When pinning plastic parts, what's the best glue to use?

Should I put the pin in with no glue to hold it and then just bond the plastic with styrene cement? Or use superglue on both the metal pin and the plastic bits? Or superglue on the pin and cement on the plastic and not worry about them mixing? Something else entirely?

What's the best way to fix the rotors on black reach deffkoptas? I've built a couple and had them snap the blades when they fell over (which happens a lot with flying bases). I was thinking heavily worn Heresy era colors but I'm also considering bronze or a mix of vomit browns and slight greens.

I'd like to paint them with washes and drybrush if that helps

Since no one was interested in helping me out I made the decision myself. Primaris get boltguns. Just incase anyone whines about me using them as vets. Here is my first one. Pretty happy with it, although the left arm positioning was a bit annoying because of the head on the belt. Can live with it though. Few mold lines to clear up too.
>>

Could do mixed metal colors with green/vomit ooze coming from the joints, like they've just been slapping their armor together all these years. You could mark out your elites or HQ by having a few chunks of pre-heresy colors and maybe even a shoulder insignia.

>>
>>54840091
Touch 20, handle an hour, "Completely" in 24.

Not sure about sandable, what effect would sandability have
>>
>>54840037
Generally yes, however a gloss black primer will make metallics way more shiny and reflective, and is essential for the "true" metallic solvent based paints like Alclad makes.
>>
>>54840162
Should be fine then. You want to be careful of the ones which dry in 10 mins or less, I find they aren't as good. If it's sandable that means after priming you can still clean up mold lines you missed.

>>54840180

First time poster with first time minis. How did I do?
>>
>>54840574
Needs a wash and some highlights. Seems fine enough for a first time basecoat, but you should practice painting "in between the lines" per se.
>>
>>54840574
clear the mold lines before painting, learn to drybrush, shade, and wash
and for crying out loud, do your bases properly

German Uniforms were never that green, if you can apply a wash of brown over the whole model it should show off all those nice details
>>
>>54840610
I used some home made black wash on them, guess that's not enough then. Trying to improve on my shaky as fuck hands.

>>54840614
They are unbased. They are going to get their bases later. Thanks for the drybrushing tip, I looked up on it.

>>54840660
>German Uniforms were never that green

That's what I thought. Fucking Italeri, the box on the back said I should use their medium flat green. Do I have to buy specific brown wash or can I make it with watered down brown acrylic?
>>
>>54840574

If those're the first minis you've ever painted, pretty good (first time ever is NOT for layering paints, save that for second attempt). The rifles look a little sloppier than the rest and the second guy from right has a gray smear on the back of his hand.
>>
>>54840714
Really watered down brown acrylic will work. We're talking 1:10 paint to water. Italeri are shit for paints and callouts, I've done a Lynx Helicopter in the wrong grey before because of Italeri's incompetence.

Vallejo 955 "German Grey" is the exact shade of WW2 German uniforms and what I use
>>
>>54840714
>Trying to improve on my shaky as fuck hands.
Try bracing your hands on your desk AND on each other as you paint (elbows on the table and your hands together holding the model and brush). I got shaky hands too and this is the only way I can steady myself. It takes some getting used to but it's how I do everything now.
>>
>>54840792
Elbows on the arm rests, wrists braced against the table, sometimes fingers bracing against each other works pretty well for me.
>>
>>54840770
>Italeri are shit for paints and callouts

But I just bought 6 different paints from them. Well fuck. I'll see if they sell Valejo paints in this shithole country. In the meanwhile guess I'll have make do with these paints for the rest of the germans, see if I can change the tone or some shit.
>>
>>54840630
>Not all cans that say primer on them actually work as well as proper sandable lacquer rattle cans.

Yes, that is true, but >>54840547 is talking about a specific product made by Rustoleum that is well-regarded here in /WIP/.
>>
>>54838016

>>
>>54839478

Some I've been considering:

Mould and verdigris; paint the metal all dark bronze (black base drybrushed up) and the soft parts in a warm grey-brown. Then do green-blue washes over everything.

