For those unfamiliar, "Plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model." If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.

If anyone is wondering what "shit supplies" are, it's that basic Testor's enamel and brush set, sandpaper, and no glue. I'm going to leave this up until Saturday or so and then we'll dig further.
Secret Santa
It's that time of year again. Just look at the form and fill it out. Signups last until December 1st, pairs go out in the days after that.

A few things:
-Use an active email, I don't want to be hounding you and then have to repair someone.
-Use your full address, I don't know every damn city and zip code in the US.
A new option, Cards Only. If you pick this you're assumed to be willing to ship international (it's a card after all). It doesn't have to be a handmade card, just something nice. Of course handmade is nicest, but not everyone has the skills for it.

Oh I know its a DM kit, got a quote open with a taobao middleman myself.
Was wondering where would be selling for $90 with delivery
>>6001851
>>6001833
Seamonkeyfag + local distro buying in bulk.
Why do I love Zakus so much, I feel like they are a perfect grunt type suit.
Am I a basic builder?

>>6001877
probably because you have excellent taste.

I'm also a total Wehraboo when it comes to military hardware.
This Zaku has been catchy my eye lately. It's an FZ it says but I can't find info on that Wehrmacht helmet it's got.
>>6001877
Nah. Zeonic grunts tend to be more interesting visually, at least to me.
>>6001902
THat helmet is literally the helmet that the command-type/B-type FZ uses.
>>6001908
>>6001902
And yes, I believe that the HGUC does, in fact, come with it.
So, I fucked up.
A while back I went to a hobby shop out of town and bought some kits and a tamiya brand topcoat to see the difference between what I have available locally. Looks like I grabbed gloss instead of matte and all I have left to topcoat next are a Gouf and Hy-Gogg which don't really seem like the shiny types. I got an MG Kampfer, but I was saving a "wet look" for that to see how it works.
>>6001877
>Why do I love Zakus so much, I feel like they are a perfect grunt type suit.
THAT'S NO LEO BOY, NO LEO!!!
>>6001917
Huh, so you are snapshit...
>>6001920
Of course it's War in the Pocket, that first image was the old 1/144's box. The white ones are the Valkyrie Team or something like that's colors, evidently from The Plot To Assassinate Gihren.
Also 0083 had white Zakus, albeit hijacked by the Federation.
>>6001923
>Huh, so you are snapshit...
No, I just like Leos...
How would someone achieve a similar effect to the Hi Nu Ka's waterslides for the funnels? eg The purple gradient fade thing using spraycans?

>>6001917
>>6001974
That looks REALLY good. That's a conversion kit, right?
>>6001979
>matte over the gloss
I know that, but the issue is just the fact that I didn't buy the Tamiya matte in the first place. Gonna think of a means for this gloss as a final coat so I can see how it fares either way.
>>6001978
Yeah, grabbed one of the original conversions off taobao a while back, but you can get decent recasts of it from SHstudio and a couple of other places
>>6001979
>You might want some finer grit sand paper as well (600-1000)
A set of Jeweler/Needle files are also good for getting the majority of a nub filed down.
>>6001997
Someone on a FB gunpla group is doing that kit. He claims it's a bad mold. Is that just an excuse for being shitty at it?
>>6002013
I would still mask off the parts you don't want painted, dude, but maybe.
>>6002008
bad recast I'd wager.
>>6002016
Of course. Well, I'll go stop by at Bunnings on the way home from work and get some sponges and try it out with some cardboard.
I heard someone say that Tamiya glue, the one with the brush will fill in cracks and seams. Is this legit?
>>6002013
Hold out a piece of cardboard above the piece you want to have a gradient and spray. Should give you a soft edge.
>>6002033
If you're talking about their plastic cement, it won't fill seams, but it will melt the plastic it's applied so that the seam is either reduced to eliminated
>>6002033
More accurately you melt the plastic edges so that when you press the pieces together they fuse into a single solid piece
>>6002033
It'll weld the seams together, eg melt both sides so they fuse. You have to apply a generous amount that they ooze out and properly fuse the whole thing together.
You can technically use it to fill in the gaps as well, similar to how you use putty, but there's the melting plastic thing to consider, so dont just lather it on like a madman.
There's plenty of tutorials on Youtube. Just watch a few of those.
>>6002124
If anything you'll be doing more sanding
>>6002126
Maybe stupid question but how does that work?
>>6002169
The plastic melts and can ooze out. You have to sand it smooth once it's dried and hardened
I think I didn't wait long enough to play with my guy, but here's a kit I recently topcoated.

