Looking over my Mizzix deck and I just can't ever seem to find it to ever be consistent. Boros at least has something. Usable commanders are Aurelia (combo), Gisela (rdw/light stax), Depala (combo), Tajic (indestructible abuse) and Brion (mad timmy jank). Avacyn is a generic choice if nothing else fits. Kalemne was worth considering, but she's now completely overshadowed by shaniqua le keywords. Basandra and Iroas are generally overshadowed by Marchesa and Gahiji and are better in their 99s, if at all.

So, in light of there finally being a legendary Mardu Knight (and the despair of it having nothing to do with Knights or Knight Tribal), I decided to take a crack at brewing up a Marchesa deck.

This is just a first pass, so it's entirely possible I missed some obvious stuff, but any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Well, I was hoping there'd be a Mardu Knight (W/B would also be fine, but there's a FEW cool ones in Red, plus stuff like Kulrath Knight), so when I saw that Edgar was a Knight, I thought I'd build around him.

But he has zero interaction with other Knights. No tribal support at all. So really, he'd just be there for the colors and the theming, more than anything. So I decided that it's unlikely I'd get a second legendary Mardu Knight in the near future, and instead took "basically there for colors and theming" and went with Marchesa, because her ability is somewhat useful without diluting the deck with Vampires.

Generally when people use dice it's to represent +1/+1 counters. I've only seen people use dice to represent static buffs rarely, and when I'm working an event I'll directly direct them to not do that because it's confusing.

For Serpent, I'd ideally use dice that are a different color than the other ones I'm using. Or at the bare minimum, make it very, very clear that these are +1/+0 counters, not +1/+1 counters, the moment I put the dice down.

Well the only way to get her out on turn 3 is a combination of mana ramp and lifegain for the reduction, realistically. Probably a mix.

Without using things like Crypt you'd need your turn 1 and turn 2 to either be ramp, things that'll gain you life for no mana on turn 3, or ramp AND something that gains you at least 2 life for 1 mana.

I don't think Turn 3 is reliable without heavy ramping.

So I'm thinking of tuning my cat deck into a 1v1 shitshow until Rivals of Ixalan releases and I can start converting the deck into Dinosaur Tribal.

Which of the cat Commanders would you guys suggest are best for a straight 1v1 beatdown and what are some inclusions you'd immediately make? Was thinking either Arahbo for simple attack boosts on flying and trampling cats or Mirri to make sure everything connects.

Because life is a resource in Commander. You can probably reliably drop her on turn 5, and maybe on turn 4 if you hyper-focus it. If it didn't have the "only on your turn" thing, then she'd be swinging for 19 the turn after you cast her (activate on your turn, B's turn, C's turn, D's turn, and your turn again for 15 counters).

Realistically, besides Zuran Orb and saccing all your lands, Ivory Tower is probably your best bet.

Animal Boneyard, Ayli, Consuming Vapors, Diamond Valley, Disciple of Griselbrand, Proper Burial.

These take more time and mana, but they do work.

Buffs and anthems should never use any kind of counter as they (usually) only stay for the turn or are only in effect with things on the board. There is no way to avoid this though, some of the best decks in the format rely on the commander (azami, tazri), and some don't (storm, Doomsday, hermit Druid), so any tier list is gonna have some commanders that just happen to be the best option for a very good deck, and not be inherently broken themselves

i play combo, midrange, jank, and tribal decks. my non-combo decks have ways to deal with combo. my combo deck can do amazing things but it can also get totally blown out really easily. that's the balance. combo often lacks resilience, variety, and stamina. if the combo gets stopped, hosed, or stalled out the combo player usually falls into an anemic state while the rest of the players develop more well rounded strategies and leave them behind.

all of this is from personal experience of course. my playgroup has a lot of very high caliber players.

What's your opinion on proxies in your playgroup? One guy in my playgroup is making Ur-Dragon deck when it comes out and he's gonna proxy every dual land, fetches and some shocks. I mean those are expensive I get but it seems like much.

How do you know that you don't own a really good proxy card? Did you take all the cards you own from the boosters yourself? There are some proxies that even use the same kind of paper, so even if you teared the card up, you still wouldn't know if it was fake or not.

Why are MtG players such walking (or barely walking) stereotypes? Every time I go in to a LGS to pick up some comics or just browse it's always filled with fat, greasy neckbeards wiping their pock marked foreheads on their shitty rock band T shirts. Isn't it possible to just hit a few of these categories? You can be fat and greasy but at least have some clean clothes on.
