Post your custom projects here; mods, fixes, repaints, dios, effects parts, accessories, 3D printed stuff, or whatever else you're working on.

Offer tips and advice, ask for help, post tutorials/guides, and have fun!
>>
Here's some tips from the previous threads:

Beginners: practice on cheap figures first.

For sculpting on figures: use 2-part epoxy putty like Aves apoxie or fixit.

For tools: try a basic carving/sculpting set like the kind arts & crafts stores have, and calipers for symmetry.
Dental tools have also been said to work well.
Also, using a Dremel is recommended. Minimites (the small $20-25 ones) are fine for starting out, but the battery life is poor. Upgrade to a corded one only if you want to get deeper into customizing. They are useful for stuff outside of the hobby though, so it's a good investment regardless.

For paints: use acrylics. Paint in multiple, thin coats. Brands like Vallejo/P3/Citadel are recommended, because of pigment quality.

Use a sealer when finished to protect your work. There are matte varieties and sealers that give a glossy look. As with painting, use multiple thin coats.

A flex shaft attachment on a Dremel is a godsend and relatively inexpensive. The grinding shield is also pretty useful, but you can improvise one using a cut open soda bottle.

no, it is Magic Sculpt. Any advice on that? I think sanding is one of the most taxing thing ever. Just water smoothing it out before it dries?
>>
>>6128373
>>6128375
I have thought about that, but I lack the proper tools to grind up the joints, sand them, etc to prevent paint rub, not to mention how hard it is to get an exact same flesh tone to prevent neck seam. I also don't have like 20+ hours of free time to invest in a product that have a great likelyhood to look like utter disaster as an amateur custom work.

It's not like I'm trying to get $500+ collector's grade super professional airbrushed custom like pic related. I just want like mass produced hasbro tier quality custom.
>>
>>6128377
I've never used Magicsculpt but if it works go for it. Anything you can do to get rid of fingerprints to not have to sand is a good thing. What tools are you using? A flat blade from an x-acto or even a butter knife can help shape the "clay" well for machined looking parts.

Look I was posting about my custom and someone from the previous thread is now constantly telling me to leave. If anything he started wasting posts.

But anyway here's a question: Is regular spray paint alright for strong flexible plastic or should I get a sprayer like pic related?

Spray should be fine, the last time I researched paint for flexible materials I came across an automotive forum taking about spray paint on bumpers. So I don't think you have to go pro.

I bought a Printrbot Play which is around $400ish.
The spools of PLA filament are like $25 per color.
It takes a solid week to really figure out all the bumps and pitfalls of printing, breaking it, fixing it, tweaking settings, getting everything to look nice.

As far as 3d data, there are various exporters and converters for file formats. Eventually you import them into Blender. Blender itself is a huge learning curve but with enough google searching you can learn the basics. From there you fix them up and export as .STL or .OBJ and then run them through Netfabb to clean up holes. Then they should print fine with a slow enough speed and lots of supports.

Given where the quality is at with these affordable printers you absolutely could print your own wargame armies.
It's really up the the purists if they need the official models due to appeal.
>>
>>6131400
>>6131425
that's really dope, dude

I am waiting for the day that a household printer can produce a miniature that can be smooth looking and hold a decent amount of detail (within reason, and I'd probably upper the scale just be safe). When that happens I want to go into boardgame design and just print off endless assets for my game -- selling it as a garage kit for cheap, but having a wide range of game tiles and minis.

Would be fun, but I also don't know much about 3d modeling yet... maybe I'll learn in the mean time while I wait for said magical printer.

thanks for the info

>maybe I'll learn in the mean time while I wait for said magical printer.

Well believe it or not that level of quality is already possible, even with the entry level printers, if you got a fine-bore nozzle like 0.2mm or even 0.1mm and printed at 0.05mm or even 0.03mm layer height. As long as you had a design that was pyramidal and were willing to wait you could print things that look the same as a sprue of plastic injection molding.

Pic not mine but you can see.
>>
>>6128377
Yes, smooth your sculpt with water before it dries. I don't have too many issues with fingerprints when I use MagicSculpt, but I usually need to sand for really smooth planes or sharp corners.

You can add food coloring during the kneading process, but I don't know how color fast food coloring is.

I found this page. So after the material is hardened, you can also dye it. Customizers have used fabric dye to color regular plastic toys, although the biggest company(RIT) changed their formula a few years ago, but it still might be good for casein plastic.

http://plastiquarian.com/?page_id=14228
>The material readily takes a surface dye, so coloured items can be quickly made from pale coloured stock items.
>>
>>6132330
Planning on painting it.
Kinda wanna cut it up and start experimenting with making molds/resin kits and such before painting though.
Not sure how I should go about casting the hair, might have to just cut that piece off.
>>
>>6128876
underrated
>>
Are "pressure molds" viable? I was thinking of using silicone molds to press the other material I could find, kneadatite, into the shape of the mold in case polyurethane resin ended up too frail to withstand being put on a balljoint.
Maybe make it so the mold has more than one or two ridges to where the leftover kneadatite can exit.
>>
>>6132546
Yes but if the casting material is too thick, it has issues picking up minute details.