Super rusty; start with a brown base, drybrush dark silver, paint over the non-metal parts with white, apply lots of orange and brown washes.

Slimy slug; brown base, grey drybrush, block metals in dark brown with silver highlights, many washes of nuln oil gloss, pick out teeth and such in white, gloss varnish.

Bright; base white, metal parts get a coat of dark brown followed by copper, yellow wash over everything, bit of pink on the fleshy parts, thin sepia glaze to tie it all together.

Radioactive; same as bright, but after doing the copper, glaze with yellow and green and highlight eyes and such with yellow.

Mushroom; grey, light grey-brown drybrush, details in very dark grey, dark brown wash.

So long story short, I wanted some metal lictors and only could snag one unassembled, so I'm dealing with premade models. Pic related was horribly primed and I'm going to remove the base to give him an acetone bath. Do I need to freeze him first and unassemble him before I do the stripping?
>>
Also the stripping paint guide on the OP doesn't work
>>
>>54842624
Acetone will dissolve (most kinds of) superglue, but if it isn't able to get to it, it might just eat away at the edges and make it weak, which would be bad. Probably best to freeze and pull apart (actually, if it's metal, try just pulling first, you might not need to freeze) so the acetone can get right at the glue and give you a nice clean mini to work on.

not sure if trolling but isnt that literally the WordBearers colour scheme?
>>
>>54842973
Yes I got the cracked ice / dry earth one and I wasn't impressed with it. The texture has a kind of grain in it, presumably from the tool which cut it out and it's pretty visible in the final product. Also, I found that most putties tended to stick to the pin as much as the base and often tore or curled when being rolled. It's a bitch to keep clean and just generally not very helpful. Since cracked earth is possible to achieve with different methods, I pretty much gave up on it.

For a pattern which wouldn't be easy to do any other way, I might consider it. Lube it with vaseline and use a good putty like procreate and it could work, but it will be a pain and you may well have to do some tidy-up on the texture.

hey /wip, i was wondering, do you ever paint/model while drunk or high?

i like to smoke some weed while painting somtimes but when i'm modelling i like to stay sober or otherwise i'm searching for my tools and getting destracted by the music. i'm not a drinker
>>
>>54844125
I like to lick my brushes and sniff my glue until the Models start talking to me to get into the mood for a session
>>
Looking for colour scheme suggestions for Ynarri. Mostly harlequins and a few craftworld guys (including a crimson hunter and a wraithknight) plus the triumvirate. No DE yet, but might get some scourges, since they look pretty cool.

Is there anything that would make pic related actually look good?
>>
>>54844356
for starters, remove the swirling cheese
if you insist on leaving the swirling cheese on, paint it like fire: with the highlights in the recesses, and the dark colors on the edges
>>
>>54844169
I keep OoE at my desk when I work, the fumes make him talk like wrex and tell me to do better. I feel as if the hivemind is calling to me.
>>
>>54844415
How physically possible is it to remove all that crap? Seems like a huge amount of resculpting would be needed.
>>
>>54844520
you'd pretty much be better off sculpting over a different model
>>

I actually have much better results with the cans labeled "paint + primer in one!" Than with the straight primer cans, which give me a much grittier finish. Good for terrain but less so for detail. Still generally acceptable
>>
>>54844125
I find that 4-6 beers or a few mixed drinks put me in a relaxed and creative mood, and actually help steady my hand. The problem is that after a few I tend to want a few more and sometimes have to throw in the towel and just read a book when my highlights get sloppy
>>
>>54844356

My personal inclination would be to go for a very misty look with softer, muted, pale-gray-with-a-tint colors. E.g., light blue-gray armor and greenish-silver... er, ectoplasm or whatever the heck that stuff is. Or, yes, maybe give it a glowy effect.
>>
>>54842731
Micron black pen. It's an absolute dream compared to a fine brush.

>>54843938
Neither, actually. Homebrew marines I've posted on here a few times before. Grey main colour with codex compliant trim colours for each company. Arthurian knights themed.

