What's the stupidest question you've ever seen a player ask you/your DM during a game?
>>
Hey /tg/! Mike Mearls here, just here to inform you that this month's UA is an alternate Lifestyle Expenses table.
>>
>>55210615
2/10, too much overlap with the Downtime UA. Try again.
>>
>>55210615

No no senpai, you've got to think even MORE useless, that could still be used for westmarches campaigns.

It also isn't nearly as condescending as the last two.

How about a guide on how reflavor spells?
>>

I'd prefer an alternate-lifestyle expenses table.
How am I supposed to know the price per day of the homosexual lifestyle if I don't have official rules for it?

Tortle
>>
Anons, I want to make a viable tanuki race for an Oriental Adventures-inspired setting. Can I get any pointers on fixing this up?

Tanuki
Ability Score Modifiers: +2 Constitution, +1 Charisma
Size: Medium
Speed: 30 feet, Fly 15
Vision: Darkvision
Tanuki Trickery: You can cast the Minor Illusion cantrip with this trait. At 3rd level, you can cast Disguise Self as a 1st level spell once per long rest with this trait. In both cases, Charisma is used as the casting ability score.
Tanuki Transformations: You are a shapeshifter who can freely assume the form of an inanimate object and then revert to your normal form. As an action, you can transform into tools or a weapon by using this ability; you can’t move in such a form, but can be used by another character. In weapon form, attacks made with you count as magical for piercing damage resistance. In tool form, characters may use the tools as if they had proficiency in the requisite skill.
Tail Slap: Your Unarmed Strikes have a base damage of d4.
Hengeyokai: Tanuki, use the stats for a Raccoon.

>not wanting to play a teenage tortle rogue

Warforged was given like years ago?
>>
>>55211164
The flying makes it a bit too good in problem solving/utility (among official races, only one can fly and IIRC it's banned from AL). This is especially true when combined with their transformation, which grants a lot of utility.
I know it's an important part of their identity, but since it's not actually Japan, I think you can afford to lose it. If you remove the flying, the race is fine.

>>55211183
Am I dumb
>>
>>55211164
Hengeyokai: You belong to a race of magical beasts that can assume partially or wholly humanoid form, as well as revert to your true bestial shape when it suits you. As an action, you can shift into any one of your three forms.

Hybrid Form is your default form. It functions as normal for a character.

In your Human Form, you gain Advantage on all Charisma (Deception) checks made to pass yourself off as human. It otherwise functions as Hybrid Form.

In your Beast Form, which is determined by your race, your game statistics are replaced by the statistics of the beast, but retaining your alignment, personality, Intelligence, Wisdom and Charisma scores. You also retain all of your skill and saving throw proficiencies, in addition to gaining those of the beast; if you and the beast have the same proficiency and the beast’s bonus is higher than yours, you use the beast’s bonus.

Changing shapes does not alter your current hit points, maximum hit points, or hit dice.

You can remain in any of these three forms as long as you wish, but must consciously choose to change shapes.

You can change shapes once at 1st level, twice at 5th level, and thrice at 11th level. You regain all expended uses of this trait when you complete a long rest.

If you have exhausted your uses of shapeshifting, you can revert back to hybrid form, but you cannot then change again into beast or human form.
>>
>>55211177
You mean monk, probably?
>>
>>55211195
Both races that can fly are banned from AL (SCAG tiefling varient and aarokocra)

>>
>>55211164
Get rid of the fly speed
I'd change the stat bonuses to +2 Charisma and +1 Dexterity, it fits better
Why is their weapon only affecting piercing resistance?
What if I want to try to determine the difference between their object form and another object?
Is your last point trying to get across the idea that they can transform into raccoons?

I'm making a female Firbolg Nature Cleric who carries a tree trunk on her back (complete with a variety of woodland creatures living within) which she uses as a greatclub (after the critters have evacuated), but I need a reason why this is her weapon.

It was the last tree from the forest she came from, and she is keeping it alive so that she can replant it as the first tree in a new forest.

>>
>>55212407

man trust me you'll want most of your party together by the time the adventure starts. they don't have to be long time friends but if you start with their individual dealings before bringing the party together that'll easily eat up one or two entire sessions
>>
>>55212407
Depends, what are you working with?
I mean, they're players, so naturally they'll want to group together.
>>
>>55212407
they all meet in a tavern.

Or you tell them where they will be starting and ask them to give you a reason they are there. I typically do a staggered introduuction. Fighter is walking around the market, and sees a seedy looking wizard buying fruit. He thinks that's odd, does he investigate? Druid, you over hear the investigation, do you involve yourself?

How many minutes of ambient music should I prepare for a session? I've got about an hour, not counting battle music.

