I was obsessed with box art as a kid. Made every character seem interesting. I clipped out the package art, the bio, and instructions and collected those. I think part of the reason I dropped out during Beast Machines is seeing these cool paintings replaced by Cheetor's ugly CGI mug. I was happy to see Armada bring it back, but I miss the classic G1/BW painted style.

My favorite is Skyshadow, who starred in a lot of my stories.

I'm really fond of G1 Optimus' toy, so I kinda like it being such a literal representation of course, it got better later on, with some exceptions.keep in mind a lot of this art precedes the cartoon designs

Back that early on all they had to go on was the toys themselves. What you're seeing is an American artists rendition of a Japanese designed toy he had as a reference.

US artists had been drawing Conan's and military dudes for a while though.

Japanese space robots were something pretty antithetical to US artists then, which is probably everything came out looking really weird.
>>
>>6019490
Yeah, it must have been hard giving the characters dynamic poses while also staying true to the chunky, disproportionate toy designs.

The Diaclone and Microchange designers were definitely trying more to make silly robots than proper humanoids.

That Jazz looks cool and I'm willing to say that a lot of the artwork with handful of characters looks pretty good. It's a shame that they couldn't pull it together sooner because I loved the 80's color selection.

Repugnus was one of my favorites, both in box art and as an actual toy. I hope he somehow gets a Deluxe, but the forecast isn't looking so hot. Razorclaw is another one who got some fairly nice box art though.

>>6019652
>I wonder if they realize they might be spending more in plastic churning out retools no one wants than just sucking it up and making unique molds for each character.
What do you mean? Head retools cost way less than brand-new figures primarily because of how expensive metal parts molds are.
>>
>>6019655

Well, all those Ironhides sitting on the shelves cost them money in plastic, new heads, paint, boxes, shipping, etc.

I don't know anything about costs, but I'd assume all of that wasted cash just to shelfwarm forever could be better spent on churning out a new mold and character that would actually sell, right?
>>
>>6019657
The shops already paid for the stock. Hasbro doesn't give a shit as long as the retailers buy it.

Amazing bit is, just a few days ago there was the rest of the wave (Mirage, Prowl, Sunstreaker) and now it's just nothing but Ironhides.
>>
>>6019659

Weird. Then again, I do own that wave because I got into collecting again only with CW and I needed some cheap CHUG's for the G1 crew. Ironhide honestly ain't a bad toy. Only one I'd call bad was Sunstreaker, his plastic just feels shitty and it's not the right color.

In defense of these, they turned a design for an exoskeleton van into a human, so, they were bound to suck, imagine making a factory robotic arm into a fully functional character, WITHOUT ability to change the toy, sire, you can make a massive centipedal robot, minesweeper and human out of the concept, but the toy is still going to be one or two legs of the design.

Ok, lets start some speculation on mp megatron 2.0, I am really curious as to what mode he's packed as, here are the box dimensions according to takara tomy mall listings.

>W300×H350×D140mm

Where's mp10's was

>W350×H350×D160mm

Slightly smaller than mp10 but within the same ballpack, I suspect he's in robot mode as they could of cut down alot of size if he was in gun mode.

Another fact

>Uses 2 LR44 batteries
I'd love it if his eyes light up but good chance (look at the gun barrel) it'll just have his gunscope light up much like mp05 did.

Anyone else got anything?

>>6019738
Well, looking at it again he has the "spare tire" hanging off the back, could be a very early prototype, who knows
>>

Wish that logic worked in australia, take the mp05 incidents.

He's packed as a robot, an ugly robot but one none the less, customs seized multiple copies, even the gold reissue, many simply got destroyed, how did they know, did they look at the box?

Many who successfully applied for legal ownership reported the shipping boxes they came in were still sealed, somehow they recognized the silhouette via xrays, not sure how it works in america but if someone knows what a megatron looks like they may pull the breaks.

>>
>>6019759
Not all states in Australia have restrictions, you only just need to fill a form in some and off ya go, that's only if they DO catch it.

And the simple fact is, for the rest of the world, customs don't check "everything", how else do criminals get their weapons drugs and other contraband?

The fact is everyone here *can* have a mp36, legally or not, they can still have him and he will be glorious

>>6019739
It's packed in robot mode because the figure is complex and the robot mode is the "unfolded" mode, the one in which workers have acces to most parts thus the one that's being assembled into. They won't ask workers to take an additionnal 10 minutes to transform every figure.

Usually with the toys, specifically hasbro versions they remain in bot mode where they are most recognizable, from key memory very few movie toys even in takara's movie advanced line were in bot mode, mainly because window box displays showing the product.

