Post your custom projects here; mods, fixes, repaints, dios, effects parts, accessories, 3D printed stuff, or whatever else you're working on.

Offer tips and advice, ask for help, post tutorials/guides, and have fun!
>>
Here's some tips from the previous threads:

Beginners: practice on cheap figures first.

For sculpting on figures: use 2-part epoxy putty like Aves apoxie or fixit.

For tools: try a basic carving/sculpting set like the kind arts & crafts stores have, and calipers for symmetry.
Dental tools have also been said to work well.
Also, using a Dremel is recommended. Minimites (the small $20-25 ones) are fine for starting out, but the battery life is poor. Upgrade to a corded one only if you want to get deeper into customizing. They are useful for stuff outside of the hobby though, so it's a good investment regardless.

For paints: use acrylics. Paint in multiple, thin coats. Brands like Vallejo/P3/Citadel are recommended, because of pigment quality.

Use a sealer when finished to protect your work. There are matte varieties and sealers that give a glossy look. As with painting, use multiple thin coats.

A flex shaft attachment on a Dremel is a godsend and relatively inexpensive. The grinding shield is also pretty useful, but you can improvise one using a cut open soda bottle.

heres some pics of a 1/6 wolverine kit-bash I've done
I have other kit bashes as well, Grifter from wildstorm/dc comics(has some work to be done but mostly finished), snake eyes, smallville clark kent in the black trench coat, the driver and akira fudou which are both extremely simple kit bashes
I'm working on a casey jones with realistic hair which has been on the back burner forever and a golgo 13, which I've made a custom gun for
>>
>>6173334
I didn't make any of the parts myself, this kitbash is pretty simple
hot toys storm shadow gi joe 2 trenchcoat cut into a vest, hot toys winter soldier boots, hot toys days of future past wolverine belt and hot toys wolverine gloves from xmen 3
the head, body and pants are ebayable
1/6 wolverine mask, or head
1/6 hotbody or hot toys body
and 1/6 leather motorcycle outfit or varients on such
>>
>>6173343
a pic of wolverine with snake eyes
snake eyes was a simple no-work kitbash
1/6 snake eyes head is what I searched through ebay to get a pretty awesome snake eyes head with a cloth covering, I'm very certain it's sideshow
then I ordered a neck covering, or I had one from a military figure I cannibalized
they're very cheap and can be found as "1/6 black neck slip" through ebay, or neck cover if neck slip doesnt work
black military gear is very easy to find on ebay, I really like bendable hands for my figures and I thought mechanics looked pretty sweet
a lot of the military parts on him I'm pretty sure I got from monkeydepot
>>

I've got an extra Bandai Squall from 1999. How would I go about adding joints to it? I don't know anything about doing this, but I figured since I have two, I could make one more articulated.
>>
>>6173334
my other wip that I'm most focused on is my moon knight 1/6
no work done on it yet as I haven't gotten all the parts yet
>>
>>6173356
not sure how to add articulation, but assets of that figure could be cannibalized and added to a figure of similar size
maybe wrestling figures or marvel legends
>>
>>6173363
Kind just wanting more range of motion in the arms and legs. I've seen people before add joints to statueshit, so I figure it's doable, I just don't know how to go about it properly.
>>
Does anyone know how to tighten butterfly joints, specifically the ones on the new Black Spidey? I had to boil bathe him to get the arm ratchets to move but now his butterfly joints are loose as all hell.
>>

Those are some of the blank recast bodies I make for use as bases for my customs. I've recently also been experimenting with dyeing them using different skintones. This one's going to be a Dark Elf.

>>
Is airbrushing the only way to go for changing the skintone on a custom figure? The faint brush lines that are acceptable on hair/clothes Just don't seem okay for skin.
>>
>>6173860
I use Smooth-On casting material for the body, and the dyes are made by the same company (they're called "So Strong" pigments). You mix the dye into one of the casting liquids before combining them and mixing them together, so when the final product will reflect the dye color.
>>
>>6174255
>so when the final product will reflect the dye color.

I meant - when the final product cures it will reflect the dye color.
>>
>>6173544
You are some sort of goddamn wizard. Keep up the good work.