Well, today was a waste of time. Tried to do a base Zandri Dust/Layer Ushabti Bone on my Knight fist armour pane; but it just turned into an ungodly mess of everything because the ushabti was too brushstrokey and the agrax recess shade didn't go at all well. Probably just going to strip it tomorrow and retry.

How do you do layering properly, anons? Do I need to THIN slightly less, or just mark everything out more clearly? Zandri Dust went on fine on one of the shoulderpads and the nameplate panel, so that's not the problem. Trying to get pic related colour, but I'm thinking I should just go with Zandri Dust, highlight Ushabti and recess Agrax rather than trying to darken down Ushabti with agrax, since that also didn't work at all because washes. Managed to get the Knight skeleton to black metal with nuln oil, but I can't get a correct AND consistent colour on this to save my life

Painted this guy completely wasted a month or two ago. Only mini I've ever painted start to finish in one sitting. Was bored and thought fuck it I don't have any use for this cultist might as well paint something that's not in my army's scheme. Was fun to just pick whatever color
I'm always high when I paint tho but usually only a beer anything more and I can't highlight/paint in the lines. 1 or 2 helps calm my hands
weed+ painting is dank, I get all into it and I feel the workload nature of this hobby helps to keep you on track focused and not just sit around stoned and do nothing. I can feel more accomplished if I paint something high than if I just sat around watching tv/video games.

Before GW started selling overpriced textured mediums nobody would have questioned this.

Not anymore than applying the basing material and painting it after you already painted the mini.
The only difference is between where you could accidentally get paint, the mini or the base.

Is it an abberation that Reaper Paints are this durable out of the bottle?

I had a few sample smears on styrene plate and I found that they managed to be wet sandable starting from 320 grit.

Well to be honest it started as a sort of dark angles look. You know how they have those bright edges with the dark armor? I'm actually just jacking the paint scheme for my sisters. I think it's a cool color scheme.

Because enamels are old school, like scale models. Good acrylics didn't even exist until the 80's and didn't become widespread until the 90's and didn't become this easy to use until the 2000's.

Quick question. Trying to use a Dark Angels like color scheme, does the style of edge highlighting on the backpack look alright? And do you think the bronze goes alright with the dark green power armor and the Ivory that will be going on the robes. Thinking about using it for some details on the mini.

Not entirely accurate. Acetone will work fine on virtually any superglue, what it won't dissolve very well is those two part epoxy cement glues. Those things are virtually indestructible.

Putting the model into an acetone bath would have been fine and only required minor cleanup around joints with a hobby knife, but putting it in the freezer isn't overkill and is acceptable.

Since my warband is entirely made from unpainted, broken, gluey first-army syndrome messes I acquired from a friend, I think I'm gonna name them The Reclaimed.

jokaero Orange thinned down with matte medium?
>>
>>54852800
Put both thumbs under the base and flex it upwards like your forcing your thumbs through the base. The base should bend a tiny amount, shattering the glue bond. Or just push the mini off from the back of the base. Primaris have thick legs so won't break. Shit like skeletons, elves etc are stuff you can't do this too.

I remember it the other way around, that an artificial head gives a more 'alive' feeling compared to constantly looking through a slit in the armour which helps the psyche.

Just Google'd it;
>Another interesting aspect of the Contemptor Pattern was the design of the Dreadnought's head. The oversized metal helm possessed the precious cargo of sensor nodes and visual Auspex and pict-finders linked to the foetal corpse curled deeper within. The Contemptor was fashioned with the simulacrum of a head to focus its pilot's awareness forwards. It helped to create an impression within the corpse's neurological sensory input/output that it was still alive, for it saw the outside world just as it had seen it in life: from a human perspective, albeit from a much taller vantage point than in the wounded Astartes' previously organic form.

>>54850505

You've just gotta know how to remove moldlines, prime, thin, highlight & shade. Drybrushing, basing etc can wait until you've finished a unit or two. Magnetising and converting can wait until you've finished the earlier steps.

