Do ko's like Kubianbao, Takasa Tony, and similar groups count as 3rd party? I know they are takara knockoffs, but some stuff like the BB7 coneheads are a different mold from the takara ones, and Kubianbao makes a lot of oversized stuff. I'm just not sure if it's something to discuss here. The tfg isn't the place... That thread is just shitpost general.

Pretty much this.

The megs are going for entirely different aesthetics anyway. DX9 is blocky and chunktastic. Despo is a more stylized version. MP megs is a sleek gewun linework version for better or for worse.

That image annoys the fuck out of me.

Fortunately, inside my head, where everything makes sense, Fortress Maximus is a battle station/ bunker base for the (human-sized) Nebulan headmasters and precisely as large as his (again, human-sized Nebulan) Headmaster partner allows - and since I go by the Dreamwave notion that the Headmaster armor is about twice the height of a human, Fort Max is roughly 64 meters tall.

2016/2017 is Beast Wars' anniversary year. Takara also seems pretty fond of it considering their Legends line uses BW characters as mascots. I would also say its for Hasbro to be able to market, but honestly considering Hasbro's current team seems to not care for BW, I think that wasn't a factor. and besides, Armada was more popular so if they where thinking of making an MP with shared marketability, it'd have been armada Optimus.

How many people here collect 3P stuff exclusively or almost exclusively as far as Transformers go? 3P started off as accessories or additions to the regular classics line, and now it's like you can forego the classics line entirely.

For those that do only collect 3P, do you have a sort of checklist in mind(i.e., all the G1 84/85 characters, all the show characters, things like that), or do you just collect what you like?

I've actually not watched/read that much Transformers (not even finished with Season 2 of G1 yet, though I have seen the movie) but there's loads of characters/toys I love/want to get regardless. Case in point, Defensor. He was barely in the cartoon, but I love the concept and his look so much I had to get Guardia (I was originally going to stick with the UW release but the ports all cracked).

My personal favourite fiction is the G1 toy bios, because they packed in so much flavour into such a small space. Like, you didn't have to watch the whole series to know the character- you buy a toy that looks cool and it comes with everything you need to know about him.

I grew up on beast wars, so probably 75% of stuff I buy nowadays is g1 slavish remakes that I have no connection to. They were really good designs and I can appreciate the fiction from a distance, but man, the cartoon doesn't hold up nowadays. I've tried to watch it twice and I can never make it more than a couple episodes.

That's what happen when your designer/engineer is shit.

Making good looking 3D robot models doesn't mean you're capable of designing Transformers. A lot of third parties should realize that.

Love it. Iron Factory do the opposite of Hasbro when it comes to legends. For Hasbro making a coherent Alt mode is the priority and they build the robot from there. IF build the robot first and then try to squeeze an alt mode out of it.

It's not like the comic design is any better.
>>

>>
So I am absolutely regretting buying TR Galvatron every day goes by, I want to buy the shapeways cannon piece that'll make it just a bit more tolerable

Thing is, I've only ever bought "-color here- Strong and flexible polished" parts before. I want a smooth finish for that, people have told me I should get it cast in "Frosted Ultra Detail", but I've also heard that's more brittle and prone to breakage

Considering the overall thinness of this part, what should I get it cast in?
>>
>>5906917
Given that it's a piece that needs to take stress I'd say go for Strong Flexible Polished, and if necessary give it a good sand. FUD is good but not for parts that are under physical strain.

If you give him a helmet though then buy that in Frosted Ultra/Extreme Detail and paint it. generally speaking the rule of thumb is:

Static parts that need high detail (heads/faces, unmoving detail parts etc): FUD/FED.

Parts that move, or are under any level of physical stress (moving parts, sockets, weapons etc): SF/SFP.

There's still time for them to give a surprise announcement of the Godmasters coming with him though, and I guess they could end up selling them separately too.

Not gonna lie, the base mode looks kind of shit, and doesn't look much like it should.

The rest of the figure though looks beautiful.
>>
>>5907660
oh the base mode is proper garbage. It feels like they're really half-assing their figures, nowadays. I only hope that they can fix his thighs before they release him. I'd hate to be transforming him and having chunks of him fall off/break. His shoulder-pads look like they're too weak to hold up his buckler, so everything just droops.
>>
>>5907686

Well, not the first time an MMC figure had a part that could fall off (Commotus), but it wasn't really an issue since it was designed to come off in the first place.