Since you're already recasting, any chance you'd also be selling blank casts?
>>
>>6173544

Would you be willing to recast the blank bodies and sell them?
>>
>>6175243
I'd be willing to buy one afterall.. it is tax season.
>>
>>6174745
>>6175243
>>6175258
As they are now, my recasts need a lot of fixup work post casting. Stuff like sanding, drilling peg holes, carving out space for ball joints, etc. This process can be really difficult to do while also making sure the joints can move correctly and also not end up too loose. I'm still a novice at casting, but when I get better at it I'll think about selling them.

>>6175783
If you want to use a dremel, use one powered by battery cells, they slow down under load and will less likely melt the plastic.

Alternatively, use a power supply to lower the voltage input to the dremel.

For manual methods, you can also use woodworking gouges or even linoleum gouges (smaller) if it's softer plastics like PS/PVC/PP.
>>
>>6175501
Is Smooth-On's cured form stiff or is it sort of like pvc in softness?
>>
>>6175879
It's a polyurethane resin, so it's pretty stiff.
>>
>>6175879
Like the above poster said, it's stiff. When you make something thin it has a little give, but I assume any soft spots will weaken over time and break eventually.
>>
>>6176158
Are there resins that mimick PVC in softness? Or epoxy mixes?
>>
>>6176719
In softness but not in strength, stuff like hands are still going to be delicate. I've been trying to figure out a way to do hands that can hold objects for some time, most materials just snap eventually or are too rubbery to hold the shape very well. There are guys who recast o-ring joe hands successfully enough but I imagine you have to be very gentile with them.
>>
>>6176136
That's what SHE said.
>>
>>6176920
You need industrial resins that need to be cured under pressure and mild heat.

http://www.ptm-w.com/technical-library/product-bulletins/Tooling%20Urethanes%20Bulletins/PT7667%20Bulletin.pdf

http://www.ptm-w.com/technical-library/product-bulletins/Production%20&%20Prototyping%20Urethanes%20Bulletins/PT8970%20Bulletin%2014Apr14.pdf

I think Formlabs is coming out with a "Durable" resin for their SLA printer that's supposed to simulate polypropylene, but it doesn't look fantastic compared to actual industrial casting resins. Might be good enough for toy hands though, as long as you don't mess with it too much.

Would air dry clay work for sculpting on a figure?
I know the sticky says to use epoxy but I've got an abundance of air dry clay I need to use.
>>

I've never done custom toys, let alone custom Transformers but I am tempted to repaint this mold (Hardhead/Quake) with a deco inspired by the toy on the right. They already 3d print custom faces so all I'd be left to do is paint the thing.

How hard is it to make custom Transformers?
>>
>>6183900
The actual painting is no harder than any other toy, but the true problem is tolerances. With a coat of paint, every surface becomes slightly thicker, and depending on the transformation, that can cause a lot of problems, like pegs or tabs not fitting into their holes anymore for example. You also have to be mindful of parts that touch or rub together during transformation, as that can scratch the paint. In some cases you can fix this with some sanding to make the parts a tad slimmer. But anyway, Hardhead is real cheap on Amazon now, so you might as well give it a shot.

The left one is almost a complete scratch build with only a few joints salvaged from various Revoltechs and a few Mixel joints. The middle one is a succubus character from a comic a friend of mine wrote in high school, and the right one was the main character of a story I abandoned. >>
>>6183943
Yeah, disassembly usually makes it easier to paint.

Really depends which figure it is and how it's put together, but in my experience, most Transformers are held together with metal pins. You need to knock these out, which can be pretty difficult. They only push out one way, the pins have these like...grooves so they stay locked in to the plastic. Someone else chime in here with more info, it's been ages since I knocked pins out of my TFs.

I want to try this custom stuff, but even if I sue Vallejo acrylics and Vallejo acrylic varnish to protect the paint something tells me it will end chipping...

