Don't forget to complete the survey!

>>
How would you build a principled conservative in 5e?
>>
>>55071855
Person who has his moral and ethical codes which he follows as close as he can whilst not being overbearing on the rest of the party.

what kind of stupid question is this anon
>>
>>55071855
However the hell you want. That's more personality than it is build.
>>
How's the revised Kensei?
>>
>>55071892
Archer/10
>>
>>55071880
Yeah, but if you're gonna pump CHA you may as well have a class that benefits from it. Though with full casters (especially the War Cleric you were talking about), you've got a little more to play with from a point-buy perspective.
>>
So I'm building the closest thing that the local setting has to a major city and right now I'm working on business and street map.

It's a coastal/trade city, so right now I have a major dock and warehouses for merchant vessels, a smaller wharf and accompanying market for fishermen, a wealthy housing district and the accompanying businesses (jeweler, tailor, cobbler, butcher) a major woodworking and shipwright/repair district, and a main street with a fucktillion temples.

Scattered throughout I also have a whole bunch of taverns, inns, and brothels.

My question is: am I missing anything?
>>
Trying ot make a temple-chanter character for an upcoming game. Obviously I need to go Life Cleric / Lore Bard, but I don't know which class I should start with, and where I should dip. It's gonna be a 5th level game, GM says expect it to end around level 10.

Any advice on a proper progression?
>>
>>55071962
If it's a pretty major town it'll probably have some sort of town hall or leaders house.

You might like to add in a guard house, healer, school/university, even a library or general bookshop. An orphanage too perhaps.
>>
>>55071315
Become THE WALL?
I say, only playing with 14 CON
>>
Anyone have any PDFs from DM's Guild? I believe there was some in the old trove that got taken down.
>>
>>55072138
I would say start Cleric 2 for the better proficiency, then grab Bard 3 for your college. Cleric 3 doesn't really get anything interesting.

I'm not sure there is honestly any synergy between the two classes but that's what you want so I would just say pick one direction to go in and stick with it. You either get some low level bard stuff and a college or you get some low level cleric stuff and a channel divinity. You're not going to have your highest level spells either way.
>>
>>55072153
I knew I was forgetting something in my OP. I have a town hall, a few guards' barracks, and healers.

But I really like the rest of those! Library, that would have been a great idea. Can't believe I didn't think about it. School too, though it'd probably be either very basic education meant to lead into the trades or a highly specialized group. Maybe the former and combine it with the orphanage, I like it.

Thanks, anon!
>>
>>55072180
Grab the Shield Master feat and you'll (and your friends) deal tons of damage while enjoying dat dere nice AC
>>
>>55072289
But I was already going to pick up Fell Handed. Is there really much room for feats in a multiclass?
>>
>>55071817
How to make good stealth focused games? I want to do metal gear styled tactical espionage action
>>
>>55072375
Inform party ahead of time so that they can all be useful, prepare maps and information and shit because it usually pays off in stealth based scenarios, give players means of obtaining that information, make up your mind on how to rule stealth and keep it consistent. These are off the top of my head. Stealth scenarios are hard to run well in tabletop.
>>
>>55072358
Oh. If you're confident you'll get lots of advantage (like using the retarded flanking optional rule) then Fell Handed is more than enough.
>>
>>55072426
Now I want to try Mountain Dwarf trickery cleric with fell handed.

>>55072375
Try other system? Shadowrun is great for that kinda stuff.
>>
>>55072375
Ask yourself the exact same thing the players should ask themselves: what happens when (not if) they get caught? It's got to be something more than "you get in a normal fight" or else why not just kick in the door like a normal dungeon? But it's also got to be something less than a TPK because you can't just savescum like in a video game. They are going to fail a stealth roll and they'll do it sooner than you think.
>>
>>55072426
Familiars are uh...yeah. Pretty common in this.
>>
Should I dip a level of Draconic Sorcerer on my Lore Bard?

More armor and some more offensive spell sound like a good deal.
>>
>>55072812
A lore bard shouldn't lose their levels to get more damage, unless your group is severely lacking in that department. Even more, do you really want to be one of those guys who show up and say that they character had a hidden draconic bloodline all along, and now all of a sudden that power has emerged? Please don't. Use a feat if you really need to on better armor, after you get 20 charisma.
>>
Sharpshooter seems pretty powerful if you have a high dex to roll for your ranged weapons?

