It's utterly crazy how expensive figmas are now. Before they were running for $40-$50 including shipping, but now it's more like $65-$80 for one figma with SAL shipping. Not to mention every figma with an averagely elaborate design is now retailing for $75-$90 (Yasuo, Gilgamesh)...GSC/MF are such jews. At this point I'm not looking forward for the God Hand figmas because they'll probably retail for 8,000 yen a piece.
And why does Rayearth specifically need to be more expensive than other recent figma lines? Even Zero Suit Samus, a super popular /v/ character, is almost $8 cheaper. These prices just don't make sense to me.

I hope they don't take this the wrong way, but Nendoroid fans tend to be a bit more casual and would just jump ship if the prices got too high. Strike Witches is great to show the price difference since they've been getting steady releases for GSC's whole career.

l think it is partially because the quality (engeneering, sculpt) got a lot better in the last years.

One example (l own) can be the first black rock shooter, compared with recent anime girls.
l loved her back when she came out, but comparing her with recent stuff, she's honestly not that good.

At the same time this doesn't justify this much of a price change, especially with the lack of accessories.

l find 9000 for a figma unbelievable, but honestly, 6000-7000 is not that unreasonable, keeping in mind the better quality, along the fact that in 10 years the price for anything is bound to increase.

We're lucky we still get barebone figs like osomatsu, the blank bodies, ted etc. at a more reasonable price.

l'm not defensing gsc's jew moves, those suck no matter what.

Slan: 7800 yen IF they don't give her alt wings or add more complex joints to her wings. 8-800-9800 yen if they do.
Femto: 9800 yen for the base body without the Behelit base. 12,000 yen for base included.
Void: 9800 yen because he is getting two big ass cowls with different sculpts, if hollow on inside may be 8000 yen.
Ubik and Conrad: Might come packed together as a figfix release, probably be 7800+ yen. If they come separate it would be 4000 yen for one and 6000 yen for the other.

However the longer they wait to start production the worse it will get. Japan is talking about increasing their stimulus plan this month which means future toys not currently negotiated will go up in price even more. The exchange rate will briefly get better - good time to fill missing holes in collection on older releases, re-releases, etc - but it will NOT last.

Simply put, if they wait another 4-5 months to open pre-orders there is a good chance that prices will have gone up across all lines by another 1,000-3,000 yen. Then by the time the figures actually release the stimulus effect will have disappeared and we'll be back at 100 yen = $1 meaning already expensive figures will be $10-30 more expensive. That's where I got my 10,000-12,000+ yen estimate from.

I'm at the point where I don't even preorder anymore and just wait for sales since almost everything gets discounted a few months after release these days, unless it's some popular Nintendo/Love Live shit.

Not that guy but considering a figure like this used to cost $35-40 shipped? Yeah it's expensive. It's a 25-70% price increase depending on the exchange rate when paying. That shit adds up fast the larger someone's collection is so things that were easy hype/impulse buys now become a pass. Especially with the exchange rate being so damn volatile and price hikes becoming more aggressive as of late.

To quantify it, someone with a reasonable $100 a month toy budget basically loses out on 6-14 releases per year. $1200 used to get you between 30-34 figures at this price point, now you're lucky to get 20-24. God forbid you want to buy one of the more expensive releases like Gilgamesh. If you live in Japan or some country with a shit exchange rate things are much more dire.

People really forget the contents and/or quality of older releases, blinded by the prince increase.

Take any old anime girl figma, and you'll see how shit were faces back then, expressionless, old hands were crap, sometimes they even didnt have the wrist joint.
The amount (and quality) of accessories has always been fluctuating between releases.
Except for a few figures, l think they always include all the character needs.

5. Many of the improvements made do not drive up the cost of manufacturing. The improved face decals are applied the same way, they just look more accurate and lively.