Takara legends differ in this regard of course, now back to the topic, perhaps its several factors for mp36, safety, retail responsibilities and space conservation.

The safety of a figure is paramount, in robot they can better distribute knocks and bumps as their joints are flexing, I worried with mp mp hasbro seekers being in jet mode because their nose cones extend to the end of the packaging, but if the bot mode is compact enough it could also "brace" the figure which is where most mp cars lie, as for retail responsibilities there is a CHANCE even japanese domestic customs may pull a red flag if they see a gun on the scanner, or even if some punk rips it out of a box somehow and robs the place, then space conservation which when you compare hasbro and takara differ, hasbro went to bot mode on their cars as an excuse to use a bigger box to help warrant a higher price, takara aimed to keep it slimmer.

There is also another simpler explanation, the box size dimensions>>6019739

See how similar to mp10, could be an excuse to have them sit side by side, he could even be packaged almost the same way aside from the gunstock and silencer replacing the trailer, meaning gun or robot is redundant, though being in bot could cause retailers less hassle, regardless of region.

That said if he's in gun mode I'll be shocked, yes he's complex, but mp's aren't made to infuriate people, fun and intuitive they have been from mp10 onwards, mp36 just has a shitload of folding panels

>>6019948
Making the front of a car have a grill is nothing like making wheeles becoming legs. What you are calling "reshells" (most of them share molding of what they are based from. You know this if you owned them) don't require them to go back to the drawling board and figure out a new transformation for. Considering that team has two headed beast members it would demand some of those CW molds to be retooled to the point of just making a new mold which like the other anon said was cost they wouldn't spend.

Highbrow had an entire new cockpit added on just for his mold alone. If Hasbro were more than willing to go that far with retooling they'd certainly do the same with the hypothetical Terrorcons.
>>

How do Punch and Doubledealer convince others when doing infiltration if they have only 3 modes instead of having both robot and altmode for both factions?
>>

Pretty sure they mentioned that "my Autobot/Decepticon counterpart is nearby (real nearby)", so maybe it's like the Autobot/Decepticon clones, except there's one for each faction.

Why were the characters' art so terrible? Was Hasbro so cheap that they hire people that would half ass the art because of the difficulty in creating it? I mean it wouldn't have been too hard to do some basic framework for accurate design before painting it in.
>>
>>6020218

Because they literally had no experience with anything Japanese before. Japanese animation wasn't really a "thing" in the West beyond a few shows, no one drew in that style or really grew up with that kind of style. And in a lot of cases all they had to work with was just the toys themselves for a reference.

It's a really interesting take on everything though.
>>
>>6019963

I don't recall anyone saying they got more budget. In fact, it's pretty obvious when they're trying to SAVE their meager budget. Look at Blurr and Scourge. Barely a touch of paint. Meanwhile Brainstorm has more paint and colors of plastic on him than both of those combined.

Or Weirdwolf, who has plastic-within-plastic, paint, the whole shebang.
>>
>>6019871
>Usually with the toys, specifically hasbro versions they remain in bot mode where they are most recognizable, from key memory very few movie toys even in takara's movie advanced line were in bot mode, mainly because window box displays showing the product.
>perhaps its several factors for mp36, safety, retail responsibilities and space conservation.
About 95% of the toys you're talking about are simple enough to be assembled in any mode and/or to be transfomed before getting packed. Also MPs are collector items. They don't have to comply the same safety criterias toys do.

If MP-36 was a "simple toy" like Sideswipe, I'd have no doubt that they would simply pack it in its most compact mode but seeing how crazy the engineering seems to be, they won't even try. I mean even MP-10, which is definitely more complex than the carbots but probably a lot less than Meg, got packed in robot mode even though its vehicle mode is way more compact.

>>
>>6020218
>I mean it wouldn't have been too hard to do some basic framework for accurate design before painting it in.

The model sheets that helped define the characters(and how we see them now) didn't exist when this art was being made. Artists probably got just an early proto of the toy, and likely didn't want to go too off-model from it, since they where selling the toy, not the animated version.

>Also RID 2001 was shit and a sign that
It was a parody of that. Car Robots is a comedy. The dub missed that.

For fucks sake Gigatron calls his faction the Destrongers because they're stronger than normal Destrons (they clearly aren't)
>>
>>6020109
Neither of those toys are from Victory

A lot of that art IS actually Japanese though. Some of the art like Wheeljack and I think Hound come from Diaclone packaging. The bad US art is often imitating that art style.
>>
>>6020683
The dub still clearly plays it up as a comedy. Things like the Destronger pun would be lost anyway since the term destron hadn't been used in the US.

The RID was okay, great VAs in it, the script was good but the voice direction was off to me, everyone kind of falls into typical voice types.

