Think I've settled on my Relictor "Smash and Grab" force.

Chaos Marine Battalion 1000 points, Renegade Tactics

Chaos Lord with Black Mace and Plasma Pistol
Chaos Lord on Bike with Bolt Pistol and MURDER SWORD
CSM x 10 with 2 Plasma Guns and a Power Fist on the Aspiring Champ
CSM x 5 with Missile Launcher and Power Sword on the Aspiring Champ
CSM x 5 with Missile Launcher and Power Sword on the Aspiring Champ
Terminators x 5 with Combi-Bolters and Chainfists
Chaos Bikers x 5 with 2 Flamers and a Combi Flamer

Comes out to 999 points (which is nice as if I ever do have them break and go fully Chaos they'll be allied with a Tzeentch Daemon detachment). Plan is to rush the enemy with the Flamer bikers thanks to advance + charge with the Murder Lord backing them; he should tear through MEQs well and of course terrify one specific enemy. I also plan on having him be an outlet for extra Mortal Wounds using the Daemon Shell stratagem, as its a very fluffy thing for a Relictor to do. The CSM squads and main lord hold the middle and the Terminators get teleported in to either support the bikers or threaten tanks with their Chainfists. I know Chainfists are overcosted, but fluffwise I want them in as they're the designated vault openers.

Honestly I'll probably keep this as a small little force for fun, but I would like to fit in a Sorcerer and Vindicator if I do expand, the former because it fits well thematically and would be good support, the latter because it continues the vault busting theme.

The only thing I haven't settled on is a Warlord Trait; I'll probably go the Exalted Champ one on the Black Mace Lord for the extra attack, as he'll be my main defender for my backline and could use another swing.
>>

Part fluff, going to use a couple of spare chaosy looking swords for the Power Sword Sgts, part because I had a few points left over and might as well spend them on something, especially if they have to deal with deep strikers and the Lord is off elsewhere. I don't expect it to make a big difference, but there isn't much else to do with 8 points.

Captain Teams up with the Libbies and the Veterans as bodyguard for a "deathstar-esque" (not really very killy since veterans are only 2A each).
Ironclads can run'n'gun because meltas are assault. The Techpriest fixes them. Also, T9 Dreads with the Libbies "Might of hero's" power.
Tacsquads have some plasma, can chill in deployment zone for area denial and cap objectives while razorbacks give heavy fire support, or redeploy to the midfield for rapid fire range.
Bikes can contest/grab objectives, and shoot shit, and be B I K E S.
Honestly, White Scar Chapter Tactics would be more fluffy, but them damn Smurfs are great for bikes.

Just needs a point hike really. I don't mind him being as powerful and useful as he is, he SHOULD be a big deal, but he's just too good for what you pay for him.

Thats only really a big problem when he's used in small games though, and people who take him there are normally cunts anyway.

I'll be interested to see if every Codex gets something roughly comparable to him in power level though; obviously there is the Primarchs, but what would say, Dark Eldar or Tau get?

If she has such a good grasp of the rules already, play a properly balanced game against her using armies of actual equal power (not power ratings or points (although ensure that they are also the same points so she can't call bullshit), but not the last edition equivalent of tzeentch summoning spam VS fluffy ork list).
It's no problem if she wins, but fight for it, make her work, because properly balanced games that are close at the end are actually the most fun IMO.

Ravenor is still better than the majority of Black Library, but it's more hit and miss than Eisenhorn

Lots of long sections where it's just not that interesting

Eisenhorn is about the radicalisation of a moderate, turning into the thing he used to fight against whilst crossing the line at the cost of his own standards and morals to protect the imperium

Ravenor is about....err....mind bullets and drugs?

I assume so. Just look at how many extra weapons you get in, say, a box of Putrid Blightkings, so a ton of additional weapons aren't unlikely, especially with the new "all options must be included in the box" mentality.

As others have said Ravenor has a different feel than Eisenhorn, but is still worth reading.

The Bequin book was, IMO, fucking amazing, but no word if it'll ever get sequels. Definitely read it after the Ravenor series though, as it picks up after the end of the Ravenor series.

Also, side note, Abnett has said in a Q&A session that Harlon Nayl is his self insert. Take from that what you will.

Do you follow the sept and chapter iconography guidlines, ensuring that despite your custom color scheme, your tactical marines have an Arrow, and your shas'o swaps the sept colors? Yeah; I understand the reasoning behind not dropping everything all at once for purposes of getting people to buy stuff, but it really didn't help an already lopsided campaign.

Still, I had fun with it, probably because I never took it seriously and just saw it as an excuse for some new scenarios and match ups. I do hope they make campaigns a bit more frequent in the future.

