For those unfamiliar, "Plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model." If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.

***GM Group Build***
Rules:
Pick an HG GM, and paint and customize it. For it to count as a GM, it literally just has to have GM in the name of the MS on the box, otherwise, no, it doesn't count. As far as customizing it, I'm going to place a limit on that. The limit is 50% additions to the kit.
To define 50%, look at it like this, you could take a GM Custom and replace the arms (including shoulders), legs, and backpack and I'd call that 50%. I'm not counting handheld bits in that. If you're unsure of something please ask in IRC, the thread, or email.

Due Date: 8/12
Submissions go to [email protected]
Submission format
Please submit photos in jpg via a compressed file (zip, rar, or 7zip), please don't link images to imgur or photobucket or the like. Please also name yourself, even if it's a pseudonym. Also indicate your participation in the contest below.

***Contest***
Instead of doing just a generic group build this time, there's going to be a prize pack. The prize pack will contain a GM Sniper K9, a set of glass paint mixing jars, and a Tamashii stand (sized for HGs or RDs). Shipping is at my expense.

Rules for the contest:
If you wish to enter the contest I'm going to actually need some proof. Please send me pictures of your kit as a work in progress and a final product with a timestamp and your email address. I hate to put his burden on you guys but this is the internet and people suck.

Judging
Regardless of who wins the contest proper, all entries will be made available on a blog post on Saturday, August 13th. Actual judging will take place Saturday as well, with the winner announced that evening. The winner will be contacted via email and be given a two day grace period for responding. PLEASE USE AN ACTIVE EMAIL WHEN SUBMITTING!

I am not really into Gundam or model kits but I always really liked the design of the Gundam Wing Leo grunts. I would like to get a model of him but a search revealed to me that apparently Bandai isn't doing many of the generic soldier suits and never made Leos. Though there is an actionfigure of the Leo I would still like to know what Gundams got model kits, that have a militaristic / utilitarian design.
>>
>>5804579
I wonder what the cupoche head will look like on top of an actual FAG body.

SD gundam heads on HG bodies usually look bretty gud.

Been out of the Gunpla game for a few months. Thinking of getting back into it. Are there any decent Gunpla forums out there or at they just the usual circle jerk of just one amazing tier builder then hundreds of stock builders who can barely panel line all telling each other how great they are for doing the bare minimum?

I doubt the neck or torso joint would be able to hold up that massive head though.
After resizing, its still a SD styled head on a normal body, but it looks kinda adorable. I bet you could make a semi deformed if you shortened the limbs a little.

They actually did make a 1/144 leo kit back in the 90s. It's just very shitty even for its time and very rare because they don't reprint it.

That said if you like the simple, utilitarian look of grunts there are a ton of options. Take a look at the various Graze, Genoace, Tieren, GM, and Zaku to start.

Picked up sd ex barbatos on a whim and it required a lot of small paint apps. I expected that since its an sd so im currently letting these cure while the torso is being painted. Part of me hopes that an sd ex gm or zaku is released down the line for big head mode fun.
>>
>>5804964
Gunpla tends to be clean when they come from the factory, probably because it's for kids. If there was release agent on the trees you'd tell, it'd come out on your fingers and annoy the hell out of you.

That said, it's good practice to at least clean them with warm water and basic dish washer soap, ideal would be degreasing cleaning like Simple Green but like I said they generally come clean of release agent.

Playing around with Aves Apoxie Putty for the first time. Set some onto a piece that needed the back portion sculpted and a small flat putty piece onto some plaplate for detailing patterns.

When is it best to scribe detail into the putty? The packaging isn't super clear on that, it just says to let things cure 24 hours before sanding.
>>
>>5806453
You can work on it while it's a few hours into the curing process when it's not so sticky and a little bit harder. For this you can use sculpting tools. Or you can do it when it's cured and rock hard, but you'll want to use a file and modeling tools (carbide scriber, plastic scriber/cutter, the typical stuff)
>>

>>5806460
I've got the tools you mention. So, scribing panel lines on the flat one would be best after only a few hours, but the camera would be best done after a full day of curing when it's rock hard, right?
>>
>>5806488
General shape while kinda soft, final detailing (sharpness and small details) when it's hard.

Basically, when it's soft you sculpt, when it's hard you carve. Do you think it'll be easy to carve out a camera like that?
>>
>>5806506
Oh. Sorry about that, thank you. I'll come back with results soon.

Getting another PG, but this time my friends and I are gonna get together and each build one. Any recommendations for what I should build?