Maybe. What you want to get if you want to try scratch building is some polystyrene sheets (probably around 0.5mm thick, depending on what you want to do), epoxy putty, and plastic cement (if you don't have that already). Of course, you'll also need to have painting supplies.

Does anyone else have the issue of having small stickers fly off when trying to get them off the sheet?
I typically cut them down on the sheet first and use the point of a #11 xacto knife to transfer them. However occassionally I'll go to lift a piece up and instead it slightly curls and shoots off. Luckily most RG kits have extras of these small decals.

I was looking at getting a D-Style Alicia Unsung would you guys say that's a reasonable model for a beginner?
Also i noticed most things (other than the SDs) tend to make their models 1/72 scale which seems to mean 15-25 cms tall, are there any keywords to use to find shit smaller than that? Something like 3-4 inches tall?

>>6002869

First round of assembly done. Time to start pulling it apart and start chasing down the seam lines before priming.
I have too many kits in my backlog and can't decide on what to build first.
Suggestions?
>>6003255
I can't tell you what to build next, but save the Nu and Nightingale for last, that way you can pose them having a cool fight as you build the other.
Sources tell me we're getting an MG Bearguy San for this year's MG BF release.
It's going to be based off of the old Acguy though, so don't expect too much.
>>6003255
Two words: Kit. Bash.
Build all of the things at once.
>>6003255
No Hi-Nu to properly fight the Nightingale? Solid tastes though. Guncannon or Bearguy first, Cannon Jesta after.
>>6003264
meh.
I'd love an MG try burning. That would be awesome.
>>6002837
The only 1/72 mecha models are Max Factory's Dougram kits >>6002500 Are you perhaps referring to seeing traditional models (auto, armor, aircraft) being in that scale? It's a fairly common traditional model scale.
Plus, scale is a relative relation, its only bearing on the size of the kit is the size of the original [fictional] character or machine.
Again, see >>6002500 Although the Roundfacer is at the largest scale of the three models (1/72) the kit itself is between 1/144- and 1/100-scale mobile suits in size. This is because actual [fictional] combat armors are tiny, averaging 10 meters tall, while UC-era mobile suits are nearly twice that (~18m).
>>6003362
zoids HMM are 1/72 IIRC
>>6003374
Oh right! Koto's not been as active with them as they used to so I forgot about them, thanks.
>>6003264
MG line is indeed dead.
>>6003264
I would say doubt, but then I remembered that the Build Mk. II used the 9 year old Mk. II 2.0 frame.
Mk. II 2.0 is a nice kit, but that extra 20 dollars for a mediocre booster really doesn't sound worth it.

The bolden arms joints are actually too big to look proportional on old wing 1/144. The better option is to pick up something like a crossbone and strip it for joints. It has some of the smallest modern joints you can get.
Every time I see the Grimgerde it just looks so disappointing, like a cheap happy meal toy.

Surprisingly Mr. Weathering Colors do not smell like enamel thinner. They smell like dried fish (I kid you not) and the smell is pretty weak.
The good news is that they probably won't wreck your plastic.

