I'm mostly buying them to update (according to my tastes, of course) the Masters a bit, and reuse the leftover parts (masks, most weapons) and builds for other characters. And I'm very excited to see how the new torso design works.
Overall, last year's masks were better as updates of the 01 masks. Some weapons were better too, though I find the new crystal blade pretty intriguing. But there are a lot of concepts (builds, color schemes, etc) I want to reuse.
And I love the Unity feature, so I'm going to buy at least some Creatures.

And this. These sets have lots of good parts and recolors. Maybe more so than the 2015 sets.

Unlike a few of you guys I absolutely lo e the 2016 sets and the fact that they are built like MOCs with custom technic torsos/upper arms on some is just awesome. (Creatures are also based because functions and unique non-humanoid designs).

That being said, I am concerned about the function. Looking at how it operates I see absolutely no way for them to add friction so that the entire upper body doesn't flop around with gravity like 2003 Makuta.

Finally got a new camera.

So here's my WIP Okoto Nui-Rama. I basically used LoSS's body and rearranged the gears to give the wings a flapping motion. I'm not sure what colors to go with.

Here's that Makuta I've made for the anon asking in the last thread. The MoCo and Onua's armor/studs are all he needs to be finished.

I'm almost positive Onua's studs are trans purple because they've got the same exact bluish tint as his shells while his armor decal is quite obviously the same purple as this year.

I personally think all the mask designs (with maybe the exception of Onua's) are really great and some of my favorite designs period. I can see the issues with the blended silver in the back though, while I personally don't mind it especially since I thought it looked cool on the Metrutoran, I can see how it looks out of place, especially on Tahu since he is the only one without any other silver on his color scheme.

However, one benefit of the gold masks being blended the elemental transparent color (t.orange for fire, t.light blue for ice, t. dark blue for water, etc.) is that the silver trio will no longer look so weird with their golden masks on, since it will blend into their color scheme better (except maybe on pohatu because that shade of green is ugly), then again this causes issues with the creatures masks not being gold on three of them but I will have to wait to see how that looks before passing judgement. So far we have only seen united Tahu and Kopaka, who have gold creatures. I am holding onto the possibility that the silver creatures on the gold masks of the other three may have some neat contrast look.

Grievous is the best set by an insane margin, but as a parts pack he is kinda lacking unless you like big tan parts (good source of limb pieces though), other than him they are all more or less the same parts-wise, just get whichever has the colors you want.

Depends on your building style.

If you're a CCBS-heavy guy, I'd recommend Greebles or Luke (for those extra long bones).

If you're more of a Technic fella, go for Obi-Wan or Vader.

Cody and Jangles are a decent mix of both, so the decision comes down to which colorscheme you like better.

Still not sure how I feel about Ketar, I can get past the wonky tail design, and getting a scorpion with leg articulation is nice, but the claws look really awkward, besides the fact that they are spears, not claws, the way they come down from the back looks kinda weird (though this might just be because there is no pose of him with both arms down, its possible that with both arms down, the crystal armor will give it some nice coverage and it could look kinda cute picking things up with its two little spear hands)

Super hyped for the Uniters, the fact that they have custom torsos is what really sells them for me, not only are they completely different in terms of limb design and armor coverage and stuff like the Masters, but their torso construction is also completely different from one to the other (with a few similarities like the armor piece on the back and the chest piece on the front but whatever), I also like the custom upper arms on some (though really not sure about Lewa's upper arms yet).

Moving the tail to face the left or right activates a .5m gear to make his arms move. The tail's base moves out of the way as the arm turns so it can't obstruct its movement. Pretty clever, actually.

Despite Gali's trans dark blue shells, her and Akida's elemental color (Gali's crystal add-ons and blade and Akida's head) still appears to be trans light blue.

I don't mind it, that means you can build a fully goldless Kopaka and Melum. I'd try it, at least to experiment with it.

Do remember that story and set design teams are separate, it was like that in G1 too, from what we were to understand from Greg, the set design team had very little context as to what they were making other than 'six toa but underwater this time' or 'spooky bats' or what not, and the story details were applied to them after. It's quite possible the G2 set design team are simply given the basic premise of what they are supposed to make, make it, and only know enough of the story for these designer videos.

Well, it's not like both movies were made by the exact same team of people. Foodfight!'s production was a complete disaster even aside from the files getting lost, but TLR was obviously handled way more competently, and it didn't have Lawrence Kasanoff meddling with it, like he did with Foodfight!. They also put way more effort into making the CGI presentable, and likely had better tech to make it so, even if the finished movie does show some obvious signs of corner-cutting.

He did say something along the lines of not wanting to carry over the writing he did for the Star Wars books into his Bionicle work. On one hand, this sounds like a bummer because when folks were bashing G2's story and world-building, many fans would point at this guy's previous works, saying "look, he worked on tons of SW books, Bionicle' s gonna get the same level of care/depth/whatever". And when the book actually came out, it wasn't exactly what they were hoping for, and it turned out his experience with the SW books doesn't mean much when it comes to Bionicle.

On the other hand, maybe we won't have to worry about him adopting Greg's "I always liked Lovecraft and edgy superhero comics, I'm gonna put the same stuff into Bionicle regardless of whether it fits" mentality.

Asymmetrical Nuva symbols on the masks... Kopaka's I can sort of live with due to the scope already being asymmetrical, but Onua's only reason is they placed a tumor where it would normally go and the molded symbols were just an afterthought?

Also still concerned Gali, Lewa and Pohatu's united forms will have gold mask bottoms and silver creature head chrome domes.

2016 sets from highest rated to lowest from first look:

Kopaka=Lewa>Gali>Onua>Tahu=Umarak>Pohatu
Akida>Uxar>Ikir>Terak=Melum>Ketar

Unfortunately I'm not a huge fan of the stone sets this year, which is a shame because Pohatu is one of my favourite Toa. I'm sure he'll look better if the translucent shells on his forearms are replaced, but at the moment it's too much in one place. Ketar looks kind of strange as well, what with being a scorpion but having sword hands.

On the other hand Lewa looks great, and shows Gali Mistika that excessive silver can work well if you're not just plain ugly.All the masks look absolutely top notch; real effort to bring their detail up to the same levels as the Mask of Creation. I do also love that even the small sets are imbued with gear functions - but Melum and Terak get points knocked off for being twins. I guess one's a mole and one's a little ice bear, but come on LEGO.

My opinion is different, in many ways, but honestly I feel that they are all solid enough for my to not really feel like your taste is bad or anything. None of the sets are really something I would call objectively bad at all, with only a couple of the creatures being at all iffy for me simply due to weird poses that mean I dont really understand their builds yet.

I think it's supposed to be crystal, not 'hair' as much as we like to call it that, the sets have a crystal theme with the crystal armor pieces and the crystal spear weapon pieces. Not sure if the reason Ekimu added a bunch of crystals so them will be explained in the story, but that seems to be the reason for the masks being that way.

Correction: THIS is why you don't moc when your high. If it helps I also wrote an intricate backstory that explains why his arms are two different colors and why he has a human head.

Actually not a terrible moc - I was surprised I could make a fairly decent torso while baked like a cake. But the legs and arms I really fucked up on - probably going to rebuild those later.
