>>55031067
I don't fucking like it at all it would be one thing if they had a bunch of interesting weapons but they don't and it just follows the NUMBERS GET BIGGER rule that fills the whole fucking book and it almost removes any possible customization to weapons with it not like crafting was worth half a damn now anyway

>I don't fucking like it at all it would be one thing if they had a bunch of interesting weapons but they don't
but they do......

>No possible customization

What the fuck are weapon fusions then you goit?
>>
>>55031569
I agree with >>55031477, you're getting the illusion of choice with weapons. It should have been a modular system where you have one or two base weapons in each category that allow you to customize your weapon's damage type, firing shape, power level, etc. with upgrades and modules. You shouldn't have to repurchase your weapon every single time you level up.
>>
>>55031651
This guys has the point I'm trying to make
>>
>>55031651
This would have been so much better than what we got. It doesn't stop people from figuring out the exact optimal set of weapon characteristics, but it at least lets you determine your own fighting style and put your character's personality into his weapon.

oracle is probably my favorite class ever in any RPG. so much flavor and awesomeness.
ive always wanted to play a heaven mystery clouded vision double burden.

religion doesnt seem to be as big of a deal in starfinder, but it would still be cool. they could add new mysteries and burdens that are space themed.
>>

Verces has it all, the best skydocks in the system, a skyscraper filled city that's constantly in night time, and the brightzone is a desert/mad max type of environment where the lowest class of society scramble for survival. There's also mysterious ice monasteries in frozen lakes near the poles.
>>
>>55038893
They have synthetic parts that mimic organic organs, but unlike Replicants you don't need a fancy test to tell who is or is not an Android.
>>
>>55038844
Because the 3pp says so
>>
>>55038844
yeah I'd rather listen to the CRB than a shitty 3p book

"Ranged Attack Roll" = "Ranged Attack Roll" and not a d20 roll until Paizo clarifies it.

Obviously Starfarer was rushed out to fill the lack of content in the new system, now I know to stay away from that shit for my games.
>>
>>55038899
Because the CRB says so directly in plain text without any contradiction or implication otherwise.

If the rules as intended were not to use a ranged attack roll, it shouldn't directly state that you make a ranged attack roll. Otherwise, people are going to use their ranged attack roll, just as the book said.

>>55038952
>>55039016
I've never actually been angry while reading a 3pp rulebook. Starfarer's Companion is so bad.

I've seen a lot of issues about the core rulebook's spine and binding falling apart on their own, and I remember hearing such reports about previous paizo books. Is it fair to say that all of the core rulebooks will fall victim to this? Should I just return/refund mine now before it's too late?

I foolishly thought paizo would learn and not do this again.

Refund if you can. Hardcover quality aside, the book is filled with errors and you'd be better off waiting for a later print.

I just had another thought. On the issue of sexuality, what orientation is someone if their reproductive processes aren't binary? Like, maybe the assumption is that they're interested in both sexes that they aren't currently representing, but even that assumption doesn't make a lot of sense. Not to mention, it does nothing for the folks that don't fit into that neat little box.

That isn't even addressing how the hetero/homosexual dynamic needs to change when people's physical form becomes morphic. I've been saying for years now that if sexuality is based on who/what you're physically attracted to, it doesn't make sense to include references to your own sex/gender in that. I think some variation of andro/gynosexual makes more sense, but I'll admit, I don't really understand most people's sexuality. (Largely demi, so most folks just seem gross. Sorry.)

I wonder if Starfinder will just go the route of Eclipse Phase and declare universally that "people are into some weird stuff, yo. It's complicated."

(Edit: "Andro/Gyno" might be exclusionary toward non-binary folks. That wasn't my intent and if I've caused any offense, I apologize. I just mean that if a person's sex shifts, it doesn't make a lot of sense to me to say that all of a sudden, their sexuality has shifted. They likely are attracted to the same folks they always were. I'm just not sure how to divorce the notion of a person's sex from their sexual orientation in a way that doesn't exclude anyone.)