Only way to find out is to wait for the reviews. Much as shitpost-anon loves trying to shitpost with a pic from a test copy at a con, only way to see if it's fixed is to see actual reviews.
>>
>>5907689
Except it's MMC. No reviewer will be honest about it. You'd better off waiting until most people get theirs and watch some TF boards. People paying for their stuff are usually more honest.

>>

Maybe I'm not watching the same reviewers, but I find that for the most part the video can't lie. Unless they pose it off screen and then talk over a static pose, you'll see parts flop around, you'll see things that are hard to pin in, etc.

There's a point where they probably should have no bothered with a base mode (or only mentioned it off-hand as a fan mode". The toy is going for IDW Overlord anyway, who never had a base mode. And in light of that, it's no real loss to me. If this was trying to be Masterforce Overlord and the base mode was that weak, I'd be more concerned (not that the base mode was ever common in Masterforce anyway)

I actually got mine about 3 months ago off eBay for like $5 over MSRP.

His joints are a little looser than I expect from MMC, but not floppy loose. I might have to toss some future on him eventually, but for now he's fine.

I wish I had a little bottle of vodka and a cigarette he could hold to accompany his slav squatting.
>>
>>5907946

Lets see some pics, give us some details, how is it? Any QC problems?
>>
This probably makes me a heathen, but I don't care much for full-on 3P figures. They have shortcomings just like HasTak but with some customization and 3P add-on kits, the HasTak shit is great.

I've got a G1 helmet and gun adapter for Galvatron. IMO makes him much better than Sovereign looks.

I saw a video where someone put Mania King's head on TR Galvatron, but it's not as good a mesh as I'd have liked, it's too stylized. Looks wonderful on Mania King though.

I'd buy the fuck out of a Voyager-scale GEEWUN Megatron done correctly though. 90% of my issue with 3P is they focus solely on Masterpiece. And I don't like Masterpiece.
>>
>>5908191

Given the scale difference between an MP Megs and Voyager Megs is about 2 inches, there wouldn't be that much difference anyway.
>>
>>5907865
They're likely to reissue him soon, like Hexatron and the Feralcons
>>
>>5908211
>2 inches is not a major difference in height
>>
>>5908191

I prefer 3p solely because the MP line isn't always the best anymore and I like what big budgets can do for a toy.

If hasbro had 100+ dollar MP quality figures at wallmart I'd buy em.
>>
>>5908191
I enjoy upgrade kits too, but sometimes it's a hard sell when a HasTak toy plus its upgrades cost about the same as a whole 3P toy.

In general though, I've not picked a "side". I buy what I like, which is a combination of 3P, add-ons, shapeways/resin kits, and HasTak. And I'm happy that options exist so you can get the version best suited to you.

Well shit. It's supposedly from a pin thats not in enough, do you see a pin poking out somewhere that you can tap in or something?

Transformation was fun and a little challenging for the first go. Nothing felt fragile that it would break outside straight ham handing it. Only nitpick is I wish they'd allowed more clearance for the head. Could see the potential for scratching if your not careful.

Real talk who does the best job with packaging? So far I'm most impressed with Generation Toy's foam inserts and textured boxes with the art on the sleeve. I'm slightly partial to MMC's magnet doors but the CGI always looks tacky as fuck. I also like the simplicity of the Function X boxes.
>>

I like MMC's packaging. Pretty solid. Don't own any Gen Toy stuff, but theirs looks great. I used to do Warhammer stuff, and kept my models in shaped foam packs like that to protect'em, so shit like that is basically impervious to breakage as long as you don't go King Kong on the fucking thing.

Also BBTS has the best packaging I've seen for sending shit. Their bubble wrap is great and they put it all around everything. They're the only place I've bought from where the shipping costs ALMOST feel justified.

It gets a lot of flack but my quality issues on it have been zero to real minor. Mainly clearance issues that can be avoided and Cerberus knee joints that can be fixed with a fan mode or a fan fix if you prefer.

The individual bots really outshine the combine mode but that doesn't mean its not great. My copy has no problems with the thigh joints on Cerberus and its dead solid with both leg combined modes.

If they ever do release a v2 I'd mainly just fix the knee joints on Cerberus for future owners. Everything else on my copy has been great and I rather prefer the individual bots in some cases.