And obviously, you'll want to use rigid mold material. Silicone's too rubbery.
>>
>>6125280
Tfw always jelly
>>
>>6132559
Huh.
Can silicone become hard enough to retain detail? Other than that I have more kneadatite, that crappy clay that cures on air that is used for arts and crafts and is curing rubbery lately for some reason, and I will try making caseine once I get the time to sit and test it.

I've been thinking about painting over the battle damage on Knifehead instead of buying the clean one since it goes as high as $200 online. Is it much more expensive to buy the paint and tools I need for just one custom job?
>>
>>6132831
To be clear, I would be painting it for my own collection, not to resell.
>>
>>6132831
I don't think it will cost $200 for a few jars of acrylic paint and a couple brushes. :-P

Consider removing the paint as well. I saw someone suggest acetone based nail polish remover on a forum, but that's usually frowned upon because it can fuck up the plastic.

Does anyone have a link for a diagram of how modern ML torsos are put together? With Toy Biz every one was different, but it seems likely that they're all on the same model these days. Particularly interested in how the abdomen and crotch peg together, as well as how the shoulders are pegged into the chest. I know you can just boil and pop the shoulders out of a female buck, but you can't do that with a male buck, correct?
>>
>>6139204
You should make a tutorial. This parametric modeling shit is beyond me
>>

The figure is only $13.50 at Mattel's site, that might be your best bet rather than wait for a loose one.
>>

Superglue feathers on it to trigger autists. But seriously, I've long wanted an allosaurus figure that was articulated and at least as large as the Thrasher T-Rex. Sadly this is looking like a long-term labor of love due to finances (the head was $36 + shipping!) and the fact that I'm unemployed right now. I have an 80% finished articulated 1:12 dino in the works (a small-sized one, don't get too excited) that just needs tweaks to the original CAD model to attach parts better. All I can say is that it's a well-known theropod. Once I'm satisfied with the final print of it I'll post it on my Shapeways shop with links to assembly instructions.

>>6140769
Eh, I have SolidWorks so the methods I use may not translate to other programs for this. I might post some screenshots of the pre-lofted wireframe to give people an idea of what can be done in some cases.
>>
>>6140755
Correct, to disassemble the male buck you have to crack open the entire thing. I THINK you start with the crotch section, then abs, and then chest. Shoulders attach at swivel-ends of the ball-hinge, so cracking open the chest would have happen to get them out.

I'm having some issues with my Guts figma.

The left leg buckles under the weight of his upper body, it's super floppy for some reason, it barely stays on the ball joint and pops off very easily.

I tried using clear nail polish in the leg joint and on the crotch 'Y' joint itself but it just flaked off and went back to being super loose. Any tips for a permanent fix?

Ooh boy. You better get in some practice first if you want your sculpt to match the look of that hyper-detailed SAS. In fact, it might be better to just commission a cloth jacket from a doll clothing maker if you're new to sculpting...

>>6145731
Sculpt your positive, make a mold from it, paint the inside with Mr. Casttoner. The idea is the same as rotocasting pretty much--instead of filling the mold, you pour only a little in and then rotate and swish it around to coat the inside. This results in a thin, hollow "shell" that works just like the soft rubbery clothes on Figmas.

I've been wanting to make a nice Celtic Guardian figure and was thinking of using a Marvel Legends figure as the base. Only problem is that pretty much all male action figures have a big squared off chin that doesn't suit CG's slimmer face. I just thought that maybe I could stick a female figure's head on the body since they have the pointier chin (looking at White Tiger since I happen to have her head on hand) but I also know that not all of them have the same neck ball. While not exactly a custom fig, this is /toy/ related at least. I found a boxed Daimos at the local comic shop and the guy only wanted 200 for it. A daimos with a nice box goes for 6 or 7 hundred so I figured I'd try to restore this one. I started by breaking down the box by super carefully splitting the corner flaps, not cutting them at the corner but splitting the attachment flaps from the inside. Then took a blowdryer and heated up the tape (oh man it was covered in tape) till it was tacky and slid a rounded exacto blade under them, then took rubbing alcohol and gently buffed off the remaining adhesive. Whole box got ironed from the underside first with high steam, then again at a higher heat no syeam. Big tears I re-aligned and painted clear elmers glue between the pieces and then pressed to dry, about 150 pounds to really get them smoothed out. Im currently painting only the exposed cardboard with high-gloss acrylic, but I'm still a long way off. Idk if anyone does this for vintage toys but I've only seen one other guy do a jumbo machinder box before.

Oh no son. Oh no, oh no, oh no. It looks like you weathered by instinct, which almost never comes out good. First off, you went WAY overboard, subtlety is key. Secondly, you didn't put much thought into where you weathered. Dirt accumulates in crevices, edges get the most wear and tear, etc. Third, DO NOT go by intuition if you're new at it! Look up some model tank or plane weathering tutorials and learn from them.
>>
>>6151151
Thanks buddy. I think I need to do another press, probably with a clamp this time right above where 'guardians' is on the top of the box but it's coming along well. Surprisingly there's not a ton of info on restoring this stuff, but there are places that'll do it for you for tons of money.

