Anons that build large ships, space or otherwise; how do you start?

I'm wanting to build both a spaceship and a regular sailing ship, but I never actually know how to start off so I just end up doing nothing and getting frustrated.

I tend to start with modifying the existing designs and see where that gets me.

Pic related, reworking the Raid Zeppelin.

So my advice would be to download some instructions and try following that using your own bricks.

PS. I know, I should clean up my stuff.
>>
>>6162059
>how do you start
Grab a pen and paper and draw a shit load of top-down silhouettes of shapes that vaguely resemble spaceships. From there pick your favorite(s) and work out how to best translate that into bricks. Getting started is a lot easier when you have something to go on, even if it's only chickenscratch scribbles on a napkin.

So this is my traveling companion. I bring him with me wherever I go. The problem is that his particular torso and arms tend to crack. I've replaced it numerous times, but I grow tired of having to do so. What I'd like to know is if there is a way to prevent it from cracking or if I should try replacing the torso with an older one that will be less likely to crack.
>>
>>6162116
The way you store it during travel could be the reason behind the cracking.

I've been going mostly around the states from time to time. Colorado was the first, then back to Ohio (where I live and take most of my pictures), and this summer I went to North Carolina. The last two cracks were from just me traveling back and forth from work and a few other local places.

Finally started getting around to mass-cleaning my bricks because I never cleaned the entire collection when I came out of my dark age and some of the bricks haven't been washed in 30+ years and are ATROCIOUS

After soaking the blues in a 1:1 Simple Green and water for a week, rinsing them well, and starting on the next batch, I realized that two pairs of 2x2 bricks were stuck together and didn't get cleaned

muthafugga

Yes I sort bricks by color (1x1 bricks are sorted separately though)

Bought the Riddler mobile set and four blind bags from the Batman Movie series.

Ended up gettng three batman variants and Catman. Catman's got a black guy head so I swapped his head with Caveman Batman head (and added Caveman Batman's flash hands to my custom fodder pile).

Glam Rock Batman is also going to be use for custom fodder plus Pool Party Batman.

Also, Police Officer Black Barbara Gordon's got a sexless torso, so you can use her body for police officer custom fodder male or female.

Enjoyed Riddler and Beware the Batman Magpie. Calander Man and Kite Man are so-so. The set's Batman is pretty good though...

Anyone know what's the release plan for Clock King going to be? Blind bag or box set?

Is it painful? Or like, does your nail just peel off and shit?

My pinky toes are extremely small and cant grow actual nails out of themselves, its always been weird to me.
>>
>>6162931
Aside from being aesthetically unpleasant the worst effect is the nails are quite brittle, cracking and splitting and creating jagged edges. I have to trim them very close to the quick, can lead to some discomfort. One of my thumbs has a tender spot around the base of the nail from it bunching up in the middle, that one concerns me a bit but I don't know what to do about it.
>>
>>6162940
Couldnt they maybe....remove them? Like surgically or something?
>>
>>6162945
Probably, but nails take ages to grow back and I'm not sure they'd even come back normal. All my nails are affected, can't really see myself going through that many procedures when the outcome isn't guaranteed.

It was weird, for the longest time my left index and right pinky were unaffected while the others more or less all went bad together, eventually the holdouts followed suit though the left index is the only one without a fold or bump of some kind in it.

Well, shit man, sorry genetics decided to fuck with you in such a strange way. You seem like yer pretty sporting about though, which is always a good thing. You could always paint them or something though, people nowadays wont even look twice at a guy wearing nail polish (I do all the time, black and or dark red. A holdout from my gothy days, which I still practice as much as possible, but I dont go out much, so there isnt as much reason to get dolled up all the time like I used to!)

