What was the last town your party stopped at like, and how did you spend your time there?

Can you justify being a necromancer/druid?

Yeah

Pass without a trace allows for an exception of tracking through magical means.
The tressym tracks through his magic senses.

I'm not going to pretend I'm unarguably right, just that the ruling is out there.

And I admit the last one is more for my sake than all the time I have ever fantasized about killing the Druid. No, I'm not the DM for him (I am for another group though)

>>55178240

You certainly can, not sure you can do it well.

I mean, say you're a Twilight Druid, worshiper of the Raven Queen, who allows the command of fallen heroes in the battle against her hated enemies...
>>
>"Squired" Armor
>This piece of armor has been designed with multiple straps and buckles to be work like a jacket. It offers the same protection as a Chain Shirt, 13 + Dex Mod (max 2) to AC, with the advantage that it can be donned or doffed quickly by spending an action.

Yes, they were a thing back in 3.5, and they were called Blighters. There are also asshole, vampire-worshipping druids in Curse of Strahd adventure.

Has anyone here ever incorporated terrorism into their campaigns? We all know the chase of the BBEG (ugh) or the group of henchmen coming after the group, but what about an enemy that wears no uniform and hides in the crowd? How would you current group deal with such a threat, where the enemy could be a zealot commoner hiding right around the corner with an empowered fireball scroll at the ready?
>>
I want to play a tanky frontline character whose primary goal is to soak damage, but most options are really bland gameplay wise (like babarian or most fighters).

What are some nice options I have, when I already played a Paladin and a Stone Sorcerer?
Any fun things you can do as an Eldritch Knight (including multiclassing)?
>>
>>55178240
Furthermore how would one roleplay a druid beyond the fantasy hippie archetype
>>
>>55178308
One of my players had a real bitch of a time with this.

She got blue balled real mad when an artificer noble bad guy they were fighting suddenly had one of his animated armor constructs going GLMOP and encasing the enemy giving it pretty effed up Armor Class mid battle.

>>55178240

>Believe this world is unnatural and a paradign shift in nature will occur soon
>Just like meteors hitting causing evolutionary acceleration etc
>Life goal is to awaken the Tarrasque, befriend her and lead the world to a new world order of evolutionary perfection

That's how I play my evil druid anyway.
>>
>>55178408
I play my Guardian Aasimar Druid as a happy go lucky Maui-esque guy, who was sent by a dopy primordial godess to spread the joy of life around a little.
>>
>>55178452
Yeah I definitely want to play an abjuration wizard at some point too, but it seems like we will lack much of a frontline when we will start playing ToA
>>
>>55178404
Play an Abjuration Wizard Dwarf. Wear Medium Armor, soak damage through your shield and having a high AC. Enjoy casting spells that stun/root/weaken enemies etc.

You're a Dwarven Defender! But a smart one!
>>
>>55178408
Here's a list of wrong assumptions about druid that you're in no way obligated to comply with.
>Druid must be a loner and a hermit
>Druid must spend most of his time in the forest
>Druids only care about nature
>Druid must prefer animals to people
>Druid must have a heart attack every time he sees an animal killed, or a tree cut

Picrelated is a good example of a druid. A boy from a noble family, who doesn't really care about some fucking trees. He's pretty much forced by circumstances into becoming an apprentice to a druid, and his job entails not so much "Protecting muh sacred grove" and more like "Holy shit, unseelie fey want to wipe out the humanity (and also the seelie fey), I must stop them".
>>
>>55178408
My Half-Orc Druid is basically Norman Borlaug, ending all the woes of civilization through engendering a deeper understanding of agriculture and cooperation with the natural world. Fuck all the hippie shit, all you need to know is crop rotation and selective breeding of crops for pest resistance to improve yields. Now there are fewer people starving, so there's fewer people stealing. Crime's down, murder's down, everyone's cool, and these fucking city-dwellers can stop expanding into my goddamn forest because I just doubled the production of all their fields.

Stay on your own goddamn side of the line and no one gets lightning bolted.
>>
>>55178408
There was a badass example of a druid in the well written Jewel of Turmish FR novel.
He was amoral and completely devoted to the survival of the fittest trope, and was a badass warrior.

Druids were originally champions of balance and Neutrality in the same way paladins were champions of Law and Good. The druid position is that all the various factions of the multiverse - all those angels and demons, modrons and slaad, elementals and whatever the fuck else - should fuck off and leave the prime material plane to its natural existence.

