For those unfamiliar, "Plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model." If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.

Secret Santa

It's that time of year again. Just look at the form and fill it out. Signups last until December 1st, pairs go out in the days after that.

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdprprkU_4UBARdot0ASSmoUoxghk9bOPVuRrvZKfghAZQRbg/viewform?c=0&w=1

A few things:
-Use an active email, I don't want to be hounding you and then have to repair someone.
-Use your full address, I don't know every damn city and zip code in the US.

A new option, Cards Only. If you pick this you're assumed to be willing to ship international (it's a card after all). It doesn't have to be a handmade card, just something nice. Of course handmade is nicest, but not everyone has the skills for it.

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdprprkU_4UBARdot0ASSmoUoxghk9bOPVuRrvZKfghAZQRbg/viewform?c=0&w=1

As always, I'm available here, on IRC, or at [email protected].

I already bring shame to my family, but I plan on making it as spiffy as fuck. Going to give panel lining a shot with it even. Yes, I'm an oob snapshit, I know I am a monster.
>>
>>6034051
Adorable!
>>
>>6033979

I was loving Ippei Gyoubu's designs on the first season, picking up more kits than I had thought I would and I was even picking up G-Reco stuff just because of his designs without having watching the anime. So far, Season 2 has yet to pop up any new mechs that I really need an HG of...
>>
>>6034059

I think you'll enjoy it, if you haven't tried making it nicer than oob. Removing the nub marks... Sanding surfaces so it has that nice matte surface... little touches go towards making it look like it's a toy more expensive that it actually is.

If anything, that's the main reason to buy model kits than just buying a RD of your fav mechs. I got into gunpla pretty much because my fav designs rarely ever get RDs.
>>
>>6034060
It really is. The only other Gunpla she purchased for me was an AG Ghiraga. which was displayed proudly on my desk until somehow I lost the green chest cap/gem.

>>6034063
Yep, I'm obsessive compulsive with nub removal and sanding down any leftover nub while trying to keep things flush and the plastic from being discolored. I actually plan on going back to my first two gunpla (Kampfer and Gouf Custom) to clean up nubs since I have proper tools now. I also buy models for that reason, I mean the building and love put into them make them more than just a toy to me.
>>
so I'm not an expert gunpla builder, I basically just remove nub marks and panel line... just got into a RG Zaku II, I notice the panel lining are a lot narrower and more shallow than what I'm used to with other HG size kits. I do like that the lines are finer, it gives that additional "realistic" feeling of it being a scaled down, giant machine but am having trouble getting the lines to stay.

I usually use a water based marker, and just wipe off the excess/mistakes and that works well enough for me so far with the HG, I don't ever scratch off or wipe off the lines I don't intend to but am having trouble with the RG.

Any tips on maybe alt methods or extra steps I should take with the RG Zaku II?
>>
>>6034087
don't wipe so hard? I never have problems wiping off excess and getting the line to stay unless i'm rubbing the shit out of it
>>
>>6034091

in other HGs, when I handle them, the lines don't go away. In the case of the RG, even when just handling them, the lines go away a bit too much for my liking.

So I finally got my compressor, which I ordered from Sealmodel via sea because they had the best price (I don't live in the US and getting a good compressor here costs a fuckton).
The model is a TC-610H. I just got it today and the compressor itself looks fine, but it came with the hose in the picture instead of the "3M braided hose" in the product description.

Does the hose matter? Should I complain, or just stick with this one?
>>
>>6034134

depends how far away you are from the compressor I guess. Also, how easy is it to kink the line? Like does it fold over easily? You don't really want that, the braided cables are harder to pinch basically
>>
>>6034134

my boy, that is a 3m hose
>>
>>6034134
well the braided hose is definitely more expensive
>>
>>6034150
So it doesn't matter as long as I don't pinch it? That shouldn't be a problem.

>>6034154
But not a braided one, as far as I can tell.

