"Fuck Chechnya, Apparently" Edition

For all your questions on Dark Heresy (1st and 2nd Editions), Rogue Trader, Deathwatch, Black Crusade, and Only War.
Not the wargame, not Chapter Master, not Space Hulk. Inquisitor is okay, but not many people know about it.

Not sure between starting Dark Heresy 1e and 2e? Pick 2e.

>Who's making the new 40k RPGs?
http://www.ulisses-us.com/in-development-wrath-glory-for-warhammer-40000-roleplay/
Ulisses-Spiel, very well known in Germany. It's set post Gathering Storm, uses a Shadowrun-esque D6 dice pool, and is a unified line with Marines, Humans, and Xenos all playable in the core book.

Book Repositories (If you're planning to download any Rogue Trader materials, read the .txt file in the RT directory)
https://mega.nz/#F!Pl0UgbJa!vDtTXMKnvZ26fUbuw4X9tg

There is a new Homebrew Megafolder option in above MEGA directory containing several things.

40K RPG tools, a site that contains stats or references for almost all weapons, armor and NPCs/adversaries. Not updated past DH2 core.
http://www.40krpgtools.com/

40k RPG Combined Armory (v6.48.161023), containing every piece of gear in all five lines. Now includes all DH2e books.

The Good, the Bad, and the Alpha Legion (v1.0.0) (Total Conversion Deathwatch into the Horus Heresy)

Mars Needs Women! (v1.2.15) (Mechanicus Skitarii and Taghmata for Only War)

Fear and Loathing in the Eastern Fringe (V1.6.4) (Playable Xenos for Rogue Trader)

The Fringe is Yours! (v1.8.13) (More Xenos, Knights, and Horus Heresy gear for Rogue Trader)

If Calixis, Koronus, and all the OG settlements were officially killed off in WanG, how would your groups and players handle the end?
>>
>>55014763

We would have done all we could. At that point we go quietly into the night, calmly watching the end roll in.
>>
>>55014763
Ignore. Keep playing what you like. Transfer to WanG only if you want to.

In character, they'd be long dead since its like 300 years until the Scary Warp Thingy happens.
>>
>>55014727
What, like map assets?

>>55014763
>If Calixis, Koronus, and all the OG settlements were officially killed off in WanG, how would your groups and players handle the end?
The lead designer basically said, yeah, we're not doing custom sectors this time around. We're basically making a BROAD AND INCLUSIVE RULEBOOK that is a bunch of rules you can then set fluff around, and some pre-set "trilogies" AKA campaigns AKA games that will take the place of what Dark Heresy, Only War, Rogue Trader et al were.
>>
As a reminder, if anyone wants to play Only War, recruitment for Solaris: Binary Soul, my Only war game, is now open. Everything you need to know is in the Call to Players here. Looking forward to see your applications. I can answer questions as well if needed. Make sure you pay attention to the details! I would hate to disqualify people again because they forgot one of the things I asked for in the email. The window closes Friday at 11:59 PM EST, so you have three days left to apply now.

>>55015101

Ah, don't forget fighting Mortarion as a boss battle and playing an Eldar during the 30k Fall.
>>
>>55015233
I have 0 problems with dueling Mortarion, since you're supposed to be able to play as Space Marines or Grey Knights with the core rulebook.

Preferably not something so obviously aligned to Chaos. He's going to be a Heretek, but not a Chaos aligned one. One idea I've got is implanting a Force Weapon into his arm and getting that power from BC that lets you basically enchant your weapon with various special qualities.
>>
>>55015427
Why not make your arm a force weapon?
>>
>>55014763
>Ulisses-Spiel
For the gods’ sake, their name is Ulisses Spiele.
>>
>>55015460
Because then I won't be able to hold other things. Making an entire bionic arm out of psycho-reactive material would also take way too much material of an already super rare substance.
>>
>>55015660
But then you can't be disarmed of it and you can grab a power sword by the blade while it's power field is active.
>>
>>55015611
It's hyphenated in the native German.
>>
If I'm playing a character in Only War and they say that character's homeworld starts with a talent but that talent normally requires a pre-requisite, do I need to purchase that pre-requisite to have that talent?
>>

No.
>>
So. After my Only War campaign, i'm gonna run black crusade. Two (and a half) questions re: Black Crusade

How do i keep the party from killing each other and actually accomplish their goal?