So I'm a seeker fag, aiming for all mp seekers.

My problem is collection is kinda like pic related where its mismatched, I have the entire hasbro crew and the takara coneheads, with the reissue of the takara starscream should I start over?

Acidstorm would be fine considering takara just got him with a re-labeled box, but would there be a chance of a reissue of sunstorm, or am I better off saving cost and just waiting for a hasbro skywarp at this point?

Pretty much more cohesive collection or save money?

I absolutely love Takara's Thundercracker. I typically prefer a darker blue on TC, but the shade on MP-11T is just so pleasant. I think my preference for it has more to do with the cleaner deco and especially the silver paint as opposed to the unpainted gray on most other releases of the mold. The unpainted gray on most MPs, Hasbro or Takara is always so cheap-looking. Probably why I'll never buy Starscream or Grimlock.

>>6020804

>>
>>6020938
Usually. You can check youtube videos for comparisons. Rocket Punch Army does some great side-by-sides, and there are usually videos that show you the best fixes for whatever little QC issues they might have.

You're gonna pay through the nose for an official MP Smokescreen by now, and I recall the KO being one of the better ones. It's probably a decent buy.
>>
>>6020909
>>6020938
well, previous posters aside telling you that it's advertised as a KO, ebay is usually pretty safe.

Anyone that knows what they're doing will very clearly advertise that it's either official or a KO. Nobody tries to scam with KOs on ebay because ebay always takes the buyers sides in disputes such as those.

Occasionally you might have private sellers that genuinely don't realize that they have a KO and advertise it as official, but in situations like those it's usually pretty easy to get a refund or return it anyway because ebay loves to fuck sellers in disputes.

KOs overall are pretty alright. They typically have slight tolerance issues like excess flashing, peg holes that are too tight and so on which is all easily fixable. Sometimes tampos or paint apps might be sloppy but for the most part they're decent enough quality. KOs lately have been made in increasingly higher quality and nowadays at the end of the day you're really just buying the same product as official, only it says "Takasa" instead of "Takara"
>>
>>6020947

Cheers Anon picking me up that and a Sideswipe. I realise now that I'll pay big bucks for most other stuff.

All of them are good molds hampered by varying QC issues.

Skullcruncher's typical QC issues are loose thigh swivels and loose hips, fixable with futureshine.

Weirdwolf's back cockpit hinge can just up and break. Can't be fixed really, and it's a straight up QC issue. You'll either have it or won't.

Sentinel/Astrotrain has some potentially loose joints, again, futureshine should fix. Both have a SUPER FUCKING TIGHT headmaster connection port though, and the only way to deal with that is to turn the headmaster's head so it's face is facing the face on it's back. Otherwise you might end up breaking something, and your first time pulling the head off them is going to scare the shit out of you.

Soundwave has a gold paint rubbing off issue, Blaster has no real issues except for possibly his base mode fold out gun being a bit floppy.

Scourge and Highbrow have floppy heads due to their head port design. This isn't a QC issue but an actual design flaw, but you really won't notice it when they're posed.

Mindwipe, Brainstorm, Blurr, Chromedome, Hardhead, have no QC issues I know of.
>>
>>6020995

>Computron showing up ant TJmax and Marshals

Fucking hell, I just got one at Amazon for 64.
>>
>>6021010
That's sort of what I ended up doing.

I say "sort of" because the headmaster port is so tight if you put him in the proper way that I thought it wasn't supposed to go in that way, so I turned it around and it went fine. It wasn't until I looked at the instructions more closely that I realized it is supposed to go in face facing backwards (and that doing that made it floppy anyway)

I'm a little concerned about paint rub on Duro's face when doing that but it's not like I see it that much anyway.
>>
>>6021021

Thats probably why most of the TM lil' bot heads aren't painted. That shit is going to rub off with time, and nothing is going to prevent it.
>>

That report's title is misleading. Only TJ Maxx actually had the Computron sighting.

>>

Completely random. You could have one Menasor in one store, or four of them in another.
>>
>>6020929

I picked up two of each of the '87 Headmaster remakes and a Blaster. Peoples' complains about the quality control are legit -- my Skullcruncher has really loose upper leg cuts and my Mindwipe has really loose ankle joints, and some people have had some breakage issues -- but overall, I think they're great. They're instantly recognizable as updates of the '87 figures, they're fun to pose and play with so long a you're careful with them, and they look awesome all on display together. Mindwipe's my least favorite (because of the loose ankles, his soft plastic parts, and his bat mode, which to me looks a little wonky), but I'd still recommend him. Brainstorm and Blaster are my favorites, to me they're both 10/10 Transformers.
