Starfinder General /sfg/

What's your Icon like? You're not silly enough to make them a weak envoy or solarian, are you?

How much information do you prefer to have in a race primer for roleplaying? At what point is it autistic wankery that's not worth reading?

I suppose once we get to know who the cat-people of the Vesk empire are simply because all we know about them is they annoy the hell out of the Vesk because they won't fight them back.

>>55016861
I don't give a shit, I'll gladly use Envoy or Solarian but that said after reading through the the Mystic again I have this idea for an Akashic Mystic who has his own podcast where he talks about random shit he learns (more so when he gets his Akashic Palace) and sends out space youtube videos of various exercises and martial arts techniques he sends to subscribers.
>>
The possibilities of the starship creation make me hard but the rules for space combat make me concerned.
>>
>>55018138
Putting aside the DC, the idea of starship combat just doesn't sit well with me. I haven't looked into the rules in-depth yet but but it's so disconnected from everything else and I'd be concerned about what happens when players lose.
>>
>>55018228

So now that we're in space I feel there should be more stuff for Aberrants and outsiders.

I'm thinking something akin to the 3.5 Alienist but with some Bloodborne thrown into it as well. An example of the Connection ability I would give it (and yes I'd totally steal all of Bloodborne's shit for this)

How is Starfinder so much better at covering different sci-fi than Pathfinder is at fantasy even though sci-fi has such a broader range?
>>
>>55018690
Because Pathfinder was built more heavily off 3.5, which does a fuckawful job of portraying actual fantasy stories and how they work.

Starfinder got away from that more, and so is at least a little better off.

I remember an anon wanting to be a brain in a jar. I'm guessing that would mean the user's subtype would change to technological ( are androids technological subtype?) Good point. I wonder how you would handle the body though. Just give them the run of the augments list and let them have whatever is level appropriate? That said, I would say most forms of healing wouldn't work on them at least being 90% mechanical although I don't immediately recall iif there are any technomancer spells that can cure/fix machines.
>>
So uh, funny thing.

There's actually zero reason for anyone to take Weapon Specialization itself as an actual feat.

Because the only prerequisite for Versatile Specialization (Which is Weapon Spec for everything you're proficient in) is to be level 3 and have Weapon Specialization, and everyone gets Weapon Specialization in SOMETHING.

>>55018776
Actually, thinking on it, what I'd REALLY want is the ability to draw or stow as many weapons as you have hands in the same action. Dual Wielding is bad enough, can you imagine being a Kasatha trying to use Fusillade and spending four actions drawing all your fucking guns?
>>
>>55018804
You already have 4 pistols - kinetic, sonic, fire, cold should be enough to cover you.
>>
>>55018836
Fusilade empties your ammunition in exchange for being the fucking coolest for the round.
>>
>>55018836

Can you potentially hack a dead mechanic's exocortex and access the external memory by cracking their head open and directly inputting to it?

The Weapon Spec feat is probably there just to tell everyone what happens at level 3. Otherwise in each class you'd have to redefine it with a new name.
>>
>>55018228
It's complicated at first but once you realize it's essentially a whole part controlling character it's not too daunting. Feel fucking sorry for the GM, though.

System seems more for large ship on ship duels instead of group dogfights, though a single-seater starfighter has less variables to consider during it's turn.
>>
>>55019137
iirc you can buy plural smaller ships with your BP, but it's a terrible idea in general.
>>
>>55019137
The system works for large through huge NPC ship on NPC ship, to account for crew bonuses and the like.

Its primary point of failure is when PCs get involved.
>>
You know, I'm not sure the human racials are actually very good at all in Starfinder.
>>
It really irks me that there is no real reason to TWF outside of different damage types or having a reach/ranged weapon in your other hand.

What if the multi-weapon fighting feat reduced the penalty for full attacks by 1 for one-handed melee and reduces the penalty by 2 for operative weapons and small arms?
>>
>>55019168
Floating +2 sure beats having a -2 in something important for your class at least.
The inability to dump stat something else to help buy out of the hole is painful, at best you get a 16/14 split.
>>
>>55019203
A floating +2 doesn't matter when you can't exceed 18 anyway and pointbuy is 1:1.