How do i keep the mood light all things considered? (Could really use some reference in this question, what movies, shows, comics, games, etc should i show my players to get the mood through their thick skulls?)
>>
>>55015868
According to their website (http://www.ulisses-spiele.de/ulisses-spiele/) their full name is “Ulisses Medien & Spiel Distribution GmbH“ but they also give “Ulisses Spiele” as an abbreviation.
Though German grammar would require the use of a hyphen, there seems to be consensus that trademarks, corporation names et c. are exempt from this rule (when they're not further compounded (eg. “Ulisses-Spiele-Webseite” which translates to “Ulisses Spiele website”)).
So in German, the company's name is usually not hyphenated.
However, as we are speaking English we should just use “Ulisses Spiele”(without the quotes) in the same way one would use “Coca Cola”.

I initially wrote my post because people kept dropping the final “e” and I didn't mind the hyphenization, but here we are.
t. a German who cares about Grammar
>>
>>55017802
Compacts and I think something in the GM screen PDF has something for that near the back.

>Mood light
>Black Crusade
Explain further, I'm not quite sure what you're asking.
>>
>>55017851
How do i keep the game from becoming total grimdark of which there is only depression and misery?

Whats some good material for me to reference for a tone. The closest thing i can think of is Overlord (the games not the anime)
>>
>>55017925
Heavy metal album covers are a nice inspiration for some special combat scenes.

There are pockets of relative normality on some planets ruled by Chaos. Markets, factories, people beating the shit out of each other in the streets for the blood god, etc. What would be jarring for you would be everyday life for people living there and how it is just business as usual.

Go though the core and splat books and read up on the societies of the various planets in the screaming vortex.
>>
>>55018085
Ok i can get the setting down easy. What i need is, how do i make this a lighter tone without making it Saturday Morning Cartoon villains?
>>
>>55018125
Like life in the Imperium, but more spikes and heresy.
>>
>>55017925
>>55018125
In a way, Black Crusade is the least grimdark of all the games, as everyone involved in the utter misery and horror inflicted upon the world therein in already either used to, or enjoys it.
>>
>>55017802
>How do i keep the party from killing each other and actually accomplish their goal?
Compacts, page 269. Emphasize to them during character creation that their characters are coming together because, whether they like it or not, they all have the same level of expertise in their chosen specialties (choose whether you want your party to be core/splat archetypes and humans/CSM, do not mix them) and NEED eachother to get the job done. The retards who would kill the rest of the party on sight and/or are so powerful they could solo the objective (have them take a look at the example infamy scores on page 307 and keep it in mind when making backstories as well, even core humans start by default with reputations on par with minor warlords) would either not be invited in the first place or do exactly that.

>How do i keep the mood light all things considered?
Your players are the Imperium's enemies so feel free to play up how comically evil they are for all it's worth, just like the setting itself used to. Some ideas off the top of my head:

>Memri TV expy serving as Imperial propaganda
>People being sent to penal worlds for filing their taxes wrong (the ones who don't do them at all get shot)
>Hilariously two-faced officials (a preacher who gives fiery sermons against greed before going home to the definition of opulence, a planetary governor who issues uplifting speeches during a world-wide famine on the spiritual rewards gained through worldly struggle while he himself is busy gorging on foreign delicacies) who are easily corrupted
>>
any open play by post games?
>>
>>55017819
>in the same way one would use “Coca Cola
But I always hyphenate Coca-Cola when I write about them because they have a hyphen on their product labels.
>>
My Dark Heresy character survived a brutal campaign full of daemons, heretical inquisitors and fukken xenos and retired with his limbs and sanity mostly intact. Feels good.

I'm still hyped. I disagree with some of the choices, like daemon primarchs statted and the theme park splatbook ideas, But as long as it's not forcing me to use those things, and I don't know how they would, then it's not necessarily bad. I can't wait to see how it comes out because worst case scenario, I still have the FFG systems.

On average, how many regiments come from worlds that are not fortress worlds?
>>
>>55025111
Depends on surplus population and just how easy it is logistically to arm them.