I get a +11 for my heavy crossbow, even if I take -5 off it it's still a +6 to hit, and then i'm adding +10 to my already +5 for a 1d10+15 =o
>>
>>55072891
Yeah, it is pretty powerful. Which is why McCree fighter with sharpshooter and crossbow expert is so devastating.
>>
>>55072880
Everyone has a hidden draconic bloodline.
>>
>>55072891
The main virtue of Sharpshooter is ignoring range penalties so that you can hit things from downtown. Outdoor battles become a breeze as you shoot everything from two football fields away, often killing them before they can reach you or the rest of the party.
>>
>>55072880
Multiclassing Lore Bard with another spellcaster allow him to pick up 4th level spell instead of 3rd when he get his first magical secret (and 6th level spell instead of 5th for the second one).

It's not that bad at all.
>>
>>55072920

>>
>>55072891
Unless their AC is truly abysmal and you can still hit them on a natural 2, the Sharpshooter penalty adds a flat 25% miss chance. That's significant enough that I don't usually do it. I've played enough XCOM 2 to know that a 70% chance of success is nowhere near as good as it sounds.

Some options are better than the others. Statistically. The fact that you try arguing with the numbers by screaming insults is telling.
>>
>>55072375
Do you mean Metal Gear as in the first half of 1 and the majority of 2&3 or do you mean the last half of 1? It's probably better to find something in between the two. Have some stealth sections broken up by bosses and combat. With as much stealth as there's going to be and as well as the number of players who might not want to play an entirely stealthy character, make stealth more like a puzzle rather than just a boring "roll stealth to sneak past this guy."

In terms of story, there's a good amount of potential here. Perhaps it's a group of mercenaries soldiers rebelling against a king for not waging enough wars and being too peaceful. There's a few ideas you could toy around with.

Once you get some of the ideas for stealth laid out, just find some character art and look for the more quirky/eye catching ones and make up unique personalities and fighting styles for them.

Need help with a room in a dungeon which is basically a disco. Multifaceted ball in the middle reflecting lights around the room, turning so that the lights move every round.
Except each light is enchanted with the following
1. Ottos irresistable dance
2. It forces you to sing, preventing you from using command words/spells
3. Gives you stage fright, causing you to jump out of the spotlight using your reaction
4. ???

One of my players asked me to master a Dark Sun game. I'm reading up on it to figure out if i like it.

Two things stood out as problematic.
Firstly, I've never been into psionics in D&D. Would removing psionic powers be a huge problem and take away too much of the feel of the setting?

Second, can 5E actually support the "survival" aspect as well as the others?

Finally, is there a decent DarkSun one-off?
>>
>>55073869
Yes?
>>
>>55073866
Aarakocra make great monks
>>
>>55074377
>Would removing psionic powers be a huge problem and take away too much of the feelof the setting?
Yes. Psionics is important because it's the settings dominant supernatural power. Arcane magic caused the destruction of the world, causing it to be taboo and not openly practiced, and the gods are all dead/silent, so divine magic is basically non-existent. Psionics exists to fill in that gap. You cannot have a "true" Dark Sun campaign without psionics without reworking the setting, and at that point why even run Dark Sun and just have a Dark Sun inspired post-apocalyptic setting that still has openly practice magic and gods and shit?
>>
>>55074377

>Can 5e support survival?

5e can't really support anything except combat and RP, because it's so dumbed down and rules lite compared to other editions.

You'd have to find hombrew tables and systems for most rules like crafting, hunger ect.
>>
>>55073732

it's flavour. something to make a weapon feel special. they're generally more powerful than the average weapon too.
>>
I love seeing people get salty when I say I'm reflavoring a class differently from how the books want it.

Your cleric doesn't believe in a god and instead got his powers from researching ancient civilisations?

Your warlock didn't make a pact and instead gets his powers through birth?
>>
>>55074707
Who cares
>>
>>55074579
There can be benefits, your sentient weapon might be smarter than you or be more perceptive and tell you things you would've missed yourself. You're basically taking an NPC with you, he can be useful or a deadweight.
>>
As a new DM, I'm really bad at ruling on players who approach combat laterally.

My party's rogue wanted to climb up the back of a Giant. He wanted to do this so that the closest nearby Giant would accidentally attack the Giant he was perched on top of.

How would you have guys ruled on this? I ended up just letting him do a standard climbing with a successful Acrobatics roll and then made his Action be to taunt the nearby Giant so that if they missed him, they'd hit the Giant that he was on top of.
>>
>>55074707
Why would anyone get salty at you for doing what PHB and DMG quite blatantly suggest? Godless clerics are a staple of D&D anyway, and if they were not, it is not like there is any RAW support for taking their fancy magic powers away as though they were paladins.
>>
>>55074816
An example: if rogue has more AC than giant, if the attack misses rogue but meets giant's AC - it hits giant. If rogue has less AC than giant: if the miss is by 1 or 2 (e.g. rogue has 15 AC, hit roll result is 14) the giant gets hit instead.
>>
>>55074823

I dunno why but people start frothing at the mouth when you play against the set flavor.