So a "get off my lawn attitude" in which your "lawn" in the entire prime material plane. You're there to protect the physical world itself. You don't have to worry about a few trees.

Why isn't there an official way to make every creature in the Monster Manual a player race? Why are we stuck with humans, humans with ears/horns, little humans, big humans, multicolored humans, scaly humans, etc.? Why do you have to homebrew ubiquitous things like skeletons or bug people in 2017? Why are cringey catgirls an official race in lieu of anything better?

>Not wanting to be a Dwarf
>Playing an obvious 'wizard' race

You are disappointing me.

But yeah Fighter X/Wizard Y is probably the best way to go for the idea, whether or not Dwarf gives you armor proficiency because you going to want those few extra hitpoints, the heavy armor and the shield.

Might as well go Fighter 3 for action surge/heal. Maybe even Fighter 5/Wizard 15 for the extra attack action. I'm not really familiar with the rules of casting + attacking with multiple actions so I'd make sure before doing all of that. Worse case go Fighter 3 for battlemaster for a maneuver.

I wouldn't go into level 2 or 3 fighter until I was happy with where my wizard level was at. so like, Fighter 1/Wizard X until you are satisfied with a certain spell level then dump your next two levels into fighter for more benefits maybe?
>>
>>55178757

>Druids were originally champions of balance and Neutrality
Which lead to ridiculous situations, like druid helping a lost child to reunite with his family, but then burning down their house to balance it out.

Mage Armour & Shield

Enhance Ability
3/
Counterspell, Fireball, Haste

Even older editions only nominally supported levels past 10. Characters stopped gaining hit dice and improvement was overall much less significant than in the first 10 levels (except for Magic-Users, and that's when "caster supremacy" began being a thing), usually stopping dead at 17. Hell, B/X doesn't even have spells past 6th level. Making the higher levels more relevant was one of the 3e selling points and we all know how that turned out

New adventurers league surrogate characters thing has some incomplete info on PC grungs.

Size and ASI aren't specified. Walking speed is 25 ft.

SPEED. You have a climb speed of 25 ft.

AMPHIBIOUS. You can breathe air and water.

POISON IMMUNITY. You are immune to poison damage and the poisoned condition.

POISONOUS SKIN. Any creature that grapples you or otherwise comes into direct contact with your skin must succeed on a DC 12 Constitution saving throw or become poisoned for 1 minute. A poisoned creature no longer in direct contact with you can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success. You can also apply this poison to any piercing weapon as part of an attack with that weapon, though when you hit the poison reacts differently. The target must succeed on a DC 12 Constitution saving throw or take 2d4 poison damage. No additional effects apply.

STANDING LEAP. Your long jump is up to 25 feet and your high jump is up to 15 feet, with or without a running start.

WATER DEPENDENCY. If you fail to immerse yourself in water for at least 1 hour during a day, you suffer one level of exhaustion at the end of that day. You can only recover from this exhaustion through magic or by immersing yourself in water for at least 1 hour.
Discuss.

Going by the Rules Cyclopedia compendium of BECMI, Cleric/Druid spells cap at 6 but Magic-User spells reach the full nine.
>>
>>55180186
I'm going by B/X since it's mostly what people play nowadays. The other letters exist for people to scavenge ideas for their B/X games
>>
>>55180235
Yeah but B/X was kinda just designed as "entry-level" D&D and then you were supposed to move on to AD&D to enjoy the "meatier" stuff. So of course they were going to put a cap on it.

>>
>>55180406
It's not necessarily a good fit for 5e, but if you want to get into it, maybe you could cap things at 11th level and handle the rest via E6-style progression. I figure this would require pretty extensive homebrewing. Out of the top of my head, fighters would probably need a substantial buff to compensate for not getting their extra attack and therefore being eclipsed by paladins and barbarians in pure damage until the very last level

Attributes exist to compare differing entities within the relatively narrow context of attribute checks. Chasis does matter, as there is decidedly more to intelligence than +5% to History checks, yet this bonus to certain d20 rolls is all that INT amounts to as a game abstraction.
>>
>>55180577
-10% to History checks is not 'retardation', but being born with a nonmagical affliction (that might be modelled after some of those DMG insanity rules and can be cured with a restoration spell) probably is.
>>
What are the rules about becoming Eldritch Knight at Fighter 3? Is it just poof, you can now cast spells, or is there any prep work the new muscle wizard has to do?
>>
>>55180641
It is poof. Your constant and rigorous training is a background assumption, much like a wizard is assumed to constantly plunder the celestial spheres for his 2 spells per level.
>>
>>55180633
By that same logic, +5 to a history check isn't "genius", but it is. The actual modifier isn't important AT ALL. If you have 6 int, you are straight up retarded, no argument.

