect to.

Don't bother using the hands as the fingers are terrible. The claws are bad enough, but the fingers don't fit in the slots at all.

Some of the joints, particularly the arm pegs, are very weak and snap easily, you have to be careful there. It does come with an led kit, but it requires self solder and doesn't show where the wires feed through the model, so you have to use some common sense and planning before assembling
>>
>>6219912
What?

3D printer plastic is just regular plastic.
>>
>>6219922
Yes, but it has the obvious 3D printer texture you only get off of 3D printed plastic. That weird, kinda grainy feel
>>
>>6219922
1. There's not just one type of plastic. Most Bandai models use PVC plastic with ABS plastic. Like Tamiya liquid cement works well with PVC but not with a lot of other types of plastic. Hell, there's even multiple types of different 3D printed plastic.

2. The way parts are made with 3D printing, they get weird textures. Sometimes like grainy, sometimes really dusty. Whereas Bandai kits are usually molded, giving it a smoother texture.

Gunpla uses almost no PVC, or at least I haven't seen any for as long as I've built them. They use PE for soft plastic and PS for most parts, with MGs often using some type of ABS for inner frame parts and other load bearing parts.

Tamiya's liquid cement is made for PS, the most common kind of plastic found in gunpla since it reacts to almost any kind of common plastic solvent, making it easy to cement parts together without damaging the plastic. PVC is a plastic that responds to almost nothing, which is why it's almost impossible to paint, and also found in a lot of water piping. Soft PVC is only found in action figures and almost never models.

I have two 3D printers and one of them is custom designed and made. I know you can print with multiple types of plastic. but I think it's clear the Zaku tank isn't 3D printed. Polystyrene is usually printed using FDM printers, in which case you get layers because the plastic is laid on top of itself like a continuous stream of bricks or a poop pile. It won't have a dusty texture it'll have a smooth one direction, ribbed the other texture. SLS printing will give you grainy plastic but it's extremely expensive for good prints so a Chinese company would never use it to sell cheap knockoffs, and PS almost can't be used (it exists though) because it'll crack very easily meaning you can't use it for anything other than large objects. Nylon is more common but it's decently tough, but hard to paint or won't bond using a solvent cement like Tamiya's cements.

Most likely the metal molds Hobbyking used is just poorly milled and/or they sprayed release agent that's not great and gave the plastic a texture. Try cleaning it in warm soapy water. Injection molding is a complicated process and the problems are probably because Hobbyking isn't particularly good at making molds or has old, shitty machines that cooked the plastic until it degraded and the parts turned brittle or warped.
>>
>>6219979
And I want to point out the reason why you pay for Bandai Hobby is because they're the kings of what they do. Their mold engineering and molding are second to none and besides a few bad kits they're unmatched at making molded plastic.

A lot of toys have shitty, brittle plastic or warped parts from time to time. It's probably because whoever they hired to make the toys just do whatever they want, but Bandai Hobby does it all in house and it really shows. They almost never have bad kits even though they pump gunpla out like candy.

Of course, it's nice that Hobbyking is making custom designs, it's too bad they're just nowhere near as good as Bandai at making plastic.
>>

I'm looking to upgrade my set of files. For a long time I've been using a bastard file for removing lots of material/leveling surfaces, and a simple three file set. I don't even remember the brand. The set contains a flat, a half round, and a round file with rubber grips. No markings whatsoever, and they have a blue rubber carrying pouch with a clear front. They might be Hasegawa? Anywho, I find them to be too coarse to use for finishing surfaces, and I'd like some recommendations for a set of fine files. Budget is of no real concern, but I don't want to pay like $50+ for a hand made file.

Also, I'm using the files correctly. Steady strokes in one direction running down the length of the file. The files I'm currently using leave shallow streaks down the entire workpiece.

>>
>>6220226
I don't think hand files will ever finish a surface, but I believe mineshima makes some good ones
>>
>>6220226
You're looking for single-cut pattern, graded smooth or swiss cut #2 files for finishing. But that's more for metal applications, for plastics just jump to 800, then 1000+ grit sandpaper progressively for finishing.

Personally I use diamond files for shaping because they are like permanent 200 grit sandpaper on a stick. They are also rust-resistant due to the chromium layer.
>>
>>6220226

files are no good for finishing plastic. Most important is having the correct size & shape for the job more than anything else, any decent quality brand will do. for plastic finishing, 400 - 2000 grit wet & dry sandpaper is the cheap option. If you dont mind spending a bit more, Wave file sticks (get both soft & hard) from HLJ are absolutely god tier on plastic, after i tried them its my main go to for sanding. Also absolutely amazing (if you do shiny gloss finishes) are the god hand sanding sponge sets, theres a finishing set with 5 sponges ranging from 4000 grit to 10000 grit, these are amazing for evening out a surface without damaging fine details or for getting a near mirror finish on clear cote.

Ordered a HG Nu Gundam, and in the process of setting it up and cutting out pieces I came to realize it was missing Runner A. Reported it to the seller/shop and now they sent a vaguely wrote letter telling me they want it back, but that it was sold as is complete.

Would it be stupid of me to just disregard this, keep the kit and buy a new Nu, and see about using silicon to mold the parts I need from A?

So I airbrushed chrome silver on top of gloss black on top of airbrushed fine surface primer, all tamiya, on a few spoons for practice. The black coat had pretty heavy orange peeling, but the people I showed this to say they can't see any orange peeling on the silver coat whatsoever.