I'd imagine Hive worlds shit regiments out the bucketload, because they both have an endless supply of fresh bodies and the industrial capacity to produce the low-grade gear an average guardsmen requires
>>
>>55025252
I guess that makes sense. I had it in my head that non fortress worlds only produce 2 or 3 regiments at max, but couldn't find anything solid.
>>
Are Feudal Worlds only like medieval settings with some sci-fi elements, or can they go up to the Napoleonic Wars era in technology and societal evolution?
>>
>>55025252
>>55025510
Also depends on what else goes on the tithe. For a hive world, the majority of the tithe will probably be in the form of guardsmen and equipment for them. For forgeworld, the tithe will be in the form of spaceships, tanks and so on, and they will produce few regiments of guardsmen. For an agriworld likewise, the majority of the tithe will probably be agricultural products going to feed a hiveworld, and they'll be required to produce only few guardsmen as a result.
>>
>>55015233

I have so many concepts, in at an honest loss over which is my favorite
>>
>>55025510
There's no way hive worlds only produce 2 or 3 regiments. Manpower is literally all some hive worlds are good for. And then there are cases like the planet in the Shadowsword book where due to a nearby war or crusade, a planet is tithed for new regiments so often they no longer have anyone to give.
>>
>>55025600
I think it's pre-industrial
>>
>>55025723
Yeah but the Industrial Age doesn't kick off until the 1850s.
>>
>>55025510
>>55025609
Indeed.

While Fortress Worlds do regularly shit out regiments, one would think that most Imperial Worlds would start doing that as well, depending on how close the enemy is or how bad the fighting has gotten.

So what do civilians do in there spare time after work in 40k? Do they have dvds? Can they watch movies?

And if they can do the planets make their own movies with local actors that are famous planet wide or does the Imperium have some planet or sector version of Hollywood that works tirelessly to ensure the work ragged masses of the Imperium are entertained after their 12 hour shift at the local Foundry?

And if planet Hollywood made the movies would they all have to be Propaganda movies? Or would there also be love story's and stories about overcoming adversary and serving the Emperor or would it all be Just Imperium mandated propaganda?

And if it is Imperium mandated propaganda does that mean its ran by its own department? Would they have their own adepts where they take children from a young age to turn them into the galaxy's most charismatic entertainers? And what would they be called the Adeptus hospitium?

Re-read the pdf, noticed a fuckton of spelling and grammar errors I thought I corrected. Hurray. Here's v 1.0.1, hopefully with all those errors corrected. No new content, but existing content should be more readable. Also, megaguy, feel free to add this to the homebrew folder. Anyway;

The Karybdis Abyss is a setting supplement for my homebrew region of wilderness space in the pimply, blackened ass end of the Eastern Fringe right on the edges of the intergalactic void. It's a place filled with all kinds of pirates, brigands, Void-Whalers, space monsters and space princesses that need rescuing by dashing swashbuckling heroes. Shit's pretty pulp adventure.

Includes:
-Fluff on local Rogue Trader dynasties & Power groups
-Historical timeline
-Buttload of worlds
-Local equipment
-New Starship hulls
-Literal Space Dragons

Hope you enjoy it /40krpg/.

No. I may make an offhand comment about how "one person forgot something," but I won't go into or name specifics. If the person realizes who they are, they'll just have to carry that weight. So try to make sure you read everything carefully - there's no rush. Better to do things right, and make a character you'll enjoy rather than rush things out and fuck up.

Usually, everyone likes to play Mechanicum characters, because they are coddled with great gear, talents, and combat / survival ability. Crimson Guard are a meme class that look good on paper (and admittedly are fairly good at earlier ranks) but even out later in the game.

>>55028085

I am not going to go into specifics on what characters everyone is applying with, or how many, but I will say that every single person applying so far has submitted at least one medic.

I would call it bizarre, but they do have a great aptitude spread, so I can see where people are coming from.

Techpriests are absurdly powerful in every game

Help me out for a sec, lads

I've dropped a plot hook on my Rogue Trader party's heads. An Eldar artifact called the Eye of Koronus that belonged to the Rogue Trader's granpappy, and the grand treasure hunt that should lead to it... But I want it to be more than just the initial idea, a best quality Eldar Warp map. How could I spice it up? What could it do?
>>
>>55038619
Also, for some elaboration on how fanciful it is, the Eye of Koronus is said to be cursed (in fact, there is a good amount of evidence that is): whoever holds it is stalked by the legendary White Kraken, a Void Kraken made of gleaming white crystal (or is it an ancient Eldar construct made to look like one?), which seeks to hunt down whoever possesses the artifact and destroy them whole with their ship. Unsurprisingly, this is the fate that befell ol' granpappy RT too, except spiced up with some betrayal by an old friend.