If you have 6 int, you're retarded. There's no debating this.
>>
>>55180682
INT in D&D doesn't represent the sum total of a character's brain. INT tells you that a tomato is a fruit, but there's other things about tomatoes that require other skills. Wisdom tells you tomatoes don't belong in fruit salads, Charisma tells you how to sell a tomato, and Dexterity means you know how to best throw a tomato and possess the physical means to do so.

Look at the skills associated with Intellect:
>Arcana: how much you know and understand magical trivia and lore
>History: how much you know about the world and its past
>Investigation: Critical thinking skills, logical deduction
>Nature: your knowledge of the natural world and its systems, encompassing both biology and the earth sciences
>Religion: your knowledge of deities, demigods, myths and legends

There are plenty of people who have trouble with all those skills and are not clinically retarded. Uneducated sure, which is why the well educated Wizards use Int while the living innawoods Barbarians don't.
>>
>>55180762

>>
>>55181687
No, not edgy.
It's actually a really good show, and very watchable even if anime isn't really your thing.

Basically, it's a grittier and harsher take on the "group or normies fall into a fantasy world that runs on RPG mechanics, become adventurers, and the tuff ones outpace the meeker ones, who struggle to make ends meet."
The story exclusively follows the weaker ones and how they try to go from being practically hobos to being real adventurers. It's a really great depiction of roughly the 1-5 level range or so.
Plus the party manages to have an antipaladin who is not an edgelord which was weird and fun.

There is no such shop.
I just want to play games and make friends, and I enjoy DMing. I don't ask my players to deal with any super autistic rule changes, and I write new worlds up to set the games in so that it's always fresh.
I don't know what to blame for this, I guess. I think I do a pretty good job as a DM, but I can't seem to find players who actually intend to keep a schedule.
>>
>>55181869
A Neutral Evil person wouldn't care if someone gets dicked over as long as they benefit.
A Neutral Good would go out of their way to make sure someone doesn't get dicked over.
A Neutral would try not to dick someone over up until the point where they're getting particularly annoying to deal with. AKA the "you don't fuck with me I don't fuck with you" ideology.

>What was the last town your party stopped at like, and how did you spend your time there?
The last town, whose name escapes me at the moment, was quite nice. I say "was", despite us still being there, due to the fact that since we arrived the mayor has been murdered, at least 32 zombies have been created and are wreaking havoc on the south side of town, two bastards in our group betrayed us, and two very powerful (I suspect 3 levels stronger than we currently are) magically gifted baddies interrogated the party as to the whereabouts of our healer and almost killed us. By the time our group leaves the town it will likely be under siege by the recently united orcish and goblinoid horde who, for reasons currently unknown, are working together despite their gods being very unlikely to do so.

I love my DM and can not wait to see how he unfolds the current mysteries that exist in the setting.

/5eg/ one of my players' characters has been cursed
Help me write a poetic/rhyming curse he'll hear in his dreams to signify exactly what will happen to him.

Pic related is an example of what I mean

For reference, he stole an old Silver/Platinum Ankh from an Egyptian-esque tomb and melted it down, selling its components and left the area. So there's no way he's undoing it.

Therefor, it needs to be something which has a prerequisite for getting rid of the curse which isn't just "RETURN THE SLAB!" or it needs to be a menial enough curse that it's okay if it stays on his character forever.
>>
How do you guys prefer to go about your session 1? In terms of planning, pacing, events, etc.

Our group is comfortable enough with each other, but intros are kinda always a little bit awkward. I'm not sure if I should plan on some proper adventuring or just checking out the local environs.
>>
So, I had an idea for an an initiative style that not only really changes up how the game is played, but doesn't require a new mechanic to be memorized.

It's basically is a dynamic form of initiative that's heavily inspired by the "popcorn initiative" from the Angry DM.

Here's how it goes:

1. Combat starts and everyone rolls initiative like normal (I sometimes group the initiative rolls for various mooks).

2. The person with the highest initiative roll acts first then picks the next character to perform an action. They can pick an ally or a foe.

