If I go Mystic, Order of the Immortal, and then just all the straight up fighty vanilla stuff like Brute Force and Psychic Hammer/Mind Slam, how does it compare to Fighter or Monk?
>>
What's wrong with splat if it offers more options as opposed to just optimal builds, which it seems to in 5e due to the subclass system?
>>
>>55291447
Currently doing moderately ok since his wife is a diplomat, character I have as back up if this one gets to a point he doesn't need to adventure anymore is 10th in line, and plans to keep it that way, for the throne of a small northern Viking style kingdom. They're well off due to logging and mining, he's adventuring as part of his job as a diplomat since he's the least rowdy of his brothers and sisters.

DM is starting a new game allowing only VGM races. Game will start at 5th level, the higher we've ever went. What should I play, guys? I was thinking of rolling a meme character as I think it will be an one-shot (no confirmation yet), but in the same time it's the first time I will get to play a "high" level character.

No UA allowed though.
>>
>>55291490
Because most people don't want a repeat of pf, the more splat material that is pumped out the more likely this is as the publishers run out of ideas and start churning out shit.
>>
>>55291490
>>55291516
Also should add that just because it adds more options doesn't automatically make it a good thing for the game overall.
>>
>>55291516
>>55291534

So what are people's feelings on Xanathar's Guide to Everything then?
>>
>>55291547
It's the first true splat in three years, people are excited.

That does not mean there should be anymore splat any time soon
>>
>>55291547
I'm extremely excited, because of how the new subclasses went through public playtesting via Unearthed Arcana, so they're far more likely to not be balance outliers
>>
>>55291447

Would a metamagic option for sorcerer's that removes concentration requirements on a spell be OP? I imagine the point cost for it would be the same as Twinned. (spell level)
>>
>>55291547
Like others have said it'll be nice after a decent amount of time. The issue is if they just start churning this stuff out like some people seem to want. Also I'll wait till I actually have one, or see all the subclasses and such that made it in.
>>
>>55291621
Yes, that's fucking ridiculous
Don't fuck with concentration rules
>>
>>55291621
Why not play pf if that's what you're after?

>>
>>55291447
Considering my character is a college student I'd say they're not just poor they have negative wealth.
>>
>>55291621
if it simply said to disregard concentration rules, yes. having two conc. spells running simultaneously is dangerously good. If they both had to be buff spells, it might be more reasonable, but idk how one would efficiently word that
>>
>>55291621
What you COULD have is a metamagic that makes concentration checks automatic for the spell.
>>
>>55291621
they should just remove concentration and only allow a character to have one buff on them at a time.
>>
>>55291704
There are buffs that do not require concentration. Concentration is a higher order of buffs.

Who are you playing?

I'm going to find out next week, stay tuned.

Seems like the biggest difference to me is that you don't get multiple attacks with the attack action. You do get those psychic d8s with your one attack, but that's about it. I'm hoping that the various utility aspects make up for the damage loss but we'll see; I'm mostly looking forward to using Knock Back, since Brute Strike requires betting the psi ahead of time rather than reacting to a hit. But of course you also have Bestial Form so you can spend 5 psi and a bonus action to fly, attune psionic weapon to get past DR, etc etc, which is all nice, and you can still spend just a single discipline choice to get proficiency with any skill for the cost of a bonus action.

Other big thing I see is that as an Immortal you don't get anything that lets you use your dex for weapons, which makes your Barb-esque bare AC thing less useful. You can get around it by going High Elf; you get +1 int and proficiency with the Shortsword. It's not a rapier but it is finesse, so then you can pile on the Dex/Con as needed without blowing a feat on Weapon Master. And there's the cantrip, ultimately I think High Elf's probably the best PHB race for an Immortal. You can also just use feats to get up to medium/heavy armor and focus on strength instead.

That's how it reads to me, like a concentration weapon damage cantrip but without the long window to make the hit. Don't know if there's a Sage Advice that says otherwise.