For some reason the paint used in the industry seems more hard and strong... what can I ddo to make customs paint last as much as I can?
>>
>>6187256
Industrial paint uses stronger solvents that are able to carry stronger binders. Due to that they are also more toxic(perfectly safe when cured), and toxicity is a no-no in hobby paints that are being pushed to kids. Closest hobby paints get are cellulose-based (Lacquer) paint.
>>
What's a good base to make a 1/12 Neanderthal figure? Statues are fine if I can just cast sections to add joints.
>>
>>6187256
You get pretty decent paint adhesion by lightly sanding and spraying automotive primer on your pieces before painting.
When your finished painting hit it with the gloss coat for protection and finally the matte coat to bring down the shine if you don't want that shiny look.

You get more than adequate paint jobs this way. As long as your not handing the toy to a kid to play in a sandbox or something, it should be fine. It's not like factory paint jobs are immune to being chipped either.

Not all lacquers are nitrocellulose based. Most low VOC thinners probably don't even have in it.

Most lacquer paints cure very hard and brittle. Paint used on toys are usually more flexible and softer if you can believe it. It might be some sort of epoxy because there aren't any normal consumer paints that are that tough and flexible.

Okay. I spent like a whole month putting this thing together because fucking cold porcelain is taking weeks to cure for whatever reason.
I tried to key the mold using the remains of some old building blocks and secure it inside a frame so the mold will be mostly square.

One thing, though. Does proto putty stick to rubber? The piece inside is one of the FE Optimus' smokestacks which is made of this crappy soft rubber that sucks dust like crazy.

>>6192714
Thanks.
Another thing, is there any way to prevent silicon from sticking to silicone? I'll still have to make another half after make the first part of the silicone mold and the plan is basically to put silicone over silicone to make the other half.
>>
>>6192807
You would need to spray mold release, which you probably can't get Peru-bro.

I've heard of people using Vaseline and heating it up and brushing it on.

Theoretically, you just need a non-silicone based barrier, so you could spray a clear coat between the 2 parts.

Or you can make a 1 part mold and cut it in half with a zig-zag pattern so they key together.
>>
>>6192807
Powder it good with talcum/baby powder, shaking off the excess clumps. If you got it all powdered the silicone SHOULDN'T stick to the other silicone half.
>>
>>6192699
Thanks for the suggestions. Sadly Ka-Zar isn't the right body proportions. I'm trying to go for scientific-accuracy. McFarlane looks closer, I'll look into that.
>>
>>6191007
I had considered that, but this statue is so darn hard to find at this point.
Plus seeing how the neck and head are posed, cutting it up would ruin solid aspects of the sculpt.

>>
>>6193928
You don't. You buy balljoint packs. The only way to make them is to injection mold them (and well, which requires modern industrial grade machines) which obviously isn't going to happen.

Sometimes even the balljoints you can buy break from time to time.
>>
>>6193928
Do they look like Revoltech style joints? You need a dremel or rotary tool and a round bit to make space for the body, then you can use a drill bit or pin vise to make room for the peg.
>>
>>6194119
I don't know about liquid soap, I think it might pool in weird ways and leave gaps, but you could test it out and let us know.

The one thing I forgot is you're not using poured silicone, but pressing it into place. If the powder or vaseline can stay in place when you're pressing it in, then that should work. But if it's not working, then spraying clear cote and waiting for that to dry(after the silicone cured) might be your best bet.

I was going to post this on the Marvel General thread until i came across this one

I'm not a customizer but I would like some help repairing this Hulk Classics War Hulk. Here's what happened

I brought this guy just before Christmas for about $26 loose on eBay, Quite a score considering he goes for $150+ in AUD. When he arrived after New Year's Day, the head snapped because the seller didn't fucking use bubble wrap to protect the figure, just leaving it in a paper bag. Thankfully i got my refund from the cunt and was able to keep the figure

I spent the next few days heating the head and trying to remove the peg inside it. No luck. Tried using super glue and a hot glue gun to just leave the head in place. Neither worked or kept it on firmly

So I left Hitler Hulk on my display for a few months and decided to check /toy/ if anyone has any solutions on keeping the head on the figure. I'm paranoid of cracking it open and making it worse, so what are some other options?

First off, how good are your sculpting skills? Is this your first time making a custom figure?

