Wanna know the best part? We tend to put into vote what's the next campaign and next system we use.

99% of the time it's PF and when I ask why we can't try something new, it's always "Pathfinder does it better." or "I don't wanna learn new system when it can easily be homebrewed in Pathfinder".

The only reason 5th is allowed was because it was to them, a dumbed down version of PF.

If it wasn't similar at all to PF or any of the other D20 stuff, they would have said no.

Sell me on high elves.
I'm rolling a wizard for a new campaign and high elf is clearly one of the best choices, but I've always found roleplaying one unappealing.
If they live so long that day to day shit doesn't matter to them, why wouldn't a high elf just be an aloof asshole about everything?

Because adventuring doesn't just concern day-to-day shit. Most adventures concern either significant threats, which a high elf would be able to see the significance of in terms of future consequences, or a promise of treasure, which appeals to everyone.

a better way to phrase it would be "the same rules that apply to creating PCs don't apply to creating NPCs". in other words, it's entirely appropriate to make an NPC that is a mash-up of druid and barbarian features who casts using his constitution. he doesn't have to be a specific "rules legal" build you could replicate as a player.

and because 5e doesn't have NPC classes you shouldn't be handing out class levels to every peasant, blacksmith or town guard either (unless they have other experience). a peasant isn't a level 4 commoner like 3e, they're just a statblock.

Now that his kids are older he wanted to start getting into it so he could run a game for them.

I sent him my extra 5e books and didn't hear back from him for a week or so.

I get a call one day

"Hey man, I'm looking through these books and it seems familiar enough, but I can't find how they do THACO in this edition."

I was like "oh dude...."

As somebody who has played in/run a couple dozen different systems over the years this always frustrates me. I thought this kind of thinking died back when OGL caused a mass extinction in the RPG industry but I guess PF has allowed that to continue.

They don't even have GURPS on store shelves now that they've switched to print on demand/PDFs as their business model, though that's partially because things have shifted away from systems that crunchy apart from Pathfinder it seems.

My party once found an underground salamander city that was acting as a base for a adamantine mining operation. It was at the convergence of ley lines linked to the four primary elemental planes. The party decided that they wanted to stop this and chose to fuck with the convergence. They threw the elemental balance out of whack and and with an explosion that overcharged the main caster with magical energy and created elemental adamantine crystals throughout the cavern system. It also opened up cracks into the water table and flooded the whole cavern. They managed to escape by the skin of their teeth and drowned every salamander in the city, some 5000 dudes. I just gave them the level after that, and the caster got some neat new powers.

They encounter Dark Lord who is having existential crisis.
He will not be hostile and if they try to attack, he will effortlessly imprison them in forcefield for several hours.
Then he will tell them of his life, his rise to power, his many great goals and recent realization ho vain they all are.
PCs can try to reason with him or intrigue further, but regardless of their reasoning or persuasion, he will proceed to off himself.
By the logic of being only creature that interacted with him around the time of his demise, PCs get all the 13500XP for his "defeat".

Dark Lord resurrects some time later and with his newfound motivation becomes a legitimate threat to the realm that PCs have to stop. He will remember this encounter.

Have both combatants roll persuasion (Dex) v perception. Winning the persuasion gets you a hit. First to 3 hits and you lose.

>Jousting
Normal roll to hit, roll athletics (con) to stay mounted. DC starts at 10, increases by 1 each time you get hit.

>Iaido
Opposed reflex saves. DC is 10+Dex Mod of the attacker. Losing by 5 gets a clean hit, first to get hit 3 times loses.

>Mage Duels
I have no idea, I feel like they should just battle it out normally. Assume both sides have counterspell prepared and use arcana checks constantly to determine spell level. Maybe do Arcana vs Deception checks to fake the level of spell being cast. A sorcerer casting spells subtly wouldn't even allow his opponent a check.

Am I the only one that just dislikes the idea of giving sorcerer spell points? I find that it screws with the martial vs caster divide by allowing them to spam their best spells more effectively, without actually changing most of the things that make them bad.
>>
>>55327107
1 stage of Exhaustion per hitting 0 hp, the second this was implemented my players stopped feeling invincible, without anyone actually dying yet.
>>
>>55328232
The point is that you also combine spell points with sorcery points, so that sorcerers have more choice between "more spells" and "more metamagic". It doesn't do anything to the martial/caster divide since this change alone doesn't make sorcerers better than wizards.

