For those unfamiliar, "Plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model." If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.

Secret Santa

It's that time of year again. Just look at the form and fill it out. Signups last until December 1st, pairs go out in the days after that.

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdprprkU_4UBARdot0ASSmoUoxghk9bOPVuRrvZKfghAZQRbg/viewform?c=0&w=1

A few things:
-Use an active email, I don't want to be hounding you and then have to repair someone.
-Use your full address, I don't know every damn city and zip code in the US.

A new option, Cards Only. If you pick this you're assumed to be willing to ship international (it's a card after all). It doesn't have to be a handmade card, just something nice. Of course handmade is nicest, but not everyone has the skills for it.

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdprprkU_4UBARdot0ASSmoUoxghk9bOPVuRrvZKfghAZQRbg/viewform?c=0&w=1

As always, I'm available here, on IRC, or at [email protected].

You're probably gonna want some of the thicker plastic cement too, since the extra-thin stuff works well for seam line removal, but often evaporates too quick for layering styrene sheets.

The legs on the Ji Dao kit are pretty wide and they don't hamper posing too much. The only things I found off about it are that its too short and the wrist pegs are smaller than the ones found on older frame arms. i had to sand down the wild hands to get them to fit on him.

I'd say get dymo paint i think it's called, helps guide the scriber.

Also, anyone know if sculpting putty can also be used to fill in gaps and recesses in kits? You know what I mean, right? When some pieces aren't just made solid but have lots of open space to save plastic, or something. Not sure how to describe it.
I have sculpting putty and I'm wondering if I can just be cheap instead of buying a whole other set of putty just for filling gaps. Dont' even remember what that type of putty is called.

how bad are the nubs in the MG Sinanju Titanium Finish? would a metallic red gundam marker be enough to mask them?

Still working on this guy. The forehead camera are tricky to paint and im not sure if i feel confident about sealing the seam on the binders. Graze slayer sword needed a face lift so its on the backburner.
>>
>>6041105
you'll honestly be less frustrated buying a regular sinanju and doing a prime-> silver paint -> clear red for better results.

The nubs aren't the worst, but if you're a nitpicker it'll drive you absolutely crazy.
>>
>>6041105
Depends on your cutting technique. If you are careful it shouldnt be too noticeable. Marker will probably end up looking a different shade of red and isnt the best option since it could smudge the finish

Epoxy putty is only useful for sculpting and filling really large gaps. Grab some Tamiya white putty.

I second getting an orange jar of Tamiya cement in addition to the extra thin.

I wouldn't but the Tamiya PS sheets. Evergreen and Plastistruct will be much cheaper.

Also pick up some Tamiya sandpaper: 400, 600, 800, 1000, and finer for polishing.

I'm looking for some good HGs that I can put in my shopping backlog so the next time I go to buy an MG and want to round out the cart a bit more, I already have some shit ready.
How's the G30 RX-78 that comes with the panel line marker? Obviously articulation won't be as good as the revive and the beam saber isn't colored, but it looks aesthetically more pleasing than the revive in my opinion and has some extra shit like the F R E E gundam marker.
Also what are some solid HGs in general?

I have quite a few more I'm eyeing, like the Wing Gundam and Tallgeese. There are a few others I'm eyeing, like the Jagd Doga and Rick Dom. I have Neue Ziel on order, but want the special equipment pack too.

Any Converge collectors here? Any specific recommendations for figures?

Bought my first kit this weekend after realising that you are building cool figures with articulation.

Bought the HG Astaroth (pic related), is there a single thing I should really take to heart?

My background is building warhammer and stuff so I got cutters, exacto knives, diamond files and the likes. Might pickup some fine sanding paper as well. Wasn't planning on painting it since I already got my warhams to stratch that itch. How hard is panel linining? Got very shaky hands which is why i avoid freehanding on my warhammer as well.
>>
>>6041699
The hardest part in building gunpla is finding the time.

Everything else can be practiced to perfection. And you dont need to be perfect right from the get-go.

Black and blue is nice and all but what about magenta panel lines?
>>
>>6041545
>Obviously articulation won't be as good as the revive
Actually the G30 is about as good as the Revive. The G30 is sorta a precursor to the Revive since it has the ball joint shoulders like the Revive, and it has the usual 00-style peg legs on a swiveling mount. The only real downside of the G30th are the lack of actual beam sabers, which doesn't really matter since you should have extra beam sabers. The upsides: The amount of panel lines that help bring out detail and of course the only reason you should buy this kit, the Gundam Hammer.

I know people complain a lot about the HG G-Self, but what exactly is wrong with it? Is it a matter of wonky proportions/poor engineering, or is it just the polarizing nature of the Reconguista designs? And in a similar vein, did the G-Self included with the Perfect Pack fix any of these issues?
>>
>>6042270
fuckton of stickers
extremely lazy articulation, really subpar compared to other kits that came out during that time
>>
>>6042275
>fuckton of stickers
>being a snapfag
>>
>>6042270
Subpart articulation once you fully assemble it and the armor blocks the joint range, and it has a fuckton of stickers. Keeped in mind it was released around the same time as the Build burning which has crazy good articulation and was very color accurate out of the box so it just seemed worse by comparison.
>>
>>6042307
Most gunpla builders are snap fags. A kit being sticker heavy affects how popular it will be among most builders.
>>
>>6042317
>Most gunpla builders are snap fags.
Maybe after the casual pandering done by Build Fighters, sure.
>>
>>6041699

you're going to enjoy it, this is an easy kit to build. Stickers are tiny but reasonably easy to apply. Fun gimmicks, great articulation and a cool weapon. I'd recommend sanding the white and blue parts though to make it look that much nicer.
>>
>>6042318

YES.