I have a lego Darth Vader keychain on my backpack, so technically I carry a lego figure everywhere I go :)
>>
How do you guys deal with big sale blow outs? What do you pick or how do you solve out if it's worth getting. My local Walmart hit cheap prices of discontinued Lego sets, mostly Mixels and Nexo Knights. I bought all the Mixels because they were 1.00 each so there is 0 buyers remorse to that but the Nexo Knight sets I'm giving more pause with, I bought them because again these were last market clearance prices (example Clay's Rumble Blade for 10.00, Jestro's evil mobile for 17.00, etc) but I'm just looking at a pile of what could be hording. I don't want to build the sets and I have no ideas on what to use the pieces for at the moment and yes getting an estimated 350.00 lego sets for 130.00 is a great fucking deal that's still just a waste of 130.00 if they are never used or just gather dust. So I guess I'm just curious how you guys deal when big clearance events happen.

The interior aft of the bridge is rather bare as it's intended to carry a ground vehicle for exploration. It could be fitted out for additional crew stations if desired, been giving some thought on an alternate interior configuration, perhaps with a few smaller, one-man vehicles.

Probably because I took the parts left from the destruction of my 2004 Falcon and built a ship from what remained. Wouldn't it make more sense to just cover up the top with a square of cardboard? It'd probably look less cheap, as well.
>>
>>6163714
The whole point of that display's (poorly planned) design is that you can see the graphics of the t-shirts that are stacked on the top shelves.

Putting a piece of cardboard over it would just invite a lot of questions about "why is there a piece of uncolored cardboard taped to the top of this display", followed by some epic FB pictures of someone who lifted the cardboard up and took a picture of the display.

I don't understand why so many people have a hard time understanding the concept that "corporations like profit, and associating kids' toys with Nazis causes them to lose profit".

>>
>>6163850
mixels give the most mobility but the least support
the tecnic balljoints support decent weight, but they're large and blocky, and have less range than you would expect, without taking the piece off (you can put it on normal, or at a 90 degree angle, and they have different range of motions)

theres also the tecnic clicky friction pins, that are pretty much the same size as the ball joints, but support alot more weight. i dont like them though, since they have limited posing, from the clicking poses

neighbors moved out and gave me an old tub of Legos that was their sons as a thank you for helping them move furniture into the van.
Found this guy in the pile and it hit me with nostalgia. I had all the UFO sets as a kid including this guys set. Lost them to a fire sadly but as time goes I forgot about them. He's surprisingly clean looking. I'm wondering if the kid didn't like him that much considiering most the other minifigs in the tub are either broken or weathered bad.
Also what set was this guy from? I know it was a tiny set but I can't recall what it built atm.

UFO was a strange line for Lego back in the 90s. There was no sense of what they were or why they did anything. It was just a bunch of not predator looking Aliens with robots hanging out on asteroids. Also heat stamp bricks that showed the logo.

I heard someone say the Townhouse was bad value but it's still leagues better than Star Wars or superheroes (same for all the 3-in-1 Creators) and I really enjoy how it looks.

I love all the building-style 'mini modular' 3-in-1s, particularly the ones that are fully enclosed like the Lakeside Lodge. Anyone know if the family house and modern house are open-back facades or fully enclosed?

The top right one looks like a shitty smaller rehash of Changing Seasons without a light brick which is disappointing.

>which do people consider the better shark guy minifig, the Atlantis Shark Warrior or the CMF shark man?
Depends on what you want.
Shark guy is more happy and expressive - for comic situations/city sets.
Atlantis shark is more of adventure/action based minifigs - i want just the head to turn it into a "shark headed pirate".
PS:
By the way - there is also this part that also can be used as a "mouth" for those costumes. And it looks even creepier.

I remember one anon posted a photo of a Piggy Boy with this part inside - it looked like some horror movie material.

Twice as many accessories, because the lego employee was nice, and we had a fun conversation.

This has my two favorite figures. The "wizard" Luiz, and The Police Mam both on the far left (or right, fuck japmoot)

A series of sets made by KAZI called X-AGENTS. Looks like a mix of ultra agents and tron. Figs look like shit, but they are just renders, im guessing. Usually, if yer lucky, even if a knockoffs heads are shit, the body prints good enough, and head swaps are easy so, yeah.