So how lenient are you with Darkvision?

Do you (as intended) limit it to its range only, i.e. in a 500ft cave you can only see 60ft in any direction or do you just handwave it.

Do you describe things in terms of greys and shades only, omitting fine details?

Do you make it unusable if another player has a light source nearby, after all bright lights would blind your eyes.
>>
>>55212517
Creating a phylactery requires an act so heinous that it makes you evil, regardless of the circumstances of your victims. Capital punishment may be justified sometimes in D&D's version of good, but it is never justified to consume souls. Also, being undead naturally steers you toward being evil as your hatred of the living grows out of control. Your special snowflake idea is the one that every lich has before becoming the same evil monster as all the other liches.

enough

>Do you (as intended) limit it to its range only, i.e. in a 500ft cave you can only see 60ft in any direction
not really, I think tracking vision by feet it's a lot of work. I just make sure having/not having darkvision matters

>Do you describe things in terms of greys and shades only, omitting fine details?

Greatclub.jpg

Why does WotC hate the Greatclub?

It's two-handed, so it can't be used as a Monk Weapon, and it's not in the Shillelagh description so it can't benefit from the spell. But a Monk can use Martial Arts with a Quarterstaff held in two-hands, and a G.Club's with Shillelagh wouldn't change the damage dice, except letting it would use Wis for the attack/damage rolls, making it the same as a Shillelagh Club except it can't be wielded in one hand.

It doesn't even have the Heavy property, despite weighing 10lb, so it can't benefit from Great Weapon Master.

Why does WotC hate the Greatclub and love the Quarterstaff, despite them being identical in material, price, and damage when the Q.Staff is two-handed?

In my universe, they're not "one of my ancestors fricked a fiend", because that's boring af. Pacts with the lower planar beings is a lot more common in my universe, and that's how Tieflings usually come to be, usually when the mortal breaks their bargain or loses a bet or words their contract too poorly, or just makes too many pacts, and allows the fiend to corrupt them with infernal magic. This seeps into their family tree and there's a chance of any offspring born after the pact to be a Tiefling, and are usually disposed of in secret or abandoned on doorstops or orphanages.

I have a few concepts.

A good chunk are born to noble famillies and hidden away as a black sheep or in shame. Many become adventurers, because what else are they gonna do? Many of the ones born to the more superstitious commoners are killed shortly after birth, mistaking them for real fiends.

Some have formed a society. In one of my nations there's a collection of fleshy "trees" of fiendish origin that is constantly expanding outward, like a tumor.

It's inhabited almost entirely by these sedentary, tendrilous animals that feed on nutrients in the soil, sunlight, and people dumb enough to stumble into it; a variety of massive insects whose chitinous shells keep them from sticking to the limbs; and tieflings, which it recognizes as a fellow fiendish creature and leaves them alone. They have a society buried away in there composed almost of tieflings living in a rough, savage, but survivable environment.

Pic related, it's an idea from Alfie, a very NSFW webcomic that you should all read.

Nah. I didn't know what to do with the voch'kar, but I wanted a race to live there regardless. Tieflings seemed like a good fit, especially when I stuck the "wood" right in the middle of the religious-zealot-empire (think a country in DEUS VULT mode that never stops).

Hell, I decided the modern country was formed by a group of people devoted to keep the wood from spreading.

So maybe originally, but now it's firmly tiefling territory with a lot more baggage mixed in.

>The tieflings and the voch'khar have a lot in common, visually-speaking
Oh yeah, I know. It makes a little too much sense, and that was my original inspiration, I just didn't want to make it entirely arbitrary, you know?
I'm pulling some inspiration from the new Doom game in the aesthetic of the buildings that have been captured with people that didn't evacuate. Disembodied gore all over the place being slowly dissolved, that kind of thing.
>How does the country keep the wood from spreading? Axe the borders every few weeks?
More violent than that, actually. It's a constant war against a force of nature. They have paladins 'round the clock fighting the damn thing with fire and radiance, clerics keeping them up in battle, and mundane troops keeping the place lit during the night, burning away ruined flesh-tendrils, and building barricades ever-higher while evacuating civilians.

See, the thing doesn't grow evenly. It could sit peacefully in one section for months then grow a quarter mile overnight, avoiding sections that are defended against or being destroyed.

It's the only reason that this made crusading nation hasn't taken over the rest of men yet—it's a humongous resource drain, and at this point it's almost culturally ingrained to fight this thing.

I like the fallen empire angle with Tieflings. In my setting, there was your standard Magical Cataclysm a millennia ago, and at that time the Tieflings were regular human citizens of a particularly wealthy and opulent trading city with roman overtones. When a magically empowered plague ripped through the known world, the noble houses of the city made a bargain with the devils they had worshipped in secret, tainting their bloodline in exchange for the ability to weather the apocalypse. The rest of the province under their control was completely devastated.