>>
>>55073732
>>55073696
This is an awesome idea, but you have to do it properly. Monk 5/moon druid X gets you a bunch of cool stuff that absolutely works with wild shape by RAW.

The only part where things get tricky is flurry of blows/martial arts, which according to multiple bits of sageadvice is something any creature can still do, but it's based on monk dice and not the natural weapon dice. Some people take umbridge at this, and in theory with extra attack you could do one of your attacks as a natural weapon with a kicker and then your second attack is unarmed strike + flurry which is pretty wacky but monks kind of suck so whatever.

At any rate, the main trick is what monk archtype to get. Open hand requires you to be able to flurry with bear headbuts or whatever, 4 elements and shadow may or may not count under "no casting spells during wild shape" (although you can still be a teleporting bear if you can somehow figure out how to get past the no darkvision in wild shape rule), kensei is obviously useless and long death requires you to be a psychopath in order to get an admittedly very useful temp hp boost on kills to be even more tanky.

Sun soul is the only one without any real stumbling blocks to making a build, but going only 5 levels deep means that you cap at 1d6 lasers, which is ok I guess but since this uses dex for some reason and not wis your animal of choice can seriously effect how useful this is.

But at the same time you can do wacky shit like turn into a spider, web someone up to the cieling with you and then powerbomb them into the ground while being yourself fine from slow fall, so its totally rad. And if worse comes to it and you feel like you're being too shitty just stop being a monk after 1-2 levels and be a moon druid with potentially better armor and some more speed
>>
>>55074707
Damn, I'm over here seething in anger at your refluffs but there's nothing I can do about it. Gosh darn it

Warlock 3 (go GOO so you can telepathiclly talk to people as a bear)/shadow monk 6/druid X is quite the meme, although I dunno if its at all playable outside of the inherent advantage hex gives flurry/mutliattack. take your bait somewhere else. a one handed weapon takes up one hand. a two handed weapon takes up two. if you have two hands, you can equip two one handed weapons or one two handed weapons.
>>
>>55075586
No shit, you know-it-all disgraceful cunt. I'm talking about how many weapons are available to have on my body, as opposed to a container. Like a dagger on my belt, a shortsword sheathed to the side, holding a warhammer with my hands, and a bow on my back. I want to know what counts as 'pulling out x weapon' to be used and what counts as being 'put away'.

You can only have your two hands ready with weapons at any one time. Whether that's a greatsword, two daggers, or a sword and shield is up to you.

You get one item interaction as a free action during your turn, which can be drawing or stowing a weapon. Any more than that and it can take your action. Page 190 PHB

For weapons, there's no such thing. It only matters when you attack with them.

If it has the two-handed property, you need two free hands for it. If it has the ammunition property, you need at least one free hand outside of the one you wield with it. Otherwise, it takes one hand.

Outside of that, you can carry however many you want and however many you have the strength to carry without going over your carrying capacity.

there's no specific ruling so it's up to dm fiat. there's so many place one can hide a weapon on their body that is readily available that there's no point in having a specific rule stating it. you can hide a dagger or a dart in your boot, strapped to your leg, in your pocket, strapped to your chest, under the brim of your hat, at your belt side, on a bandolier across your shoulder, and so on. thus one can assume that the amount of weapons you can readily carry is however much is less than your carrying capacity (which is your Strength score times 15, PHB page 176) by RAW, as long as you can convince the DM that it's reasonably easy to pull it out.

Natural weapons are not unarmed strikes, unarmed strikes have specific rules. You can make an unarmed strike as a wild shaped creature, and use unarmed strike rules, which allows you to use martial arts damage.

But that means you're not using the creatures natural attacks.
>>
I'm running SKT. My players have just finished the sequence where they encounter Iymrith in the Eye of the All-Father. The cleric communed with his god to ask if Iymrith actually died in the temple collapse and found out the dragon is alive. Now they're convinced that if they go to the Storm Giant stronghold, it'll spell certain doom for them. The story revolves around the players going to the Maelstrom following this encounter. They can go around fighting the other giant lords, but I'm not confident they'll ever feel "ready" to go to the Maelstrom since Iymrith is there.