I was talking about Kotobukiya AC kits, they are all listed as 1/72 scale. My favorite mech series is armored core.
I wanted to use a model kit or action figure as a model for a tabletop mech game I'm playing, but unfortunately most kits are too large for this purpose, even if they do look pretty darn cool i don't really want another model "just to look at" as I've already got plenty of those, i wanted something to show off whilst playing the game.
Do you know any good kits/figures of around 4 inches or less tall and not too wide?

its the most popular american basketball colors. no?
>>6004957
Kobe Byarlant is the meme.
>>6004911
Just an unrelated Byarlant question; but how do those huge arms attach to the torso? Does the chest have balljoint connectors or pin connectors?
>>6004970
Same as the modern Revive kits. Balljoint connector except it's really far out from its body
>>6004976
Ah cool! thanks!
>>6004970
The torso pegs into the thick part of the arm with the thrusters, the actual arm joint itself at the far end is a balljoint.
>>6004911
This is my second concept. It's a little past Halloween though.
>>6004973

Of early UC, yes.
anybody know what the gun in the back is from?
I don't think i've seen it on any gundam, frame arms or as any msg weapon.
I guess its possibly scratchbuilt or resin but I feel like i've seen it before. But maybe that is just due to its similarity to hi-nu's gun.
>>6005155
based on the construction im going to say theres a 80% chance this is scratch, especially things like the stock and how much is flat surfaces, use of multiple tube sizes, etc.
>>6005155
Looks like its modded out of the bigass Cross-Gun MSG kit.

I just ordered my first garage kit. Give me the lowdown on resin safety /gpg/
There's plenty of info about respirators, and I didn't have any trouble getting the right kind, but I want to know more about the surrounding environment. I don't have a garage, can I take care of the sanding on my porch? Will that be a hazard for anybody else in the area? (my front porch is shared with my apartment neighbors) How do I clean up the resin dust?
>>6004615
>Do you know any good kits/figures of around 4 inches or less tall and not too wide?
4 inches? Shit, man. That's pretty fuckin' small. Literally the only model kits I can think of that are that small are SD Gundams.
>>6005330
Onestly it isn't as bad as people thinks. Fine powder is mostly risky if you use power tool, but as long as you sand with hand tools just don't sniff it and you are ok.
Working on my G-Arcane.
These beads are TINY.
I put the glue into the hole I made right?
Speaking of Third Party, anyone know where to get a DM Unicorn/what they're going for in terms of pricing (and shipping)?
>>6005381
Beads? Glue? I'm a snapshitter and have no idea what sort of arcane trickery this is.
>>6005324
>Are they still giving those out or are these just late arrivals?
Don't honestly know...
That haul was from HLJ, but they were doing a special two for one deal that expired shortly after, so the next kit I got from them didn't have any.
Then again, I got my first H kit with a Loto, so it just depends I guess.
>>6005367
Thanks senpai, I may end up needing the dremel to drill pin holes though. I'm not sure if a pin vice will do the job.
>>6005289
Why the gay bear?
>>6005420
You could test the resin with an hand drill first, if it looks safe enough, dremel it using the same hole as a guide.
Gaia Gear α HG/MG/RG/PG when? Fucking Bandai!
Making my RG Zaku II kit I bought a year ago, but I'm already fucking up. I've completed both boots, but my bigger source of frustration has been nubs. The majority of this build I'm focusing on nubs, but either I seem to shave off too much with the X-acto and dig into the plastic by accident, leaving little shave marks, scratches, or chunks of plastic missing, or I end up going too light and getting a faint little square-shape of where the nub used to be despite the surface being flat. How do I find a happy medium? How much snipped plastic should I leave? I leave a quarter inch or so and it ends up real annoying for the thicker runner pieces that I have to almost saw through.

