What mechanic would you bring back from leagacy/vintage into standard/modern and why? i woud personally pick threshold, that seems like a interesting mechanic to mess with

So after realising that Knightfall is the king of midrange decks and getting swept by unfair decks at my LGS, I've decided to mainboard 3 Geist of Saint Traft. God he shits all over everyone's dicks when they aren't playing fair.

I wouldn't think it would fizzle since it still has a legal target in your Archaeomancer.

You still get your archaeomancer back since it is still a legal target. A spell that targets is only countered if all of the things it is targeting become illegal

What the hell is an unfair deck that doesn't beat a 4 turn clock on turn 3?
>>
>>55194582
With Noble Hierarch it's a 3 turn clock on turn 2. And the deck runs Spell Queller as disruption.
>>

Yeah point still stands.
>>
what do you all think of UW control as an archetype?
>>
>>55194881
I keep wanting to add red for Lightning Bolt and Lightning Helix
But I also really enjoy keeping decks two colors.
I like a build with Restoration Angel much more than Geist of Saint Traft. The deck is more like midrange tempo once you start building around Geist of Saint Traft.
>>
>>55194881
I'm happy that Modern has a popular control deck again, but also somewhat disappointed that it happened on the backs of a bunch of powerful Planeswalkers and not a counterspell reprint or something a bit more traditional.

I'm prone to punting and need to git gud. Should I force myself to play a hard deck to make me learn from my mistakes, or find a deck that is forgiving of mistakes.
I don't want to spend a lot. Could I use this deck to try to dissect things? I already have the non-budget lands, so I don't need to downgrade the manabase. Unfortunately I have no plans of buying Chalice because 1) Chalice is degenerative 2) it's really expensive 3) I want to git gud. 3 also applies to Leyline of Sanctity.

Turn one forest, arbor. Turn two land, utopia sprawl on untapped land. Tap it for two mana, then untap and tap it again.

>>
So in a burn vs burn matchup, where burn deck B is mainboarding a playset of helixs, which deck is favored to win? How important is an eidolon in the match?
>>
>>55201988
Eidolon hurts both sides. I'm not going to go break out a spreadsheet for it but all else being equal, I'm sure helix especially gives an edge as it establishes a 6 life disparity, requiring another spell for the first burn deck.

However I get fucking shit on by burn because I run a ton of fetch and shocks so I might not be the best source.

T2 Land, Utopia Sprawl, make 4, Garruk Wildspeaker, +1, Utopia Sprawl, Blood Moon

Hey guys. Since goyf is at an all-time low price I decided to get a playset.

What are some good decks that still use it?
>>
>>55202816
Yeah lavamancer seems kinda slow. I liked the helixes for the life swing in case I get matched up against another burn though. Helps to offset some of the fetch/shocks while being able to act as instant emergency removal. Any particular reason why boros charm other than the obvious ones?

does anyone else think this card is underrated? I feel like forcing your opponent to attack with mana dorks and give you a 3/4 is pretty satisfying.
>>

-2 Helix
+2 Ararka's Command

You've got a lot of dudes, and the bushwhack effect on the command plus the skullcrack is pretty solid.
>>
>>55203010
I'd need some stomping grounds then. Is helix really that bad? I know people say it's one of the weaker cards in the burn line-up but I feel like people underestimate how game changing getting some of the life that you've fetched or shocked away can be.

Maybe I'm just too paranoid about tossing out too much life and getting killed by a flying + galv blast or a shadow.