I was thinking of going for the Strike Rouge, but is it similar to the Red Frame, build-wise? I hear they share runners.

Fucking hated SEED Destiny, but I could build a Strike Freedom. Everything else seems to be on someone's maybe-list, so it looks like options are limited.
>>
>>5807213
They share a whole lot of inner frame parts.
>>
>>5807220
I thought so.

Anyone ever build a PG Strike Freedom? I hear it has really bad weight issues.
>>
>>5807197
That's a shame. When you say low quality how bad is it? Using your average hg gundam as a reference point. Thanks.
>>
>>5807213
MkII or bust
>>
How are the Perfect grades in general? I kind of want to get one, but I'm not sure I can justify 200 bucks for what would probably end up being a bare minimum panel line/sticker build.
>>
>>5807227
So the Mk II is good despite its age? How does it compare to the newer ones?

>>5807231
I like to think that every collection needs one in it. The builds are great, the engineering is (usually) ingenious, and the size of a PG makes it very imposing, even next to an mg.

I've been watching gundam for the first time and I thought I'd give gunpla a shot. I just bought pic related.

You think an Mg model is too much to start with? Will I need much things outside the set itself. I'm likely going to get a stand for it.

Gunpla is like Lego. If you can click two parts together you can build the vast majority of the kits, especially anything from the past decade. People tend to just suggest hg for beginners because they're cheaper for testing the waters with the hobby. Just read up on panel lining and nub removal at least and you'll be fine.

And the mg Zaku II 2.0 molds like that one are especially well engineered.

What scribing tools do you guys suggest?

I've been using a compass needle and dental picks, but they leave jagged , gouged lines that taper sharply at the ends.

I also tried x-acto or excel's flat, hook-shaped scriber heads but still the same thing.
>>
>>5807696
Cut the jaws open with a stanley blade.
Glued a piece of runner to the lower jaw
Filled the upper jaw with milliput and drilled holes in it once it had set.
IF I were to do it again I'd put it on a swivel joint.

Local type is part of the MSD series that is meant to be a MSV to Origin. It has more modern relevance and is being moderately more promoted. Not bad for a first attempt. Nice taste in suit too. Next time try learning to topcoat and then go back to topcoat this one. And seam welding. Like that really long line through the middle of the gun, as an example of what you want to fill make disappear.
>>

I handpaint vallejo acrylics and I usually just wait an hour or two before I mask stuff (Or overnight at most). I haven't had any problems, but you probably want to test it somehow before taking my word.

Get the 1/100 Graze custom/ground type. You won't regret it, great kit.

Seriously, why the fuck are the SRW kits so expensive? Fucking Galilnagant is at 7k JPY, yet a more complex kit like Liger Zero exists at a lower price

Made by Koto + No reissues.
>>

Galilnagant came out at that price. And most of the old ones actually have gotten reissues at some point now. It's just a factor of Japanese hobby prices being terrible in general now.

Is Testors dullcote fine for topcoating? Or is that Japanese Mr super Clear better?
>>
>>5809866

Testor's Dullcote is fine. If you're using paints that are otherwise weak to laquers make sure they're cured all the way before spraying.

Never used the Mr.Whatever though, getting that line in the states is a pain.

Self leveling is a beautiful thing in paints.

>>5809866
It's pretty damn good. In the top 4 of flat coats imo. Also readily available in the US.

I want to panel line now that I've got a few kits under my belt, but I've heard that the gundam marker is a little too big for some areas. What's suggested for a beginner?

The Pigma Micron 005 was suggested in the guide as well, but it only comes it black it seems.

Titus is one sexy fucking gundam. I'm probably going to get it's 1/100 MG model next.

Finished up my HG V2 A/B. Pretty fun to do honestly. I did end up painting the shield...because the sticker it came with was yellow, and that was gross. Waiting on the shield to totally dry before doing more pictures.
>>
>>5810297

The mix of gold and yellow looks kinda weird. Is the gold supposed to be different from the yellow? Might be better to make it all gold.
>>
>>5810301
The yellow is normal part of the V2. The gold is anti-beam coated armor from the Assault parts.

Seems to vary, but I might go back and do the yellow in gold.

New to gunpla here. A local friend who is passionate about gunpla and I had a building session last night.

He used Nuln Oil and some paint pen (squeezed some out then dry brushed it on) to make this awesome effect on his model.