If you could, what kind of figure and size are you shooting for? (5"-scale humanoid, 1/18 scale dinosaur, etc)

Now, Sculpey is an okay material to start off with if you have minor or no experience, but it's not the best material for a figure ultimately. Invest in some plastilina clay (NOT PLASTIC/POLYMER CLAY), it's like $3USD for a 1lb brick at hobby shops like Michaels. Plastilina clay is wax-like (warmer it gets, the softer it gets until it melts), so the only way to 'harden' it is to stick it in a freezer for an hour or so. It'll be stiff until it warms back up from the ambient temperature and handling. Use that to sculpt parts, freeze parts, then make molds using silicone (liquid or putty). Cast parts in either resin or epoxy (I personally use Plasticweld epoxy putty from Walmart and hardware stores). Green Stuff is a plastic epoxy to use, also Milliput (stiff and hard wen cured).
>>
>>6210463
Its easy, you can look out for some tutorials, there are some skills you can learn. I learned painting gundam, transformers and Marvel/DC figures, so I can paint almost every figure, just learn the process

(Cont.'d)

For joints, easy way is to buy Hobby Base joints, Revoltech joints, and/or bulk sales via eBay of loose Figma joints. Hobby Base gives you the ability to select the exact color and types, Revoltech has color, size and single/double joints options, and Figma lots are a blind bag of types/size/color. The bigger lots of Figma joints gives you better chance the exact types you need while also decreasing the number of duds-to-usable ratio in the lot.

Hi guys, recently finished my custom lancelot figure's pieces.

I was wondering if you've got any recommendations for paint to use (He is made out of resin). I usually model WW2 tanks however I figured it's better safe than sorry to ask first.

Does Vallejo work well with Resin figures? I've got a black (for his "undersuit") and the stuff needed for a Vallejo basecoat.

Was also hoping someone could recommend a good color for his armor plates (They seem to be a dark purple or a inkish blue.)

So I'd picked up three Wasps for $15 total and figured I'd just do headswaps with them. Then I found a Jae Lee Catwoman for $10 and thought "hey, I'll chop it up, sand down a Wasp, maybe gouge out some wrinkles, and call it a day."

I cut too much off of the Catwoman hands when I lopped them from her arms, and I'm not 100% sure I want to use the Catoman feet. The hands need to get the Revoltech joints sunken in a little deeper and then resculpted around them. If I cut up the feet to fit the Marvel Legends style, I know I'll need to resculpt some as well. What do you all use to fill pieces back in, or sculpt over? I like where this is heading and I don't want to lose momentum like I do with most of the shit that I chop up.

Gotta prime it first. The gunpla thread has some guys who have done good work with resin. In general a good lacquer will work just make sure your figure is clean and grease free first. I'd recommend Tamiya gray fine surface primer.

Nope, never crossed my mind. I also ask people for directions when yelp & google maps is a thing.
>>

Should done it on a figuarts to waste maximum dollars.
>>
>>6186890

Honestly very easy if you have patience. MASK YOUR FIGURES PEOPLE. Use good masking tape, I use tamiya's for these small type areas. Water down your feking paint, use thinner and brush on LIGHT AS FUCK layers.. like, if you can't see it adding any color you've done a good job. Layer that shit til it's bright fucking ugly ass blue and you'll then be sucking dicks like a goddess. PRO LEVEL PAINTING.
>>
>>6192807
>>6193073

Can confirm, vaseline works just fine. Don't really even have to heat it up. Just brush it on thin.
>>
>>6205392

Everything this guy said.
>>
>>6214509
I've got Vallejo Grey surface primer.
Would that work or is Tamiya better in general?
>>
>>6214967
Tamuya is head over heels better in general. And it's not just the fact that the Tamiya primer is good. The Vallejo primer is terrible. Like I said, ask in the gunpla thread, they can help you better.

A project I just started.
Is there somewhere to get 1:12 clothing other than AmiAmi an HLJ? The good stuff is always sold out.
>>
What's the best way to make a 1/12 tiara like pic related? I'm thinking using wire and a touch of apoxie for the welds and rhinestones, but I'm not sure if there's a better way I'm missing for something so intricate. Would trying to find tiny beads work better you think?
>>
>>6215666
You could get fine mesh and cut it out into the shape. Your best bet on faking the jewels is probably just mixing pledge acrylic floor finish with white/silver glitter and brushing it on. For the part that rests on the head you'll need a thin bar of epoxy. Paint the glitter-acrylic AFTER the epoxy cures.
>>
>>6215776

Never would have thought of that, I'll have to try that out.
>>
Do Monster High (or any other widely availble dolls) clothes work on 1:12?
>>
Started on a 1:12 scale diorama.