I do think there's an additional caveat to the serum of sex shift being as cheap and readily available as it is. With the future being what it is, and the, to quote Terry Pratchett, "black and white being too busy to beat up on green to hate one another," it's possible that issues of gender identity and sexuality have actually evolved in really interesting ways. Like, changing sex in most places might be like changing a haircut. Like, I fully anticipate infuriated blog posts on the infosphere akin to "my stupid sibling shifted and took my top without asking, which is soooo like them, grumble grumble" and all sorts of things. I wonder if, now that such technology is nearly trivial to obtain and use, if that itself is symptomatic of society treating the idea of gender fluidity as a given. The simple possibility of it is amazing for examining the inherent oddity of how restrictive we are with it now, as well as setting up many an interesting NPC and story-arc. Like, there's so much there. I'm super glad they put it in.

Meanwhile, one can still build off of contemporary issues with gender identity in the future, like a character who escaped some sort of archaic commune and spent up all they could scrounge to get that serum, both to get something they've always wanted and struggled for and as a physical manifestation of their newfound freedom. Or you could even examine characters with racially created sex-based castes this way. Like, I've got an idea rolling around of a CEO of a drow weapon manufacture corporation who has misgivings about selling weapons to criminals (a la Iron Man), and so when she leaves, she transitions to male because he no longer sees himself as the person he was before, and as a direct opposition to his formal role, not necessarily because of dimorphism.

>>55042617
Some people are obsessed with it because they've decided it's basically the only part of their identity/personality that matters. As such matters of sexuality are paramount because that's the magnifying glass they've chosen to view themselves through.

Others are obsessed with it because of a constant need to demonstrate just how cool and progressive they are. It's the outward face they NEED to show constantly to maintain their "open minded" persona. It's cultural currency for the circles they run in.

Most of us couldn't give less of a shit, for the most part because we're the norm, so we've never really had to think about being defined solely by the complex labels of sexuality or gender, nor are the circles we travel in overly concerned with attitudes toward these niche issues.

The "neat little box" might still accomodate non-binary species, if that's the standard for them. The Azad from The Player of Games (just read the thing you pleb command does not apply to non plebs who have by definition already read the thing) are trinary, and conservative enough to find your binary junk disgusting.

Of course, The Culture themselves (same book, see above command) are genetically and socially engineered to be non-binary, have no concept of "orientation" being a meaningful concept, and speak a language with no gendered pronouns. They don't care, so they don't need labels. It's only a society like ours right now where some people do care and some people think caring is wrong that gets anti-labels and new labels and impossibly complicated labels like you see online and not really anywhere else.
>>
>>55042805
Not him and I don't give a fuck about gender identity issues, but he's right. If you don't care, then don't care one way or the other. The people for or against the topic should argue over all of it, but for the rest of us, if we don't want to get involved then we should just get the fight happen.

This isn't like being caught in a crossfire, it's a battle happening overseas and I'd rather turn the channel than hear about whatever the fuck the injustice might be.

If 98% of people don't have an opinion, than the 2% who do have an opinion will be the movers and shakers of society.

Why was the Lashunta sexual dimorphism retconned? I imagine it's for two reasons:
1) It expands the pool of racial choices
2) They didn't want to be in the position of telling a player "you MUST be female to play a damaya or male for korasha" as you suggest. It's one thing when they're a NPC race, but quite another when they're a core race.

As for me, given that this is the first I've ever encountered Lashunta in a paizo product (I know they appeared elsewhere, but no DM has ever allowed them) it doesn't bother me one way or the other. Plus, in a setting where you can get a magic sex-change for the cost of a decent battery, worrying what gender something is or isn't is kinda low-key.