What do you do if your players are scared off of continuing the main quest?
>>
>>55078337
Maybe I didn't make it clear

Martial arts says you can only use the bonus damage if you are using unarmed strike or a monk weapon. Natural weapons count as weapon attacks, so you can't use martial arts with them (but errata is that any being has unarmed strike, so a bear can still do martial arts damage)

HOWEVER, flurry of blows simply says "after an attack" and doesn't actually need you to be qualifying for martial arts damage to activate it (but since you didnt quality for the damage, you do the defualt unarmed strike damage and waste your time)

wild shape is in a very weird grey area where it's something that can do unarmed strike damage while "carrying" it's natural weapons that itself don't count as unarmed strike/monk, so it could be argued that you could bite and then flurry to get some martial arts hits.
>>
>>55076668
Someone actually made a martial .pdf awhile ago that is kind of like that, but I apparently don't have the pdf. Whoops.
>>
>>55078394
Have your players god to tell him to man the fuck up and do it. They are adventurers/heroes so what else are they good for?
>>
>>55078410
Realistically, a "Monk" weapon is any one-handed simple weapon or shortsword with which you are proficient. I think most natural weapons would qualify--it's not like it's game-breaking or anything anyway. A 1d4 or 1d6 damage set of claws will only be a change of damage type after a few levels anyway.
I'd allow it, but not in a wildshape, because that's not what it means by "Monkey Style"

>>
>>55078454

>>
>>55078410
Yes. Any creature can make an unarmed strike. An unarmed strike has specific rules and damage dice associated with it. A bear can make an unarmed strike, and it uses the unarmed strike rules and damage dice. This means that the bear can use the martial arts feature. It does NOT mean it can make a bite/claw attack (or any other attacks that are listed in the profile) and have them count as unarmed strikes. There's nothing stopping a bear from using martial arts dice, BUT, it has to make unarmed strikes - it CANNOT use attacks from its creature profile.

Flurry of Blows is different. You CAN make attacks from its creature profile, BUT by recollection, "multiattack" is not the same thing as "an attack action". So, you CANNOT use a bears bite/claw multiattack and trigger flurry of blows, but you COULD make a bite OR a claw attack, and then trigger flurry of blows to make unarmed attacks with the martial arts damage dice, since these are martial arts attacks.
>>

I'm also running SKT, just let them wander. I created some friendly NPCs that they've interacted with that can team up/guide them even though they have their own goals.
Example: I created a giant faction that's currently being led by a Cloud giant, high priest of Iallanis, and a Goliath, who is the descendent of the rightful ruler of Ostoria, Hartkiller. Their ultimate goal is to recreate Ostoria and unite all the giants together... But also probably destroy many of the cities in the north in order to achieve this.

sorry, what does going nova mean? I'm not seeing a spell called nova. Is it slang for avenging angel or something?
>>
>>55079017
Because of the way smite works, you declare using it after you hit, so when you score a crit you use your highest spell slot available and do insane amounts of damage.
>>
>>55078955
Yeah I believe it's under madness.
>>
>>55079017
A nova is a nickname for one turn where you spend as many of your expendable resources as possible, usually to do lots of damage. Like a fighter/paladin using Action Surge to make four attacks and smiting with each one that hits.

Madness I like, but I don't like the Sanity Score and I feel like you should be able to use stress like a resource. Basically pushing yourself but making yourself more "vulnerable" at the same time.

So players are trying to earn an audience with the Raven Queen, what challenges should I put them through? Was thinking 4.

I came across these four incidentally online, but they seem really odd. Anyone have any ideas about how I could further flesh these out? Just need to do some brainstorming.

1. Shadowthorns: Stand in shrubs for three turns.
2. Bathe in a cistern for 3 turns (heal yourself if you like)
3. Get the bloodcrystal raven skull from a hole in the ground over there. It's a magic item.
4. Get a book from that library over there. Hold it in your hands.

Necromancer/bard, teach your skeletons to play trumpet.

Here's a bit of world/campaign design I'm struggling with.

How should a GM handle really exotic planar conditions in 5e, since it's no longer Casters: Caster Edition and there isn't a magical fix for hard vacuum or the ground being magma and the air being 95% fire.

Should I invent some spell for this, or some kind of ritual? Maybe a magic item?
I'm not sure what the ideal way to handle this in a story sense is.
>>
>>55079241
Yeah I got that much.
I just meant some actual ideas as to what to do specifically fitting the theme of raven queen.
>>
>>55079256
It's not me it's my PC who kind of worships/reveres vecna. He's getting wrapped up in something bigger than he should because he wants everyone to have undeath.
Currently I'm thinking that the cult of Vecna will collect (or attempt to) myrkal's crown of horns and use it to try and corrupt a high ranking Kelemvor priest, creating a schism.