>>55291995

Oh yeah, you could just do that as a Nomad though and get more access to Nomad stuff, more teleportation to stay out of melee, etc. You got Studded Leather anyway, so you can get 17 AC with maxed Dex. >>
>>55292571

Roleplaying is actually super fun. I'm not sure if I like roleplaying more or combat more, but it's a close one.
>>
>>55292550
Not necessarily. If you're a capable roleplayer, there's no obligation to follow a mechanical process for generating a character personality.
On the other hand, the ideal, bond, etc. tables can spur the imagination to come up with interesting characters whether or not you roll on them/pick from them, and just having a background separate from class makes characters more interesting.

>>55292614
>Implying Anon doesn't
>>
What do you think of this character concept?
>Goliath Totem Barbarian (Bear at 3 and 6, Eagle at 14)
>Take Brawny at 4 and Tavern Brawler at 8
>Fight using a stupidly huge sword (Huge sized Dagger or Shortsword) as an Improvised Weapon, using it more as a lever in the battlefield than an actual sword since even as a Goliath it's too big to be practical

>Goliath wanderer with a sword that makes even him look small he's got literally chained to his body so he can't lose it, if asked about it says he took it off a Giant he killed and doesn't go into it any further, most people assume he killed a giant in combat because he's a bad motherfucker

>In truth the Goliath was taken in by an extremely old (even by Storm Giant standards) Storm Giant after being separated from his tribe in an avalanche, the Giant offering to let him stay there after he proved himself a good servant and person to converse with, becoming something of an adoptive son
>Eventually the Giant tells him he's not long for this world, asks him to fulfill the last bit of some Storm Giant Omen he won't be able to because he's about to croak- deliver this sword to it's "rightful owner", and that he'll know when he finds them
>Giant gets ded, Golaith is sad and blames himself for basically not being able to do a single thing to help him, takes sword/dagger (Which he can barely lift) and sets off to find who the Giant was talking about
>Somewhere between 1-100 years later, Goliath is wandering around with this giant fucking sword, at this point he's able to wield it in some fashion (Though he tends to rely on punches and kicks using it as a counterweight more than swinging the weapon itself)

Who the sword is meant for is up to the DM, could say it's for someone plot relevant, another PC, or some bullshit "it wuz ment 4 u all along :DD" sappy thing, or go the entire campaign without ever finding them.
>>
>>55292692
Personally I prefer an even mix, too much of one or the other for whatever reason just start to make it drag.
>>
>>55292721

The only problem is that your regular Goliath doesn't live that long. Talk to your DM to see if it's different in his settings.
>>

>>55292677
You seem upset, maybe you should look to your own idiotic outburst before saying everyone else is illiterate and just assumes.

Why can't you have both in your character creation process? Why can't you pick a background first and have this inspiration to create a character? Why is this deliberately gimping yourself? What sheer stupidity is this?

You are basically min/maxing when you say you're deliberately gimping yourself by choosing a background first.

>You are basically min/maxing when you say you're deliberately gimping yourself by choosing a background first.
I'm not that Anon and even I can tell that they meant "gimping" yourself as far as character creation and RP potential.
People here are just looking for reasons to accuse each other of minmaxing.
>>
>>55292831
Did you read the original post or do you have reading comprehension issues?
>you are playing a character according to your chosen background after all.
Is gimping yourself because it is making the statement of you are playing a character according to your chosen background. This is not being inspired by, expanding on ideas from or any of what you're sperging about. If you are directly playing a character only using the tables it is gimping yourself because if you have any creativity you could do better and do as you said use it as inspiration.

I think you need to take a deep breath and realize I never said you couldn't do any of that, but if you are playing a character directly from the backgrounds you have gimped yourself because you can do better.
>>
>>55292892

Pump dex and be a fencer+buckler sort of dude. Womanizing prettyboy. It's not super unique but it'll be fun to play.
>>
>>55292964
Are you deliberately being obtuse? Do you suffer from deliberate reading incomprehension?