Watch Duncan & OP videos, practice on some minis & post here for feedback. Once you've eventually mastered the brush you can look up stripping and strip your first models to redo them.
>>

Is there any painting stuff for LOTR shit? Or just Warhammer? I'm guessing the same principles apply anyway
>>
>>54854456
The base principles of painting apply to any model. Thin your paints, apply a clean, consistent base coat and work towards understanding how to mix colors and layer them. Sometimes you need to add tiny, TINY amounts of paint to a base paint to gradually build a highlight, sometimes paints just magically work slapped one on top of the other.
>>
>>54854456
Did a quick search and can only find Duncan vids on Warhammer Fantasy but should be the same principles for shading/highlighting, choice of colours, brush handling etc

Don't know much about LotR names and such but OP vids at least include board videos like how to paint faces, preshading etc etc

A shame there's no specific colour scheme vids for LotR but you can probably ask anons here for tips or modify a Duncan scheme from WH Fantasy

Get some sculpting putty. I recommend ProCreate, but kneadatite yellow/blue (AKA green stuff) will work OK too.

Identify the bits of the models you don't like. In my case this would be the large spikes on the newer plastics.

Do a bit of research and thinking about the various ways someone can be diseased and decaying and choose one for your theme. You might go with parasitic infestation, bloating, withering, flesh falling off or any number of other afflictions. I'm going to go for fungal growth.

Remove the parts of the models you don't like and bits which don't fit your theme well. Replace them with bits which fit your theme, either from other kits or made from putty. For example, you could mould maggots and worms coming out of all the holes in their flesh or make their fleshy parts skeletal with bits from an undead kit. I'm going to sculpt mushrooms growing out of them wherever I cut off a bit I don't like (or just add putty over bits I want to cover in some cases).

Base and paint in a way which complements your theme and there you go.

Alternatively (or additionally) pick an environmental theme to do their bases in. For example, a swamp, muddy battlefield or ice world. You can add little details to make the models seem to fit into that environment, like suitable camouflage, or bits of the environment attaching to them (icicles forming from their slime in an ice theme, razor wire wrapped around limbs for a muddy battlefield, etc.)
>>
>>54854785
I actually was thinking, and realised that I've never seen any models going for the decaying flesh look.
Infected, swollen, inflamed, etc.
But never dead, with the black of rot, and the blues brought on by vivianite, and the white of dead flesh.
Trying to think if that'd work well or if I should keep thinking.
And thanks for the ideas also, I was thinking of cordyceps too, but I've never done any of this sorta stuff before, so greenstuff is a bit nerve wracking.

If you're in the UK, £16.99. That's the kit I used and the retailer I got it from; they deliver quickly and I have never had an issue with them.

Done basic metal paint. Now to varnish and then mask it up for a chipped paint effect.

/toy/ has a scale modeling thread. You are still welcome here of course, but they may have more relevant tips.

Might want to go for a wash into the crevices instead of normal paint. Could also use a bit more edge highlighting on the rocky bits.

sorry mate, I'm in the heartland of the USA. ah well, I may just wander through some of the local hobby shops and see what I can find.

out of curiosity, do you folks in the UK have shops you go to or is mostly gaming clubs? I was talking to a britbong at a local tourney here and he made it sound tough to find stores. I have like 8 within 20 min driving distance
>>
>>54857344
There's a GW store in pretty much every city, although they generally only have a single employee and hours aren't always super convenient.

Where I live, in a fairly minor city, there are also two non-GW gaming shops in easy reach, both of which offer multiple gaming tables.

I expect that in London, or even Manchester, there will be many more venues available. So, the guy you were talking to probably lived in a fairly unpopulated area.
>>
>>54857344
Most model shops here are geared towards Railway Modelling so not really. It's mostly game clubs aside from the Games Workshop of course
>>
first time painting models and I am doing a shinier riff on the classic DG look + rusting out big sections of their bodies. this is what I have so far on my contemptor and I could use some advice on where to go from here
>>
Guys, anyone knows where I can find shoulderpads like these? I want to build a samurai space marine army but using the blocky shoulderpads that I found in a few websites look a bit too distinct from space marines.