I'm not against using named characters but it's best to keep them out of your games unless this is some kind of special occasion. Because 40k is all about the player; you have all of these different factions, and sub factions, and potential branches of those sub-factions, and to commit yourself to someone else's story can be fun for a bit, but it's best to follow your passion. But you're not the guy who's writing these characters, so the idea of you playing out a slice of their story makes you feel like you have to keep things fairly mundane. You know that it can't kill them or affect them like a custom character, they're just static. You can walk a few steps with them, maybe play a few games' worth of a story, but past that you're just using them as a glorified chess piece. "Oh, you brought Magnus. That's a tough unit to beat." No narrative there.

But I accept GW's canon. Even the parts I hate I accept. And that's why I'm afraid that one day they're just going to write something SO uncompromisingly bad that I can't downplay it and I just have to play 40k the way I play Age of Sigmar... as a side hobby that I don't really care about anymore.

Easy is too strong a word, especially for some armies and especially against a smart player. But it is doable in general, yes.

I think removing revive is the right answer, I don't even know why he has it. If they wanted a fluff reason for him not to be killed in random skirmishes than just say he has a teleporter built into his armor that returns him to safety if he's critically injured.

Here's a preview of what we're testing right now.

Each god can gain command points under a certain condition. This is tied to a special god specific rule on the units. Khorne gains more command points than the other gods, but the other gods have really strong psychic powers to compensate.

Khorne units gain command points whenever they slay a model in close combat, or are slain in close combat.
Slaanesh units gain command points whenever they use a weapon with a damage characteristic of 2 or greater, or are slain by the same thing.
Tzeentch units gain command points whenever they roll a 9. Tzeentch units have lots of ways to roll 2d6.
Nurgle Daemons gain command points whenever a unit takes an unsaved wound, but resists it with a FNP equivalent. (within 12 inches of them).
You only gain one command point per event,

Command point costs are increased relative to similar stratagems in other armies. For instance, a stratagem that costs 1cp in CSM might costs 2CP in daemons.

Some stratagems:
Khorne: 3CP during enemy's assault phase. Target unit must charge the nearest enemy unit. It rolls 3d6 and chooses the highest when making the charge roll.

Slaanesh: 4CP: Use at the beginning of a turn. Until the start of the next turn, when units roll for morale, they roll 2d6 and take the highest.

Tzeentch: 3 CP. Choose one of your psychic units, it can cast a power twice instead of once (works with the battleforged rules)

Nurgle: 5CP: use at the start of your turn. Until the start of your next turn, whenever a non-nurgle unit suffers an unsaved wound, it takes an additional mortal wound.

Oops, slaanesh gets command points from dealing an unsaved wound with a d characteristic of 2, or taking the same.Something about extreme sensations.

Khorne units have a lot of special rules dealing with charging and fighting.
Slaanesh gets a lot of morale and leadership rules and powers.
Nurgle gets mortal wounds.
Tzeentch gets to mess around with a little bit of everything.

No. You can target either your own unit or an enemy unit. If that unit can charge, it must charge the nearest enemy unit (enemy to it, not to you).

Basically you can give a small charge reliability buff to your own units during your charge phase, or taunt an enemy unit during their own charge phase.

>Khorne units gain command points whenever they slay a model in close combat, or are slain in close combat.
Are you fucking crazy? 1 Command Point per model killed? Make it per UNIT. Otherwise I get like 50 command points for just making i to combat.
>Slaanesh units gain command points whenever they use a weapon with a damage characteristic of 2 or greater, or are slain by the same thing.
This sounds kinda weird, its like the Khorne version, but weaker because they need the 2Damage weapon but easier because it can be ranged and they dont even need to kill stuff? Also doesnt really have any fluff correlation.
>Tzeentch units gain command points whenever they roll a 9. Tzeentch units have lots of ways to roll 2d6.
Now THIS is a fun and fluffy way to get command points. Psychic Powers? Charge Rolls? Morale Tests? This one is cool.
>Nurgle Daemons gain command points whenever a unit takes an unsaved wound, but resists it with a FNP equivalent. (within 12 inches of them).
It sounds fluffy...but you've gotta realize that means every goddamn Plague Bearer who makes his disgustingly resilient gives a command point, which makes it similiarly effective as khorne or slaanesh. Way to strong.

I like the idea that demons get CP, but you need to make it something thats hard to pull off but rewarding when done right. More importantly, it needs to be limited to a certain amount, like, say 3(thats up to you guys?) per turn.
I could something like "tiers".
Each god has a table with three seperate missions of varying difficulty, that reward 1, 2 or 3 command points based on said difficulty.
Khorne, for example, could be:
>Blood for the Blood God: Gain 1 CP if at least 8 models (yours and opponents) die in the Fight Phase during your turn
>Slaughter and Gore: Gain 2 CP if at least 8 Units (yours and opponents) are currently locked in combat at the end of your turn
>Let their Heads roll: Gain 3 CP if your Warlord slays an enemy Character during your Fight Phase

Slaanesh does get new units and wargear. Also psychic powers which will supplement command point generation. Slaanesh units will also have a subtheme of morale tests. One of the new slaanesh powers for instance is "target unit immediately takes a morale test"

Chapter tactics you might not like, depending on how you like new lore stuffs. Basically they're introducing some political stuff into the Daemons faction, with differing warbands all vying for the favor of their patron gods.