If your race has a +2 to strength and -2 to int, you can just take 2 points from strength and put them in int. Boof.

Everyone has a floating +2 if you're using pointbuy.
>>
>>55018996
Maybe the males are just weaker.
>>
>>55019152
Not actually covered. Only "how to adjust CR" mentions multiple ships, but that's it.

There's also the problem of roles; a one-man craft apparently lacks the automation to let you properly use the ship at all; forget all the shit you can simultaneously do (and actual pilots, even non-combat ones, need to multi-task far more than this) at the touch of a button or hat-switch in Freespace, Wing Commander, TIE Fighter or even earlier settings like Falcon 4.0.
>>
>>55019215
Anon, the issue is you have two points wasted on a tertiary you don't care about and can't dump to get points back out of, having +2/-2 in stats you care about only evens out, resulting in a net literal nothing.

>>
>>55019168
Humans are shit.

>>55019203
You can use stat arrays instead of point buy to erase bad ractial stats.
>>
>>55019243
Yes, that's what I'm saying.

Every race, at least at this point in time, has a net positive of +2.

And because pointbuy is 1:1, that's all that matters.

It doesn't matter where those stats initially go, because you can shuffle them around as you please.

Take two points from a boosted score, add them to a penalized score, both are 10.

Take two points from your second boosted score, you've got two points to put wherever.

>>55019282
You can't dump stats as he was saying
>>
>>55019310
...

......

Well I'll be fuckled. Dumping stats is technically an optional rule.

What a world we live in.
>>
>>55019282
It doesn't work that way, anon. You cannot dump a stat to get points back in Starfinder.
Racial +2 in str means you have at least 12 str.
Didn't care about str? Points wasted entirely.
>>
>>55019317
The optional rule is that you can dump stats and gain nothing out of it but roleplay value by the way.

All ability scores start at 10, and then apply race and theme modifiers. At no point in this process can you take back points.

In other words, all, say, ysoki must have at least Dexterity 12 and Intelligence 12.
>>
So here's a question.

Does the Jet Dash feat double the distance you can jump via the Jump Jets drone mod?

I mean it is jumping.

>You get nothing back

In what world did someone decide 'We need an optional rule to let people shit their own stats down the toilet for no benefit' was a good idea? Or at all necessary? Or that anyone would ever fucking use it?

I'm glad the character I got doesn't actually change with this retarded discovery.
>>
>>55019282
You're focused on keeping a net zero. The issue is that if your race makes you put points in a stat you don't care about, you have a net -2, regardless of whether the other stats even out.

You essentially start out with a 12 point buy, but if you have to put 2 points in a worthless stat, you now have a 10 point buy.
>>
>>55019354
They probably wrote the optional "and you get nothing out of it" rule to stop the "hey can I just have 7 str so I can boost my wis?" questions before they began.
They knew no one would use it, but that was its point. It's just there to cock-block something else.

A single pilot fighter can make a single attack at a -2, which I'd imagine is meant to replicate the advantage of having a dedicated gunner? I dunno, it does mean a single pilot can't use their front guns and their rear mounted missile spam in the same turn.

While I'm not good a doing mathematical thought experiments, I'd imagine if you want your players taking on a single elite starfighter ace, you could have a equivalent tier tiny ship and use the BP you save on amenities necessary to support multiple occupants on fuck huge guns and super flight computer that dumps bonuses on you every check.

Alternatively, you could fluff it and say that the ship has it's own AI units that does the job of science officer and engineer.

I mean after all, doesn't every X-Wing have an on board R2 unit to do precisely that?
>>
>>55019394
I do know people that'll dump stats just for roleplaying, and otherwise it's a way to clarify the issue.
>>
>>55019231
Well, it can actually work. A ship can move half its speed and take a shot with a -2 by itself.

So I guess it's if the pilot is focusing more on flying or on shooting?