What does that mean if not inspired by? Your chosen background can be anything you realize, it doesn't need to conform to your deliberately restrictive and idiotic reading. Your chosen background can be something you made yourself. In fact the PHB also encourages this. You can model and be inspired by the tables but nowhere does this mean you must take them. No one but you has been saying this.

Who fucking said you need to deliberately need to stick to the tables?
I think you need to take a deep breath and stop idiotically assuming, minmaxing and actually start to play a character.
>>
>>55292390
There is no need to make it its own class; instead, just make it a Fighter subclass.

I don't think I've ever played a character according to their background. That was what they were. I'm playing what they are. Growth and transition and all that good stuff. Who would play a character that's a cloistered scholar? Just sittin' in a library the whole campaign? Come on now.

Yeah. And that's how I do it. But who you were isn't who you are, that'd be boring as fuck. Like, pirate background. People who play the pirate background expecting the campaign to be dragged out to see to impress other sea vessels are boring people. That's lame and no one should ever do that.

I'm pretty sure people who play the pirate background want to be an ex-pirate who's now going on adventures, not imagining every game is going to turn into a pirate game.
I mean, those might exist, but I don't believe they're the majority.

You look and feel like you're a fighter-type, running into melee to beat people with your sword, but what's really happening is you're a one attack martial doing piss-poor damage past the 5th level mark unless you dump PP onto every attack, some of it wasteable. The good news is that if you've been counting HP, you can tailor each strike to just murder an enemy, rather than leaving them low over doing overkill damage. The bad news is that outside of dual-wielding (which isn't great, given how many powers you have that manifest on a bonus action) you're only ever getting one attack per round unless you blow a whopping 5 PP and that bonus action on Surge of Action (Celerity) every fucking round.

In truth, you are some kind of Sorcerer who has only memorized single-target damage spells. Your effectiveness at killing shit holds up only so long as your DM's encounter style allows you to save or restore PP. Up until the point that you run out of resources, you're something like a Rogue or low level Paladin; you've only got one shot at something, but you can make it count. It's tempting to think of a Mystic as some kind of gish, but a gish-styled Mystic is really a caster whose spells look like martial stuff. You do, however, get the Cleric's weird +1d8 damage to hits at level 8, an attempt to make up for their lack of improved Attacks.
>>
>>55293476
Maybe you should do as you preach. The original comment was phrased correctly, it's only your weirdly restrictive interpretation that prevents you from seeing reason and continuing to see a red haze and continuing to sperg out.
You realize the backgrounds are how you make them don't you? You realize according to your background means however you create your background don't you? You realize you can customize backgrounds don't you? That you can work with your DM to create features for your background? You do realize these things don't you?
Why are you continuing to be deliberately obtuse?

Unless you're being a memeing shithead who abuses Animate Weapon + Lethal Strike + Knockback to dump all your PP into one target and absolutely blow it up, the true power of the Immortal lies in being an unkillable shitbird.

Bestial Form's +2 AC can always be on in a fight and isn't even Concentration-based (quite an oversight).
Iron Durability's focus is another +1 AC that's always on, no Concentration. It's also got a scaling Shield analogue (1-7 extra AC as a reaction), and a bonus action physical resistance.
Adaptive Body's got quasi-Absorb Elements; costs more and no bonus damage. You can also give resistance or immunity to a given element. Also, no need to eat, sleep, or breathe!
Celerity gives you bonus action Dodge or Disengage for 2 PP.
Corrosive Metablism grants retaliation damage any time you're hit: 2d6 Acid, no save, AoE.
Diminuation has a costly "nope, that attack didn't work" reaction for 5 PP; it's like Counterspell for melee.
Psionic Restoration gives you up to 7d8 worth of healing as an action.
Moving over to Awakened disciplines, Intellect Fortress has a 2 PP reaction to impose disadvantage on an incoming hit, with 2d10 retaliation even if it hits. You can also add 1-7 to your Wis/Int/Cha saves as a reaction, and Concentrate to give the party advantage on them as well.

