What is your character's relationship with the Law, /pfg/?

Fuck city campaigns, fuck political intrigue campaigns, fuck Pathfinder for anything but dungeon crawling and mindless slaughter.
>>
>>55209223
Zone of Truth isn't infallible, and if you read the fine print Speak with Dead doesn't work if the corpse you're trying to use is too badly mangled in the facial region.
>>
>>55209223
Whoever is doing the intrigue sure doesn't play by the rules. Zone of Truth can be avoided, Speak With Dead can be stopped with a few axe swings, Scry, Augury and Commune can be fooled. As for the level thing, well anything above level 6 is borderline superhuman so you got me there.

No. Strapping a sword to your crotch doesn't make it an unarmed attack, it just makes you use a sword wrong. Same goes for strapping things to your wrists. And gauntlets don't benefit from Might Fist because they are a weapon already and Mighty Fist only affects your fists or natural attacks.

I think you have that backwards, I want to treat unarmed attacks as a "heavy blade" for sake of feats and class features (like weapon training). I can treat a gauntlet-covered hand as a heavy blade on its own, as it can be modified, but I was looking to see if it was unreasonable to apply it to unarmed attacks in general.

The sad part is how the Dwarf ran that last encounter.

For melee, he normally has a +8. It would have been +9 because of Hatred. For ranged, it's +3. His setup would have required him to go throw Alchemist Fire at a five gallon barrel from behind some stone desks (two range increments).

I thought he would have stood on top of the stone desks to get the higher ground advantage, used some maneuvers, and used Defensive Focus to regain those maneuvers and gotten Combat Reflexes to kill the four orc swordsmen while the other two characters killed the two archers. The swordsmen had AC 14, and the dwarf would have had +10 to hit.

Alright, I can't find it myself so far, so I need a hand here.

I know someone remembers that time that one of the Pathfinder devs said that they wanted to keep martials down, that they couldn't be allowed to be equal to caster, and all that shit.

Where's the source on that?
>>
>>55214890
They've never said something like that explictly. The only time they've said anything close to that is "wanting to maintain the balance/theme of what was in the CRB" which then had the MSPAINT text of "Since Martial's are under powered in the CRB, that means keeping them down."

Honestly though, I attribute a lot of PF's issues to incompetence and delusion as to how their own game functions as opposed to outright malice on Paizo's part.

How rare should higher level NPC's actually be? I'm trying to develop a program, and thus the math behind it, to stat out every NPC in a given population. Assuming that your average human NPC is level 3 or so by their thirties (level 1 upon majority, 2 levels gained in miscellaneous experience) how many HIGH level characters should there be in that population? 1 in 100,000 being above level ten? 1 in 1,000,000? Lots of settings assume there are clerics around that can cast resurrection, a spell requiring level 13. How common should these guys _acutally_ be?
>>
>>55216876
The only thing that matters in that calculation is that when a Wizard hits Level 20, the world ends.

Or at least, Fallout ends. Those dungeons you are clearing out were shelters. You were never in ye Olde England.
>>
How reliable are gnolls as mercenaries?
>>
>>55217142
As reliable as they are as waifus.
>>
>>55217152
So extremely?
>>
>>55217142
Depends on just how hard your GM goes on their Chaotic Evil alignment.

Gnolls are generally pretty good as mercenaries if you assume that they work for whoever can keep them paid well and allow them some excesses every so often--a rape here, a few slaves taken there.

If your GM decides that they're basically creatures of pure id who never do anything but rape and murder, even when it would actively harm them and their employer, then you should not hire them.
>>
>>55217142
Well the rule of thumb (for medieval warfare) is that most professional militaries had their morale break at about 30% casualties, because that's the point where the fear of getting shot/stabbed switches from "this happens to other people" to "this may happen to me next". Green troops tend to break a bit easier (breaking at 10-15% casualties).

As Gnolls are big, violent and have cannibalistic tendencies, it would be reasonable to assume that they cleave closer to professional military (or even greater) standards rather than green recruits .

That is, if they're paid well. Mercenaries tend not to die for the cause like patriots or revolutionaries. A fight has to be worth fighting, and it has to have the potential of them getting out and being able to spend their loot. They're not cowardly, but they aren't stupid either. They may have their own clerics or priests but they're not going to be as reckless as things that have natural regeneration.

Gnolls are pretty happy to fight stupid things, and against things that are honor-bound because that makes them predictable, but they're not very fond of fighting highly intelligent opponents or things that don't give a shit about honor. Hobgoblins on the other side of the battlefield will make Gnolls pretty pissy (they'll suddenly want to be paid a *lot* more).
>>
Has anyone made cards for DSP PoW maneuvers at all?
>>
>>55217415
If someone did, he did not shared.