Won myself an MG Exia Dark Matter from my local barcade. What's the best panel line color for hot pink?
>>6005613
Probably a light or warm grey of some kind.
>>6001782
How many submissions have you got now gelgoog?
>>6005613
How'd you win it, anon? It's interesting that a barcade would have anything like that in the first place.
>>6005613
hot pink? id say black
>>6005638
I'm not really sure to classify it as a barcade (though there is a bar). It's kind of an all-in-one thing with bowling, karaoke, arcade, sports bar, pool, and other stuff.
Anyhoo, I won it with prize tickets (I'm a coin pusher addict). Aside from the usual arcade prize fare, they tend to carry weeab-friendly prizes, like S.H.Figuarts figures, One Piece ship kits, Gunpla, Play Arts, and plushes. So far, I've gotten an HG Grimoire, RG Exia, RG 00, MG Sengoku Astray, and a Figuarts Zero from there. I've also won an HG Nobell from one of their claw games.
>>6005645
Sounds like a pretty cool place.
>>6005663
Round 1 in SoCal. There's 6 of them in Cali, and they're starting to open up in other states. They got a lot of Japanese arcade games too; it's great if you're into music games.
>>6005674
I was Cali was smaller so shit like that would be closer. The closest one to me is in San Jose. Shit sucks, I miss arcades.
>>6005526
...Help!
>>6005688
Practice, practice, practice. The only way to really learn is to keep doing it over and over.
>>6005526
I prefer to use file and sandpaper. I tried using x-acto but I lack the skills to do so and don't want to risk cutting my thumb open.
>>6005692
Everyone draws blood with knives at first, I've been using one for 3 years and haven't cut myself in the last 2. It helps to always be aware of where the blade will go if it slips, I like to aim it for my fingernail if I must aim towards a finger. Also a sharp blade cuts more consistently and is less likely to slip away on you.
>>6005714
>cutting yourself with small knifes builds up resistance to bigger knifes
This is the most insane bit of logic I've ever heard.
>>6005715
not really. refer to filename
>>6005717
oh gotcha. ive seen some people actually use that sort of logic legitimately though, so it's hard to tell anymore.
>>6005719
You mean you don't purposefully get yourself into light fender benders to build immunity to car accidents?
>>6005330
>resin safety
1. Always wet sand.
2. Don't leave wet powder on things where it will dry and then get airborne. Wash it off before it dries.
3. Don't use power tools, period.
4. Don't get resin dust on your skin, on food, don't work naked, don't run with scissors etc etc
Gel cleaners are useful for containing fine powders.
Respirator with P100 particulate filter is good, but only as an insurance. If you are working with resin where you live you don't want the powder in the air at any time because it will settle on things and you will breathe it in eventually.
Figure out how to do what you need done without producing fine powders in the first place. Hand drilling or sawing does not produce fine powders if done correctly.
>>6005420
>>6005456
>dremel to drill pin holes
Resin is not granite, hand drilling with a pin vise is all you need.
>>6005741
dremels go zoom zoom though, I just hand drill a couple pilot holes and jam it in.
Totally not because I don't have the correct drill bit size
>>6005745
You don't need "correct size" for pin holes. They don't need to be deep or smooth either.
You really don't need a dremel for this stuff.
>>6005741
Thanks friendo, this is exactly the kind of info i needed. What are gel cleaners? Is there a good resin safety doc floating around online? I didn't realize I need to avoid skin contact as well, should I wear rubber gloves?
I have pets and absolutely refuse to sand/drill resin in my house. Will doing it on the shared front porch pose any hazard for my next door neighbors assuming I follow all the protocol for keeping stuff wet and cleaning up right away?
>tfw packing up your model kits because you're moving and you snap a leg joint on a liger zero
feels a little bad, haven't even shipped the boxes yet and something broke. at least it didn't seem to be a hugely important piece.
Where's the best place to buy gunpla in Canada? Amazon.ca has crazy markups on kits, but good shipping prices, while gundamplanet has decent prices that arent much more then banzaihobby but 30$ for shipping.
Is that formania nu gundam bust a model or a pre-built kinda thing?
>>6006041
I just ordered from Hobbywave, and I noticed they have flat rate shipping to Canada- like $18. I live in the US, and usually order from HLJ/amiami/1999, but I was ordering the 1/100 Virtue and 1/100 Seravee which come in large boxes. I think I saved like 30$ after shipping, compared to ordering from HLJ.
Is the MG Build Strike a good first MG?
I wanted to get it along with the Dark Matter.
I know it's a decade old but how's the MG Gundam F91?
Are all Kotobukiya things made in china?
Working on the Zaku II, I feel like I'm improving as time goes on but two things that annoy me are: One, the size as it seems like this is going to come out to a 4" figure, and all the small knicks I made at the start. I can still see some faint outlines of a nub but i dont think the late rpieces are as bad, but some parts have gashes or scratch marks from when I dug too deep.
Still getting the hang of things as this is only my third kit in a year, but happy wtih my progress. Just wish I could make a clean, nice kit the first go around.
>>6005885
>gel cleaners
http://hlj.com/product/GNZGT79
>I have pets, neighbors, etc
Do your resin where _you_ sleep. Not even kidding.
This will either scare you away permanently or it will force you to use your brain so you don't do dumb shit. Or it will kill you.
So how are the G-reco kits in general? The anon posting about his G Arcane got me interested, the designs are pretty cool. I like how colorful they seem compared to most other mobile suits.
>>6006280
Not the resin guy, but isn't that gel cleaner the same as that cyber clean gel stuff? If it is, I have some of that and never thought of using it to clean out my files after sanding so that's pretty cool.