Maybe THAT's the secret! The Lashunta government has secretly subsidized the cost of sex-shift serums for all their citizens! :)
>>
>>55043062
>They didn't want to be in the position of telling a player "you MUST be female to play a damaya or male for korasha" as you suggest. It's one thing when they're a NPC race, but quite another when they're a core race.
That never really stopped them from genderlocking PrCs in pathfinder.
>>
>>55043083
You silly man, getting your baby diapers wet because you need to have a toy that's labeled "female-only." Just homebrew it, bro!
>>
>>55043062
It is not really retcon as expanded explanation
Now the real kicker in new Lashunta dimorphism is the new social stratification
It is clear that the korasha are now lower class citizens in lashunta society since they are dumber and better for menial tasks thanks to their strenght.
>>
>>55043083
That only works for female only classes. The other way would just be sexist.
>>
>>55043083
Those are late-production PrCs for a heavily-bloated system that's already on the way out. This is a core race for their sleek, inclusive, progressive new take on science-fiction.

Besides, who cares about something being female-only? You people never complained about that before, why complain now?
>>
>>55043162
>You people never complained about that before, why complain now?
Pure optimization autism is the only reason people are bothering to complain about the genderlocking of the Sanguine Angel. If it weren't the best way to make a STR-based combat character using the absolute best fighting style in the system, only /pol/ would have got their panties in a bunch over it.
>>
>>55009934
>What will your own setting be like?

Don't entirely know, though it'll incorporate the fantasy races as standard and probably not include the Starfinder races. If I'm going to D&D in space, then it's going to be D&D in space.

Also I may or may not convert Starfinder to 5e.
>>
>>55043062
Because they "care" about trans-rights. So they just got rid of something interesting, because interesting is work, and it might make some people uncomfortable.
They opted for a lazy safespace, rather working with what they had.

I don't really know, though. In my opinion, leaving the Lashunta as sexually dimorphic would have made for a far more engaging narrative. Even on the front of their social justice stuff, it would have given characters something to actually work with.
It's like making Erastil and egalitarian. If you do that, you can't flip the bird to the conservative grandpa when he tells you're doing it wrong.

Another one of my gripes is that, by making that change, the old Lashunta are changed from a cool alien culture, to being painted as backwards savages with an ickybad oppressive culture.

I'm not really a fan of this decision.
>>
>>55043224

>>
>>55043296
I've more or less converted completely to 5e at this point; I view other D&D stuff as resources to be used and mined extensively for ideas and inspiration. Besides which, supposedly the idea of Starfinder is to be "D&D in space", and one of the things D&D has going for it is the fact that it has a bunch of different settings, it's not locked into a single one.

Plus with regards to Starfinder's setting there are just some things I don't like - the Gap as a concept, for example. And I think the overall aesthetics lean a little too much towards sci-fi and not enough towards fantasy. While I don't want full-on Spelljamer, I think I'd just prefer to come up with my own setting that feels more fantastical in look and concepts. Luminiferous aether is a must, for starters; I might even just say "fuck it" and outright have air in space, Treasure Planet style.
>>
>>55043461
Which means the people who care are on the wrong side of history, if they are that easy to shoot down.

You know, I'm now curious to see the gender/ethnic line-up of characters in Starfinder so far. Might be worth an afternoon.
>>
>>55043123
Not necessarily. A more intelligent damaya understands that those menial laborers are the ones who keep the infrastructure that supports their society functioning, and also that the hardier and tougher korasha can manage things the more delicate damaya may not be able two. It takes both to maintain their society as a functioning whole. If it didn't, they wouldn't have evolved in this manner. Non-dimorphic races wouldn't understand this reasoning.
>>
>>55043688
There is still master-slave relationship no matter what.
>>
>>55043688
Factory workers and construction crews do the same thing in America, and we tend to turn our noses at those positions.

Paizo will literally never expand on the Korasha/Damaya dynamic because they never had an idea how to explore that in the first place.
>>
>>55033988
if they combined the Alchemist and Summoner, they could use DNA samplers and genetic engineering to create enhanced alien pets, stored in pocket dimensions and infused with magical energies.