It was fine in limited, but in any other format you can't really waste a removal slot on a spell that's not guaranteed to work, and doesn't get things off the table immediately. Plus it's wholly useless as removal for any big creature that your opponent is attacking with anyway
>>

>>
>>55203095
Obligatory fatal push suggestion. Inquisition of kozilek is strong too. If you're going to run infect, run lashwrithe
>>
>>55203198
I believe this is the list. It uses Tasigur. The one I've played against uses Tasigur, but it also had Flaying Tendrils in SB.
https://www.mtggoldfish.com/archetype/modern-abzan#paper
Don't know if I would recommend Liliana's Defeat in SB, but depends on your meta. In a month the card may be relevant when the Planeswalker uniqueness rule goes away.
>>
>>55203290
Inquisition has dropped; I'll check it out. Fatal Push is nice, but a bit pricey. Lashwrithe is a good idea. Thanks!
>>
>>55203339
Also consider nighthawks/gifted aether born in side versus creature heavy decks. Shizo, deaths storehouse is a neat land, but you should also be running ghost quarters for disruption.

If you don't like fatal push, dismember is okay usually.
>>
is modern fun yet?

Nighthawks are basically your way to deter aggro decks. No one is going to swing into it, even if they can pump over it. They're forced to remove it. Also you can sneak a lashwrithe onto one mid combat to gain tons of life for free.

Have my "secret" mono black tech.
>>
>>55203558
Bad Moon is nice, too. Not many decks run Enchantment removal, right?
>>

Yes. You can pretty much play whatever the fuck you want. Even infect is sort of making a small comeback
>>
>>55203509
>nonlegendary planeswalkers to theoretically exist
I'm pretty sure that would be the worst decision they could make.
>>
>>55203579
The thing is bad moon is outclassed by other cards. The best part is if most of your stuff has 4 toughness, that's the magic number in modern. Versus red decks, most can't/don't often deal more than three, so it makes your stuff take two cards to remove. In a deck with a won of 1-for-1s its simply best to make them spend more cards than you to survive. Then you overwhelm them.
>>
>>55203615
One of the new Jaces makes nonlegendary Jace tokens.
>>
>>55203432
ye it's pretty good right now
>>
>>55203622
Crusader has protection from red, and Vatmother has 5 toughness, so Bad Moon wouldn't be too relevant for defense outside of sided Nighthawks.
>>
>>55203626
Couldn't they have accomplished this under the old rules by just removing the JACE type from the planeswalker tokens?
>>
>>55193827

Oh my god it actually fucking happened. I have two of these, I guess I should have bought a playset. I guess people will play a bad Sol Land if it means getting to play planeswalkers faster.

>>
>>55203558

>>
>>55206678
The problem infect faces right now is whether it wants to play an all in strategy like it used to, where it rushed down as quickly as possible, or more slow, like it did when twin was still around, where it would run cards like serum visions and wild defiance and try to chunk them down and burst when the opportunity arose
With all the grixis shadow it's pretty hard to play the all in line, and that's a pretty hard matchup for the deck regardless of which way it wants to play
if shadow was gone though the deck would probably be tier 2

Mono Red v Red/White = R/W
R v Red/Green = R
R/G v R/W = R/W unless skullcrack/AK magic

Red/white is usually slower than RG but runs less creatures and has a better sideboard. RG has an entirely acceptable sideboard and is the most aggressive. Mono Red's sideboard is abysmal but it wins the "mirror" G1 half the time due to fetches alone. Three color is great but it requires fetches and other burn decks are likely to punish you, and you often outright lose to monored which is a little embarrassing to watch.

I'm torn in between which will be my second Modern Deck (my first on is UW Control).
Considering my budget, the Decks i found were:
- Boros Burn (without Arid Mesas (in the moment (can use them in the UWR Tempo/Control later on (instead of S.Tarns)))
- Eldrazi&Taxes (the Deck, even with 2x Dark Confidents, costs less than 300€)
- UR Gifts Storm (would buy Polluted Deltas instead of Scalding Tarns, and share the Flooded Strands between the 2 Decks (would probably buy Scalding Tarns later in order to also allow UWR Tempo/Control build))
- Bant Knightfall (would still need to save and extra 100€)
- Titanshift (also need to save a bit more).

Considering this Decks, which I enjoy them all (every has their ups and downs), which would be your opinion?
>>

It doesn't matter which red fetches you run in Burn.