You have it wrong, anon. Casters aren't better than martials because they have big flashy fireballs, they're better than martials because they have so many more problem solving abilities once the combat is over, especially charisma casters, the biggest cancer to ever grace D&D.

>>
I once heard of a DM that, after all was said and done in terms of racial ASIs and point-buy setup, gave all male PCs +1 to the physical stats and -1 to the mental stats, and female PCs -1 to physical and +1 to mental.

Is that as moronic as I think it is? The guy telling me about it seemed to think it was reasonable, but personally I think it just makes people play certain genders for certain classes. This game ain't a realism sim, after all.

Captcha: wade bathroom. Why tho.
>>
>>55328560
Well I guess you could quicken one and twin the other, but that's going to drain your points absurdly fast, especially if you also use empowered. Spending 5 points per turn is fine for maxed cantrip spam.
>>
>>55327142
I tried spell points for sorcs in the game im running and both i and the player running the sorc loves it. I also gave him all the metamagics at level 3 and as a 9th level sorc he pretty much metamagics every spell he casts
>>
>>55328585
It's really stupid and autistic. Why on earth they'd assume that sexual dimorphism is exactly the same in a fantasy world (or why it's even worth a stat change in our own world) is beyond me.

If someone wants that kind of ridiculous pseudo-simulationism, they really shouldn't bother with the most streamlined and narrative edition of all fucking D&D.
>>
>>55328405
Yeah, my players just feel like, and I quote:

> It messes with the balance of combat
> It makes every fight an up hill battle

My response was that that was the problem. Hitting 0 hp shouldn't even be a consideration in combat tactically or part of that formula. It should be avoided at all cost, not just some minor setback.
>>
>>55328267
Is it conventionally done by combining the two pool numbers, e.g. a sorcerer 10 has 74 (64+10) points, or do they have to make do with the 64?

>>55328420
Maybe the power boost of spell points for sorcerers should be compensated for by disallowing metamagic on cantrips? You make a good point, it seems to me that keeping sorc and spell points separated is maybe the right idea.
>>
>>55328627
See that's what I said.
>>
>>55328612
Damn, in my game I allow sorcs to prepare their metamagic options each day instead of being locked in to only a few. Also, if you think you might ever reach level 20 with them, I'd suggest changing the sorcerer's 20th level ability to allowing them to use metamagic on the spells of other creatures. I've never had a level 20 sorc yet but I think that would create some awesome shenanigans

Aspiring GM here! Anyone want to help fill out the blank spaces of the map? Looking for some fun ideas. I have a general idea of the setting so far.

>Elven Reclaimers seeking to revive a dead stone titan. It's a massive humanoid and they need help to find and retrieve the pieces. Most of the neighboring factions may have a piece of the titan by chance.
>Lizardfolk are another neutral faction ruled over by a benevolent couatl. Their jungle is slowly being subsumed by the constant harassment of the dragon.
>"Get out of my swamp, REE!" Bullywugs are the last neutral faction, hostile at first but can be reasoned with.
>Green dragon terrorizes everyone, except the subservient goblins who offer it tribute.
>Goblin pirates are pure evil and carved out a massive port city in the jagged coastline.
>Kua-Toa and Merrow hate everyone, especially their closest neighbors.
>>
Do your settings really take anything from the books other than the races, monsters, spells, and gameplay mechanics? How original should they be?
>>
>>55328602
Early on you don't do that, you do it late when you have a shit ton of spell points to sit on, early on empowering every cantrip and twinning haste once is enough. I guess my problem with spell points is that it makes the already viable ways to play sorcerer better without really helping those that were bad.

So you're saying that later in the game, when you know a bunch of high level spells, metamagics, and have a shitload of points, you spend all your time in combat doing the most mind-numbingly boring cantrip spam to maximize your damage?
It's your game, but I really don't give a single shit about what you think.

My point is that it buffs the most mind numbingly boring way to play sorcerer, with little to no benefit to more interesting ones. There's very little benefit to social oriented subtle builds. Buffing doesn't really care since most good buffs are concentration. You can't even nova as hard since you only get one of each spell higher than 5th. All the while your spell list is still ass.

How? If you're doing this at high level, you'll have plenty of spell slots to convert to sorcery points to do your boring ass cantrip spam anyway.
>without really helping those that were bad
Meanwhile, the sorcs with the change are free to use metamagic more often without feeling like they're "over budgeting" or wasting their metamagic on non-optimal spells. I have a feeling you don't really know what you're talking about.

