Mattel has access to mass retail presence and a shit ton of money. Companies like DCC (which DC owns as their in-house production arm), Mezco, and Mafex aren't likely to wind up on store shelves due to myriad factors, not least of which is the fact that due to company size there's no way for them to produce the volume that Mattel can.

So if you were DC, what would look more appealing to you:

1. An established company with massive production means, a deep financial reserve that can always outbid the competition for contracts while still maintain profit gains, a history of on-time shipments to retail shops that perfectly coincide with media releases, and a lock on getting product on store shelves thanks to business relations and thus ensuring larger returns on product percentage

or

2. Companies that are 1/20th as large as Mattel (or smaller), with limited factory access and production means, an established and well known history of massive and frequent delays on even relatively small batches of figures (in the case of Mezco and DCC), smaller pools of money to lower their bid price to acceptable and competitive levels, and zero experience with establishing relationships between themselves and regional/national buyers representing mass retail stores

Quality means nothing when you know you're already going to sell hundreds of thousands of units per year on shit figures.

You have no idea of how contracts are written and what is expected from them.
The licensor expects a certain amount of units sold every year and the licensee can't meet those goals, they pay the difference and can lose the license.

In the case of Mattel, an entire animated cartoon block all hinged on Mattel's toys selling well. Mattel fucked that up, so not only were the cartoons canceled, but the animated block was cancelled as well.
It's a big blow to DC/WB when their shit gets canceled because of Mattel's incompetence.

I think the only reason Mattel is able to reup so easily is because they're just paying way more money, ontop of any penalties they're hit with. They likely hope that SOMETHING from DC will make it worth their while and give them a nice return on their investment. Unfortunately, the popularity of the movies/cartoons hasn't correlated with an increased interest in their toylines (unlike Marvel's/Hasbro's), so it obviously rests on Mattel's laurels... which is to say, their budget shit that looks like bootlegs.

Thanks to my awesome LCS owner, I managed to snag the DC films Superman figure for 25 bucks today. It's a pretty solid figure, I honestly have no huge complaints. The arms are a little short and they don't lay as close to the body as I would like . One of the leg joints popped out which scared the shit out of me, but it went right back in so no big deal. IMO this is a damn sight better then the Icons Superman, but I would hope so for what they're charging for it.

I would kill for a Dean Cain or Tyler Hoechlin Superman to go with these...

Darkseid and Grail look pretty nice. Much better than the previous DCC Darkseid (I always hated that one, looked more like a dumb giant stone troll than the New God of Tyranny). I've been alternating between the DCU BAF and the DCM nu52. I'm one of the few that actually likes the DCM figure.

Does anyone here have the Level 3 Spruekits Batman figure? I've been thinking on getting one to build on these cold winter nights.

I can find it for relatively cheap, ($30) and I like the idea of a nice super articulated AC bats that stands over 9in. However, I'm worried about the plastic quality & durability. Is it a solid figure? Or is it like most models with really cheap plastic that'll smash into a million pieces if it takes a shelf dive.

If you can tell me anything else, good or bad, about level 3 Bats, that would be great. The reviews I've seen on Youtube & misc. blogs don't get into detail and just say, "Yeah, it's a nice figure. U should get it." I hate bland reviews like that.

Got the VTOL Cycle at last. The box had no instruction sheet but since I got it for like 10 dollars, I didn't bother looking too hard into it. Plus the only sticker on the thing is the shield logo.

the joints on mine where the thighs meet the hips are pretty lose, but everything else is firm. The articulation is nice and versatile.
I really like the diecast for the chest piece. The head sculpt is decent, but everything else is sculpted well. The cape is really big and throws the balance off, but you don't need to have him wearing the extra cape parts, just the middle piece. He also looks really good without a cape and the alt head, as a quasi batman beyond

This Superman from DC collectibles really surprised me. It looks and feels like a Japanese figure. The articulation is on par with SH. And the cape is high quality. It comes with a flight stand...idk I hope they can keep it up. This is what I thought the Mafex should have been.

This baffles me. The Mattel figure strangely has the best proportions (in line with a "heroic" build). The DCC figure looks like a woman with prosthetics that are supposed to make her look like a muscular man. The MAFEX looks like a weak funhouse mirror.

I kind of want that DCC Cavill Eradicator. It looks cool but the lack of sunglasses bothers me.
Hope they branch out to other characters with this articulation scheme.

I thought blue beetle is pretty good despite the lack of head articulation. Don't know about deadman, but batman is decent. The main problem is the torso and core articulation is stiff, and they have weird proportions. Harley is really good though