Also, a followup question about setting pressure. I hooked up my airbrush and set the pressure to, say, 30 psi to test it out. The compressor then pressurises the tank and after a while it stops. So far so good.
But when I started spraying with my brush (just spraying air to test it out), the pressure on the gauge dropped immediately dropped (by about 5 psi). When I stopped spraying, the pressure went back up to 30, without the tank re-pressurising. I guess this makes sense that the pressure would be lower while you were actively spraying, but I'm not sure if this is actually supposed to happen. Is it okay, or is there something wrong with the compressor/connections?
If it's supposed to happen, then I have a question regarding pressure setting. When people say they spray at a given pressure, say 20 psi, do they mean that they set the tank to 20 psi, or is 20 psi what actually shows while they are pressing down on the brush?

You need to read books/watch videos about airbrushing. This is not something you can figure out from random replies you get on a West-Indian basket-weaving board.

You set pressure with a trigger fully pressed down so that the air comes out freely.

First time sanding but I'm pretty happy with how it came out. Some of it was fucked and my coarse sanding stick is toast but it was much less stressful/painful then denubbing. Obviously you get a potentially worse looking product but I enjoyed hte process a lot more.

I was thinking... could most of the mechanical/engineering problems with Fumina be solved with some light modding? I'm tempted to get one to see if it can be improved.

What about her head? Would it be possible to swap out her rictus death mask for, say, a FAG face plate?

Making new joints is possible, but the entire body and proportions need work. The head piece is differently sized/shaped than a FAGs, so it would take a lot of work there too. It's mainly the layout of the face that's the problem

No, the face sculpt is pretty bad. That's besides the fact that sculpted anime eyes is a fucking retarded move when the pros (max-figma and waifu resin statue sculptors) have proven that decal eyes are the best.

You could fill in the eyes, sand down the eyelashes and shit, and get some generic anime eye decals for it. That'll probably improve it a decent bit. Just the face though. Of course, you'll need to shape up the face sculpt itself a little bit with a knife, since it's not great anyway.

I'm sure what it is, but this suit design is really bland. When 90% of the early-mid UC suit designs all seem to tie to the RX78-2, this somehow manages to be the most uninspired of the lot and I love most suit designs from that UC period too.

As far as I'm aware the functional difference is that the Mr. Surfacer can be used as both a primer (if thinned) and a filler (for seam lines, etc). Mr. Primer will only work as a primer.

If you like Mr. Surfacer, you'll probably like Mr. Primer. Although I can't speak to how differently it should be thinned or applied.

The sunken part has a really simple fix. Just take the inner part of the face and trim down this one tab that prevents you from sliding the eyes further forward.

You lose the eyebrows doing this though so you need to put a thin piece of styrene across the back of the gaps or use putty or something and then paint them in.

Question: Do Gunpla boxes have any worth if you're already planning to build the kit or have built it already? They're taking up a lot of room and I'd probably only hold onto the ones that have cool printing on them.

>>

I'm... going to say no. To me, their only worth is in providing some sort of makeshift container for parts or completed gunpla figures you want to keep in storage/rotate off your shelf.

Would be happy to be proven wrong though.

I used to save them and all of the runners

Now I put all spare parts in a shoebox sized plastic box, toss the runners and bottom half of the box, keep the manual and the flattened top half of the box

What kind of respirator should I use to avoid dying? I plan on painting mostly with acrylic but would like the option of painting with lacquer and enamel as well. I was trying to pick one based on the information provided in the guide, but my country (Australia) seems to use different classification standards to the ones listed in the guide and Google has yielded no results that correspond obviously with info in the guide.
>>
>>6038059
Its a toss up between both gusion rebake forms for me. Ill know for sure once i finish painting this bastard
>>
>>6038471
I use a 3M 6000 series respirator when I airbrush. The cartridge lasts 6 months and you can replace the cartridge for like $10. It's really comfortable and you can barely smell a thing, even when you're handling thinners.

You'll specifically want "organic vapor" cartridges. That filters out the fumes and particulates.

There's a lot of argument online about if it's necessary if you're painting/airbrushing with acrylics. If it's a non-Tamiya brand, then there shouldn't be any fumes to worry about. According to OSHA/CDC guidelines, a fitted dust mask (think the kind used when you're sanding wood, not the medical kind) SHOULD be ok for sprayed acrylics in a water solution.

But if you're going to be spraying non-acrylics anyways, you might as well get a real respirator.