How do you guys feel about it and what advice can you offer?
>>
>>5810733
>citadel
>>
>>5810733
Too heavy, he needs to tone it down. HG's are MUCH bigger than Warhammer minis, and in that you need to tone down the effects for them not to look overdone.
>>
So I moved recently and now I don't have the space to use my airbrush and I've been thinking about trying my
very shaky and unsteady
hands at hand painting

And I was wondering, can primer be hand brushed? I currently have Mr Surfacer 1500. That.. that counts as primer, right?

Looks less like a gundam with paint scratches and more like a plastic toy with paint randomly slapped onto it.

The placement of the scratches makes no real sense and ends up looking unrealistic. It's also heavily overdone and the scratches are bigger than a full grown person at that scale.

It also really doesn't help that he didn't bother painting the kit itself first or even using a matte coating to make the kit look less like a plastic toy.

That said, it's always nice to see someone trying to take that next step in modeling. My advice would be to look up some tutorials on how model tank builders go about weathering and adding damage to their kits. There are some simple techniques and there really is an art to it and it can be fun to find your own style.

And if you want to see some god-tier subtle paint chipping/scratches on a gundam model look up some of NAOKI's works.
>>
>>5810800
Honestly, there is an acrylic primer or two that can be handbrushed, but it's going to have nowhere near the adhesion of regular primer, will be thicker, and might not level as nicely. If you can. try to find somewhere you can use a spraycaimer first.

And don't try to handbrush mr. surfacer as a primer. To use it as one you need to thin it first, and it requires lacquer thinner which you can't handbrush because it dries way too quickly and can destroy brushes.
>>
>>5810733
Wear happens primarily on edges and rims where you're most likely to get contact with other objects.

When you sand something what happens? You're likely to round the edges unless you're very careful, even if you go in one direction at a time.

>>
>>5810830
Thanks, I was about to try hand painting using mr surfacer sometime today or tomorrow, I'm glad I asked first.

There's really nowhere for me to use my airbrush or a spray can primer or anything, though. Even if it's thicker and less adhesive, I guess I'll just try and deal with it since I don't have much choice.

I heard hearsay they announced a Sturm Fuhrer there and despite my scouring all the threads found no images of zoid stuff being shown at Koto's booth. It wasnt untill they posted preorder info for the PK Iron Kong that I finally was able to do more digging and discoveredd one obscure image of the Iron Kong being displayed at won fes NO ONE cared to post at all on 4chan. Then furrther found out that the Sturm Fuhrer was just some custom work that I guess won a contest.

TL:DR if this wonfes discussed anything about HMM Zoids, don't expect to get much information about it unless you stumble on just the right blog of someone who gave a shit about the line.

I actually really want to at least paint them, but I moved last month and now I don't have any space at all for airbrushing. I was considering hand brushing, but there doesn't seem to be any good primer that could be painted with a brush. It's been really frustrating, but I guess at least I'm saving money from not buying paint.

I've been wanting to try converting them into the MSV Gyans like the hi-mo and the eos too, but I don't know jack shit about scratch building so I'd probably end up just painting them if I ever get the chance

>>5813891
This anon has the right idea too
>>
>>5813903
>No notion of scratchbuilding
Well, teach yourself. Instead of buying a kit use that for paint, plaplate and putty. I have a backlog but have capped myself until I finish some of the models and I'm learning slowly to scracthbuild. Do little things while starting and work your way up.
>>
>>5813921
I want to, but I don't even know where to begin. What's a good thing to begin with?
>>
>>5813953
Weaponry. Plaplate is already flat, so a melee weapon like a sword will work good because it's mostly flat pieces with some rounded edges. Or you can use it to make a wepon shaft for something you already have. And mold putty into a ball and stick it at the end, to make a mace. Just tty and think in terms of "what materials do I have that I can build off of as bases and what can I make with simple shapes". And putty can be used for emblems, like crafting a logo for the Gyan's shield.
>>
>>5813998
Those are all really great ideas, thanks anon. It's something I've always wanted to do, but just the idea of it just felt so overwhelming that it intimidated me, but I guess I have to start somewhere.

I think I'll skip the massive fuel tanks
they are 15cm long and will just add even more weight, but my main gripe on those parts are the nubs
they are super noticeable and glaring in each of the 3 sections that compose the fuel tanks (nubs on curved surfaces are terribad), Bandai should have made this undergated too after all the effort they put together to make this issue on the rest of the model nonexistant

After I was done with V2 yesterday I figured I'd finally start my MkIII. I was going to take pictures but it started raining and ruined that plan.

If all the Re100s are like this I might have to get more. It's nice and easy construction, like an HG, and more surface detail, but not quite as much as an MG or RG.