Can't be done, actually.
There's a hard limit on weapon mounts, especially on tiny ships (two per arc), and the mounts cannot be upgraded to larger models on tiny and small starships. Actually the only things you can spend your BPs on past a certain point are gonna be a bigger computer, bigger shields and stronger countermeasures (and armor but that'll kill your turning radius), within the limitations of the PCU. You also cannot do something like quad-link the guns or aim some side guns forward like on an x-wing, and the single weapon limitation on snap-shot would get in the way there too.

Additionally, your choice of one of the two minors means you can't, say, balance the shields and fly more than half your speed OR fire a single gun at -2.

Now what IS ambiguous is that it's POSSIBLE given starship computers also double as regular computers is that you COULD give it a control module.. that module does specifically mention starships, BUT what exactly is 10% of the device's cost and how many roles can it handle (if it can fully handle one it would be good enough)? I'd be willing to shell out the BPs for it but keep in mind it's not based on the computer's bonuses/nodes but literally 1/2 ship tier, so you're only getting that +30 on a tier 20 ship (+30 bonus won't balance shields on a tier 20 with that DC 55).

Goddamn mess, paizo.

Minor crew action can be taken once per round and only if nothing else was done in that role. So the ship can move half its speed by itself while you shoot OR take a shot with a single weapon at -2 if you pilot.

Apparently you can't just hold down the trigger with the throttle set to max that's too complicated.

you'd be surprised how many full casters assume - often rightly so, mind you - that resistance 20 will do the trick.

Honestly though EFS is one of those spells that's a lot more powerful in pathfinder than with the attack damage in starfinder. That thing shatters a lot more easily with the big hits.
>>
>>55020479
Barbarian's got it made, but the Zen Archer would have little to no interest in the new stuff because all his abilities are "bow only"
>>
>>55020490
>you'd be surprised how many full casters assume - often rightly so, mind you - that resistance 20 will do the trick.
Not against a 20th level SF PC. Every one adds their level to damage their classes give proficiency with. Then you are left with what ever damage the weapon deals. For a level 20 artillery laser that's 9d8. Possibly twice per round.

>>55020479
There are actually rules in the book for converting characters and it states that if you port PF classes they lose iterative attacks.
>>
>>55020490
Another more ridiculous assumption is the wizard doesn't take full advantage of his insane intellect (a level that a SF PC has no hope of achieving) and knowing how shit works and how to counter it before hand.

He will no doubt scry first, examine equipment and prepare beforehand. Lasers? Haha, how about I cast greater invisibility or vanish and be completely immune.

Also, EFS will block the laser since it doesn't bypass magical force.

>>55020546
I'm talking about wizards in PF.
It's true that in pathfinder, you're usually much happier with 20 resist everything than immunity to just one energy type. Gets you through most environments except basically total-immersion-in-lava, and lowers a lot of the damage enough to keep you alive.

That was also my point regarding the EFS: hardness 20 with 200HP is a hell of a wall against say 6 attacks in a round; effectively 320 hitpoints between you and whatever wants you gone.

But if you're doing 9d8+20, with possible penetration bonus too? Or worse yet a triple nuke turret because someone got pissed off?
>>
>>55020636

>What makes 6th level spells so terrible though?
Paizo didnt realize that the updated rules means a lot of "good" shit doesn't work anymore. Lets look at the list of 6th level spells.

>Battle junkbot
Not bad, not good either, it dies fast and you'll need at least 2 rounds to get it going or at least need some convenient junk right in front of you. Maybe you can ask a teammate to store junk and waste his actions retrieving and dropping it at the start of combat.

>Chain surge
Powerful but your initial target must have tech on him. Useless in the rare occurrence when you run into not!tyranids/not!zerg.

>Control gravity
Needs a will save now, everyone with flight can easily pass the test to avoid crashing. Anyone without flight at this level is a joke.

>Control undead
LOL

>Discharge, Greater
Decent but not amazing. Useful against martials but targets their strong save.

>Disintegrate
Was mediocre then, is mediocre now, Targets EAC which is now easy to raise. On top of its other issues in PF means you will need to win the lottery several times before you achieve effect. (actually hit, actually bypass SR, actually fail his fort save)

>Ethereal Jaunt
It was shit then, its shit now

>Flight 6
Party members should be expected to provide their own means of flight at this level. If they cant then you can easily spare Flight 3 on the handful that don't.