Sure, they probably have a ton of movies about space marines doing space marine things.

In Guy Haley's book Baneblade, they are short passages about the planet Paragon, and in the capital city they have bars, brothels, parks, etc...

>Sure, they probably have a ton of movies about space marines doing space marine things.
I'd love to see an Imperial movie about space marines because you know it's going to wrapped up in a layer of religious interpretation. Like a move about the Second War for Armageddon portraying the Blood Angels as actually glowing, white-winged Angels and the Salamanders literal walking armored lizards that breathe fire. Each chapter of the angels of death look different suiting the reputation of their chapter and the type of wrath they bring upon the Emperor's enemies.

It's actually a relic of the Old Ones and gives off a strong warp signature, hence why it attracts void krakens. Prolonged contact with it can cause mutation, but that's only a side effect of the warp energy it emits.

If used to make a chart of realspace, it can create a time-locked chart, showing the positions and states of stars, planets, moons, and other orbiting bodies at various points in time. Including the future.

Imperials have all sorts of entertainment I'm sure. Hive cities aren't too far off modern earth, while planets with lower tech levels probably have lots of story-telling and live plays. Most of the content, while not 100% propaganda, will likely have a strong moral component. You might have somewhat lascivious crime films, but they always end with the evil-doers getting their just desserts, while those who stick to the straight-and-narrow are rewarded with the everlasting love of the Emperor.
Strip clubs, brothels, dance halls, and various blood sports are popular in the nasty parts of the Imperium, but physical sports of all kinds are probably very popular too. I doubt there's much in the way of video gaming, though I like to think the Tech Priests sometimes solve their disputes using an ancient cogitator program commonly called "The Trial of the Monoliths" but known in some obscure records as "PONG."
Also, if medieval europe is anything to go by there are a TON of holidays. Saint's festivals, celebrations of important events, days of reflection, etc. While the ecclesiarchy tends to be stern and moralizing, they probably do have a lot of grand pageants and celebrations showing off their material power, and maybe big reenactments of certain battles.

My character has Intelligence of 62 and Infused Knowledge talent. Would it be poor taste to get a good quality Cerebral Implants? It would give me Unnatural Intelligence (2) and +20 to logic and lore tests.

This would mean that I would have a 82% chance to pass a challenging common and scholastic lore tests with 3 DoS and forbidden lore with 2 DoS. I'm conflicted because I don't know it this would be a too cheesy thing to do

Taking a Sergeant / Priest, buying nothing but the Munitorum influence talent until it becomes no longer xp-feasible (usually you can get the talent 6-8 times before the skyrocketing price is unaffordable, for a +30 to +40 boost to Logistics Score), then suiciding the character. The new character can spend all that XP on actual combat talents, the team gets an inflated Logistics score since it persists after the character dies, and the GM realizes the first character was purely a sacrificial lamb to boost logistic score.

1E
>Large numbers of skills which can be hard to work into your campaign so the players don't feel like they're wasting their XP
>Auto-fire is clearly the best option unless you use the errata, then accurate weapons can out-damage them
>Psychic powers are huge-risk low-reward until you progress a few ranks into your career
>Careers (think classes from D&D) are very rigidly-structured and, unless you use other books, will eventually get pidgeon-holed into a very specific role
>most of the good stuff is in the Inquisitor's Handbook, which is like a second PHB and adds to more things the GM must memorize
>Using money is nice, but keeping track gets annoying especially if you aren't use how much to give out

2E
>Skill list is condensed down and easier to understand
>Better balancing, rules have small chunks removed to make playing less annoying, you can actually contribute to combat even if you have just a pistol or a firebomb now
>Players have a bit more freedom in character creation, there's no set classes that lock you into how you spend xp anymore. You pick a homeworld, your background, and your character's role in the party, and that's it.
>Core rulebook is good on it's own, the "Enemy ___" books are nice additions that you can pull from depending on the campaign (Ordo Xenos? Use Enemy Without).

