***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions, as there is a chance it has already been answered there.

For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here!
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

**RANGED GROUPBUILD**

Build/paint a kit (Gundam/Frame Arms/etc) with a loadout focused on long ranged combat! Sniper Rifles, Artillery Cannons, Missile Launchers, Funnels/Bits, and Miniguns are all fair game. You may also include a back-up melee weapons (Like a combat knife or beam saber) with your build, but it shouldn't overshadow your ranged equipment

More clarification here:
>Any scale and any brand is fair game here, you're not limited to just using Gundam models. The base kit needs to be a robot though (Sorry tankfags)
>You can however kitbash a tank with a Zaku/GM or something and submit that.
>The longer the barrel the better. Your average rifle/machine gun on a stock MS isn't gonna cut it.

They're good but the gundamplanet ones are more than fine at half the price. I think they beat out the godhands on value.

I bought my Rebake before the second season even aired. It just feels kinda boring for some reason, I feel like the gunpla really is wasted potential for a mobile suit that I loved while watching the anime.
That said I'm going to salvage the Rebake's shield for a custom that probably won't turn out anywhere as cool as I'm hoping, so it's not like I regret buying the Sticker Rebake.
>>
>>15857938
Welcome to the most expensive part of the hobby, investment-wise. It's not so bad in terms of on-going costs (the occasional purchase of paint, thinner, cleaner) but you have to pay a lot into it up front to even get started.
>>
>>15857953
Yeah, I figure it's just frontloaded.

Do I seem to be missing anything important? Also is Vellejo or Tamiya better/worse for air brushing? I don't see myself doing much by hand.
>>
>>15857798
if you mean getting it just by sanding, then you would be spending 60+ years trying to do it
>>
>>15857872

I mean it's all right but personally I'm very happy I switched from vallejo primer to a lacquer based primer. Being able to sand it really soon is a godsend for an impatient man like me.
>>
>>15857966
If I have never air brushed, should I start with acrylics or lacquer?
>>
>>15857938
I want to paint my kits to stop being a snap shitter, but this is honestly intimidating.
>>
>>15857978
Hand painting is always an option, it's just significantly harder.
Ask yourself; Do I want an easier but expensive painting experience, or do I want a hard but cheap experience?
Also you'll want to learn some degree of hand-painting for fine details anyways if that influences your decision.
>>
>>15857986
Hand painting isn't necessarily harder when you get it down, just far more time consuming.
>>
>>15857993

This. I found painting a highgrade quite exhausting back when I handbrushed.
>>
>>15857986
is there a retard air brush recommendation set? seems to be outdated in the guide
>>
>>15857938
this, and I imagine all other crafting hobbies, is a huge fucking money sink. just buying a few tools isn't enough. you gotta buy a shit ton of specialized tools, and then buy tools for your tools. oh and that's just your non-painting shit. you wanna paint, you gotta buy ton of other shit. you gotta buy paints, but NOPE you can't just use your paints like that. you gotta buy more chemicals (thinners, retarders, etc) for your paints and specialized tools and tool accessories for your paints. and don't even mention airbrushing, because that's even more shit. oh wait, you're just using water for you water slide decals?! haha what a fucking pleb! my friend you need MORE TOOLS AND CHEMICALS to properly apply water slide decals.
>>
>>15858003
At least when it comes to gunpla and you're a complete shitter like me you only really need two tools. Something for sanding and something to cut out the pieces.
>>
>>15858003
gunpla is one of the cheapest hobbies tbqh
>>
>>15857938
You don't need the badger paint mixer and personally I'd avoid the liquitex and get name brand thinner, on the exception of it being Tamiya because it's straight up rebottled 91% isopropyl alcohol which you can buy a lot more of in larger quantities for less.
It's not comparatively that much, but that's 35 dollars that can go to paints and masking.
>>
>>15858011
>>15857938

He probably doesn't need the cleaning kit either, q-tips and interdental brushes go a long way.
>>
>>15858011
I was getting the liquitex one because the guide recommended it because it had retardant and other stuff inside it. What is another strong choice then? Vellejo paint thinner, will it replace it or do I need another add in?

>>15858014
Thanks man
>>
>>15858003
How old are you, anon? You have to keep in mind that this hobby (scale modeling, gunpla is way less expensive than doing something like military/planes/trains) is meant for 40+ year old men who have/had a good career and probably make/made at least 50-60k a year, at which point the cost of supplies for the hobby really isn't that bad.
I'm like 21 years old, I dipped my toes into the hobby when I was about 14-15 but I didn't get to do much because I was into tanks and scale tanks are like $50-70 a kit which is a lot of money to a kid. Hell, $50 is still a considerable sum of money to me for a single kit. But the target audience, the older and possibly even retired men? A $50 1/48 tank they can spend a good month building, painting, weathering and applying battle damage to is a bargain. The $300~ they paid for their airbrushing setup is pocket change.

I've been reading gundam the origin and looking st getting some kits like gm's, guncannons, guntanks and granddaddy kits. Any recommendations?