In the present day, the city-state of Caedus has a tenuous alliance with the new human kingdom that has risen from the ashes. Tieflings make up the upper nobility, and each house publicly honours a particular devil as their patron. Slavery and blood sport are both common, but the city relies mainly on it's prosperous maritime trade to stay afloat, as the surrounding lands are still desolate and tainted by dark magic. They have a reputation as self-serving and callous to other civilised races, but they're tolerated because they make lucrative trading partners and dependable allies. They also go out of their way to act as agents in the neverending Blood War on behalf of their patrons, rooting out and exterminating any Demonic activity with extreme prejudice.

Usually either results of rituals or demonic corruption seeping into the world, rarely demonic rape babies.

They are divided into stable bloodlines, which are essentially their own subraces and represent when the demonic traits become consistently passed down from generation to generation. Unstable races are usually 1st-5th generation sometimes more, sometimes less and their traits are pretty much randomized with more becoming consistent with each generation.
>>
>>55214745
Nightstalkers, Dark Brotherhood, etc. if you want to edge it up. Name it after the leader of the company or the location it was founded if you want to be boring.
>>
>>55214799
I don't know much about Warcraft lore, but funnily enough, the Yuan-ti in the setting are the ones responsible for unleashing the plague in an attempt to cripple/exterminate their enemies. They screwed up immediately afterwards though, as their various allies all struck out for themselves and turned on each other, and their own theocratic power structure fell into infighting between the devotees of Mersshaulk, Dendar and the newly apotheosised Sseth. Since then they've been dormant and most of the world has forgotten they exist, but they still slumber in remote, heavily protected temple-fortresses.

The first adventure I'm running the party through is centred on a race against a rogue Yuan-ti cell to recover the three divine relics the serpent gods bestowed to their priests, that allowed them to perform and empower the ritual that ignited the plague. The Nightmare Speaker and Mind Whisperer that lead the cell are trying to create another plague behind the back of Mersshaulk's Pit Masters, who are in power after their schism, but urge caution and prefer staying hidden.

Rogue makes sense if you think about a street urchin stealing to survive

Barbarian for temper tantrums

Monk because they were taken in as a baby because of a Dhali Lama type deal or were orphaned and only the monastery could raise them

Sorcerer as you said

>>55215291
Cleric for the reasons he said

Pages started at age 7 and became squires at 14 then Knights at 21. So some one between the ages of 7 and 14 could concievably be a low level fighter.

Ranger could be the child of the local lords gamewarden or poacher being taught the family business

Bard because if Hansen can have a major hit single then I'm certain a child who was unnaturally gifted could learn to play a magical intrusment/sing/dance.

Pretty much the only ones I can't really see being a thing from ages 5 to 13 would be Druids, Paladins, and Wizards. Those are classes that take years of training or oaths sworn with consent. If you can play a 14 yo I could maybe kind of see paladin working.

I was legit just asking for advice on how to build a "gestalt" type character in 5e, and which classes meshed well together.

This won't affect you, I am sure.

Also, for the record, the feat is given as a baseline (or a trade in for 2 ASI), which makes VHuman redundant. You can stop pick a normal human for +1 to everything, but 2 feats at level 1 give a too much upfront.

Reminder that the progression means 2 ASIs at level 4. I get potentially two feats there anyway.
>>
>>55216148
Gestalt isn't meant for 5e, most especially not in the way his DM is implementing it. And yes, I'm mad his table will basically be shitting on game balance "because it's cool". I guarantee it will result in confusion and bad habits that will make him have to unlearn this nonsense next time he plays a game under somebody sane who isn't trying to force the round peg of superpowered campaigns into the square hole of 5e

You want to stack classes? I already said it. Due to action economy any spellcaster plus fighter. Or any 2 spellcasters together, especially Charisma ones. And sorcadin. In short you'll be game breakingly good very quickly and the actual novelty will wear off quickly and also be super confusing. If anyone isn't super OP by level 4 it's because they don't know the fucking rules.

I think the alignment system still has value, though I do acknowledge that many overthink it and make dumb mistakes when using it. The alignment system is a useful guideline for new players on how to play their characters. For example, LG characters can't steal for personal gain and still be LG. This sounds like easy to grasp shit, but think of games like Skyrim where you are free to steal anything and everything and sell it back to the person you stole it from. The game will still refuse to stop treating you like a selfless hero even after you shiv that one annoying priest in Whiterun after dark or after joining a literal thieves guild. It can give new players the wrong idea about how they should go about playing someone that is suppose to be respectful of the law and an all around good person. The main flaw with the system is that DMs don't spend enough effort reminding players that their characters can change alignment as they develop and grow into new people. Or worse, the DM forces everyone to stick to their original alignment or they punish them, but bad players will be bad players regardless. Obviously, a veteran player doesn't need a guideline on how to run their character (hopefully), but I still think it has merit for the newbies.