Have figma improved compared to some of the older releases? Sure. Are these improvements behind the higher costs? No, not at all. Chinese factories are raising prices at the same time the yen has less purchasing power. Plastic cost is rising as well. These were already niche products and now they are selling less total units to Japanese collectors because they cost too much. So prices have to go up even more to keep profit margins where they need to be. It's why something like a Ferrari costs so much, not because it's actually worth $250,000.

This also explains why there is more bullshit web shop exclusive accessories. Retailers take a 50% cut of the profits so it's in their best interest to convince people to buy direct from their web shop when possible.

At the end of the day the truth doesn't really matter when it comes to someone with a strict budget. Yeah it'd be nice if they were fully informed but it's not going to make someone buy something they just can't afford. Nor does it make their frustration any less valid when they used to be able to afford these things. I fully understand the economics involved but it's not going to change my opinion on some of the more expensive figma. Hell, I wanted Gilgamesh forever but I can't justify the $80-90 shipped he's been fluctuating between. He'd need to be in the $70-75 range for me to pull the trigger which would mean the exchange rate would have to be 125 again or better.

The frustration is valid even if some people misunderstand the reasons for the price increases.

That's a way better price than I assumed we'd be getting. The one with the base is ridiculously expensive though, 4000 yen more + shipping rape. I assume it'll also end up a web shop exclusive. If it doesn't I may stick one in my AmiAmi order then order a regular one as well just so I have a spare laying around and don't have to pay $200-400 later because figma almost never get re-releases and prices just keep going up forever.

Max Factory doesn't do re-releases like Bandai because they basically have "unlimited pre-orders" available now. Factory time is a limited commodity and this kind of pre-order system can cause a ripple effect that causes all kinds of delays. It's also very likely that anyone who was interested bought a copy and market demand is minimal outside of the few who couldn't afford it or found out about it later.

With that said Max Factory did do a few re-releases like Saber and Rider but these did NOT have unlimited pre-orders. So the actual demand on them at the time was still high because the pre-orders had sold out within minutes like Bandai still does. Samus and Link also got some re-releases due to massive western demand and licensing shenanigans that prevented proper distribution in America for the first run.

I doubt we will get a Guyver re-release because the figure wasn't that well liked and it didn't sell amazingly. Guts it'd make more sense to just create another variant with new armor to fit the new TV series. The only re-release i'm really convinced we'll get at some point is Saber 2.0 because she sold out fast and the demand on her was still really high even a few weeks later when prices started to jump up. Maybe Archer too but it's doubtful.

The Bandai system has it's drawbacks but the re-releases are definitely more friendly to collectors on strict budgets and late comers who get into the game later on. Collecting old figma will make you go fucking broke.

I was thinking just do that again for those characters, but so far the only high enough demand was western one huh. Yeah Link kept getting reissues so I figure other characters could sell just as much. Samus was just once I think. Kirito and Asuna got theirs too, they adopted the later system the first time around.

Guyver and MF go way back, I think it's popular enough for a second run to go along II and III.

Made to order will likely leave few who didn't get it, but time since then and newer side characters, I think creates enough demand.

Of course you have to weigh with brand new characters for which will sell better, but sales of the new could increase with the right reissues too.

I was surprised Kaiyodo could pull off all those Legacy releases, Woody got like his 6th rerelease. Just want something like that with figma someday.

2.0 is lingo for the current figma design, but it's pretty misleading. It'd be more accurate to say we are on the 3rd major revision to the basic figma design at the moment. You can pretty easily mark the eras of figma by the kind of hand pegs and wrist joints that are used. Early figma had ball peg wrists that easily broke. Then came the wrists that just slide in with no fuss. Now we have actual ball joints separate from the hands themselves which clip right into them.

I can't speak for the rest of the country, but California gets imports usually within 4-5 days for EMS, 1-2 weeks for SAL. USPS Might drag a little bit once it's in their hands, but as far as EMS goes I've never gone more than a week waiting for it.