I don't know how much detail can be retained with hot glue. Or how much it might bond to or even damage what you're molding, and the only way I can see making a 2 part mold is to encase the entire item in hotglue and cut it out, possibly damaging you original toy/sculpture. And the mold might warp/degrade if you're casting with something that sets with an exothermic reaction(plaster of Paris or epoxy resin(well, not for you Peru-bro)).

Oh, can you get porcelain clay in Peru? I've never looked into it because it shrinks when it hardens, but a lot of crafters that make beads and charms use it.

And I just found this recipe for cold porcelain. Please tell me you can get plain white glue in Peru.

Yeah. Somehow our lawmakers haven't found an excuse to say we can make drugs with it for a change.

Funnily enough, just yesterday I found a place that sells epoxy putty and I can order liquid silicone and polyurethane resin from the same place.
If I'm searching for something similar to Oyumaru now is because I trust normal epoxy putty more than epoxy resin to make parts since I have no idea how durable it is, I'd rather not try it just like that as it is pretty expensive to begin with.
I want to try using a two part press mold if possible.

Shapeways's sinterized nylon is rather smooth thanks to their printers they use. Up close even their's is grainy like fine sandpaper and stepping is visible up close too. Sadly the printers they use cost I think $100K USD, so it'll be a while before their costs will be affordable for hobbyists to own on a budget.

I like this a lot. It says either that they were stranded for years in the middle of nowhere, or that their armor was salvaged. Maybe a combination of both? Troopers left behind after a battle (presumed dead) in an incredibly inhospitable environment with no way to reach any other planets. After a few years they get pucked up by a passing ship.

Did you have a back story? I'm realy loving the first two troopers. The bare fingers on one is a nice touch. It adds to the whole worn out modified armor look.

Piece of advice: splatter-effects of grime/mud are a lot finer on human-sized things, so scaled down the splatterings would look like specks with more a cute splash-effects. Look at the BS Sabine's paint splatterings and how fine those are, they're rather close to a scaled-down copy.

That is, of course, if you were trying to go for mud and swamp-stained troops.

This is the stuff I use for making hair, it's called Wildfire. You can find it with the beading materials in most arts & crafts stores, and walmart carries it too. It's soft and plaint, and it will hold it's shape somewhat if you smooth it into place a bit.

Also that gaping hole was a test to see how durable it was. It can also be spray painted and dremled like any other plastic material.

Another Axel owner here.

I have no idea how he managed to break the exhaust, that shit is ultra sturdy. Kickstand maybe, that shit it tiny- if it were plastic it would break even easier. As for the handlebars, they were initially plastic, the replacements are metal and they ain't breaking any time soon.

Honestly I love Axel, I wish they'd put some metal on the other figures.

So, I got a ROTF Swerve to use the head for a custom and I want to make a copy.
I'm considering using protoputty for the mold but there are a couple of things I'm having trouble with.

Is silicone stiff enough to avoid deforming the mass that's put inside a mold made of it?
The head is made from 3 pieces, the front of the head, the lower back of the head, and a small blue piece that forms the back of the head and has two long protrusions that form the eyes. Are there any issues I should be aware of when making molds for long, thin pieces like those?
>>
>>6161474
That's chump change... you're asking someone to do skilled work that'll take a few dozen hours. Even at 80 they're making peasant money
>>
>>6163768
What do you mean a few dozen hours?
I've seen guys take apart voyagers on less than an hour and the job I asked was just painting the thing in a plain color which doesn't take that much unless you fall for the thin your paints meme of thinning paints one step short of a paintwash.
>>
>>6164275
Then do it yourself if it's so easy.
>>
>>6163757

How delicate are the parts? If you put equal pressure on the piece, it should be fine.

May i ask for some genric guide for picking up sculpting?I am a beginner and the more in depth the better and i would prefer it written, but videos are very welcome too.
Thank you
>>
>>6168701
Start with plastilina modeling clay. It's wax-like in that the warmer it gets the softer it becomes (eventually melting when exposed to open flames). It's dirt cheap and easy to find at any hobby/crafts stores made by several companies. Note: don't do polymer or plastic-based clay, that's different and will be something to tackle later. Plastilina clay is s good way to begin sculpting and get a feel for how to shape things. Freezing the stuff makes it stiff and hold its shape while cold, great for making molds of stuff you sculpt or add sculpts to.

Get some basic sculpting tools at hobby stores too. A set of wooden tools are less than $10 at Michael's.

As for techniques, start with a ball of clay and add punches to add mass, welding them together by rubbing the edge of the new mass into the main piece of clay. Tools will help you carve and texture contours depending on their shapes.

Yeah but the balljoint concerns me.
I could just dremel the underside of the copy and attach a fitting female balljoint but I'm afraid of fucking up because bayformers' heads are tiny. Also, the slot is decently tight and has some small holes going into the inside of the head so it might get stuck to the mold.

I'll post pics later, I don't have it with me right now.