Tell him it's a bad idea and that whoever plays under that DM is an idiot, and probably a lolsorandumb who never bothered learning the rules to begin with so now is accustomed to being overpowered because it's their only way to mitigate being massively retarded. I see this at a table next to mine all the time, it's a group with a soft touch DM. Hes a good guy and a great storyteller but the players from his table are insufferable to play with because they're so used to having their retarded antics be accommodated by him and so they don't know how any of their characters work. There was a wizard who unironically thought it would be le funny to barge open dungeon doors and didn't understand how preparing spells worked.

It's not that he thinks it is unfair, but that he prefers level gating some of the options.

We get double ASI, so the Vhuman restriction is just to prevent memesters from going CBE+SS at level 1.

It is basically the same reason he isnt giving us our class features before the level we are intended to get them at.
>>
>>55214166
You need to accommodate him as the GM.

Basically, for hin to feel like a 4emonk, he needs something to help him there. Either you reduce the standard cost of his abilities, or you give him items that help him feel like an elemental monk.

And ignore the shitty rule change they made to water whip. Whoever did that had a hateboner for monks, and just wanted to see that subclass burn and suffer.

>Say they failed their knoeledge checks, so they wouldn't convey the proper information, but lets him do it at a disadvanatage
>Every time afterwards, he "automatically assumes" that everyone perfectly explains any picture or written document.
>Complains for 10 minutes every time I tell him he gets disadvantage on checks regarding these explained pictures or texts.
>Gets into an ambush with archers
>complains when he cant cast magic missiles at them (thry were at 50 feet, beyond his blindsense range), and keeps arguing that he knows where they are the moment they started firing arrows after the party, even though none of them hit him.
>Gets to level 4
>Asks to get ritual caster for his EK subclass choice
Like, why are you going for a blind character, and then complaining aabout being blind afterwards, and acting like you aren't blind after all?

It is just obnoxius and time consuming. And honestly, anyone thinking blindsense is better than ordinary sight, is a white room meta faggot, who has never played 5e (or any other D&D for that matter). You lose far too much for not having a normal sight, and the benefit of knowing where everyone around you is, is not actually a mechanical benefit outside of stealthed targets.

This took effect from session 5 an onwards, because by then, you should fucking know what your attack modifier and AC is.

>I roll 17, do I hit?
>I dont know GM, do you?
>I roll an additional d6
>Now I hit you at 22, so I am guessing I do!

>>55216802

Then the answer is clear. You must start over and roll an artificer, delighting in the gun and magic items afforded to you by the class itself.

So I'm kind of lost here about what I need to do with my party and looking for some advice. We're a relatively new group of players, myself included, and my friends are generally awful at combat scenarios. To put it into perspective I gave them a baby sitting NPC for an encounter that was two levels higher than the party, they're two and he's four. I sent a group of four modified shadows at them, no resistances. One of them is holding a NPC that died moments before (I didn't mind this too much and actually gave them an inspiration point since I thought it would be something that character would do), the other does nothing but trying to make an unseen servant act as a distraction by pouring Ink, the fighter runs in takes a single slash and then tries to run away from the whole encounter, the ranger NPC I sent rolled a 1 so I couldn't do much to help them. The only one who had any sense in his head was the Druid who ran in and went full bear mode to fuck the shadows up and keep them in check. I had to scale back the rest of the encounters that session in fear of causing a total party wipe in session three. I have talked to them about what they do in combat before, but, I don't know what I should do from here regarding the matter. At best all I can think of is making everything brain dead easy, but, I'm afraid that would make the encounters lose any meaning.

Then when the crossover happens I'll introduce Thorn and Rose and run the Death House. Hoping this will take us through the week or so. If players like the game/setting/mood I'm thinking of running CoS as a full module but I'll have to wait and see.

I've run several adventures as the DM (Marionette, Horseman, Darklord), and I've played through almost the entirety of the season (every adventure since the Marionette)

They have great material for you to work with, from encounters to designer monsters, but the things I absolutedly *hated* the most was the "adventure leagueicisms", like the impossibly silly and restrictive rail roading in a campaign setting that sends rail roads to the winds, and so in a way, rewards the maximum amount of damage output eficency instead of anything else.

I have ran the Marionette as part of curse of strahd, and results have been overwhelmingly positive, after heavy rewrites