You can fill this cards - http://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/28858/Blank-Cards-Collection?manufacturers_id=523&it=1

Or use one of the online spell-card (or 4e power) generators.
>>
>>55217142
Gnolls are evil and live for excess. They're also lazy shits that take slaves. They're not gonna be very good soldiers, but if you hire them for a one-off thing where you state that they can do as they please aside from one or two limiters, then you should be golden.

Is runelords worth playing from book 1~3? I was fortunate enough to play it from book 4 to completion but the beginning of the campain remains a mystery to me.

Since I'm trying to break away from my usual character types I'll probably try for a tian native that set up shop in sandpoint.

Would this fit in with the theme? Hard to tell since the Player's guide doesnt cover these topics.

It might, I could go into a bit more detail if you were fine with spoilers related to Jade Regent, but a Tian family that feels some sort of obligation to work with the Kaijitsu family could work quite well. Again, you don't even have to make it about honor or duty or anything like that, it could be wholly pragmatic considering Tian people tend to stick together.

Perhaps your character is a Tian native from Kalsgard (the largest Tian population outside of Tian Xia) who moved down to Sandpoint for the warmer weather, easier trade prospects, and upon hearing a successful Tian family is already there?

>I dont think that family was also mentioned in the PG so I guess it could work if I keep it on the vague side.

The Kaijitsu family is pretty important in Book 1 of RotRL, it's not a spoiler at all to mention them. That said, be careful when searching for information about them, since the Wiki page is pretty casual about revealing story beats that happen in Book 1 and Jade Regent.

All you need to really know about the Kaijitsu family is them being part of Magnimar's nascent nobility, who have decided to move to Sandpoint about 30+ years ago to run a successful Glassworks business. The family's patriarch is Lonjiku Kaijitsu, a misanthropic old man accused of killing his wife five years prior, who maintains horrid relations with his children Ameiko and Tsuto, the former being the spunky, irreverent proprietor of the best tavern in town (The Rusty Dragon) and the latter being a half-elf (and thus a bastard) troublemaker of the worst sort.

It's not about whether I care about what people think, it's about knowing the thread pattern. There are things that trigger the absolute FUCK out of people and cause shitstorms, meaning you pretty much CANNOT bring it up without causing at least half-a-thread's worth of a firestorm.

It could be something as simple as an image, even.

>>55225728
I honestly haven't been able to care much about homebrew, but that's mostly because I never actually see anyone allow it so my spirits are down. Why get hype for something like "Muscle memory as a feat chain!" if I can't actually use it?
Closest thing offhand I like is the "errata compilation", but that's not homebrew, and it seems to have stopped updating.

Remember that mechanics and fluff are mostly separate no matter the level and stuff like "Average person is X strong" gets thrown out the window because adventurers and fringe cases and especially in the case of player characters who are canonically way too strong to be as strong as they are in such a short time span bar divine intervention. Fluffwise wayfinders and by extension ioun stones are pretty much impossible to make unless you've studied your life a dozen of them or have access to Society's knowledge of the said items (even an implication that ioun stones are found as is in ruins and just circulate from wizard to adventurer to bandit to monster to dragon hoard) and rules are there for them because, well, everything has to have rules unless they are artifacts. And fluff wise, again, Pathfinders are real keen on keeping their secrets secrets since their whole existence is to keep old stuff under a blanket.

Im wondering about Flurry of Blows.
If I'm a level 5 monk and I make a full attack, how many attacks with each hand do i get and at what attack bonus?
>>
>>55228038
You sound like you're new to Pathfinder, so I'm going to suggest you either crack open a copy of the Pathfinder Core Rulebook or look on the PFSRD (a website that collects various published material for Pathfinder which people like you can view for free). Find the Monk's class feature table and take a gander at it. I'll show you where their page on the Monk is.

http://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/core-classes/monk/

Now, if you look at that table towards the top of the page, you'll see one column is labeled "Flurry of Blows Attack Bonus". Reference that against your level, and you'll see how many attacks you make while using Flurry of Blows, and what your bonus on each attack in the flurry is. That number accounts for your BAB, but not anything else you might add like your STR mod or bonuses from things like Weapon Focus or magical enhancements. For a 5th level Monk, that "base" flurry works out to +3/+3, meaning two attacks at a +3 bonus each. Again, remember to add stuff like your STR mod to each attack because that's not factored in.

Also, as a monk you can take those attacks with any part of your body. You could deliver both with one hand, one with each hand, or you could use neither hand and attack using kicks and headbutts. It makes no difference; the damage you deal and your bonus to hit with each attack won't be affected by which part of your body you're using.
>>
>>55228574
lol, im not new. I've just never been a DM in the position of needing to know the way FOB works.