As mentioned before, getting super accurate proportions in minifig scale can be very hard (especially since minifigs don't even have human proportions)
But it think the main reason it looks that way is because the size of the room.

Minifigs are a lot more wide than tall compared to human proportions, and the horizontal space of your room is literally the size of a broom-cabinet plus a step or two to walk on and the windows are incredibly low. I'd heighten the table to just above hips and make the chairs two or maybe three plates high. But there probably isn't enough room in that specific house right now.

Is that sticker custom btw? If not, what set is it from?

It's a good set. The wing design is well done and the fact that it seats minifigures is a nice touch.

In the unlikely event that this tidbit is of any interest to you, that set happens to have a lot of the dark blue pieces you need to re-colour the UCS Slave I to the Jango version.

What's a good set to kick off a LEGO city display?
As a kid I had heaps of Harry Potter LEGO and now, having come out of my dark age this year, I have bought quite a few Star Wars sets. I never really cared for the perceived "mundanity" of the more vanilla themes like city, but the more time I've spent looking at them, the more they intrigue me. I suppose seeing so much of New Jang City has inspired this sudden interest also.
I'm also pretty keen on the Fun in the Park minifig set but I don't really want to buy it unless I have somewhere for them to live or at least hang out. So yeah, what's a good set to begin my LEGO city venture? I do like some of the creator sets - the corner deli looks nice and the tree house is really cute too. I also like the lakeside cabin, but the latter two are not exactly city-esque.

Like >>6164790 said, modulars. But if that is too much $, there are alot of small creator buildings out.
>>
>>6164777
i realized that after the first set i made.
the logic i had was, i simply have less women, and women can use gender neutral bodies
then i realized i got far too many women heads, and needed women bodies, and there were alot of nice manly men heads

only three of the 12 apparently are the correct sex head/body combo

If you don't mind dropping over 150 USD a set, the Modular Buildings line from Creator Expert is sure to be a treat. Highly detailed, packed with minifigs, and each one looks good in almost every angle.

Of course for a more restrained budget, smaller Creator sets like the Corner Deli are good too.
>>
>>6164785
not to me nitpicky, because im trying to offer an actual suggestion, but it sounds like you want more of a "town" or "village" than a "city"
and theres nothing wrong with that
a few houses and stores sitting on a shelf is just as nice of a display as a bunch of big squares you might not like as much, that all actually connect to eachother
a cabin and treehouse certainly fit more in a town than a city block

For a smaller type of city, you might want to look into the other shops that have been made to connect directly to (and look good with) that Corner Deli. The 90 dollar Bike Shop & Cafe (31026) may be hard to find at this point, but the other three should still be available if you look, and are around 40-50 US dollars.

These buildings look good near the suburban houses that they also have in the Creator range, and the playset-style public service buildings in City.

That's about $32 Burgerbucks, and I'd punch a soccer mom in the mouth to find it for that. I think the best I saw it for around here was $45USD, and I regret not buying one for myself. You did real good, Yuroanon.

I could still grab one at full retail, though. Looks like a killer set.
>>
>>6164785
Adding to what other anons are saying, the 3 in 1 creator sets are great because you can eventually just buy a second one and have a modular scale building by just slapping them together

No no, you're not nitpicking, you're right. I was just using "city" as an overall blanket term. Having grown up in an Australian country town (which actually gets called a city despite a distinct lack of city-like features), a smaller scale display appeals to me more. Think something like Springfield, where kids have enough room to have tree houses in their back yard.
>>6164799
God, the modulars are gorgeous. I don't know if I can justify dropping so much right off the bat, but I would love to get the detective's office at some point. I was thinking of going smaller to start off, though, to sort of dip my toe in and test the waters.
>>6164814