>When your cheapest lens is like $500

It is, I'd really like to get into airbrushing. The problem I have is room and a safe place to do it. Hand painting is fine, but far from ideal. Hopefully I can get some more room soon so I can safely use stuff other then acrylics.

paints and airbrush & airbrush accessories isn't enough. now you need a spray booth and exhaust fan
>>
>>15858094

More time spent per kit, obviously. I'd go through my backlog at least twice as fast if I were to just snap, panel line and top coat them.
>>
>>15858106
Or you could use a garage.
>>
>>15858106
>spray booth
Just use a cardboard box and go outside
>>
>>15858106
Something we're all aware of, then you need to vent outside the house/apartment safely. There's a lot that goes into making a usable airbrushing setup.

>>15858114
Sometimes that's not always an option. Either through lack of one or not enough room (With cars and what not.) You could also do it outside, but where I live that isn't a good idea since I live in the southwest where it's always dusty unless it rained the day before. Painting outside has always been a major crapshoot for me due to dust and sand.

Probably, considering $8 is what you should expect to pay for a Graze Kai (what you're building) before even factoring in shipping costs.
$60 for a MG Sinanju isn't bad either, HLJ is $61 before shipping and even Banzai is $52+shipping.

The visor doesn't open on the Graze (Kai)? I know on the Graze Ritter (pic related) you can move the commander's fin to open the visor up. I'll post another pic after my post timer ends to show you what that looks like.

I'm making a presentation about the manufacturing process of making gunpla kits. What are the most famous kits and most aesthetic ones to display in my slides? And what kind of plastic do they use for these models.
>>
>>15858517
If you think the Kai has a lot of spare parts, buy a Ritter. A lot of the non-stock Grazes have the entire Graze runners despite replacing parts - the Graze Ritter has two extra heads, a regular Graze head and a Commander Graze head. It also has the regular Graze shoulder armor, etc.
Most kits don't use the entire polycap sheet, though. It's cheapest and easiest just to mold a single standardized sheet with all of the polycaps needed for every kit in the line, and then just throw that in each box even if none of the kits use the entire thing.
>>
>>15858533
ABS, PS, PE, etc. Here's a video showing the actual manufacturing process of the kits that you'll probably find incredibly helpful.

Move to California, we have lots of opportunities in the forging industry. Making nits and bolts is $20 an hour starting and there's no experience necessary other than being able to do trigonometry and enjoy working with heavy machinery.

Or you could just find a job like that in your state if you have any.
>>
>>15858684
>California
No thanks.
Also if you think the average American can do trig I'm willing to bet you're sorely mistaken.
>>
>>15858684
>$60k a year at $20 an hour

Exactly how many hours of overtime are you working? This is excluding the cost of living from state to state that comes into play. $60k a year here is basically owning your own house, brand new car, and having quite a lot left over each year.
>>
>>15858689

Sanding the paint to be smooth. Getting a gloss even on a large surface is much harder than a small surface, so car paint often takes a lot of polishing with very high grit sandpaper or micromesh or polishing compounds (or all 3). You can do it without it but it doesn't look as good. There won't really be any scribing on this, and the panels are already lined. I still have to do wipers, glass, mirrors, door handle, locks, rear lights and plate. You can't sand very well with those attached so they go last.
>>
>>15858776
Why not just use Mr Super Clear on top of the paint though?
>>
>>15858813

That's what I use, but it's still a very large object with several surfaces where the air from the brush disrupts the surface on other parts of the body.

I want to get a topcoat I can air brush, and I want it to be dull/matte. The guide's options are not on any stores/amazon's websites I found.

What is a good airbrushable top coat for dull/matte? Also do you need additive for it, or can you just go straight from container to airbrush?

How high grit are we talking and would this be good for removing scuff marks when sanding nubs on gunpla?
>>
>>15859304
Elaborate on this please.

Also panel liner is more of a convenience. That jar will easily last you a 100 gunpla, it costs not even $10, and you never have to wash the brush.

>Primer is just paint and tamiya goes on so well you rarely need to prime, also you can prime a surface with sandpaper.

You sand with sandpaper to create a surface for paint to stick on.

You prime to kill the color of the plastic you're painting over so you get a blank canvas to work on. You cannot paint white over red, for instance.
>>
>>15857778
I started with lacquers and I'm glad I didnt bother with weak ass acrylic. The latter is safer for you, but thats about the only advantage. People say its easier to correct mistakes with acrylic, but I think its also easier to make mistakes.
>>
>>15858629
Doing what, working 60 hours a week?
>>
>>15859387

Paint is really delicate so very high grit, typically 3600 to 12000. If I were cleaning nubs on plastic for no paint I'd use micromesh pads or squadron's tri-grit stick. Pads are a better investment though.
>>
>>15859535

Chipping fluid works a lot better with acrylics, but it's a niche advantage
>>
When I started out I didnt go bonkers on kits because I knew I'd be unsatisfied with unpainted builds. I got 3 HG kits to start, then I saved for buying paints and eventually an airbrush. Painted all 3 kits before I bought another. Feel like a lot of people fall into the backlog trap where they straight build a ton of kits because painting is "too expensive" and its boring so they quit.