You can grab Martyr Proc for between 70 and 140 ticks depending on how much you want to spend on sideboard cards like Surgical Extraction. It's an ok deck, except for the fact that it literally cannot beat Gx Tron.
You can build a budget living end for around 150 ticks with most of the cost going into the mana base that can be used in other decks. https://www.mtggoldfish.com/archetype/modern-living-end-40625#online
>>

Oh man that'd be bonkers, he would essentially be a psudo thirst for knowledge on wheels, and a consistent 4mana 5/5 at that

it's a 3/3 that cantrips in red at it's worst, and a 5/5 with gas in decks that accomadate the downsides (tons of yard syngergies, a split of lands and creatures with maybe a sprinkle of interaction if you want it to be more consistent)

It's a weird card, and the body is okay for a cantrip creature (especially offcolor) but in general it doesn't line up well with creatures in modern.
i think it requires both looting synergies (to make it better than a regular cantrip creature) and a sober split of creatures/lands to make it a contender

This list is fantastic, but I have a few gripes with the funofs, mainly battlerage and to a degree boon. Boon is pretty sweet, but your only good beaters are 3 Pride 3 Champ and 2 Serra (which already has flying).
In a config with 4 champ 4 pride, I would love a spicy griff's boon, but would consider cutting it otherwise

The cloudshift is pretty sweet as a protection spell, could be not half bad in countering spot removal, but the etb part doesn't go as far in a deck like this as it would in a deck with etb effect dorks like reflector mage etc. It's a cool spell, pretty much a dispel vs BGx with a bit of etb proc for the sisters/pridemate, but I would fill other slots first (more sisters, and maybe more champ/pridemate/norin)

I'd trim a berserker too for another soul attendant
this is all imo so take it with a pinch of salt, regardless sick deck bro im jelly. It's actually kinda meta right now with all the burn about

The Cloudshift is actually normally used to trigger the Ranger an additional time for 1 mana

U/W control can almost be considered T1 at this moment with the amount of people playing it. All the staples like cryptics, colonnades, verdicts have all went up at least 50% to support that popularity also. It's indeed good within the current meta, there's typically only 2 problems it runs into.

Timing out and getting killed in 2-3 turns.
>>
>>55216526
UW Control is the most popular version. It's more tap-out oriented than the other two, with many planeswalkers and sweepers. As it's a dual color deck, it can run enough utility lands to create a mana denial suite alongside Spreading Seas.
Example list: http://mtgtop8.com/event?e=16059&d=298880&f=MO

Esper Control is more draw-go oriented, built around using Think Twice and Esper Charm as draw engines. It has the best late game of the three, and does the best in the mirror and against midrange and combo. However, it has a very color intensive manabase, which can leave it vulnerable to Blood Moon decks and fast aggro.
Example list: http://mtgtop8.com/event?e=15391&d=293637&f=MO

Jeskai Control takes several forms, some more traditional counter-burn style, and some based after the Wafo-Tapa draw go decks. The addition of red burn spells gives more early answers and flexibility at the cost of the late game power of Esper Charm or the mana denial of Spreading Seas.
Here's an example of each:
post-Nahiri Jeskai: http://mtgtop8.com/event?e=16668&d=303093&f=MO

I'm interested. What cards do you plan on using?
I hear about decks that use Starfield of Nyx as a finisher and enchantment reanimator.
I've also seen an Esper deck that utilizes instants and sorceries with flashbacking to pump up a Myth Realized, but that is a very different strategy.
There is also the idea of making a pillow fort with Runed Halos, Nevermore, Gideon's Intervention, Ghostly Prison, Sphere of Safety, and Oblivion-like enchantments. Also pic related is going to exist soon.

Is it possible to pimp these budget decks with stronger cards I already have (not entire playsets) or will they simply stop working if I add or change cards?