Yes. Bandai routinely throws a bunch of old kits back into production every run they do, and in the next run a bunch of older hguc and G gundam kits are getting more kits made. Amiami just threw them up for preorder.

For the cheap ones, just get one of those 10 dollar 'tool sets'

so, I bought my first kit ever about a month ago. The appeal took hold really quick and I've got quite a few since. recently I decided to make the move go real grade. my zaku II was fine, but the GPO1FB's core fighter was a pain in the dick and the thing is really fragile. I had to use a bit of glue.

tl:dr, I guess my question is, are all the real grades a pain? should I just move on to the master grades?

pic related, it's what I've done so far.

I'll sure try! like I said, it's a month old hobby, I just found out about using a micron pen to fill in cracks. painting scares me a bit. I was kicking around the idea of using paint and sand paper for a weathered look

it's kind of ironic. I'm totally comfortable with painting a car or working on an engine, but these tiny kits make me so cautious.

As the guy running the /m/ groupbuilds, people really liked how the first /m/ one in a while turned out, so I guess there was enough clamor for a second one. Going by a 2-month build time and 1-month break in between builds, the next one should be in March and allow for more painters. I'm a spraycan man myself, but I might give a shot at handpainting a Geirail.

The katana feels a bit out of place. Those big, chunky shoulders give off a "brute force" sort of vibe, so some sort of club or blunt weapon might fit better. Also, if you're gonna make something with Orbital Frame legs, you may as well go all-out and give it a cockpit.

Both the 1/144 and 1/100 kits are pretty solid - many of the 1/144s have full frames, which is a nice touch. If you're a snapfag, the only ones I'd really avoid are the 1/144 Gusion Rebakes, as they have a ton of stickers that I imagine would be really annoying to apply (I just painted mine). It's likely going to be a small one, probably near the size of a Bandai SD (look at that hollow topknot, and a low-$20-something price tag)

They added English text to the packaging and manuals of the Danball Senki kits when Bandai Asia ran it like 2 years back. I would say those are more for the SEA audience though.

Its the gunpla scratchbuilding manual by the look of it. Or it could be that doujin where the guy is only interested in gunpla so his girlfriend dresses up like gp01. I didn't actually check the link.

Well shit, that means i have to color it Char red then.

When did those DBZ Figure-rise kits come out, July-ish? I think they were the first to have the extra English text, and then Bandai figured that they may as well do it for Gunpla as well.

Might not be a big chance of this, but does anyone here have experience with the pictured model? Amazon has mostly decent reviews, and I loved the show as a teen, so I have been itching to go out of my normal Gundam niche, and give Big O a try.

Hmm....
>>
>>6041545
It was my first kit. I bought it for the gundam marker.
It's a really simple build that didn't take very long. It's a very basic RX-78, and mine looks like complete ass compared to other HG's I've built.

I just finished up a Mk. II A.E.U.G. that was a good HG. Cheap too.

God dammit those are beam weapons aren't they?
>>
>>6045778
They said it time and time again that there will be no beam weapons, my bet is one of them is either a rail or gauss weaponry.
>>
>>6045778
They've said numerous times that this series does not have beams and that the tech for them doesn't exist in the setting and never did. There just happen to be guns that look like beam rifles but turn out to shoot physical rounds.

Are these good ones?
>>
>>6045981
Totally depends on if you like those ones or not, none of them are really better than the others. It's a shame they come with little adapter parts like the first ones, those ones mattered which ones you got more.
>>
>>6045460

Fuck, man... I don't know why, but I love shino's color schemes. I'm tempted to get all three of his hideous fucking suits... I don't have room for that shit, dudes.

It doesn't quite live up to the way Justice and Infinite Justice do it, but it's fairly nice if this is real.

I'd prefer some yellow "claw" bits on the feet rather than those things that just end awkwardly above the "toes". It's not really a throw-back to Epyon, it just came to mind.

Hopefully the top side of the shields looks nice. The legs could use some more texture as well compared to the top half.

I got one coming up in April with some fucking reason a deadline for the entry forms like next week or so (even though forms got made today) and all of it seems like its a group of friends wanting to show off to other people

I have the converge Zeta Hummingbird. It's super cool. I have it on my desk because it's a good size for that sort of thing. I actually just ordered a Deep Striker today.

The one thing I really dislike is that the figures sell for roughly $10-15 on ebay, but they're like 500 yen in Japan. I picked up my Hummingbird from a hobby shop in Japan last month for about 1800 yen, but it's like $40 on ebay. It makes me want to buy them less knowing that I'm being price gouged.

Maybe all involved in the painted vs OOB argument can simply agree to disagree and focus on the parts of the hobby they enjoy? I love a good debate as much as anyone else, but this is just insults and dickishness. /toy/ and this general tends to be really chill, and we should all do our part to try and keep it that way.

Finally done with HGUC Qubeley. Good build overall.
Shoulders, eyes, and the dots on the forearms were handpainted. The rest is unpainted. Word of warning: I tried to airbrush Vallejo polyurethane matte varnish on this. If you spray it unthinned, it looks good but completely clogs up the airbrush in seconds (Iwata HP-CS). Thinned, it's very easy to airbrush but it doesn't look as nice, and it makes it peel at the slightest touch even days later. If you look closely you can see places where it's begun to peel. I ended up just giving the entire model another short spray from a can of Tamiya flat to hopefully protect it, and I'm going to avoid handling it much.