3. The person they pick performs an action, picks who goes next, etc.

4. Whenever a character takes his action, a token is placed to indicate it (this becomes important).

Now here's where it gets interesting:

5. If a player or monster becomes engaged, BOTH characters can take an action at the same time.

For instance, If the paladin on his turn runs up to strike the goblin, the goblin may decide to dodge OR may also decide to attack. Both will roll to attack and roll damage and HP is subtracted from the goblin first (since it wasn't his initiative). If the goblin dies, his attack is ignored. If the goblin doesn't die, his attack counts (and either is successful or not) at the same time.

6. As mentioned before, both characters who acted would receive a token.

7. When you get to the last person, that person takes an action+/- movement and chooses any of the other combatants to start off the second round of combat.

First, this shit is fun as fuck. It's fast (because you have two characters acting at the same time). It's strategic (yeah, you could pick your friend to go next, but you want to avoid a monster going last otherwise he might pick his monster buddy to start off the next round). It's a little less of the "I hit you, now you hit me" dynamic since both rolls happen at the same time.
>>
>>55182027
Make the friends first and play games with them after. You are never gonna get randos to be your friend this way.
>>
>>55182328
I've playtested it a few times and it's fun as fuck.

It also gives players an opportunity to react to that terrifying creature running up on them, sometimes.

"The goblin chief runs at you, sword raised."
"I haven't used an action this round, so I'll dodge and try to run away." (Dodge and Disengage actions are the same, functionally in this system).

>What about metagaming?

It happens a little, yeah. But not any more than with the typical system.

>What about multiple enemies?
So, this one is sort of up to DM discretion. I rule that attacking an enemy who has already used his action counts as "flanking" (since he's clearly distracted with his foe) and so that attack gets the advantage. This does carry an important caveat though: if a PC that is capable of making multiple attacks rolls to attack both enemies, those enemies do NOT get the advantage. That PC is able to fight off two enemies at once! A third enemy (unless the PC could somehow make three attacks) would absolutely get the flanking bonus though.

What does /tg/ think?

It's not the item that was cursed, but the place. When he stole it, he angered the spirits. In order to remove the curse, he must make the site "whole" by adding something of equal value. However, because it was a crest of a royal emperor (or whatever the fuck) he must also pay tribute by giving up his own power in reverence.

IE, he must give back an attuned magic item of equal or greater value.

The curse? Malaise. Disadvantage on all CHA and CON saving throws, weakness to poison and disease, abilities which normally require a short rest now require a long rest.

"The deed is done, your fate is sealed, make us whole, and we shall yield. Until that day, there will be no rest."

Thatll fucking teach the pilferer.

How do I make remembering spells easier for more casual players? I'm dm'ing a game that includes my Dad, and since we only play every weekend or so, he's having trouble keeping track of his cleric spells. Would spell cards solve the problem?

I'm having a hard time picking a Wizard School. For those who play Wizards, what are your top picks?
>>
>>55183035
>S Tier
Divination: Luck manipulation is boarderline broken, especially when combined with the Lucky feat.

Abjuration: Being able to shut down enemy magic is insanely useful, and a rechargeable chunk of hitpoints (your ward) is great on a class with a D6 hit dice. Especially at low level. Reminder that Alarm is a Ritual and can be cast without spending slots to charge your ward.

>A Tier
Conjuration: Extra HP on your summons is nice, not having your concentration broken with summons is nice.

>B Tier
Illusion: Once "real" illusions comes online, it can be gamebreaking, but it's super dependent on DM-Fiat and interpretation.

>C Tier
Evocation: Avoiding friendly-fire on your allies is nice. Overchannel is nice too, but takes too long to come online. Overall you're probably better off with a sorcerer's meta-magic though if all you wana do is blast stuff.

>D Tier
Enchanting: You're not a Charisma-based caster and don't have access to Subtle-Spell.

Transmutation: Garbage, everything your Transmuter Stone does can be replicated with feats, spells, or common magical items.

>F Tier
Necromancy: It's nigh-unuseable in most settings due to be considered dark/evil magic. Even if necromancy IS useable in your campaign, the bonuses still suck. 10/10 times you're better off picking Conjuration instead.

Curse of Strahd spoiler

My party is dealing with the coffinmaker and its vampire spawns. Unfortunately for them they've awakened all of them. Fortunately for them, they've got a plan to get out with St Andral's remains, and set fire to the shop.