Pros:
The train mode is really nice
Comes with some decent accessories

Cons:
Paper-thin plastic
Bad qc
Shuttle mode basically worthless because the thrustor piece won't stay pegged on
Made with a 'it's for a shelf so it won't be transformed more than once and therefore doesn't need to be well-built' mentality

If this was built as a toy it would be a great figure, but as it is now it will bring you nothing but frustration. Unless the Chinese are already knocking it off and I bought garbage instead of the real thing, but it's pretty completely knocked off if this is the case

Plus, their "secondary" MP releases seem to be occupied with Beast Wars for now. I also can't help but feel if that if they wanted to make another non-84-86 G1 character, they'd do something like Ginrai before Victory Leo (funny enough, doing a Ginrai and then Leo would make sense given the fiction).

I would love it if it was more realistic. It's hitting that level of 25% realistic truck and 75% cartoon.

I really don't think anyone will make a really realistic looking truck mode for any Prime.

It might just be a group dissatisfied with the current OP. Like that arm add-on kit that made MP-10 have shorter arms (and unfortunately gave it a fair bit of arm kibble).

Alternatively, it could just be the company thinking that a popular character will sell.

I like it actually. It basically beefcake prime with more detail. I like the 4x helmet spike things and the blockyness of it.

If it's not shit I'll buy it. The TW constructo-nots didn't impress me though so we'll see.

Tab tolerances are way too tight for a figure so small. The fins on mine have to be moved up and down on the pin to rotate them properly and the force needed is way too much.

Finally got this guy in from BBTS expecting the worst from all the talk of loose ankles and right legs.

Mine completely fine.

I'm sure i may have to do a fix in the future being transformed and back again time over time as it's all pretty simple friction based locks, but for right now I have zero problems with any of his much talked about "problems"

Apollyon gets the Swift boot out of my collection, this feels like a product you can actually touch and want to transform.

Just got my Function X Crox. He... isn't that good. I got him kind of cheap but other than a couple of neat touches (the storage of his head in the chest) he's not nearly as good as Skullsmasher. It's also kind of funny that his hips are just as loose as my Skullsmasher's were before some pledge.

Sure. Carnifex is a high dollar boutique item for a IDW collector. Not everyone is going to be all about that.

But I do know that he's going to a be a pretty hot sale because he's the only modern Overlord and the more geewun/MF Overlord is coming from a new company.

Got Despotron in today. Fucking beautiful, everything is tight. Thigh swivels are almost too tight, I hope they loosen a bit with time.

And yeah, he does slide in a bit at the right knee, but in my case, it's only after posing him a bit. He doesn't slide just standing there. Might not even bother trying to press the pins in for something so minor.

Also be careful with his cannon Anon's. He took a goddamn chunk out of my finger trying to slide it off his arm after I put it on to test how hard it would be to take off. Which was pretty hard in my case.

Haven't transformed him yet, haven't done much other than test his joints. I don't want to get blood all over him.

The good news is, the cannon comes off easier with a bit of on-off repetition. Bad news is, it rubs the paint off too on the slot. Guessing thats the reason it was so hard to pull off in the first place, paint.

And of course, the finger injury. Seriously Anon's, be careful. That shit stings.

To me, Jaegertron feels the most like the character he portrays and has the best aesthetic.

I don't really like Death's Head from a design standpoint. He's too "comically 80's metal album cover" for me and that's saying something because I'm normally all about that shit. I also just never liked his color scheme and I just don't think the design works that well for the mold.

For Not-Cyclonus there, he looks enough like Cyclonus to be Cyclonus but is just too different from existing Cyclonus designs for me to like him as Cyclonus and it's not like we don't already have some solid Cyclonus figures to choose from.

Jaegertron just ends up seeming the best to me. I like his color scheme and it's smartly applied to make everything pop in the right places, he has enough Lockdown aesthetics to know that's who he is, he looks like a space car in alt mode (though I still would have preferred an earth car mode with his robot mode design from IDW), and Lockdown isn't actually all that well established of a character so it makes it easier to see Jaegertron as Lockdown. He looks like a younger, pre/mid-war Lockdown who hasn't been at the bounty business for nearly as long but has taken some big enough names to show he is good at what he does. RotF Lockdown looks like Lockdown several thousand years and several thousand bounties down the line after coming to Earth. It's headcannon, yeah, but it's a story that makes Jaegertron even more appealing than he already was to me.

tl;dr: I think Jaegertron is the best of the three.
