So a local group had a public display event with some big elaborate builds. Their photography was kinda low quality though. Want me to dump the more interesting ones?

genuinely not my intention to troll or throw shade

lego to me seem like one of the only collector toy sorta things that have very kiddy connotations. a lot of other stuff based in kids properties or comics/cartoons like tmnt for example carries over into multiple iterations, some more sophisticated than others, but the large amount of nostalgia it brings out in even the most square of normies makes it the kind of series one can collect from without getting much shit for it. obviously most people also have their warm and fuzzies for lego but its not something they want to revisit or wear a shirt of because "bazinga im a geek!" you know?

so i wonder do you guys as a community or fandom or whatever get looked down on by others, "geeks" or otherwise, for being heavily into it? this question is aimed at those of you say 21+ & less so those in their teens if there are any here

sorry if it seems like im judging cause im really not, i have figures of cute anime girls and all kinds of questionable shit in my collection. just curious about what kind of responses you guys meet from women or normies or relatives i guess.

wanna-moc-6598.jpg
483KB, 960x2160px
I recently rebuilt LEGO 6598 i got from my parents at Christmas 1995.
I was thinking about buying some standard parts from Pick-a-Brick to enlarge it a bit in the back part.
Two Staircases 4277751 would allow minifigures to walk up to first and second floor.
A dozen 4x6 windows would be needed (ground floor: three for one side, one for the other side, four for behind; first floor, two for behind, one for a side; lastly one for the external part across the road), then four 4x3 windows (the small squares in the picture), and a door from the building to the back road.
Then I'd buy a five 6x10 plates to make a proper layer of walkable ground, since i don't like grass inside buildings. Oh, and I'd need some long white parts 12x1 and such.
I'm a bit worried about buying all this stuff, not sure if it's worth it. Any suggestion / insight? I was also thinking about trying to make it "modular" with removable floors, but looks a pain.

>tfw collected every set I want
>tfw not creative enough for MOCs
What now?
>>
>>5960693
Most times people are kind of confused and try to awkwardly stumble away from the subject. That is until i show them what i or others online do with lego. When they see impressive mocs they begin to understand. That's why i always underline i don't "play" with lego, i "build" or "design".
(Next part is gonna sound really douchey, but it's my honest opinion)
I actually think lego is far more sophisticated than any other toy, since it takes creativity and skill to build and express yourself through lego. That's why i generally look down on people who exclusively collect, be it lego or just action figures. (And yet i myself own a fair share of actionfigures...)
>>
>>5961097
Just keep trying. Everyone starts small. I'd say start by looking at mocs other people made and imitate aspects or reverse engineer them to learn what is possible with your bricks

While i agree they aren't really good as multifunctional building sets and all the different racers had a lot of character.

I remember getting a bunch of them for my birthday and thinking they were kinda boring, but after getting a few together with my brother we had a ton of fun building ramps out of road baseplates and obstacles to stunt through.

Shredd was my main.

>>5960974
Nice ship anon.

>>5960358
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dVGINIsLnqU

>>5960693
I always think the opposite.
You just specified the collecting part of toys and how some popculture properties can have engaging narratives fit for more adult audiencess. But that isn't necessarily the point of LEGO. If you're after toys of characters from an intellectual property you'll just collect the different ones that exist and you're done. Lego (original) lines have for the longest time had little to none narratives for the longest time (current lines like nexo knights and Ninjago are recent exceptions together with Bionicle)
This was for good reason too. The entire point of lego was that you could make up your own builds and stories
Where collecting figures is a rather passive pasttime (unless you go pewpew with your G.I.joes, wich is fine by me but maybe not by normies). Engineering some crazy mocs actually takes research, experience and effort that would be more interesting for adults.

>Engineering some crazy mocs actually takes research

Am I doing it wrong if I just start putting bricks together and see where it takes me? That's part of how I always did it when I was a kid. My builds tend to be more goal-oriented now, but even if I have an idea of what I want to build (vehicle, robot, etc) I never really know what it'll look like until I decide it's done.

I think that's part of the brilliance of the Lego Movie: It captures the haphazard, organic (and sometimes weird) nature of MOCs, especially kids'. That's why I thought the TLM sets were kind-of surreal: They were based on designs meant to represent a kid's obviously not professional creations, but they were packaged sets with specific instructions.

On the other hand, maybe they taught some kids that it's okay to mix sets and put together crazy random things that come from your own creativity instead of instructions. Like the movie says.

First time hearing this research stuff. I also just put pieces after pieces, sometimes I build a totally different thing than from what I originally had in mind. Though I admit sometimes I do check some anatomy pictures if I want to do something in an anthropomorphic style but that's all the "research" I ever done.

In my personal experience building fictional modern/near future military vehicles, I do a fair amount of research before starting something. If I want to start a truck for example, I look up existing vehicles as well as some concept art in order to get an idea of what's not only cool in terms of design, but what's also believable. Then there's also searching Flickr for what other people have built to see what parts they've used and what sort of complexity is evident in their designs, which not only provides motivation, but also allows me to maybe skim a technique or two for my own build.

Of course, there's also simply playing with the parts, which is another large part of everything. Once you've sort of got a proof of concept down it's easy to play with the parts and see where they lead.

tl;dr, MOCcing can involve both research and fucking around.
>>
>>5961466
I can see your point, reference images for accuracy are something important for a well made MOC. I personally stick with more "wing it" type of building.