Just thought I'd show off what I've been working on most of the day, it's not finished and those Pauldrons are giving me a lot of trouble but I'm glad I chose Steel Confessors for my new Space Marines army (I'm a Guard player normally so it's nice to have something less complicated to paint)

I was thinking about slipping in a layer of red veiny stuff on the tentacle with some green/yellow splotches. Should I do anything to the gun itself or add any more mutations?

Some progress on my Warpsmith. Doing mechatendrils is fun.

>>54857620
The greenstuff is a bit too undetailed to make a proper impression, but it's well enough for a starter. The worn down armour sections look really good, although you should look into the guide to taking pictures, because it's hard to tell at certain points.

>>54857630
Chapter house does those, i think.

>>54857643
White can be pain to paint. I always go with a undercoat of valleyo's stained marble and add the real white over that. Proper layering is the key to painting all bright colours.
>>
>>54857066
Damn that looks sexy

>>54857620
Yeah, tentacle looks out of place
>>
>>54857868
Goliaths aren't abhumans.
>>
>>54857946
when I get the tentacle fixed up I will get a better pic for you guys. thanks for the advice
>>
>>54857959
abhuman is just abnormal human, which they are considering they're literally vat-grown muscle
>>
>>54857984
No, abhuman is a stable mutation of human that breeds true.

House goliath is just a group of roidmonkeys who pump iron, wear leather and say bro a lot. They aren't vat grown or mutated. Just normal humans who do their best to leave humanity behind.

>>54857946
I added the red to the tentacle and it looks kind of terrible. Should I just try and get the green stuff off altogether or is there a color that I could make this thing so it wouldn't be hideous?

>>54858181
I could do that pretty easily. thanks for the idea
>>
>>54857946
You're reaching the point of TOO MUCH STUFF here. Gonna be hard to create a focal point on the model if you cram it full of random details.
Granted it still looks good at this point but any crazier ideas you might want to save for bigger models.
>>
>>54858072
it literally says they're vat grown on the page. https://www.warhammer-community.com/2017/08/13/breaking-news-necromunda-returnsgw-homepage-post-1/
>Every member of House Goliath is a slab of vat-grown muscle
>>
>>54857946
The two tentacles in front of the body really mess with the pose/composition.
Without them the model would work better, cause everything would flow into the direction where he points the gun.

I agree with the other anons, there is borderline too much going on here.
>>
>>54858212
>Any kind of mutant is an abhuman
literally no

In 40k, "abhuman" specifically refers to a select group of mutant human strains. All abhumans are mutants, but not all mutants are abhumans.
>>
>>54858262
>tfw GW already fucked up before the game is released.

Even Space Marines don't fuck around with cloning too much because nobody know how it works anymore.
How the fuck would a gang in Necromunda even know how to do that?
>>
>>54858227
I'd say take it off, should not be too had to do. Play around with the green stuff a bit. If you don't have proper tools, use some tooth picks, maybe a knive's edge. Remember to wet your tool to prevent the 'stuff from sticking. Maybe, instead of one giant tentacle, try buildng up multiple tentacles, squirming out of the dreadnought's rotten hull.

>>54858246
>>54858288
I can see where you're coming from and i agree: It's quite a lot of stuff. I aimed to give him a Doc Ock-look, with the mechandrites doing most of the work for him. I'll prime him and give it a couple of layers - i figure if that doesn't work out, i can still remove the two tentacles on his front.
>>
>>54858343
ok I will work on it
>>
>>54858334
Fabius Bile CC'd them in a cloning email accidentally
>>
>>54858227
If you like that tentacle where it is, try making it thinner and maybe like 'veiny' so something happens along its length
>>
>>54858334
Maybe they literally mean the muscle is grown in vats and grafted onto them?
>>
>>54858536
Maybe. But that seems like a stretch too. Nobody in the IG, not even the independent characters, i.e. legendary heroes ever got vat grown replacement limbs.
It seems to me that should be something that would have probably been mentioned anywhere else in 40k at least once before. And I've never heard of that in the setting.
>>
Vat growing isn't some lost technology, and it isn't technically cloning. Admech does it all the time. It's not completely unreasonable that some nobles can.
>>
>>54852491
Drybrush the stone, edge highlight the metal wash the leather, then repost and we'll go from there.