Outside of powers, you have what is essentially d10 HP (d8+1; 6 for the average level, just like d10) and can stack Dex and Con like a Barbarian. No shield usage with this, though, and you're limited to Simple weapons. You remembered to roll as a Hill Dwarf, right?
You get INT Temp HP every round (non-stacking).
Whenever you manifest a power, you can regain HP equal to the PP cost as a bonus action (so, not so useful if you're using a lot of bonus actions to manifest).

Rather than manifesting attack powers and blowing people up with psychic damage or big melee hits, you can be an intractable asshole that ignores everything thrown at him.

While I still haven't seen it, I disagree with Arcane Archer after its been revised. Magic Arrows at level 3 are great for overcoming resistances before you get magic items and also add more damage and accuracy without spending anything, and redirecting arrows at 7 is also pretty good. It pales in comparison to battlemaster, but every other subclass does also

However in an old PHB only campaign I had a sick Hill Dwarf Nature Cleric that I made because I knew the game wouldn't get to level 5. Shillelagh for d8 1h wisdom attack, Hill Dwarf for +Wis and not needing Str for armor, and despite being a full caster I had just as good melee as a martial (without feats), max AC, and high HP. The moment you reach 5 it kind of stops being special though.

This was made in response to someone claiming they don't add anything to the game and if the other person was desperate for content. In the given context that is really easy to see how someone could be implying such, especially given the wording. Also again there you go talking about customizing in a discussion where the term used was chosen. Of course you can do all that, I've agreed with that before that isn't what was stated though so I'll ask again, do you actually know what the word choose or chosen mean?

>DMG after MM and PHB or even optional

This is why people say DnD is bad, rigid, has no options etc. There is so much stuff you can do with the information and tips in the DMG it's unreal. It has rules and advice for chases, interplanar travel, devising currencies, loot, monsters, spells, and more, post-level 20 progression that is arguably as good/better and certainly more inspired than 3.5E's epic levels, sieges, madness... It's crazy, there is SO MUCH to do and try, and you would rank it optional. People wrongly accuse DnD of being a bad or shallow system or desire more splatbooks of nothing but new class options, monsters, races, spells, and items, but they have never in their life checked the options in the DMG, and nor have their DMs. Don't mislead people.
>>
>>55294317
Do you understand the meaning of choose or chosen? You understand it's selecting the most appropriate right? As in it does fit under customizing a background and working with the DM to come up with new features? Because you're choosing your own chosen background.

If it was phrased as "a chosen background", then yes that would fall under your weirdly restrictive definition, but hopefully your non-meme autism would be able to differentiate.

He will focus mostly on Wu Jen disciplines. He gets his tankiness through Inertail Armor, Defensive Step, Mastery of Wood and Earth and Cloak of Air (which he will use his concentration on most of the time) ontop of his Memory of a thousand Steps. If this won't be enough I could always go for more options like Bestial Form or Adaptive Body, but I will try without them first.

Then I will use Nomadic Step to stay mobile, get into good positions and swap places with allies who are not. After that I will use things like Mastery of Water or Mastery of Weather to disable enemies and push/pull them away from my party (for example teleport behind the enemy lines and use Watery Grasp).

My biggest concern right now is what disciplines to get when, or when to swap them.

Ok so as this anon mentioned: design rules. How go design spells, dungeons, monsters, items, even towns and people's personalities, the world, dieties... most of this is in the first few pages! You've got a chapter for making villains and their motivations, but not only that! It has tables and advice for motivations of monsters and NPCs. You've got factions, something I think is criminally underused by DMs, but makes the world feel MUCH more organic, like it's actually existed for a while and had people of similar convictions etc. join together. It has advice for designing classes, subclasses, backgrounds... a whole chapter! The chapter about designing a chase is one of.my favourite parts, read that and make your next session a chase scene through the city, or a forest, or an ancient ruin. Check out the madness chapter for your next eldritch horror game, or just a regular old skellingtons 'n' werewolves oneshot. The entire DM's Workshop chapter is amazing. Design a disease, a poison, a condition... You've got a guide to design your own adventure (I'm gonna give you one in pdf that I think follows that guide nicely, though any official one will do; just to show you that you can do it as well!) And my favourite chapter right now: planar travel. The first time I read it, I skipped it completely, but now it's my favourite. Just ONE other plane opens up almost as many new options as running a game in the material plane.