It's a Paladin with the "protecting the weak" turned down to 5% and "purging evil" to 95%. Your holy purpose is to cleanse the galaxy of all the would hamper the Emperor's plan for humanity, and would besmirch his holy worlds.

Play up the mechanics too. If you choose to use fire weapons, emphasize the character's need to cleanse the taint of Chaos and rebellion from everyone and everything around her. If you're a Hospitaller, make it so that her own beliefs on humanity (that everyone has a purpose to fulfill, and hers is to ensure that other may do so despite grievous injury or illness) are something that can be roleplayed around. That's if you're going for a more grimdark appeal though. You could always go for a nice lady who kills for the emperor as a day joy that she really loves.

When in doubt, pick a long lasting and common name from your culture of humanity's past. Common names are great since people will actually remember them

So I'm running the rogue trader "Into the Maw" adventure for some mates, one of whom has never even heard of 40k but is loving it so far. For those that haven't played it the adventure revolves around hunting for an ancient treasure ship, but the guide leaves what's actually in the ship up to you.

>>
>>55064262
>but i need ideas for aesthetics
Steal from history.

>need opinions on psykers.
Why would you rescue her when that's the only way to show the Imperium its armies are still fighting? Or is it an enemy machine; in which case, who's using it? The Dominate?

>what are orkish orbital defences like? Could a troop carrier and escorts go undetected in ork space?
Giant roks or scavenged ship wrecks with watchtowers on them. Special Ork Shouta's and Looka's keep an eye on the surrounding space and yell out to other orks in orbit and on the planet when they spot something. You proabably can't sneak in undetected because landing zones and such are pretty easy to predict.

>Do munitorium requests go through a computer that somehow malfunctions?
Yes, all the time. No, being lost in the Warp is actually being lost in the Warp.

>stories of campaigns where every player gets a vehicle?
Like, individually? Never heard of it but it wouldn't be impossible with a Sentinel-only regiment.

Technically the IG do have bikers, I think, but not actual rules or models.

I played a d&d Warforged character once who called himself "John Made of Flesh"
He spent the whole time trying to convince people he was a normal everyday human who did human things.
It was really fun until it got really annoying.
>>
>>55072926
Why have you not green texted this do we could have another meme?
>>
>>55072977
It was a while back, I can't remember a lot of it. Basically, he'd suffered a lot of damage over the centuries and it was never clear if he legitimately thought he was a human (like the opposite of that Futurama episode with the robot asylum), or was just pretending very badly.
Let me see...

>just saved an inn from an ogre attack
>innkeeper gives us dinner on the house
>"AH YES, HUMAN NOURISHMENT"
>"FELLOW HUMAN, WHERE IS MY TABLE SETTING?"
>"uh, we didn't think you would be eating-"
>"NONSENSE, I REQUIRE ORGANIC SUSTENANCE AS MUCH AS THE NEXT MAN"
>confused innkeeper puts out a plate of food for him
>eats the food
>eats the plate
>eats the silverware
>"DELICIOUS"

He was a Ranger, and through some negotiation with the DM, got a human villager as his "animal companion". >"ATTACK, SWIFTCLAW! STRIKE TRUE"
>"my name is Todd."
The guy really didn't give a shit as long as he got paid.

John Made of Flesh also would abruptly announce from time to time that he had to poop, and would disappear into the woods for like twenty minutes at a time. They eventually went to investigate and found him crouched by a pond, groaning loudly and dropping rocks in the water to make "plop" noises.

This may have been asked before, and may be better asked over in 40kg, but for Marines how precisely do the progenoids work in multiplying?
Do they only get taken out when a marine is killed, or do they just get taken out like wisdom teeth?
How do the chapters keep up with the gene seed tithe, can the progenoids be produced in non-full Astartes, or can they only be produced by marines?
How difficult would it be for a traitor Apothecary to multiply the chapter geneseed he had on him without the equipment of the AdMech and chapter monestary?
I ask because that's pretty much my plan for a BC game I'm in, Veteran of the Long War Luna Wolf trying to rebuild a warband with what geneseed he can get.