I'm not sure how to play this out. The building should burn quite fast considering what it contains and is made of, and the guards/Izek should probably come quite quick.
What else should I do ?

I got separated from the party in some mist a while ago, and was apparently 'wandering lost in it' for a while (read: missed a session).

On my return, I mysteriously re-found the party via DM fiat as you so often do. Everything was all fine and dandy until several hours later when we found an identical copy of my character locked unconscious in a closet of a witch's hut, who promptly tried to flee when awoken.

We captured it, and ended up dragging the imprisoned clone around for several days, before we had the bright idea of shoving the clone into a moonbeam.

...Yeah, turns out the "clone" was the original, and i'd been playing a brainwashed doppelganger for 3 sessions without realizing it. Revealed, the doppelganger nearly murdered Actual Me by pushing me back into the moonbeam, then gapped it out the cave we'd been resting in.

He was never seen again (that we know of), my character was extremely traumatized by the whole experience, and I now have trust issues with the DM.

Played a campaign without any powergamers. Didn't last, because the DM went (clinically) nuts. I played a gnome transmutation wizard and steered the DMPC (arcane fighter) in combat. Had a monk, ranger, minotaurbarb, and evil cleric.

My Gnomewiz enjoyed tinkering, and the campaign was built around the initial creation of the Warforged, and was very artificing/tinkering/clockwork-heavy. Had the group lasted, my goal was to expand on my tinkering and instill actual life into tiny clockwork creations. Transmutation orb was just to make up for my footspeed. If I ever overcame it myself, I would have handed it out like a buff to someone that needed elemental resistance, nightvision, whatever.

I had fun with it.

"While wearing spiked armor and are raging, you can use a bonus action to make one melee weapon attack with your armor spikes against a target within 5 feet of you. If the attack hits, the spikes deal 1d4 piercing damage, plus your Strength modifier."

So I got this idea from reddit, but what do you think of having silver be the standard currency, rather than gold?
Currently it's:
100 copper = 10 silver = 1 gold

And the problem is that gold feels mundane, you have to throw 1000s of gold in front of adventurers before they give a shit.

So the proposed changed would be:
10,000 copper = 100 silver = 1 gold
Copper is worth the same, silver replaces gold, and gold is moved up in value. This makes even just a bit of gold much more worth it to the party.

For example, with the silver standard Full Plate Armor would be 1,500 sp or 15 gp.
>>
>>55187218
Holy shit, I have this problem in my table and DO NOT DO IT, I SWEAR TO GOD THIS IS FUCKTARDED

First of all, a gold piece is already not a thing made of gold, it's at best, gold washed. So already this theory of yours does not hold

Aditionally, it makes everything in the world ass hard retarded for no reasons.
Think of the spells for material components, think of common costs, think of everything, and you'll find a common problem

Thinking. You'll add artificial bullshit to the game for the grand purpose of always converting shit in the back of your mind for the exact same thing anyway

Aditionally , the same way hit points aren't meat points, 1000 gp are already not literally a thousand coins of gold. They'll be gems, notes of credit and an assortment of items that will grand total for that which in the merchant vernacular is meant by "piece of gold"

Aint nobody carting aronud three wheelbarrows of cash to the king's doorstep in exchange for a castle nigga.

So why, oh why, oh why would anyone bother to add on this layer of complicated redardedingness in exchange for LITERALLY NOTHING

>>
>>55187970
I have, I know you aren't required to, but it is considered op to get those bonuses for all humanoids?
>>
>>55187917
I have never met a GM who allowed "Humanoids" as an option.

Of course, most GMs I have played with, have actively punished these kinds of "super munchkin" options, and rewarded less optimal choices. It is not uncommon to see a GM completely derail a campain to barely ever include humanoid enemies because of that choice. And then, when someone picks something like Gaints, they practically throws us into giant territory.

I kinda like it. Like SS/GWM never getting a magic weapon, but the Charger user getting a ton of things that helps this option shine. It discourages faggots from just going for the usual "best" options, and eventually makes people stop using online guides for their """optimal"""" builds.

There's nothing wrong with picking humanoids, it was changed to be that way so you didn't pick Orcs then get shafted when your DM never introduces Orcs into their game. It's a defining class trait it's supposed to be useful without you having to pry info out of the DAM at level 1