2 Khorne, 1 unalligned, 2 tzeentch, 1 nurgle, and 1 slaanesh daemonhosts with different tactics.

One of my favorites is the new Masque of Slaanesh. It's got some unique debuffs that it can apply now

During your shooting choose one of 3 debuffs to apply to a unit within 6 inches:
1. Target unit's range on its weapons is reduced to 6 inches until the start of your next shooting phase.
2. Target unit always fights last in the fight subphase u, until the start of your next shooting phase.
3. Until the start of your next shooting phase, target unit's leadership is equal to the lowest leadership characteristic around it (friend or foe). 6 inch range for the initial targeting and the leadership aquisition radius.

Ruststalkers are incredibly easy to kill. Admech has no transports too so holy fuck they just die in droves before ever reaching melee. Purifiers have a pitiful attack count for some of the best warriors in the Grey Knights army and their smite is useless without getting into melee in the first place, where they get rekt by any dedicated CC unit. Nephilim Jetfighters are fluffed as air superiority units but have a buff for shooting at targets on the ground for whatever reason.

They look fucking horrible

Just so you know, the book says the Beast never dies. Other Orks become new Beasts. And Ghazghkull is supposed to be the next one.

Make it so that
>Khornate units generate a CP when they destroy a unit in close combat and consolidate into another unit.
BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD!
>Slaaneshi daemons earn a command point if a unit they shoot or fight fail a morale test.
It's a big gory orgy and everyone's going! Even if you didn't want to.
>Nurgle daemons earn a command point every time a unit or model has been shot or fought and does not lose a wound.
Your despair only makes my tentacles harder!
>Tzeentch daemons earn a command point every time a daemon successfully rolls 9 or above on a psychic test or deny roll.
Just according to keikaku. [TL note: Keikaku means Tzeentch.]

Maybe his can only happen a maximum number of times per turn.

those are either much more powerful and/or even more utter trash

Slaanesh daemons are going to get cucked so hard against Deathwing, Nids, Guard and Orks with this

He is (well at least used to be) actually the equivalent of the BroCap.
He's just also the Champ because only the people who are /that/ good with a blade as well as mentally stronk are entrusted with guarding Antwyr. He's the only one (known) that's actually been balls out insane enough to wield it, but the point stands.

Castellan is pretty much BroCap/CHAPTERChamp rolled into one. Although I suppose the boss of the Paladins may be better suited to the the Chapter Champ honor.

The Purifiers are in fact a Brotherhood. Just a small one due to the requirements for entry. They had an entry that said whenever they did find enough candidates to justify expanding their ranks, everyone knows shit is about to go down hard.

But they're fluffy and situational. The Khorne one works great against swarm armies, but shit against elite armies. The Slaanesh one works great against against armies with crappy positioning and poor morale (can you say conscripts). Nurgle one works great vs armies that rely on low strength high volumes of fire rather than highly powerful weapons. Even then you might be unlucky and not dent a GUO with your lascannons. Tzeentch one is great vs psychic armies but not too good against most other shit. It also encourages the opponent to think about when he should deny and when he shouldn't.

>Guard
Not really. Guard fail morale tests all the time. They just don't give a shit because lmao commissars.

Theorycrafter pls go

Fair enough. Also
>Codex says Purifiers usually go no higher than 40 in number
>current number is 44
Shiiiiieeeeeeet
Unrelated, but Govannon Bors (High Paladin) should be a character too. A bit sad that he got cucked out of a slot and will never be fieldable on the table.

reading is hard, isn't it?

But you are right he is a fucking retard

>Bors

I've thought about trying to come up with some rules for him, but I feel like anything I make for him will just be in direct competition to a GM stat block and hard to fit a points niche.
I don't really know what special rules would be cool, maybe give him a variation of the old Holocaust power for his Smite? I dunno

I think they've been at about 44 for awhile. At least since Crowe took over.
He mentions a quarter of them deploy (10+the soon-to-be-previous Castellan) on a mission in Warden of the Blade.

Speaking of GKs. I really would like to see some more exploration of Titan.
Aren't there some really weird things hanging around the wastes outside the Citadel?

Make him a 2-part character.
A Heavily armoured transport with a lot of firepower and a CC (?) based Autoch+.

He could be 'underpowered' for a CC LoW but makes up for it with the Dais.

Another idea I've always wanted for Deldar is a rule that changes how the Court works. So you could have units of Sslyth and Ur'Ghul. Perhaps Llamaheons and Medusa could be taken as one ofs in groups of Kabs/Wyches, as they probably wont work as units. Could work for Vect.