>You can't even nova as hard since you only get one of each spell higher than 5th
Oh no, one less 6th level spell AT LEVEL 19 and one less 7th level spell AT LEVEL 20. WHAT A FUCKING HORROR! WHATEVER WILL I DO WITH THIS MASSIVELY INCREASED FLEXIBILITY THAT I GET AS A TRADEOFF FOR A NERF THAT 99% OF PLAYERS WILL NEVER SEE???

>>
Give me two magic items to give to a death domain cleric and oathbreaker paladin that my 4th level PC's will be fighting
>>
>>55328866
Without spell points it's way less efficient to cantrip spam at high level since the conversion wasn't one to one. Your change barely helps the areas sorcerer needed help and makes the absolute best way to play them spamming fire bolt all day. All the while not fixing the metamagics that are completely Garbo and not giving them an expanded spell list two of sorcerers biggest problems. By the time they reach the point that they can freely use their metamagics all the goddamm time it's already time for max damage cantrip spam. Because you were taking the only three metamagics that aren't subtle worth taking anyways.

>All the while not fixing the metamagics that are completely Garbo and not giving them an expanded spell list two of sorcerers biggest problems

I don't like spell points. For various reasons, the fact that it's continuously spouted as the go to buffs to sorcerers, that everyone needs to implement as if it fixes all of sorc problems is one of them. My posts were simply me explaining that why I didn't like spell points and why I did not think it was worth using on its own if at all. If me explaining why I think a system breaks the game for what I consider to be minimal benifit to most other play styles makes me a minmaxing cuntbag when I specifically stated that I dislike that then I don't know what to say to you.

Pick a wizard school or cleric domain that fits your character's natural aptitude, when attaining spell level 2, 4, 6 and 8 you select a spell from that school or domain to add to your spells known, the spell chosen must be of a level you can cast

Reskin a club for the basic stats (1d4, bludgeoning, light)
Have them be a pair of items that are OK independently but work well in tandem.
Have the right-hand one be a +1 weapon, and if it hits, the left-hand one gets advantage on its roll (which doesn't get proficiency bonus). The left-hand weapon also does +1d4 thunder damage. Say that it's more powerful, heavier, and therefore harder to hit with unless the other caestus, which is in tune with it, nails the same target.

Gets kinda powerful with a class that has multiattack, but it's still just 1d4 or 2d4, so it's not so bad. Let them only fill 1 attunement slot and I think you're OK.

If you want something more powerful, say the right one is one of those pauldron-sleeve things like pic related (but metal)

What would you consider the best "dominator"/enchanter type character. One that can mind control, manipulate, etc. other creatures.

Don't worry, not planning on ever doing such a thing to other party members. But I enjoy this archetype a lot in other games.

Lore bard seems like a decent choice.
Archfey warlock is cool but seems more damage focused since I'll mostly EB turret. Although, friends + mask of many faces could be fun to abuse.
Knowledge cleric certainly seems mind controlly.

Favorites? Anything interesting to try?

If you allow them to reroll the damage dice as with great weapon fighting style, then it could potentially very strong, yes.
The damage die of the weapon itself doesn't actually matter that much >>55330233
The sneak attack is the issue.
>>
Most fun cleric archetype?
>>
>>55330253
It'd be 1 more damage for the Arcane Trickster attack one time, Booming Blade, Disengage build, and still less damage compared to dual wielding for normal rogues. Without heavy it can't be used for Great Weapon Master, so it's hard to abuse outside of Great Weapon Fighting which could let you incrementally gain more and more damage on sneak attacks as you gain more dice, but also require at least 1 level of multiclass.
>>
>>55330148
Samurai's level 3 feature is using a bonus action to gain advantage on attacks and resistance to bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage until the end of your next turn. You can use it 3 times a short rest.
Level 7 feature is RP stuff giving you a bonus from WIS in checks to persuade or please a noble or person of high stature.
Level 10 is gaining proficiency in WIS saves, or INT or CHA if you already have WIS save proficiency.
15 allows you to give up advantage on an attack if you had it in exchange for using a bonus action to immediately attack that target again.
Capstone allows you to take a bonus turn if you get reduced to 0 HP before going unconcious once per long rest.

It's some good shit, and it fits with their martial ordering and now vaguely Eastern style.
I already have a few Mystics anyhow.

I thought the "player characters as lycanthropes" box in the Monster Manual would make a PC wayyy overpowered, so I reworked it into this.