>>
if I panel line a kit and then decide to paint it and panel line over the paint later will I have any issues?
>>
>>6039134
Just don't apply a horrible deluge of panel liner, and to be extra safe, don't start spraying the model with the same kind of paint as the panel liner was without putting something else in between. So acrylic paint on top of lacquer panel liner is ok, lacquer on top of lacquer calls for an acrylic varnish in between.

Why is hand brushing generally viewed as bad in Gunpla whereas it's okay to do in military kits?
>>
>>6039342
It's perfectly fine for detailing but hard to get an even coat with on large flat surfaces, which a lot of gunpla consist of.
>>
>>6039342

there's a big misconception that because gundamus fight the modeling is similar to armor

it's actually more similar to car painting

even moreso when you consider the higher scale of gunpla means your finishes have to be smoother to look realistic, because there wouldn't be a bunch of surface inconsistency or something like with a 1/35 tank made out of cast steel

So, uhm, it doesn't seem to explicitly say so in the guide, but from the lack of glue being discussed do I infer correctly that Gunpla is just snap-fit?

Those RG kits look interesting. The RX-78-2 is the "original" Gundam, right?
How much skill is required compared to, say, building a 1:72 Revell Leopard 2 A6 tank or Fokker Dr 1 plane?
>>
>>6038603
The handle is from something else. Is it the mace?
>>
>>6039615

if you're not painting it's easy as shit

if you are paintin RG's are pretty tedious and I would rather paint an HG or MG
>>
>>6039615
90% of gunplais snap-fit. It's mostly only 80s kits that occasionally need glue.

Plastic cement is still handy to have though for things like fixing broken parts. It is also used for welding seams to erase the line.
>>
>>6039615
>>6039622

>How much skill is required compared to, say, building a 1:72 Revell Leopard 2 A6 tank or Fokker Dr 1 plane?

Also, gunpla is simple. You remove it from the runners same as a regular model kit and then snap it together like Lego. From there you can mod, paint, and weather it the same as any other model kit. In terms of construction they're easy to build though, even the ones with high parts counts like RGs. Bandai likes to keep them easy so they can lower the age rating and market them to a wider demographic.
>>
>>6039615
As far as Bandai kits are, they're virtually all snap-fit outside of really old kits. Anything made within the last two decades should be good to go out of the box.

Can't speak for any other manufacturers, though most of them shouldn't require much glue either, if that.

Is Barbatos Sixth form the only Barbatos that comes with the wrench?
>>
>>6039342
Three reasons that I can think of: large flat surfaces, ease of painting, and embarrassing pictures.

The flat surface issue has been touched on. Although I think that it's important to mention that it's REALLY hard to get straight lines painted by hand. A lot of miniatures encourage washes to hide small overlaps of color near edges. Gundams have panel lines, but panel lines are clean and straight, which makes for less room for error. If you're masking and then spraying, it's easier to get clean edges and lines.

When you're painting a scale tank (depending on the scale) or a squad of Warhammer miniatures, it's comparable to painting a leg of an MG Gundam, at least in terms of size. You have a lot more ground to cover with a Gundam than with most minis, most of the time with solid colors. It's more efficient time and paintwise to use an airbrush.

Finally, if you look at basically every single "first time handbrushing" Gundam, it looks like shit. It's difficult to get a good flat coat for the whole Gundam when handpainting, no matter what skill level you are. But since handpainting requires the least amount of purchases, it's what new modelers start with. And it looks amateurish. So people who are self-critical look at those models and think "I'm not going to have my model look shitty like that, I'll avoid handbrushing."
>>
>>6039592
I do get it, but that doesn't not mean that buying on amazon would be at a markup, it doesn't matter if amazon themselves is selling it.

>>

That sounds tedious. Either the pieces would be incredibly small, which is always a recipe for disaster for Gunpla, or the part would be molded with a lot of detail, but in a single color, which requires painting.

Also I think the market for that isn't really there. The people who like SD figures already enjoy the price/level of detail they're currently getting.
>>
>>6040384

As a guy who builds a fuck ton of SDs, all I want is better articulation. If Bandai could manage that without fucking up the proportions and just making them look like squat HGs, they'd have a happy and loyal customer for life.