I've never played the game so I don't understand stuff like this.
>>
>>55219545
You can make the decks stronger with better cards, but if you don't know what you're doing you'd better not. Especially since stronger cards generally cost lots of money and it's advised not to spend lots of money on the game until you know what you're doing.
>>
>>55219545
Most of them can be upgraded in various ways, but none of them can really become tier 1 deck easily. If you go to the article for each deck you can see non-budget versions.
>>
>>55219565
>cards I ALREADY have
>>55219581
Not what I want to know.
Let's say I want to pimp a budget deck with the two Goyfs I already own, is that possible or not? Can it work with only two and not a playset or will it only be detrimental to the strategy of the deck? Can it work only with certain decks?

You see what I'm talking about?

I have many good cards but not entire playsets.
>>
>>55219624
If it would be good as a 4 of it'll probably be good as a 1/2/3 of. Some of the decks don't really have upgrades because they're very janky combo decks, like Zombie Hunt, but mostly you'll be able to augment them with cards you already have.
>>
>>55219643
>If it would be good as a 4 of it'll probably be good as a 1/2/3 of
Are you sure? Aren't decks built also on the odds of drawing a certain card, especially considering the mana curve and the development/unfolding of the deck strategy?
>>
>>55219683
*Aren't decks built also on the odds of drawing a certain card depending on how much you need that card in the beginning of the game

What I wanted to say.
>>
>>55219683
Yes, but it's not like your deck is going to light itself on fire if you fuck up. Generally adding good cards to budget decks will improve them but you're going to have to actually, you know, play the game and try out some things for yourself.
>>
>>55219705
Wasting time doing wrong things when everything has already been theorized and practised is stupid, if I can get a heads on on the direction to follow and what to be aware of it would be much better, as a noob and not being an autistic genius that can catch up with 20+ years of magic theory in a month.
>>
>>55219745
Well unfortunately for you half-budget-half-good cards decks don't have a lot of writing yet, so you'll have to settle for googling 'how many lands do I put in my deck' plus other general deck building stuff and try the rest yourself.
>>
>>55219745
1 good card and 3 budget versions of that card is better than 4 budget versions. You're okay if the budget vesrion does the same general thing but slightly worse.

I've been cooking up a fairly generic innistrad-flavored cube of 450 cards, and it's the first one I've ever built; it's powered and I'm looking for some insight from people who have actually drafted cube quite a bit because I'm way in over my head and I need to know if there are any glaring balance inadequacies or things I'm not taking into consideration.

My goals with this cube is to stay fairly true to capturing what I think the original Innistrad plane did artistically, and to provide some fairly loose guidelines into deck archetypes, though most will end up being rather creature and tribe heavy. The people I'll be drafting with are not ultra competitive players.

Each creature type is shared by 2 colors with a few odd color exceptions like black spirits, golgori zombies instead of the black/blue of the sets, green spirits, etc.
The biggest thing I'm concerned with is probably Avacyn, simply because she's a default pick no matter what color anyone is playing, and if I'm oversaturating with artifacts that really don't serve a purpose compared to picking say.. another colored card of what someone chooses to draft. I like the themes they provide but I'm not sure since I finished my rough draft of this thing today. There are a few cards I think might contest as first pick though, but again, limited experience building a cube environment so any input is welcome, and be brutal with me if you have to.

http://www.cubetutor.com/viewcube/84533

What does it not have that it needs for fun?
What does it have that might break player choices or end up illustrating a "best color/combo"?
Do I need to prune back the power on any colors?
Are there certain staples that I need to include for balance purposes?

Built to Smash is also a good substitute for bulk if you want, and only R to cast.
Obviously the spells could be tuned a little bit for your preferences but you get the basic idea, pump up double strikers to punch through anything and then transition into your late game with Mirrorwings giving your whole field the effects of pump spells, multiple instances of scry, and anti-removal.

How the FUCK do I stop gearhulk decks that recycle counterspells?

Red/Green aggro with as much artifact destruction cards as I can stuff in the deck.

