Question. New to 40k. I'm wanting to start playing but I really don't want to be a bad guy. I've been reading and all I can find that says who the good guys are would be Ultramarines or Tau. Tau seem good but they're really communists right? Or are they just very social?

Nids are scary now. 15 genestealers near a broodlord roll 60 attacks that hit on 2+. Rolls of 6 to wound are reaolved at AP -4 and deal 2 damage. They move 8 inches and get +1 inch to advance and charge rolls, and can do both in the same turn.

Old One Eye using scything talons has 5 attacks that reroll 1s and hit on 2+. Every hit gives him another attack.

Sort of. Company vets with SS and bolter. It only goes up to 5 men though, so you'd have to take 2 squads (breachers are 10 man, right? Haven't played HH since 8th dropped, and even then I didn't feild breachers all that often)
But on the plus side your trading larger squads for a much better invul.

Dragooned are not good, they do nothing aside from MAYBE distract your opponent if he doesn't have a spare lascannon to BREEEM it away turn 1. That being said, here's my standard 2k list, it's served me well

Does especially well against IG I've noticed, but it's killed marine a fair few times. I've had good luck with Infiltrators and bad luck with electros, so I keep it even though I may be the only one. Vanguard+Infiltrators is great though, with the sword you wound T3 on a 2, T4 on a 3, etc.- it's damn useful.

Stuff worth looking into as well, if you like them

So let's pretend I have a fortification with 15 fire points but can only hold one unit, because GW. What's the most cost effective IMPERIUM unit I could shove in there using all the slots? I was thinking a fully kitten Veteran team but that only uses 10 and has a pistol and a few lasguns seemingly wasted. I've tried 10 Ratlings in the past but they generally failed to wound much when only high T models were coming their way. Also Scions with 4 Volley guns seem nice but I feel like I'd be wasting their Deep Strike, although it would unlock a Taurox P for me.
I don't know a whole lot about non IG IMPERIUM units so I'm open to suggestions.

So, after playing around with Admech so far in 8th, I am starting to feel like our playstyle is in a really weird posistion. It's not really the super aggressive shooting army that it once was, but yet is not really a gunline army either, unless I spam Onagers, Rangers and Kastellan.

So, I want to play a very aggressive, very shooty army based around moving up the field and punching into the enemy.

Thus, I have a few ideas:
>Flamer heavy Mechanized Guard, with Devildogs and Banewolfs to tackle bigger targets, and double H.Flamer Chimeras
>NL assault, with focus on Raptors and Rhino rushing, with support from Auto-Havocs and Defilers
>Dark Eldar with a focus on Wychs and Scourges, with occasional Kabalite Gunboats.

Any suggestions or advice? Or is there a faction or build I'm overlooking?

hey newfriend here so I just got done finishing the first strike starter set and have decided that from here I'm gonna continue to build on the custom chapter (Raven guardtactics)s Ive been writing fluff for. I'm looking to build about 1000 points that will include a chaplain, librarian terminator, assault termies, a few tactical squads, a few jump marines, rhino for transporting my hq's and infantry up the field and dreadnoughts for the heavier stuff.

Is 1000 points a reasonable limit to be able to include all those different units effectively?

strength 8 base doubles out t4 infantry and allows you to wound the vehicle average toughness of 7 on 3s.
that extra little bit of ap reduces a 2+ save to a 5+, basically a terminators invulnerable.
And that -1 to hit doesn't mean much when you're still hitting on 3s rerolling ones.

I could see an argument for two talons against imperium though, more attacks getting extras on a 6+, 5+ if you cast prescience on yourself.

I really like the whole "Abaddon's black crusades were all meant to weaken the walls of reality to eventually create a huge warp rift" retcon.

It's perfectly coherent with the Black Legion's modus operandi. Ever since the 2nd edition, the Black Legion's favorite tactic has always been "fuck shit up to such a degree that the terror and despair creates a warp rift through which daemons and reinforcements can come in at will".

The only difference is that now, it turns out that Abbadon has been doing it on a galactic scale over the course of several thousand years.

It makes sense, it's not a complete asspull, and it's cool.

That's it. I'm sick of all this "AP3 Power Sword" bullshit that's going on in the 40k system right now. Relic Blades deserve much better than that. Much, much better than that.

I should know what I'm talking about. I myself commissioned a genuine Drach'nyen from the Chaos Gods for becoming a fanatic fanboy forever (that's about $ERROR_NUMBER_TOO_LARGE) and have been practicing with it for almost 2 years now. I can even pierce slabs of Space Marines with my Drach'nyen.

Adeptus Astartes Honor Guard spend decades modifying a power sword and test it up to a million times to produce the finest swords known to the Imperium.

Drach'nyens are thrice as stabby as lightning claws and thrice as sharp for that matter too. Anything a lightning claw can stab through, a Drach'nyen can stab through better. I'm pretty sure a Drach'nyen could easily pierce a space marine in Terminator armor with an Storm Shield with a simple half-assed swing.

Ever wonder why the Imperium never bothered conquering the Warp? That's right, they were too scared to fight the disciplined Chaos Space Marines and their Drach'nyen of armor ignoring destruction. Even in the 13th Black Crusade, Imperium soldiers targeted the Chaos Marines with the Drach'nyen first because their killing power was feared and respected.

So what am I saying? Drach'nyen are simply the best weapon that the universe has ever seen, and thus, require better stats in the 40k system. Here is the stat block I propose for Drach'nyen:

ignores invulnerable saves
ignores LoS saves
grants 10 attacks at every initiative
hits on 1+
wounds on 1+
ignores LoS saves
causes instant death all the time

Now that seems a lot more representative of the killing power of Drach'nyens in real life, don't you think?

Assuming this isn't bait, which is admittedly a long shot, very few factions are really what you'd call good. All the Imperium armies have the backdrop of, well, supporting a horrible totalitarian fascist state, but the Salamanders and Space Wolves are specially noted to have respect and care for the little man and the Blood Angels are pretty bro too. Ultramarines are just vanilla Space Marines, get a lot of heroic wanking in their fluff but they're as much brainwashed xenophobic child soldiers as all the other chapters. Eldar (Craftworld and maybe Harlequins, not so much Ynnari and Drukhari) aren't actively malevolent but they do not give half a shit about other races and will throw them into the grinder if it will be even slightly beneficial to them. Tau are pretty close to good, considering the setting, but it's still a strict caste system in an expansionist empire with heavy hints towards using mind control and conditioning techniques towards its citizenry. Bonus points for giving more value to huuman life and better standards of living than the actual human factions. Farsight Enclaves is Tau minus the Orwellian, so if you get past the fact that Farsight is more or less a military dictator, then that's pretty much your "good" faction.

I'm working on some homebrew rules for my Donut Steels. I want to field veteran squads who take shotguns by default instead of bolters, and can buy a flamers and a heavy flamer. I was thinking of just using the Deathwatch shotgun rules, sans Wyrmbreath shells.