And lastly but not leastly it teaches a lot about being a DM, pure mechanical details. How to discuss and set the tone with your players how to follow rules, and which ones to follow. How to evoke feelings in players and make NPCs believable. The whole Running the Game chapter, if commited to memory, or if you just take notes from it, can make a first time DM with a bit of RP talent a competent DM.

It's not bad, but it has some weirdness (construct companion as a core feature) and a couple features that are extremely conditional (like the bonus attunement slots).

There's a spinoff from it that I see get posted sometimes that is based on a sort of deconstructed Warlock, which has more variety and seems both more interesting and more true to the fiction of Eberron. I'm sure somebody here knows what I'm talking about and has/could find the PDF.

My setting has Egyptian-inspired desert fae who live in an oasis in the middle of a desert. Human nomads in the desert avoid the oasis because if the fae city ever slips over to our world they tend to get all enslavey.

Alright guys, I just looked through all of the adventures that take place in the Sword Coast, and noted the ethnicity of each pictured character. If a character was pictured from the back and it could be argued that they could be one race or more, they were not listed. Let's see the ethnic breakdown of the Sword Coast:

Hoard of the Dragon Queen:
77% White
14% Black
5% Asian
5% Middle Eastern

Rise of Tiamat:
67% White
7% Black
13% Asian
13% Middle Eastern

Princes of the Apocalypse:
57% White
26% Black
15% Asian
2% Middle Eastern

Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide:
62% White
21% Black
8% Asian
10% Middle Eastern

Storm King's Thunder:
81% White
14% Black
5% Asian
0% Middle Eastern

Overall, you can see that the books were getting steadily more diverse, but then Storm King's Thunder tried to get rid of all of that! I guess something I don't understand is why there's so many Middle Eastern characters hanging out in The North.

What do you guys think? Is Storm King's Thunder an accurate depiction of the demographics of the Sword Coast, or is Princes of the Apocalypse more your style?

>>
>>55296152
When you win, you get your bet back, plus the fraction of it shown in the odds. Or the inverse of it. Or something like that.
Anyway, if you bet on the surefire racers, you shouldn't expect a large payoff. It all makes sense.
>>
>>55296152
You don't bet on the favorite in a horse race and expect to make a ton of money. If you bet 70 dollars on Big Honker in that example, you're only going to be getting 80 dollars back. You get the amount you paid for a ticket IN ADDITION TO the payout. This of course assumes that Chris Perkins understands how betting works, and that he isn't completely retarded.

Because they just got yanked into the darkness and no one on their "side" noticed, because they're all standing guard and staring at nothing. The combat only lasted one round because you straight up murdered the guy, so as long as each attack you make incapacitates its target and doesn't alert any hostile creature, each new round you make is basically the start of a new combat.

>>55296317
Certain types of whips make a sonic boom IF you whip them in the fashion that makes said boom. You can't just pick up any ol' whip and swing it all over and start crackin' like crazy. It's a learned fucking skill.
>>
>>55296515
What does that have to do with anything? If you're dealing enough damage to instantly kill a person with a whip you're going to be pretty fucking decent at using it.
>>
>>55296551
He's saying that you have to want to make the whip crack for it to do so, it's not an automatic thing whenever you use it. Whips work a lot differently than in fucking movies. If you're attacking with a whip and don't want to crack it, then you won't crack it.
>>
>>55296494
Now you're getting it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pryKDCxk8ME
>>
>>55296577
Sure, you can use a whip in plenty of ways. But if you want to attack with one in DnD you're going to be dealing slashing damage, which would require you to, y'know, whip your target. And don't pretend that whipping someone wearing full plate armor as hard as you can is going to be silent.

>but what if I specify I'm strangling them with it

You have a very liberal DM. Also you could use a rope.