>>

could be further combined with Cavalier skills to work in tandem with the creature as a mount and Witch skills to add modifications to its attacks/spells per day.
>>
>>55043703
>>55043785
That's your own bias speakign. It's difficult for humanss, who are largely hardwired to exceed and control their situations, to consider alternatives. It is entirely possible that the relationship is entirely symbiotic - that the damaya are literally unable to function effectively in any position the korashas take because of how their brains are made, as vice versa. They may have overcome it during their civilization, but the hardwiring might still be in place. A damaya would take serious offense that you suggest the korasha are slaves or anything but a valued and beloved members of a whole.

They might not even understand the concept of slavery when applied to their own race, and the damaya might actually serve the korasha. The korasha may speak for the whole of their society, and the damaya are just mouthpieces that other races see as being superior due to intellect.

Korasha: "This is what we would like" and the Damaya: All right, lets nail this down. Does this and this and this satisfy your desires?"
Korasha: "Why, yes, that would be perfect." Damaya: "Right, we will make it happen for you."

They would then put their keen intellects to the purpose of providing the korasha what they desire, and get it done through planning and diplomacy and trading.

You could have the entire relationship ass backwards because you don't consider the possibility that you're wrong.
>>
>>55043582

What about dragons in space ships?

What about a planet full of necromancers?

I genuinely don't know what I was expecting. Like, I heard some rumors that they were actually going to innovate, so maybe I thought they were going to at-least use the OGLd20 skeleton as a framework to make some original meat like M&M3 or SWSaga, maybe even a game that wasn't published under a 17 year old gaming licence. Whoever you heard these rumours from was an idiot. It was confirmed months before the release that the game was 3.X in space and built for compatibility with previous editions.

A lot of disappointed people weren't keeping up with demo information coming up because most of the system changes they found during release were covered long ago. The game is for people who want 3.X in space, and for the most part the product delivered just fine. It doesn't solve any problems inherent to the system but the game runs much better than any previous take of 3rd edition.

Androids don't even conform to gender constructs or the binary, imagine how fascinating it might be to make an asexual character (just like the Iconic Operative) who seamlessly shifts between the sexes like a Changeling using Serums of Gender Change or Appearance Change.

Or perhaps there might be communities in the Vast that encourage their children to use the Serums from an early age, just so they can appreciate gender in all it's forms! Truly, they would be blessed by Weydan and Arshea, two deities who explicitly condone such behavior.

Hey, I'm talking about the setting. Canon stuff, too!
>>
I'm currently going through the CRB and Dead Suns to see how many white people there are, and compare it to how often they're portrayed as evil.

Should I include androids or Lashunta with caucasian features?
>>
>>55047803
Lashunta are a matriarchal society, ergo cannot be evil.
>>
>>55047803
Alright, these results are assuming we want to count Androids or Lashunta clearly modeled after white people, while those with distinct negroid or asiatic features were counted as "colored." I did not include the Iconics.

White Men (includes Androids, Background Enemies, and Lashunta)
>22

Colored Men
>7

White Women (includes Androids and Lashunta)
>14

Colored Women
>11

The only trend I had noticed throughout the CRB and Dead Suns was that 100% of the enemies featured in the artwork were white men. All of them.
>>
>>55047906
>drow
>>
>>55047997
Drow are no longer explicitly matriarchal, they excluded any mention of that in their mention.
>>
>>55048014
they still hold slaves, that much is the same. they are still evil too
>>
>>55047803
>I'm currently going through the CRB and Dead Suns to see how many white people there are, and compare it to how often they're portrayed as evil.

Why?
>>
>>55047707
Oh anon, I know you're really just looking to get people mad, but you're missing the real possibilities! You're making the mistake of treating people like people! Just imagine; you could have a culture in which everyone is required to spend their most fertile years as women to maximize the population growth. You can't let them do anything risky, of course, because you need as many children as possible to keep your population up, so you've got to make sure they're kept away from anything dangerous or violent. Once they're getting less fertile, though? Have everyone turn into men for that extra muscle mass and then go fertilize all the women in the younger generation. And once they're getting just a little too old for that, you pack all your men off and send them off world to expand your glorious, ever expanding empire. You've got the population growth to handle it, and you should have the automation too!