Yea/nay?

The "Bark At The Moon" part is just so I can fuck with the group every so often.

"You've all infiltrated the glamorous ball and disguised yourselves as nobles so that you may attempt to glean information whilst hob-nobbing with — oh wait, Gunther falls to the floor and starts panting. Roll Constitution saving throw."
>>
>>55330358
transformation only lasts 1 minute? thats pretty shitty. I get why you did it, but there are other ways to balance it. make it 8 hours with no option to revert back. Sure you get a massive boost in combats, but you're going to have problems dealing with the local villagers, who are going to report that your party is palling around with a monster in the woods. If you kill them, now there's a hunt for the wandering monsters on the loose. etc. etc. etc. RP solves 9/10s of all balance issues.

So I was thinking I'd like to play an unarmored swordsman.

What if you literally took a fighter archetype and replaced the lvl 3 feature with:
- Unarmored defense (no shields either) 10+Dex+Wis
- When using a melee weapon that is not heavy or special, can use Dexterity

How would the balance match up with the official archetypes?

Non-revised Kensei allows you to use any weapon, even a greatsword or maul, it just sacrifices some things and is dumb with being deliberate about "Kensei weapons are not monk weapons", but if you don't wanna punch and shit it's probably not that big a deal.

despite what those pills claim, you'll always be within punching distance while you are thrusting.
>>
>>55330606
You DO NOT kick and punch between sword strikes. Their effective range is nothing alike. If you can slash with a sword, you're too far to punch (or even kick); if you're close enough to punch, you're too close to slash.
I know it seems to make sense, but in reality it doesn't.

You can be forgiven for thinking all swords are the same because you've probably never used one. Swords varied from stabbing weapons (e.g. rapiers), to cutting/sawing weapons (e.g. katanas), to chopping weapons (e.g. kopesh), to slashing weapons (e.g. sabers).
Knowledge, son.
>>
>>55330717
>Literally an explanation of how unarmed techniques are used to reposition your opponent so you can stab them
>>
>>55330746
yes, largely because in real life, a punch isn't as lethal as a sword.
But even still knowing punches and kicks aren't as good as a sword, they are still used combined with a sword. Now imagine if you COULD do as much damage as a sword with your kicks/punches
>>
>>55330761
Because of reach reasons, you'd still use your unarmed attacks as a secondary weapon/last resort, not purposely try to weave them in between "sword attacks."
>>
>>55330785
>you'd still use your unarmed attacks as a secondary weapon/last resort, not purposely try to weave them in between "sword attacks."

>>
>>55330785
>swing sword
>Enemy parry? Punch.
>Enemy dodge? Kick.

bruh, there are kicks and punches that dont require you to be in a straight and upright position when you do it, there are some specifically made to travel distances.
>>
>>55330825
and likewise, there are sword strikes meant for when you are close, otherwise all sword fights would end in hugfests
>>
>>55330805
Which is why I want an unarmored fighter.

As a kensei I'd be punching EVERY FUCKING TURN as a bonus action, sometimes as an attack action too if I want the extra AC.

>>55330566
Quarterstaff is a d8 monk weapon if I'm not mistaken
>>
>>55330825
This is inaccurate.
>swing sword
>enemy parry? better fucking parry the riposte that's inevitably coming, you don't have the time to close in and try to punch them
>enemy dodge? if they dodged backwards, they're too far for a kick; if they dodged sideways, attack them again if using edged weapon or parry the inevitable counterattack if not
Naturally, these also depend on whether you're wearing armor, but if you're an unarmored fighter, you ABSOLUTELY shift to defense if your attack doesn't connect.

Chops are more top-heavy. Think meat cleaver - their center of balance is farther away from the handle. They're meant to cleave through something and keep going out the other side.
>>
>>55330973
Hacking in to armor as opposed to just making a nice and wide cut?

No, dumbass, I use a katana to describe a "sawing" sword because a katana's swing involves a pull-back motion. This is very different from the swing of an arming sword, and exceedingly different from the swing of a khopesh.

I wouldn't necessarily say that. It's more about the center of balance for the motion.
>>
>>55331033
I'm too tired to go much into detail, but my problem with mercer's "balance" is he typically balances powerful abilities by giving drawbacks. It doesn't really fit the design of 5e at all.
>>

I don't think mercer's homebrew is bad, and it's certainly not worse than a lot of the hot garbage that's tossed around, I just don't like his style when it comes to homebrew mechanics.