Am I doing this alright, or am I going about it wrong?

airbrush primer, let it dry (buff with 2000grit (or 4000 or 8000 if you have polishing gear) for the black, tamiya X1 enamel 70% with tamiya X2 thinner 30% (mix well) then mist a light coat on barely covering the surface (giving it tooth to stick to), wait 3 mins, then give the whole thing a full coverage one slow pass at a time, the second one area looks wet move to the next, never target the same area too long and never stop moving. it takes practice.

Indeed, their sheer ambulatory nature makes them a great addition, and all the SYMMETRY of the suit and it's armaments is now making me want Kimaris Vidar more than regular Vidar.

Only real issue I have with it now is that he only has the right spear-thrusting hand, meaning he can only give Terminator Thumbs-up with his right arm!

There are two better options for you. I don't touch enamels anymore with Gunpla.
First option, grab some Pitt pens. There cheap, water based and come in black, brown, grey. You can wipe them away and they don't bother the kit at all.
Second option, go to oil paint. Abteilung 502 starship filth it's what I upgraded to. Love the color and same deal, just wipe it away with no damage. Mig even makes an oilbrusher series with it as one of the colors so it's premixed and has a super thin brush.

Hi guys, I bought a plamo of a gundam double x, I got it from amiami's pre owned section. As far I know this series is pretty old, and the model kit came out on 1996. The box says it was made on 1996, but I'm not sure if the plamo is really old or if it's a reissue. Can you help me?
>>
>>6223204
The reissues still use the same mold, so you're still gonna have to paint it to make it look decent regardless of when it was printed.

This is the date on the box. When bandai reissues a plamo, does the box include the rerelease date or just the date of the initial release?

>>6223209
How can I be sure if the model is a first release or a reissue?
>>
>>6223004
Lavender, blue, and a bit of red.

I'm building an MG strike freedom and heard the gold inner frame looks much better painted

I've got a gold marker coming in two weeks but wouldn't it be better to use a spraycan?
should I be priming for either marker or spraycan?

Should I really be bothering that much for the inner frame if I'm not painting the outside, maybe I should paint the whole thing instead
>>
>>6223428
Dont use marker for large areas, the quickest way to make it look good would be to get a couple of tamiya gold or platinum gold for the frame. You can always topcoat the outer non-painted parts so that the whole kit looks consistent and doesnt have that factory sheen.
>>
>>6223447
I don't think I can ship spraycans so I'll have to use whathever brand my local hobbyshop sells.
Maybe I should just panel line and topcoat this kit and buy an airbrush for later
>>
>>6223428
IIRC gundam marker and paint in general kills ABS plastic unless you prime first.
>>
>>6223484
ABS = Polycaps?
>>
>>6223045
I see, thanks.
How about the paint and articulated parts? Does it wear off?
How do you paint skin?
>>
>>6223538
polycaps are PE (polyethylene)
Inner frame parts are usually ABS (Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene)
>>6223484
Aren't gundam markers a mix of acrylic and alcohol?
All I can find is that acrylics don't stick well to abs unless primed, nothing about damaging it
>>
Should i just ditch the Future and use lacquer gloss spray cans? I dont want to wait a week for a glosscoat to fully chemically dry.
>>
>>6223212
Youre a fucking idiot
>>
Apologies if this has been answered in the guide, but can I always use the sandpaper with the finest grit (the larger grit values) in all cases?
For example, can I use an ultrafine grit, which is usually used for finishing touch ups I believe, for the whole process of sanding the nubs off? Usually, it is a transition of a fine grit to the finest grit when sanding a nub right? I would assume it will take a longer time, is that all?
Trying to save as much cost in building my model here.

You're not saving any money by only using super fine grit sandpaper. You'll both waste more sandpaper and your time.
>>

Sandpaper costs cents per sheet, if you cant even afford varying grits of sandpaper, I think you should drop this hobby until you get more money

The only prepainted parts are the crotchpiece, neck scrunchie, and maybe the boobs for innocentia, who knows

Just take note that parts fit can be very, very tight, so cut pegs if you want to disassemble later on. Some pieces are also really fragile, like that retarded neck balljoint. And If you're welding, take note that some parts are ABS, so make sure your cement can weld those.

A lot of plastic on plastic joints, so expect them to loosen if you fiddle with them often
>>
>>6223883
that would include real frame arms and zoids which does not fight the theme. 'robot girls general' is possible but still includes things that we have in the past not wanted included in the thread. It is possible it will change as we get more new folk who can not really afford shinki collecting as those costs continue to rise so only girls they have are FAGs and MDs.

>>6223547
depends on the paint you use, joints will over time always wear away even the most durable paint and top coat jobs if the joints are moved a lot. If you like the flesh tone she already has, just top coat her flesh parts, no need to paint. So that helps solve the issue of rubbing paint for a lot of the joints since it will be a lot less noticeable when small areas of topcoat rub off vs paint.

yeah as someone who does scale models it probably never occurred to you while it is something we take for granted as common knowledge around here. The full potential of everything a flat coat can do really becomes apparent with colored snap kits. I have several kits where I painted some portions because the plastic color is really off(Looking at you MG Kampfer!) but left the rest bare. Several layers of Flat/Matte later and the entire kit looks like it was painted, impossible to tell which was and was not. It is also great for being lazy and not properly buffing out your sanded spots. long as the area was sanded down with fine grit, a few layer of flat coat will make it vanish. it can help disguise some stickers if they are trimed well, you will still get a noticbly raised area but the sticker edges will blend in more.

What matte cote do you use? I airbrush Humbrol Mattcote to my models, it is really good leaving absolutely zero shine but it does have a rather "sandy" finish to the touch.