Yes, its an alley way.

Yes, its for cape shit.
>>
>>6215971
I started out cutting every thing by hand. Results where OK, but a little sloppy.
>>
>>6215943
Probably not. MH torsos are basically bigger than a typical 1:12 human torso unless your 1:12 is an Amazon or something it's going to look more like you have a figure shrinking out of their clothes.
>>
>>6215973
Went to wally world and bought an extendable razor blade and used the level as a guide. Results were much cleaner.

>>6216005
Looks like a good start. Are you going to put some decorations like graffiti or fliers on the wall?
>>
>>6215971
I want to make a dollhouse made out of alleyway walls and filled with alleyway things.
All stairs would be emergency stairs and every door would have exit written on it.
Every piece of furniture would be either a garbage bin or a waste container.
And instead of wallpaper there would be graffiti.

How do I add more mass to a ball joint? I swapped the GPS of a BW Grimlock with the sturdier gold of pic related but the new knee sockets are too big for BW Grimlock's thighs.

Floor polish doesn't seem to be working
>>
>>6216486
You can only really tight already fitting joints, not make smaller ones fit in oversized sockets.

In any case, try heavy duty electrical tape. It's usually my go to for the more egregious loose joints.
>>
>>6216401
love the idea, very thematic. i would say that you could use "old pallets" for furniture too, but that would be very pinterest.
also if you finished can you put a doll with a aluminum hat?
>>
I just need to clean up and paint the head, sculpt some shoes and find some weapons and different clothes and I'm done.

Is it possible to sculpt and cast joints? How could you make them fit?
>>
>>6217502
You're not talking about that old millput causes cancer meme are you?

>>6217510
No, there are virtually no easily castable or sculptable materials that will give you working joints. They're simply too weak.

If you have a mill you can mill actual thermoplastics, or if you have a clean room or something you can cast industrial resins, but consumer safe stuff is a joke in terms of durability.

>>
>>6217465
That's sort of what I'm doing. I don't have the space or skill for a full house, so I just have a bunch of dioramas on 13x13 bases so they fit in detolf shelves. Working on a two story one right now and hoping that brass rods are strong enough that I can make it modular and not glue the second floor.

I'm working on a latex outfit for my polynian shamrock, but I can't seem to get the panties/thong to not look like garbage.

I've made about ten pairs at this point, and am open to help as far as the pattern. After I have the one-color set I'll try for more complicated stuff. (Ideally I want a latex maid outfit with frills)

I can't believe I haven't posted this yet...

Test print of Papi/Harpy from hips down. Tried making the torso articulated with 3mm ball-socket joints, and that was a bust. Only so much room in such a tiny body, so I'll probably just do one socket joint in the midsection. Other than that, only issue was the talons not snapping on properly (widening the opening will fix that next print).

>>
>>6219477
Making anything that isn't perfectly symmetrical is a nightmare, but that's the jist of my various attempts. I may just need a different thickness of latex/a sharper knife or scissors.

>>6220652
Legit just latex balloons. I got a variety pack to test sizes and stuff, it's a thin gauge and I wash it/powder it after it's cut. I'm working on testing ways to smooth it out for pattern cutting and applying different solvents to glue pieces for more complicated garments.

Head swap. 1:18 black series stormtrooper body with head from the rogue one release. The neck and ball joints were different sizes so it required some surgery. I think it's a hell of an improvement, though. The rogue trooper has a really accurate sculpt but only 5 points of articulation. I'll probably strip the paint and re-do it all, then add a gloss coat. Then he could pretty much stand in as a mini hot toys.
Just look at how crappy the old helmet was.

>>6222484
That original head sculpt looks horrid. Nice job with the head swap.

You can find them in the insulation section, probably near all the wood.