Thanks though. I'll remember that.
>>
>>55228645
>>55228574
I was wondering because im building an NPC that is a 5 Monk, 5 Barbarian, 5 Duelist.
Plus I was going to build guard NPCs that can use that attack and have Keen Stump Knives
>>
>>55228645
If you're not actually new to Pathfinder, then I'm going to give you the slightly more complicated explanation of how Flurry of Blows works. When a Monk uses his Flurry, he's basically just being treated as if he 1) had full BAB from his class instead of 3/4s and 2) had all the Two-Weapon-Fighting feats his would qualify for if he actually had full BAB (and ignored the other prereqs for the feats).

>>55228663
In that case, when he's flurrying, treat his monk levels as if they contributed full BAB instead of 3/4s (a +5 bonus instead of a +3) and give him one extra attack at his full BAB, but apply a -2 penalty to all of his attacks.

So for a Monk 5/Barbarian 5/Duelist 5, that would be an attack routine of +13/+13/+8/+3.
>>
>>55228752
Neat.
And can the natural weapons used by Flurry take advantage of Weapon Finesse?

And using Flurry is always all or nothing, in that you use all the Flurry attacks or you use none? Because how I was envisioning this character would be played is that they would swing a sword, and then maybe punch/kick
>>
>>55228807
You can't actually use natural weapons with Flurry of Blows at all, unless you take Feral Combat Training. The extra shitty part is that it must be taken individually for each type of natural attack, so if for example you have a bite and two claw attacks, you would need to take it twice (once for bite attacks and once for claw attacks) to be able to even USE those attacks while flurrying.

But, if you hypothetically did that, then yes. Natural weapons are considered light weapons, and Weapon Finesse can be applied to any light weapon.

As for the second question, certain weapons are considered "monk weapons". If you're using a monk weapon, you can replace any number of the unarmed strikes you get from Flurry of Blows with attacks using that weapon. If a weapon isn't a monk weapon, you can't use it with Flurry of Blows at all.
>>
>>55228918
so if i have the +13/+13/+8/+3 and its my turn, I could make 4 attacks with any combo of punches, kicks, etc. But I cant split that between my body parts and a non-Monk weapon?
>>
>>55229008
Right. The stump knifes sound like they're something you homebrewed, if not they're something I never heard of before. If you made them yourself, you could just also make them Monk weapons. Or if these monks have been using these stump knifes for a long time, you can say they get to treat them as if they were Monk weapons because they're so practiced with them. It's stretching the rules a bit, but it's not like Paizo is going to kick down your door like a SWAT team for doing it.
>>
>>55229057
My friend claims theyre from DnD 3. They apparently are 1d4 with 17-20/x3 or something.
He brought that up in talking about doing a CC/ Crit Bleed Monk.
>>
>>55229103
I never played 3.0 or 3.5, so I wouldn't know. You're kind of on your own there, but weapons don't normally go beyond a crit range of 18-20/x2 in Pathfinder, so I'd exercise some caution.
>>
>>55229122
heh, they would be given to my NPC's as i dont think my PC's would want to lose a hand so willingly. And they would only be on NPC's my charcters would encounter at Level 10 minimum
Also, how much would it cost to forge a Keen weapon would you say? I know Masterwork is like +300 GP or something high
>>
File: WizardTeachesCrafting.png (140KB, 1306x770px) Image search: [Google]
WizardTeachesCrafting.png
140KB, 1306x770px
>>55229158
Adding Keen to a weapon isn't a flat increase to the price. The cost is based on how magical the end result is, so it depends on how magical it was before you made it Keen.

That said, if it's just a +1 Keen weapon, it would cost 8,000 GP (plus however much a regular stump knife is worth).
>>
>>55229202
what are the different levels of Keen and what do they do?
>>
>>55229326
Enchantments don't come in different levels, the "+X" refers to the actual enhancement bonus of the weapon, which is added as a bonus on attack and damage rolls.

Keen doubles the crit range of a weapon, so it would turn a 17-20/x3 weapon into a 13-20/x3 weapon.
>>
>>55229352
okay, the way it was worded sounded like each Keen added 1 to the CC.
So putting Keen on a plain weapon costs around 8k. Does the application of Keen only happen at the time of creation?
>>
>>55229394
If you're asking whether a weapon can be made Keen after only when the weapon is being made, the answer is no. You can add enchantments to weapons (and armor) any time, assuming you have the Craft Magic Arms and Armor feat or access to someone else who does (it can be assumed that if you're in a big enough city, you could find someone you can pay to enchant your weapon).