>Holographic image 6
PF Project image, Was good then, remains good now, probably a priority. Combo with quickened fog cloud for best results.

>Interplanetary teleport
You are a spontaneous caster now, chances are, your campaign won't need this or you will already have a plot device that does the same thing.

>Invisibility, mass
Shit, Forces the group to stay in formation. One fucker breaking the invisibility breaks it for all of you.

>Planar barrier
Useful only to NPCs

That seems rather... unlikely to function.
>>
>>55020878
(cont)
>Plane shift
No longer usable as a save or die. Campaign specific if your group is interested in actually travelling to different planes instead of planets.

>Resistant Armor, Greater
Mediocre, maybe use a lower spell slot for 5 less DR/resist

>Rewire flesh, mass
Questionable, Useful if your enemies rely on dex to dodge shit, otherwise why not use Slow instead?

>Shadow walk
Use teleport instead

>Shadowy fleet
Looks cool, retardedly shitty. only deals 6d6 damage, being shot at counts as interacting so they get to save every round. If you want to bluff about having starships then maybe use holographic image instead.

>Sympathetic vibration
Ridiculously shitty. Ignore hardness, 2d10 sonic damage vs inanimate objects, doesnt work on starships (wow!). Maybe use it on tanks? oh wait, 10 minute cast time. Only real use is to destroy unattended buildings or vehicles. You are at least a 16th level adventurer at this point. There are tons of ways you can blow up buildings.

>Terraform
Become Jesus, useless but the fluff sounds cool right? Oh wait, 30k C per casting per 100ft radius. Maybe use it on a very very very small planet?

>True seeing
Same as pf, Maybe use see invisibility instead? Then again, illusion magic seems to be the best school right now so it could be useful by comparison.

>Veil
Funny but not that great.

>Wall of steel
Its wall of stone but not stone. Useful, made better since there are few useful spells at this level. Wall of force might be just as good for combat purposes though
>>
need clarification for minor crew action:

Glide, how come a minor crew action lets you automatically add your Pilot Rank to your ship's AC when Pilot Action: Evade only adds +2 and that's if you pass the check

>>

Pilot action: evade means there's already someone in the pilot role giving their pilot rank to ship AC.
>>
>>55020957
It uses int+BAB so at level 16 you'd have 25~27 int depending on your personal upgrades that would be a +8 tops then +12 BAB to a total of +20 to hit. Light armor at tier 16 is +19 EAC before dex so yeah, you'd have a fucked up chance of hitting even if you were facing a mook. Its your best spell slot so people would assume you'd save it for bosses so imagine trying to hit a guy two to three levels higher than you who also uses cover, some sort of miss chance and probably SR. pronouns exist to simplify communication by allowing one to truncate a full identification into as basic and universal a reference as possible, so that you don't need to repeat Major-General John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt, Esquire six times a paragraph. If everything has its own pronoun, you've basically just started using names again.

Arguably a single universal neutral-singular pronoun to avoid the occasional confusion if referring to both a single and multiples through they would be a decent addition to the language, and 'hosts' would make good use of that. but that's about the extent of it. Most certainly communications would be severely hampered if six different species all had their different pronouns in every language.

Elementals still exist because the Planes still exist, but the rest of them? They're probably gone. Whatever caused the Gap had been sure to select which races made it off the planet and which had not.

THAT SAID, I think a planet of Syrinx philosophical bio-tyrants would be great.

Pretty sure elementals are still around, Golarion blowing up probably didn't kill the Elemental Planes. Lamashtu is still around, so she's probably rebirthed the gnoll race by now. I've heard it said there's a remarkable number in STEM fields, and because their interest is pretty niche, they pretty much have to pay for anything themselves if they want it. By living otherwise modest or even spartan lives, they can save a shitload of cash to spend on their "hobby" without really impacting their living situation. Kind of like wargamers, really. Except for the whole "boinking animal people" thing, but that's not mutually exclusive.
>>

Because their fetish is a large one. It can be leaked into just about any other fetish. Also more artist are probably willing to draw animal people because there are plenty of cartoons with them as opposed to others.