Mr Color makes some that I hear is good. Tamiya also makes some flat clear (a clear coat is a top coat or can be used as a middle coat if you need to make your model glossy for panel washing).
Other than those there's Alclad. Vallejo too. Not sure how great others are, but those brands should work well if you find them. If you have a local store check there first to have low pricing and continued stock.
>>

Model masters flat lacquer in a jar, thin it with Mr. Color Leveling Thinner if you have it, or just lacquer thinner. It's easy to get locally and easily on par with other flat airbrush lacquer clears. Shops don't always have it but it's easy to order it. I've used both it and mr. color flat and the difference is pretty negligible.

Frankly speaking that is a piece of shit paintjob. Paint's too thick, not evenly applied, and it looks like you just poured it on until it looked right/you gave up.

However, It's also obvious you're trying to make all the pieces look the color they should be. Shows you've got the will to make it look good. My suggestion is that you look up painting tutorials and invest in rattlecans until you can afford an airbrush. Don't be afraid if one coat doesn't do the job; be patient and don't try to do too much at one time. Also let the layers cure between coats.

Good luck and hope your next efforts are better!

I've had that happen to parts when I'm nipping them off the runner. If there's 3/4 connections the piece can sometimes swing around when you cut the penultimate one, and rip a bit of plastic off the piece when it swings. Normally it's only a small bit, though, nothing you can't sand down to make it invisible. That just looks like shit luck.

20 is high, that's pay for a more skilled machine operator or something. I make 12 doing basic assembly of small components by hand. Part time job but eh, it keeps gas in the tank and it's ok the way to school. American manufacturing is making a comeback thanks to automation though, robots pay for themselves very quickly and massively speed up production. Workers cost more, but working with people who speak the language of the company, have quality standards, use robots and machines, and get decent pay means many more parts are produced per day.

No, buy First Grades
>>
>>15861406
If you're asking this question in terms of "I only want one size of model so that I can display everything together" then yes, 1/144 is the best scale. By adding RGs into the mix (which are in 1/144 and will look normally sized if better quality next to your HGs) you mitigate one of the biggest reasons to go 1/100- MGs have more detail and generally look nicer than HGs.
I'd say MGs are still worth getting, I've got MGs and they just feel so much better than my HGs even if they aren't in the proper scale to be displayed next to eachother. I'll have to see how my first RG holds up in comparison to a MG, though.

Rebakes rifles are a bit different than the Graze's, longer squarer barrel. That version comes in Orig Rebake kit, and in the option set 9

Most Graze variations (Kai, ryuseigo, etc) come with the original pic though
>>
>>15861586

The Rebake (in lore) uses a modified version of the Graze's 120mm rifle designed for long range combat.

Is this it? Are tamiya's panel linings enamel? Would I even need it otherwise? Sorry I'm new to this.
>>
>>15861600
>>15861558
You do not need gloss coat unless you want gloss finish. It's useless otherwise.
>>
>>15861572
I'm working on it with test kits. It's flat Tamiya, I'm going to try and spray future and then do panel lining, the exias inner frame in places has a wash that worked out well as a test, but it's covered up. I still ended up getting some pooling though.

I really would love to figure out a wash combination so i'm not in every panel with a liner. Light Future+Pastels+Light future might be an option.

I'm getting really sick of petitguys in general. What the fuck is wrong with the Japanese that they are buying them in large enough quantities that Bandai keeps shitting out new variations of them? Granted that they're literally all the exact same mold with different colored PS, but the machines occupied by this garbage could be reprinting an actually good kit and someone has to be buying them to justify it.

>>

>it's like saying the sale of the RG High Mobility Zaku will lead to a RG Sazabi

Because in order to achieve this the volume of plastic needed along with the girth of the metal mold is fuckhuge compared to Just being separate parts. The market doesnt like high prices for gunpla. Because of how cheap gunpla is and the fact bandai doesnt readjust the price everytime they reissue a kit, they have to maintain a certain range with their releases to allow room for te occassional beyond normal high end character within their lines..

When is a new series/anime slated to come out so we can have new kits?

I like some of the IBO kits, but overall they're kind of lackluster.

I'd rather Sunrise wait a while before pumping out a new series. They've got Origin, Thunderbolt, Battleogue, and Twilight Axis on their plates right now, then there's stuff like Geass coming up. A new Gundam series would probably be shafted to Studio 3 or worse, and I don't want to think about who they'd get to helm/write it.

Stick to gloss paints and then change the finish after you're all done by using a matte topcoat. Doing panel lines over flat paint doesn't go very well. Basically you can always make gloss into matte, but not the reverse.

Because the people that buy those models have a low tier appreciate of modeling in general. They're more interested in the show more than they are the model.
