The only figure I outright dislike is sentinal prime, and even then it's only the hideous colour pallete. Skullsmasher is probably the weakest mold, it's got shit articulation and the tail piece doesn't attach well and makes a shitty looking gun.

Scourge and Blurr are really nice too, but I think I'll end up getting the Takaratomy Blurr for his colour scheme.

They already knew it was feasible since Energon. They just didn't do Combiners because Aaron Archer didn't like them. And he was gone from toy development by the time of WfC/Thrilling 30.

What really held back combiner development wasn't the engineering. Takara's engineers had been designing them in their spare time for years, but rather on the Hasbro side their theories regarding how kids played with and collected toys had them convinced that combiners would be a huge money sink.

As someone who owns a bunch of 3P shit, I can tell you, most 3P combiners are fucking terrible. Finicky, too heavy so you can't pose them because gravity will send them tumbling down, breakage problems, etc etc. Theres very, very few good ones, and the only one I could ever actually recommend to anyone is Feral Rex. And even that still suffers from the whole gravity thing. Being a huge mass of heavy plastic isn't a good thing when it comes to combiners.

I think the biggest factor was trying to make a scramble-combiner just when the budget tanked. Early FoC was the bottom of the barrel when it came to budgets and that was a poor time to tackle an ambitious thing like a scramble-combiner.

Another Legends summary, Legends Blurr.

Blurr fondly remembers his time searching for a new home planet with Rodimus Prime, which came to an end when Rodimus became a Micromaster and asked him to help settle on Micro. Being prideful of his speedy body, he couldn't stand the thought of trading it in for a Micromaster equivalent and ran away to join Fortress's crew... where he ended up losing his body and becoming tiny anyway, leaving him wishing he'd accepted Rodimus's proposal to begin with.

The melancholy Blurr is approached by Longarm, chief clerk of the Autobot Axalon Trading Company, who cheers him up by presenting him with a new body and asks him to use it to defeat a returned Galvatron. He first protests that he could never take on Galvatron by himself, but sets out after Longarm convinces him that he can do it with the speed of his new body. Once he's gone, Longarm removes his Autobot badge and reveals his true identity to be Shockwave, who knows only the Autobots can turn Galvatron back into the level-headed Megatron. Blurr runs circles around Galvatron, who responds by blasting his head and back piece off, but he's fast enough to transform and ride the detached part straight into Galvatron's head, knocking it off. Weirdwolf and Tarantulas, who this time had Mindwipe hypnotize Megatron into Galvatron, see that the effect has worn off and retreat with Galvatron's body.

With his speed restored, Blurr becomes a deliveryman of Autobot Axalon products, but he's so talkative that he ends up chatting with customers instead of having them sign his deliveries.

The six identical Sweeps, loyal soldiers of Galvatron, are introduced:
Sweep No. 1 is their self-styled leader, Scourge, a sleazy sycophant. Waspinator chimes in to point out that his voice sounds like that of Thundercracker.

Sweep No. 2 is a pessimist who thinks bad things are always happening to him. He sounds like Astrotrain.

Sweep No. 3 is a selfish, forceful jerk who's always ordering others around. He sounds just like Blast Off.

Sweep No. 5 is calm and thoughtful, always being deep in thought about something, and disapproves of Scourge being the leader. His voice sounds like Skywarp's.

Sweep No. 6 is a cheerful fella who likes to shout "six!" a lot and gets along with Sweep No. 7. He's got Superion's voice.

Sweep No. 7 is a natural airhead with a tendency to gasp for breath even though he doesn't need to breathe. He sounds a bit like Blurr.

Galvatron wonders why there's no Sweep No. 4, and Scourge explains No. 4 is dead, Galvatron himself having told him to "meet his end with dignity". No. 4 then appears as a ghost behind Galvatron, scaring him.

And yeah, 4's dead, he doesn't show up in the Scourge comic.

Which transitions nicely in the upcoming Voyager Hot rod. Man, Takara's fiction team is able to actually work in this stuff nicely if you care about fiction. All these non-Headmasters as Headmasters are just later g1 versions after they inevitably become -Masters. considering the BW era MAximal and Predacon's upgrades downsize them anyway, you can see this as sort of a half-way point.

also, that "Longarm" form for shockwave is a streeeetch but I'm always fond of new forms/techniques being added to fiction via fiddling with toys.

I came back to /toy/ just in time it seems. I'm getting back into Transformers, I have most of the ones I had as a child, including a mostly complete Gen 1 Starscream with sound and light backpack. Also have the mini G1 Starscream, the green and purple mini Tank version of Megatron, and I am looking to add a Shockwave, Soundwave Skywarp, the adorable Cobra Viper bot and that cute BTR 90 Onslaught to my collection. Hell, I'll gladly take suggestions on what to buy. Mostly just glad to see people still like Transformers.

Explaining what's happening in the Legends comic would take... a while. Basically, after Megatron went to the Legends universe, his body was destroyed by Skids and the Skid squad, but he survived as a tiny Megatron, then this happened:

A jet piloted by Megatron attacks Tokyo and before transforming into Galvatron. How could it come to this...?

Earlier at Tera-Kura Co., Megatron chews out his subordinates over Skullcruncher's recent attack on the city, telling them he's slowly trying to conquer the world by lawful means: random rampages and Tarantulas's attempts to control the black market are not part of the plan. Annoyed by this indirect approach, Weirdwolf and Tarantulas present the shrunken Megatron with a new body that, through Zamojin energies, he can form the head of. When he does so, he is ensnared by a battle mask that amplifies the evil in his heart, reverting his mind back to his Galvatron days and turning him into the destroyer Weirdwolf and Tarantulas want him to be.

In the present, Blackarachnia, Nightbird, and Slipstream's attempt to dissuade Megatron leads to them getting attacked by their boss, who shouts that his name is Galvatron and that no one orders him around. Tarantulas and Weirdwolf instead cheer him on, the former believing the destruction will improve Tera-Kura's sales on the black market while the latter sees it as a chance to conquer the world for himself afterwards. Megatron proves able to resist the mask's influence, however, as he rips his head clean off his body, transforms it into cannon mode and fires a warning shot at Tarantulas and Weirdwolf, warning them that they could never hope to manipulate the likes of him. In the aftermath, it turns out Megatron's rampage actually did increase their company's sales, though he flatly refuses to do it again.

Megatron is from the post-G2 era (everyone else is from post-Masterforce), explaining his rather "peaceful" nature.

You're in luck on Shockwave, long as you're willing to pony up the cash. Theres 3 Masterpiece style Shockwaves out there, 2 by 3rd party companies (Quakeblast and Quakewave), and an official one by Takara. Theres also Legends Shockwave, who is tiny and awesome as fuck. Though if you want an MP styled one, I'd recommend Quakeblast. Pic related, it's QB next to the Legends Shockwave.

Soundwave just got a Titans Return Leader class figure, and the Masterpiece is getting an Asia Region reissue soon-ish.

Skywarp had a Legends figure recently who is decent, and a Leader figure who some people like, some hate.

Yeah Devastation is awesome. If you want to keep your budget light though, definitely grab the Legends Shockwave. Great lil' figure.

For just general buys, I'd recommend pretty much every Deluxe in the current line, Titans Return. They're really well done. I'd recommend a lot of stuff in the previous line: Combiner Wars/Unite Warriors, as they've given us great combiners, but well, given it'll take you $90-150ish bucks to make one full combiner depending on your taste and which one you want, that might be outside your price range a bit if you're not wanting to blow wads of dosh on filling your toy chest.