They can both be taken out before, but one is usually left in and harvested on death.
If they really need to, they use genetically comparable vat-grown bodies to rapidly grow the organs and harvest them yielding 2 geneseed per 10 years per body.
Really damn hard if he is doing it on his own without the knowledge on how to make the equipment or how to use suitable substitutes.

You should also kill any followers of Slaanesh you come across if you're carrying geneseed.

But anon, the Eldar use the Webway to travel between systems, not the Warp!
(a little problem with having their souls eaten by a certain chaos deity, I believe...)
A map showing the location of some Webway gates and safe routes between them is a great prize, but also a great risk.
As well as other dynastys, the
=][=nquisition will want it for study or use and the Eldar would definately want to recover or destroy it (and any copies!) as well as anyone that couldhave memorised any portion of it.
>>
>>55077790
It's not originally intended for Warp travel by the Eldar - the psychic information contained within just happens to be extremely useful to a Navigator
>>
>>55064262
IG bikers are a form of Rough Rider regiment (or at least they used to be back in the dim and distant past).
Find bike stats in the other gamelines and adapt them, possibly adapt rules for orkish wartraks as heavy weapon carriers, then apply to a rough rider regimental template...
>>
>>55077818
In which case, you can add fun effects such as requiring anyone that's used it to make Willpower checks to avoid speaking only in Eldar for a period of time based on degrees of failure, or thinking that they ARE an Eldar.
You can limit its utility by requiring the player using it to have Common Lore (Eldar) , as they have to understand the cultural metaphors being used, etc.
Positive effects could replicate some of the less powerful divination psychic powers, allowing small bonuses to attacks, an extra dodge, etc.
>>
>>55078052
Aren't Space Marines the only ones able to use attack bikes because humans are too weak?
>>
>>55026435
Most of the homebrew is kinda shit and you are better off just playing normal Rogue Trader since it has more options.
I was in one homebrew that was probably the best way they could handle it where they just assigned aptitudes to Careers and Rogue Trader unique Talents, and it still ended up like we were missing something.
All it really did was allow you to buy stuff with your experience while ignoring the Tier list so you don't pick up a bunch of pointless shit while waiting to move up to the next Tier, which honestly, I don't see why you need Aptitudes for that.
>>
>>55078384
Like most things, there's human compatible gear, then Astartes grade...
So you just make the bikes less durable to reflect their lighter, human compatible, construction
>>
>>55078706
But less-durable human bikes are worthless. It's like saying that people flying wood and cloth biplanes can still fulfill the same role as a jetfighter. A human-sized "attack bike" would be less-armored than a Sentinel, carry lighter guns, and be way less useful at running over enemies.
>>
>>55078853
Look, Rogue Trader has shooty human bikes usable for combat, so clearly, they must exist. Can't be any worse than schmucks riding horses.
>>
>>55078913
Except horses have a ton of advantages over motorcycles. They have much lower logistics requirements, they can carry more destructive weapons, and they can be a source of warmth and food.
>>
>>55077272
What would happen if a marine wounded up without progenoid glands? Would he just die?

SCOUT BIKE
In the Adeptus Astartes, Space Marine Scouts use this lightly armed and armoured vehicle to aid in long range reconnaissance and hit-and-run raids. The Scout Bike is a tough and robust machine, able to traverse almost any terrain and easy to repair and maintain. It is also armed with twin-linked bolters or a grenade launcher and targeter arrays allowing the weapons to be fired on the move—granting the rider impressive firepower. These traits make them popular amongst Explorers with enough influence to acquire them.
>These traits make them popular amongst Explorers with enough influence to acquire them.
From the fluff text in ITS p. 185. Nothing mentioned about the bike being inhumanly oversized or even specifically manufactured for the Adeptus Astartes. Not to say it isn't a big bike.

And even strapping a pair of bolters to a normal, civilian bike rather than an oversized military off-road vehicle is hardly "too heavy". A pair of bolters weighs just 14kg, hardly to heavy a load for a motorcycle is it? Now, I'd say its sort of stupid though, since it'd unbalance the steering wheel and the recoil would be an absolute bitch if you don't engineer a bike to carry them properly like say, the Scout Bike. But it is, in no way, impossible to strap a pair of bolters to the 40k equivalent of a Harley and drive around shooting people.