Here's a budget deck that I built for fun. I think it's still under $50 including the street wraiths, but they can be cut for more black cyclers.
>>
>>55225748
You could play
>Gutteral Response to counter the counterspell or any other blue instant.
>Torpor Orb to stop Gearhulk and Snapcaster from flashbacking.
>Tormod's Crypt, Scavenging Ooze, Grafdigger's Cage, or Relic of Progenitus to stop the flashbacking.
>Play Prowling Serpopard to make counterspells against your creatures muda.
>Make your deck faster so that they can't keep up. If you're running creatures try Burning Tree Emissary and Bushwhacker for a heavy swingout.
>>
>>55225265
Burn on a budget doesn't even need Goblin Guide
You just slap some elementals and call it a day
It's still pretty much the most effective budget deck

Any hints for a first time drafter? looking forward to my first round robin this week
>>
>>55220142
Given that the other gods are named? I think the point of calling it "The Scarab God" is because it's that guy none of the other gods like, no one even remotely likes, but he still exists.
Why would anyone know his name? He's just that asshole with the bugs that ruins everything.

The alternative is naming him something like "Eater of Hope", "Harvester of Souls" or something similarly Doom Metal and ominous, but equally vague.
Problem is, do this too often and it gets tiresome.
>>
>>55227066
What the fuck are vehicle decks?

I believe monowhite Soul Sisters can be built for <50, and some sub-standard lands allow GW.

A deck that uses vehicles.

Rate my UB Burn deck:

>Creatures
4 Snapcaster Mage
4 Eidolon of the Great Revel
4 Monastery Swiftspear
2 Grim Lavamancer
4 Wildfire Eternal

>Spells (Instant/Sorcery Etc)
4 Lightning Bolt
4 Abrade
4 Lava Spike
4 Magma Jet
3 Skullcrack
2 Flames of the Blood Hand
2 Serum Visions

4 Scalding Tarn
4 Sulfur Falls
8 Mountain
4 Island

Looking for some more blue mana cards to add to this but I dont know what to add.
>>
>>55227163
To be fair, it's the Modern general, and vehicles are bad.
Still, not knowing about Smuggler's Copter means he doesn't check the B&N announcements, or at most, opens the page and Ctrl + F's "Modern" before closing the page.

Xmage or Cockatrice.

Xmage for a new player and Cockatrice for an experienced one.

>>
Give me a meme deck I can get to put people on tilt, on the cheap preferably

Bonus points if it uses blood moons and isn't skred
>>
>>55227337
>implying
The problem with Cockatrice is when you're opponent starts playing wrong/breaking rules or insists you're a cheater because you understand how the stack works.
>>
>>55227359
The only real reason I said what I did is because Xmage automatically determines the rules and stuff like that for you while Cockatrice kinda leaves it up to the players.
It really is just personal preference.
>>
>>55227392
Literally any of the SaffronOlive decks. They're all awful jank that uses cards no other deck uses, because MTGgoldfish needs to move inventory.
>>
>>55227398

>>
>>55227177
It's UR or RU. UB is Blue/Black.

Cards you have that I'm not sure about:
>Wildfire Eternal (may be too slow)
>Abrade (flexible, but is probably best to cut some down and stick in the sideboard)
>Magma Jet (has scry to get rid of unwanted cards, but may be too inefficient to make up for the digging)
>Flames of the Blood Hand (might be too inefficient, but it is Skullcrack 5-8)
>Serum Visions (you have enough 1-drops that you probably don't need to waste slots cantripping)