Erase all memory of a particular ancient kingdom from humanoid culture. Burn records, loot libraries, tear down monuments, and kill the last elf to have lived there.

The Raven Queen is a riff off the Morrigan who a triple goddess herself, and each one of those aspects has a different personality. Basically hippy Feather Queen, Tsundere black queen, and turbo bitch, get out of the way Red queen.

Each one of your challenges play into those three aspects, doing the most important thing God's ever do to man, which is totally teach a lesson and maybe inspire

magic equipment makes most sense to me, because it's an effect you generally want to be indefinite, not something that needs to be applied and reapplied (your players may or may not consider it fun to be on a time limit that instantly kills them when it runs out). you could turn obtaining that equipment into a plot hook in its own right.
>>
>>55079414
Because you had fun with it :)
>>
>>55078675
You know what, that's a good idea. It makes sense that Iymrith would see her plans as threatened and move for a coup in the Maelstrom, motivating the treasonous sisters to create storms.

Is there any information on storm giants actually creating storms? I know there's that storm giant variant from Volos that IS a storm, but that doesn't seem appropriate.
>>
>>55079397
Finish the fight, then confront the Fighter about him being a douchebag.
Tell him that you're on the same team, and that he doesn't have to like the Rogue to be a god-damned professional, and that if he wants his cut he's going to shape up.
When he objects, tell him "This is not a negotiation, you will be a team player or we will not have you."

Basically, google "how to deal with a problem employee"
Step 1 is "talk to them"
Step 2 is "reprimand or demote"
Step 3 is "fire them"

If you're putting your life on the line, you have no obligation to keep people around who might stab you in the back. That's not even a Paladin thing, that's just a not-being-a-dumbass thing. If he doesn't play ball as a character, send him away.
I mean, or smite him if you think he deserves it.
>>
>>55079286
Why is it so important that your players be able to survive hard vacuums and rivers of lava? Is that really desirable? All the planes I can think of already have large habitable areas in them, even the plane of fire.
>>
>>55079456
You don't need to explain it more than "They're STORM giants. They're known to travel with storms, and make them through their native magics."

My apologies but the point stands the girl can't do nothing and everyone should be able to sense it. This is partially all the chiefs are doing their own dangerous things.
>>
>>55079510
Then maybe take a hint from what already exists. Just have areas that the PCs can travel in as they are now rather than having to bullshit an immunity device that they will certainly use in ways you never intended. Don't try to tailor a suit without knowing what the parts of a suit are.
>>
>>55079456
I'm not even thinking of the sisters though them being further manipulated makes sense. The average storm giant would be down for this shit. It is Maug to kill a giant that is Maat and the King Hekaton and his wife were the definition of Maat storm giants.

Anyone else want UA for crafting rules that aren't total shit? I get the system would probably get abused by power gamers but it really makes no sense. 10 gp each day no matter what you're trying to do? Isn't an ink pen like 2 cp so you can make 5,000 pens each day? I'm obviously exaggerating but still. Feels like a part of the system they just didn't bother to do.
>>
>>55079872
Have you seen the Downtime UA? It has good crafting rules.

The only way to get all the details right lile that would be to have a giant table with the time to make every item a player might possibly want to make, along with production costs and the like, and that woukd be horseshit.

Skills are overrated. You can get through most dungeons without making a single skill check. Perception in particular is not worth going out of your way to get because everyone takes it.

Consider playing a Bard instead.

You key off your Trickery ability, you get expertise all the same, and just about every spell that matters you get as well.

I'm a bit mixed though, because then I can't make it like... THE Goron Tunic.
It'd have to be *A* Goron Tunic so the whole party can fit it.

>implying this isn't a stone sorcerer

>>55080960
That's a pretty solid idea, hmm.
I was also toying with the idea of making it an inherent component of the Plane Shift spell, like... when you jump over, you drag a little essence of home with you, and it starts dwindling. Eventually it'll run out unless you return home, but Plane Shift isn't an exact spell so you might undo your progress by returning. That could keep the planes hard-to-access and tense.

What do you guys think?
>>
>>55080984
I think he's smart enough not to take that path
>>
>>55074868

The reason they gave for Sorc is that they couldn't get the tuning right for the bonuses. If they were too high people cast their spell to early to maximize uptime and if they were too low they hung on to them too low for the class to function properly.

AFAIK they've never gone on record as to why they changed up Warlocks but I think it's pretty clear that early on they were planning to be pretty rigid about "casting = long rest, martial = short rest" but it didn't play out as intended so they softened it.