>>6006324
I've heard they generally have subpar engineering for the time, but as with anything if you like the design you should be able to fix it up and make it look good.
I saw pic related recently and started wanting an arcane.
haven't done any gunpla since i was a kid and was never serious about it, but i did these 3 kits over the past week or so and the whole process was really fun. I think I'm hooked and just wanted to show off in the meantime.
I did the ng 1/100 6th form barbatos first, i like it but i had never panel lined before so thats pretty shoddy. plus I tried to dirty up the white a little bit which i think needs some revisiting if i want to make it look solid.
The ng 1/100 graze was second and im the happiest with this one. I was way comfier with panel lining and the design is right up my alley.
The rg 1/144 freedom gundam was 3rd and overall im happy, though i wish i had done all the stickers instead of panel lining since It looked really solid out of the box. It was definitely challenging though because of the part count and how small they were.
sorry for the blog post and excuse my dusty as fuck shelf, but any advice? things i could do to make them look better? next build i should do?
>>6006382
>next build i should do?
HG neo zeong
>>6006382
>though i wish i had done all the stickers instead of panel lining
i'm confused
i don't understand why you can't do both?
You guys are overstating the danger of resin. Cured resin is mostly inert and is no more dangerous than ABS. The difference is it "atomizes" better so you get finer dust compared to common plastics when you work it. That means you're more likely to breathe it in, in terms of dangerous it's like sawdust. It's simply a matter of not wanting strange shit in your lungs that your body can't remove.
If you suffer from prolonged exposure (huffing it) then you'll suffer from lung problems but that's because you have ultrafine particles in your lungs. You can develop these problems from tons of things, including working with plastic, it might just take longer.
In terms of safety just wear a respirator or properly rated particulate mask, wet sand, wipe stuff down with a damp paper towel or rag, and vacuum after you're done. It's obviously a bad idea to work on it where you sleep but you can just wash your sheets and it'll be fine.
>>6006393
>The difference is it "atomizes" better so you get finer dust compared to common plastics when you work it.
I should say you get more fine dust. Working plastic still produces very fine particulates and you should wetsand and keep things clean and so forth.
>>6006387
i just thought it looked weird with the larger stickers that go over the panel lines
If nothing else, I've managed to reduce the amount of box needed.
>>6006041
Like >>6006067 said, usually HobbyWave is best for Canada (at least for bulk purchases). Amazon.ca usually doesn't have good deals. HLJ can be nice to use because of their private warehouse. HobbySearch and AmiAmi have their uses, but generally cost a bit more than HobbyWave due to shipping.
>>6006101
Shield conector is a bit loose... Come to think of it, that's really the only thing i have a problem with on mine.
Best photo I was able to get.
First kit, put it all together but couldn't stand seam lines, decided to prep it all for painting and priming. I tried the cementing technique for seam lines, watched a few tutorials on Youtube.
So I put cement on this leg two times now and sanded it with different grades and it's all smooth. However you can still see a seem line faintly. Is this just because the cement is transparent? Should I keep going over it? Should I just go buy some putty instead?
>>6006190
I'm on my first kit, same things as you, screw ups all over. Mostly with planning things out.
>>6006393
>Cured resin is mostly inert and is no more dangerous than ABS
Except urethane resin contains cyanates, so I'm going to call bullshit on this one.
>>6006482
You're probably not gonna erase the seam fully with just cement, so you'll need to putty it afterwards to fully erase it.
>>6006482
A quick touch of primer will tell you if there's still a gap asking for putty or if the different hue is just due to the glue. It'll also show you if the sanding has left any scratches that need dealing with, and other defects.
>>6006477
Is that F91 frowning?
>>6006517
F91 and F97 (Crossbone) Gundams can open their faceplates to vent out heat, revealing a face underneath.