The most powerful are exempt, of course. Mandatory breeding is for the masses, not the elite. They can still do whatever they want. In fact, maybe they're the ones doing most of the fathering - that lets you ship all the infertile former-wombs off world even sooner, because you've got the elite masters taking care of fertilization for you.

Wouldn't that be an interesting way of using those serums.
>>
>>55048095
Laying to rest the oft-expressed view that the game doesn't have white people, and the only white people are evil.

So by your numbers you agree that the game has too many white people.
>>
>>55048183
About 9 of the white men are explicitly mooks you gun down.
>>
Replacing all the white mooks in the Absalom Station gangs w/ a variety of multi-skinned humans

because gangs in the setting should be all-inclusive, I'll even add a handicapped gang member and a senior citizen gang member.
>>
>>55048383
So you want to kill colored people and the handicapped to further your own worldview of the white patriarchy.... thnx for telling us that.

The basics for them are in First Contact, the FRPGDay folio.
>>

That's the thing, the Serum of Gender Change simply turns you into a female (or male) version of yourself.

>Weydan and Arshea, two deities who explicitly condone such behavior.
This true?

I mean it's one foot in crazy to let kids swap genders if they're curious, it's jumping straight in to make it mandatory, and it's drowning yourself to have good aligned deities condone taking away their free will and choice like that. But since the guy I'm replying to seems to be baiting, I don't know how much of what he says is true or exaggeration.
>>
>>55045455
Eight if you go middle-out
>>
>>55048842
Not sure about Arshea but Weydan's stance would be "If the kid wants to try it then yeah sure let them have at it but if not that fine too, their choice after all." He would despise it if it were forced.

That sounds fine then. I mean, I don't really agree that kids are mature enough to do that, but it's not something that puts me off the setting like the god encouraging or supporting people forcing it on kids.
>>
>>55048972
That depends on the lifespan of the thing evolving. Some fast breeding species are evolving much faster than we do.
>>
>>55047608
>How are you people going to use the Serum of Gender Change?
I won't

It'll exist but my players won't use it because they don't give a shit and the NPCs won't use it because I don't give a shit either
>>
>>55049104
Well yeah, my point is that freaking out over calling starfinder an "evolution" because it's an overstatement is, itself, an overstatement.
>>
>>55049185
Also anon didn't say it was actually an evolution, just closer to the evolution than revolution (which is true of fine-tuning vs. wring a new game).
>>
>>55049104
>Some fast breeding species are evolving much faster than we do.

Aren't some species so malleable that incest doesn't actually hurt it? I think rabbits are that way, a brother and sister rabbit can produce healthy kittens no problem.
>>
>>55049229
It's not that they're malleable, it's about how many genetic diseases are endemic in their population. Humans went through a massive bottleneck in our history so we're nasty with them, which is why incest is even a relevant concern for us. But even for humans, one generation of incest is pretty harmless. It's only after repeated generations of incest that things become a problem for most.
>>
>>55049229
if a brother and sister rabbit are producing kittens something is very fucking wrong
>>

>>
>>55049878
They're an allegory for transsexualism, but they're not actually transsexual. A boy Lashunta can become a tall, slender hottie or a short, burly hunk. That's the extent of their "hormone therapy."
>>
>>55049898
>A boy Lashunta can become a tall, slender hottie
With a penis.
>>
>>55049829
Everyone has different tastes but it's probably just a fact that lashunta universally have traditionally attractive proportions, good symmetry, and a healthy appearance. Like, I might not find a girl personally attractive but I can look at someone with nice hair and skin and know that she's pretty.

Kender are totally different because the facts we have on them contradicts the idea that they should be loved. You don't have to find lashunta attractive yourself, but they meet what the setting considers a standard of beauty and there's no reason for us to think otherwise.
>>
>>55049907
A feminine penis!

Still a penis. Thus a boy, thus not something I'd find attractive. Which is my problem with the fiated 'everyone thinks they're hot!' thing.