They're very much a feast/famine type of people, they cash a paycheck and spend maybe a tenth of it on food, half of it on rent/utilities, and the rest on porn.

Nope. Class features are a no-no.

I did some comparing of the weapons on differing tiers and they seem a bit weird.

For example, the autobeam artillery elite has 1 less median damage than the autobeam rifle elite. Is this because the artillery has more range?

Then you compare projectile weapons at tier 13, the automatic rifle has 8 less median damage than the heavy weapon despite the range disparity being the same as the previous example. The only difference being that the automatic rifle is analog, while the heavy weapon is not.

This game seems to be really off.

anyone else think that humans kinda suck in this game?
they cant dump a stat and get only a single +2
effectively they are down 4 stat points
other races have badass abilities too
like android vision and armor slot
lizard armor bonus
lashunta skills bonus

im pretty sure humans suck.

No one can stat dump in Starfinder, anon. If your not-Human race has a +2 going somewhere pointless it's lost forever.
Floating +2 means, as always, humans are the best fit for literally any class.
>>
>>55027912
They get an effective +1 for Intelligence, a free feat in a game where feats are more important than ever, and the floating +2 can be put into anything.

>every alien gets a -2 in something in exchange fro another +2.
Humans get a +2 that can go anywhere.
Ysoki, for example, get a +2 in Dex and Int.
If you didn't want to invest in both Dex and Int on your Ysoki, all you've done is gained a -2 to Str and possibly missed a +2 to your main stat if you didn't care about either.

It's much more difficult to play a class your race isn't statted for in SF than it is in PF because you can't dump scores to get those points refunded into soemthing useful.
>>
>>55027912
i think humans should get a gold bonus or something
>>

>>
>>55028086
Going with the classic Blitz spec, the human gets +2 Strength, bonus feat can mean Improved Initiative to Always Go First and climb all over those riflemen (with Step Up taken ASAP), alongside Weapon Focus.

Get the leg enhancements for speed as they become available to be Space Sonic. Nothing that wants to stay away will ever be able to do so.
>>
>>55027912
It doesnt help that low level feats are kind of shitty so chances are that you'll not find much of value other than improved init.

As a general rule in a high tech civilization, you're not going to need to have weapons instantly available because you'll be either prepped for a fight, or no one will be prepped for a fight. >>
>>55027544
No it's what people who read page 322 of the rule book and take it at it's most simple obvious means think. The sentence "Class features and items affect crew actions only if specifically noted in the class feature or item." seems pretty clear as many classes have a class feature that gives a skill bonus to skill often used in ship combat. But the developers had to quickly change it's meaning so that the highest level skill checks are even possible to make for even the most specialized of characters.

Ysoki and Android engineers focusing on ranged combat both have a slight advantage since the get a +2 to both Dex and Int. You can't always use race to dump for a beneficial stat but there are some specific combination that are more advantageous.
>>
>>55026373
Part of it is that it's sometimes disgustingly specific. Rule-34 turns out to have certain limits when it comes to purely imaginary entities.

>Easy one, let's take catgirls. One guy is basically just into anime and will ask for that kind of catgirl. Another one will want her to have six-breasts and be covered in fur. The third creep wants her covered in fur, but with just two massive human breasts, an obvious snout, a dick three times as big as yours, balls ten times as big as that, and he'll pay you three hundred if she's pregnant and wearing a comically-filled condom.

-Source: My ex wife draws some of this stuff smalltime at conventions and the like
>>
>>55028411
Well a human could get weapon focus and versatile weapon focus at level one, and with some few ways to boost attacks right now it's probably worth it. Especially with 3/4 classes get and additional +1 from it starting at level 9.
>>
>>55029745
You are made of bullshit.

Those are the ONLY class features that could possibly affect the starship rules in any fashion: Expert Rigs and higher state exactly what they can do for starships.

Now, if you want to know which one's ambiguous, it's the fucking item part. Because see... Personal Enhancement bonuses... Are items too. So by RAW that +6 dex which increases your bonus to piloting and gunnery by +3 each should not be applying...