Cards that might work:
>Blood Moon (if you switch some Mountains for more Islands; might be best in sideboard)
>Smash to Smithereens (SB tech that destroys artifacts while chipping the opponent down)
>Electrolyze (a bit expensive, but it cantrips and can potentially kill up to 2 creatures)
>Counterflux (SB tech for Storm)
>Stormchaser Mage (Flying, Haste, Prowess for 2 mana)
>Shatterstorm (anti-Chalice, anti-Affinity SB tech)
>Ceremonious Rejection (SB tech to fight back against Tron, Affinity, and Chalice)
>Spell Pierce/Negate (counters bad shit including Chalice, you can hold up mana so that if your opponent has nothing good to counter just burn then before you untap)
>Relic of Progenitus/Tormod's Crypt (anti-Dredge and other graveyard decks; the former may be mainboarded)
>Pyroclasm (wipes away tokens; Prowess creatures should be able to survive; Sideboard)
>Anger of the Gods (if Dredge is too awful, it may be best to just kill everyone; Sideboard)
>>
>>55227427
It's less cheating douches, and more people accusing you of cheating because they don't understand the rules themself.
You're online. Of course you're going to be dealing with retards.

who here stormhype??

for one more mana than cloud key you get both instant and sorcery which is pretty good, the flip is nice when going off, 4 mana is expensive but at least it dodges abrupt decay. I dunno, 4 is expensive as fuck though
>>
>>55227887
What's the flip do?

And personally i don't see it, why play this instead of just casting gifts?

>>55227392
Look for a combo deck named Seismic Swans or 42 land Swans Hunt. You basically use Treasure Hunt to get Swans of Bryn Argoll + Seismic Assault.
>>
>>55227887
I'd be down with it in a list that plays a couple of ascension. Maybe we'll see some list go back that direction.
>>
Now that I have spare time (and money) I've gotten interested in mtg again, most of my cards are post 7th edition so I'm assuming this is the format to dip back into. I have probably 500+ 8th edition and on cards. Is there an easier way to figure out what's good/or not beyond just sorting through them individually, and for that matter I should probably organize them by color correct? (Currently they're organized by block) I apologize in advance for being an idiot.
>>
How important are the fetchlands?

Can I stay relatively competitive without them, at least for FNM
>>
>>55229294
Depends on how many colors the deck is.
If it's three colors or more you absolutely need them.
>>
>>55229284
Sort out your rares, and if that pile is small enough, start price checking those
>>
>>55229308
I was thinking of jeskai delver, i have the shocklands

that or U/R storm, since I can build the deck relatively cheaply
>>
>>55229341

I've seen him being played in some U/W control lists, but rarely

casual here, about to play a casual party Commander game and my friend has a deck with Hivemind it.
I'm confused not knowing if every player still has to pay the copied card's mana cost as they use it or if they literally cast a spell for free
>>
>>55229472
Pretty unlikely, there are better top ends to a control deck in Modern than there are in Standard.
>>
>>55229485
No, they quite literally get to play it for free since they aren't actually casting the spell, they're casting a copy of it where the mana cost has already been played.
>>
>>55229472
He's seen some play in UW/x control decks but usually as a 1 of

Personally I loved playing him in esper control when I was on that, getting a 5/6 along with a free cryptic or esper charm felt great

Paid*
>>
>>55229529
>>55229495
So should I sell the singleton that I have before they drop in price?
>>
>>55229546
I mean, if you don't plan on playing it then I don't see why you should keep it.
The value will only go down over time, it isn't going to suddenly become a staple in Modern anytime soon.
>>
>>55229570
well I'm not a big fan of straight control and hes only played in those decks.
>>
I have no viable decks, should I sell Crucible of Worlds?
>>
>>55229884
Unless you want to use them in UW control or lantern control. Those just use a single copy of the card anyway. Can't really think of anything else that runs the card.
>>
>>55229884
ghost quartering someone 6 times is pretty fun

not as fun as wasteland but still very enjoyable
>>
>>55216973
Sorry about the lateness but I'm running solemnity and pairing that with glen elendra archmages and kitchen finks. It's just going to be a lot of 1 mana negates and infinite blockers.
>>
>>55229599
It's best to let it go if you're not using it since this ghulk is being played in standard right now. I used to run it in blue moon as a wincon with academy ruins.
>>
>>55230118
Some nips are doing really well with Tezz decks that have crucible, so i guess I'll come shill some more.