I got back into gunpla a week ago.
I have a built Graze, a built Dom-R35, and all these.
$10-20 for a kit is an amazing price. It's quite unfortunate I have horrible impulse control.

I'll be practicing panel lining today and at some point this week I'll try out painting (instead of using stickers), so I'll be sure to blogshit about that here.

Will try and post my progress and what I did to make the mold when I get back home. Sometimes it helps to see how someone makes such nice looking scratch builds from what looks intitially like a pile of scrap glued together.

I don't even understand this attitude. MGs and HGs are the same shit, one just happens to have more pieces than the other.

He's not trying to do a resin GK or something. It's like saying you shouldn't do a 500 piece jigsaw before doing some 50 piece ones. You're still just snapping the pieces together the way the picture tells you.

Been wanting to know this for a while now. Anyone know why the HGUC The O's pipes smell? They're made of this smelly red plastic with an unmistakable odor. I left mine in the garage for a few days and the smell seems to have gone away but if I take a sniff at it the smell's basically still there. The smell filled my entire garage, even. Anyone know how/why this happens?

Some weird plastic blend? I honestly don't know why they would use a different blend to the other ones but that's the most logical explanation.

Hey Gunpla photographers.

I'm taking pictures on my black backdrop, and I keep having an issue where the black is reflective like pic related. It causes the whole picture to look really grainy.

How do I achieve a pure black effect like the one on the right?
>>
>>5816199
Green screen and take it out in post
>>
>>5816300
I know literally nothing about photography but wouldn't that bounce green light all over the models?
>>
>>5816022
Wait what when did it even open in the first place?
>>
>>5816311
How do they avoid the green light in movies? They move the subject away from the screen so there is less reflectivity because it doesn't matter how far away it will be if you're going to edit the background anyway. Also green screens are less reflective than paper because they're felt which reminds me of another solution which is to use felt, reduce lighting and increase ISO and exposure times.
>>
>>5816022
That's a little pricey but OK.

Not digging the armored suit though

>How do I achieve a pure black effect like the one on the right
1. Diffuse the light.
2. Use black backdrop that isn't reflecting the light, e.g. black velour.
3. Move the backdrop away from the subject.

How are you guys brave enough to go out and display your work to the public? I think it's a bit embarrassing because everyone else just has a lot more effort put into their kits.
>>

>>

>>
>>5816971
nobody's going to think any less of you unless you enter some embarrassing abomination that has nubs everywhere or a really shitty paint job
which I'm sure neither are true for whatever you build
>>
>>5816971
>How are you guys brave enough to go out and display your work to the public?
First of all, ignore these chucklefucks that say to stop caring. Think about it: The process of detailing a model is the very act of caring. You care with every snip, brushstroke, or glue drop. It's actually concentrated care, there is so much that goes into the process. Why would you stop caring the minute it's contest time?
Instead anon, consider the following: You only enter a contest when you are confident of your output. You only get confident of your output, when you are capable of realizing if your work is good or not.
Is your work good? Enter the contest. Is your work sub-par? Don't enter the contest.
It really is that easy.
>>
>>5817035
To add to this, the whole point of a contest is competition. Sure, you can compete just to say you did, but the point is to try to win. Does entering a contest with no intent to win make you feel better for some reason? Do you think everyone deserves a gold star?
Or do you want to make a better product than everyone else? That is what the contest is for.
You build for yourself, you enter contests to prove you are better.
>>
>>5816971
Don't enter a competition with the "win or nothing" mindset. Just see it as an opportunity to have fun building a kit (maybe trying out a new product or technique) and chance show off youre technique.

It's also an excellent chance to get feedback on your skills and improve as well as meet other modelers.

And who cares if someone laughs. Gunpla contests are full of mediocre to bad builds. If your being laughed at you're just one of the many. Learn from it and do better and don't let it get to you.

Just don't enter an unpainted snapfit build unless you're under 12 years old.

What we say to stop caring about is winning, not effort. People who go into the build process only caring about winning tend to stress over it, have no fun, and inevitably screw up. Conversely when you're relaxed and having fun you tend to make some of your best work.

Basically it's a hobby. Having fun is the most important part.

On that note I've finished moving the arm pegs on my group build higher so that the titus arms aren't as droopy. I'm going to reinforce them with some styrene tube so they aren't just skinny looking pegs but what's bugging me is the big square gm clown feet. It feels like with these arms on they look out of place but I don't want to use the titus legs. Thoughts?