That sucks, I live pretty close to them so they give me 1 day shipping for only $10.
Went to GundamPlanet today, rate my haul.
>>6006792
But SD arms are like putting two pieces together and that's it.
>Skyrim remastered
Oh never mind. You're an idiot.
How big are your guys' work spaces? Gunpla seems like a really fun hobby, but my apartment doesn't have any unoccupied rooms, and my bedroom is fairly small.
>>6006807
I use a coffee table in my bedroom.
It's perfect for most HGs, a bit cramped with any big kits or higher.
I've seen worse.
>>6006807
I have one of those long, foldable white plastic tables for my work space now, but I used to work on a small wooden one with the runners by my feet.
>>6006523
Sharpen the tips of those V-fins, bro.
>>6006796
well, i did a bit of extra polishing here and there to remove the plastic stains, sanded a seamline and painted metallic silver beneath the clear green bits.
also yeah, fuck skyrim remastered, i didn't even get to finish the main quest line and there are already bugged side quests.
free shit is shit, no wonder they had to give it away for no cost to lure people into replaying it, i bet they'll release a few more paid dlcs
>>6006832
That's a lot of work for something that still looks pretty OOB.
Ok, why am I loving the Sword Impulse out of all of these No-grade Seed kits?
Were the Destiny No-grades just that much of a step up in the engineering department with those double ball polycaps?!
Because even stealing his Anti-ship swords for a later kitbash, he's still pretty good for posing.
I mean, I already liked the Duel over the Strike due to having a gun he could actually hold, but yeah...

I feel like an idiot for not thinking this, I should be able to make my own version of an Astrea Boxer Frame using Exia NGs for ... the boxer frame and Blade Kicks.
What stuff can I bash together to make a non-Katoki proportioned Wild Wurger, by the way?

>What stuff can I bash together to make a non-Katoki proportioned Wild Wurger, by the way?
No idea honestly...
Hell, I wouldn't even recommend it for a lot of things, the beam rifles aren't the greatest (they're made to be slid into the hands, since it's too difficult to pry the entire arm apart, and it can make them extremely wobbly in the case of the Strike) and I lucked out that the other accessories use 3mm mounting pegs...

Actually he shouldn't and he should stop posting crappy, unresized pics here too.
I forgot how good it felt to get new good supplies, holy shit. Got a Wen rotary tool for some modifications and battle damage stuff, this sick ass dusting brush by Tamiya that surprisingly works way too well, and a proper hobby saw for future scratch building and modifications. I just wish I had the time to properly use these things.
Does anyone know the exact date this is supposed to release this month? I am close to my shipping date on HLJ and was hoping to squeeze him in before the deadline.
>>6006864
So, w-why did you get them...?
>>6006872
Bawoo?
>>6006876
I'll eventually use the rotary tool and saw and the dusting brush can be used any time. It's always nice to have a good assortment of tools and supplies for any occasion, and in the end, is more value than having a huge backlog, which I coincidentally do too. I also wanted to reward myself by getting something nice after not spending in a while.

Scratches from sand papering are normally fixed with a finer sandpaper. But if you fucked up too bad for that then it's putty time, yes.