I'm trying to find a set I remember seeing as a kid but don't remember anything about it other than it had some sort of platform that you'd (presumably) put things on and it would move a needle on a scale next to it. I think it might have been a train set and you'd put containers on the scale? I remember trying to figure out for ages how the scale setup worked because I couldn't get one myself.

Anyone know what I'm talking about?

Hey all, I have the Death Star II from when I was a kid (got it as a gift from an uncle who had an in with Lego), but I'm not really interested in it anymore. It's complete, save for the fact that I rebuilt it into the Death Star I (so no broken half, just a complete sphere).

Is it worth anything? The only ebay sale of the DS2 I see is for factory sealed ones for thousands of dollars, which seems pretty high to me. Given that mine has been opened, built, and customized, I imagine the value isn't nearly that high.

Mall of America Lego Store update:

The PaB wall is pretty much the same as it was this spring, but it looks like they added 1x2 brown bricks.

CMF Old-Timey Diver helmets are long gone in the BaM, but they have cone hats now. I can't find the female torso with the ID badge on cracklink, but they have that, the CMF Arctic Fisherman torsos and legs, the black rumpled suit torso, and the green and white CMF Tennis Ace torso. They have a lot of short legs in blue, brown, and tan, a lot of CMF Flamenco Dancer dress slopes and CMF S2 Witch dress slopes. Lots of red toolboxes, buzzsaws, wrenches, and bats for some reason. CMF Stuntman pompadour tan hair, Executron black hair, and the blue Agents hair. The head selection seems to be a lot bigger than it was six months ago. Sleeping Princess CMF head and the other two were both on my want list, so that was cool.

Now that you brought up the price, this on pic related was a fucking bitch exclusive. Not only is the insider tour needs the person to apply a year prior, it also costs around $2500 not counting travel expenses, and only 200 were allowed in. It's a game of patience.
In order to defeat Lego, you have to understand everything about them. Their music, language, culture, and many others. As much as Lego loves exclusives, they adore making improvements and variants, taking full advantage of their license such that they maximize product diversity and therefore profits.

Thus, if I wait, this long-adored character will gain even greater popularity in the show, and Lego will make him more available after his set retires, be it in more sets, as an exclusive, or even a keychain.

Victory is already mine.

They gave keychains to Bossk and Boba, the latter whom continues to show up in sets. They made Bossk a keychain a year after his release, and around half a year before the super star destroyer set. Hoping for a Dengar keychain as well as Thrawn by 2017 or 2018.

But worst-case scenario, maybe I'll spot a Phantom at retail and make an inconspicuous purchase and return. Thanks friend.
>>
>>5962033
cmon bud, $30 is cheap, specially for getting Thrawn along with a ship, a droid and another fig, if you can't afford that, why are you collecting LEGO?
and I doubt they'll give Thrawn a keychain, since no other Rebels fig has gotten one
also, read again, I said running minifgs wouldn't get EXCLUSIVES, not keychains, actually keychains for running minifigs are the most common thing ever, I said exclusives
>>
>>5962040
I'm tempted to get the Ghost Rider set, but generally I opt out of sets that are $20+, because I neither have the space nor the funding. Furthermore, the plastic quality has dipped as Lego ventured into more licenses. I'm keeping my money!

I added keychains as another possibility (a more likely one on hindsight), not as an objection, sorry. Thrawn is probably themost anticipated Rebels character by the fanbase; it's well within a neat possibility for Lego to hype that up by making some variant uniform/head version as an exclusive. You can never have too many options, you know.

I want to be like Admiral Thrawn when I grow up. Brandishing my tactics and defeating international corporations will be how I start.

Haven't touched Lego in years, but found this big guy stuffed away. Managed to salvage/rebuild 99% of it.

What's the resale value on completed old builds? Or should I just hand onto it for the novelty value.

>>
>>5963570
Oh damn dude, nice going on the "hands"
The simple solutions for the legs are also really great.

>>5963751
The head could definitely be stronger. What I like to do when building a simpler waifu type is to use different 45Âş roof slopes to build a "face". I can post some examples of this.

Legs and arms definitely work for what they are, neat parts use on the knees and hips. Arms will be limited a bit by the slopes you have but whether or not that bothers you is your call.

The chest is good in that it suggests a bosom, but depending on how you proceed it could pose a challenge in finding something that'll cover the slopes satisfactorily.

Its just a shame, id kill for a candy skull printed head for the dance figure. Want to make her stand out a bit more. Ive seen a few prints done by third party makers, but not quite what im looking for.

Theres some animated movie about the day of the dead that has a female main character, her face would be a perfect print.

are the pyrratz horribly crippled or were they just made this way? are they birth defects or battle scars /lg/?
>>
Does anyone have pictures of the Lego Batman Movie CMFS
>>
>>5965368
Is being a mimic birth defect?
>>
>>5965376
Fair enough, I mean the other 2- Skulzy has a pegleg and a missing eye and sharxhas a pegleg and a hook hand
>>
>>5965382
Why couldn't they all be mimics? If not that, then I'd agree that the barrel pegleg is slightly irregular, but he is a shark with limbs. It is best not to try and rationalize Mixels. That one was literally a cone head holding glowsticks to become a wizard. Don't even get me started on the UFO tribe.

Lego sometimes does them with those half bow pieces. You can do stripes or solid colors very easily. The other option is using stickered tiles.
