Are they worth getting a squad of 5 or whatever? All I've heard is Hellblasters being the best Primaris unit, which works well for an all Primaris army like mine. I mainly just want to greenstuff their legs into proper legs and replace their dinky knives with cooler melee weaponry

So, I bought a cheap rhino on ebay awhile back and finally got around to chaos-ing it up for my Night Lords. Shit was glued down, so I had to work around some stuff, but I'm honestly pretty satisfied. The launcher, gunner, and trophy pole are all magnetized, so I can take advantage of all the options CSM have for their rhinos. I couldn't figure out a good way to add the other combi-options, so I figured I'd have a dude pop out the top instead.

I agree--the olive skin is excellent. It looks more grim, cruel, and brutal than the normal orky green. And that's awesome.
>>
>>54817325
HAH! I remember you pointing out their tiny heads a few /wip/ threads ago.
The valiant guardsmen of the Segontium Line Infantry regiments are decidedly NOT abhumans! They are loyal and dutiful imperial subjects ever since the Imperial Fists liberated them from degenerate Men of Iron during the Great Crusade. And they seek to serve the Emperor to the fullest by requesting that all tithed regiments be deployed in crusades to honor the debt they owe the Imperium for freeing them from their suffering.

the problem with that is that you're making taking out a project into a project onto itself, I just keep everything in a huge dump on my desk (with things to far down the backlog to be done immideatly put away in bags, that way I can just pick up a brush and whatever and get some work done.
>>
>>54817828
I have no recommendations or pointers for painting, but please for the love of whatever you believe in, put some effort into basing.
I don't understand how people are happy with their *insert technical paint here* slathered bases, mud/mars/w.e.

Few simple sticks/grass tufts/leaves/puddles will do wonders for the look.
Also note color-schemes apply to bases too, e.g. dark miniature on a dark base will not show much on tabletop.

This kit came in 4 pieces. The interior is also equally detailed. The casting is amazing, I only ever found 3 air bubbles. Considering how details and how fine some of that detail is impressed me. I did not have to clean up the model nor any mold lines. I only had to give a quick clean to wash off the releasing agent.

http://www.tabletop-world.com

The company is Croatian and this model cost around £45. I will definitely be buying from them again.
>>
>>54818001
Tundra doesn't need any white painted, just rocks/grasses with snow scattered about.
You can paint rocks blue-ish and grasses yellow/orange hues to compliment the marines.

White also isn't as bad as people make it, just start with a grey/brown/white primer and work with 2-3 coats.
>>
>>54816591
It's better than my first model. Also agree that the highlights are a bit much, looks good on the bayonet though.
>>
So I just got a bunch of the old snap fit marines they used for painting lessons from my local redshirt, and I wanna take the opportunity to practice and step up my painting game. Thing is, I actually don't know enough about painting to know what to practice. Basically at this point actually I really understand is base coat and then wash. I'd say prio is to learn how to thin, recess shade and edge highlight well, the rest comes as its needed.
Just practice on your models, compare them with others and see what you could improve then paint over. They'll end upp getting thicc after layers of paint but they're your practice models after all.

>>54818609
>Probably red for the eyes?
I'll try this. Seen Duncan do two different version, one where he painted red then made the 'lens' effect with White Scar and another where he painted the eye white and filled it with some red shade.. Which would you recommend? If it matters, I'm still pretty shaky.

>Joints definitely black
Will do

> and metal all metal
What? All my metal is currently green but if you see pic, Duncan painted some parts like 'unpainted metal', should I do the same?

>>54818738
Look at Duncan videos and just practice on your models. You'll get better by simply repeating the process and trying new things

>>54818766
Not sure what but something feels off, are they thicc?
Other than that, looking good
What's the deal with the weird bases?
>>
>>54818826
I think it's because I didn't clean them properly, most are resin

Also the bases are just not done yet

well, it was relatively quick job!
I started with giving them two coats of genestealer purple as base colour. Then i layered:
genestealer purple -> screamer pink -> pink horror -> pink horror/ghost grey -> gost grey on light part
genestealer purple -> GP/Naggaroth night 1:1 -> naggaroth night -> black on dark part

I was painting each colour on every blade so it was quite easy to paint them all. Doing one blade at time was pain in ass and took ages.

The FB post reads like a joke to me. I doubt anybody would seriously do that.

Though the laundry list of complaints in that lawsuit kind of make him seem a little eccentric.
I mean there are certainly valid complaints there, like GW forcing minimum stock of games they can't sell on small stores or arbitrary stuff like the prohibition of using GW's official product pictures for online retailers and stuff like that.

I've heard some pretty valid complaints over the years from store owners, but yeah from a cursory glance I doubt this will go anywhere.

Out of Death Guard, Emperor's Children, Tyranids, and AdMech, what are the most enjoyable to paint and mod?
I started with a Fire Warrior squad, but they just have no real personality and got dry and dull to me quickly. Not to mention I hate how bad the Tau look with a gritty design, making it so they need to look like perfect soldiers off a manufacturing line. So I've decided to pick up an army that is customizable, has personality, and is fun to paint.
Thanks for the help.
>>
>>54824040
Put water in a jar or something? Doesn't SOLVE the problem entirely since I still occasionally accidentally wash my brush with tea, but it stops you unconsciously grabbing the handle of the paint water and drinking without looking.

So new potential DEldar player, as someone who has painted one model in his life when he was like thirteen how fucked am I choosing this army?

As a more real question, I plan to field some Archons and I'm planning out some army fluff. Namely the two Archons for 'my dudes' are a pair of fraternal twins, one male and one female. For the male I want to change his head to an Incubus helmet and 'break' one of his horns to give him some individuality. For the female I'm wondering if there are any heads that are noticeably feminine that will fit into the rest of the Archon that anyone can recommend?

Reaper should have some half spider half woman models if you wanted any sort of smaller daemon count as too.

Working on death guard. Each dude takes approx there evenings. Two weekends on the rhino
Happy so far, still need to work on getting paint consistency right. At the moment it sometimes feels like it's easy to get thin highlights and others the paint sticks to the brush too much.

Other than that, I wanna learn how to glaze for smooth gradients also. At the moment good edge highlights are basically my workhorse, would be good to get a wider to toolbox.

Well, here are a couple of practice/test marines like I said I would do earlier. I'm a new painter. I know these look like shit. Any advice you could give me on how to improve so that when I graduate from test marines to my actual army they won't look like shit would be appreciated. Thank you.

I'm sorry for the poor image quality, I've done the best I can to try and get decent lighting at least with what I have. Hopefully at least one of the two sets is good enough.

Tried "drybrushing?" on the one on the left and just painting on the one on the right. Think the drybrushed one looks even more shit personally, but i heard someone at my shop talking about how great it was and his minis looked pretty decent to me so i gave it a shot.

Thanks in advance for anyone who can give me advice, every little bit helps.

As a Night Lords player, you only get better with time, anon. Pic related. The left was my first attempt at lightning, and the right is how it looks now. Find a technique that works for you. I basically use the Duncan method. Using my second thinnest brush, I make some connecting strokes with Glacier Blue (it's a Reaper paint, which is similar to Hoeth I think from GW), then with my thinnest brush, I go over connecting parts with white scar. Obviously, the last part is the hardest, especially since I often have trouble with the very tip drying. Just be quick. If you fuck up, just clean it up with you base color, which is Kantor for me.

Here's Duncan on Night Lords:

So I've got some Krylon flat black primer and Leadbelcher spray

I assume for proper priming, I have to spray the primer first and then lead belcher? I tested doing just Leadbelcher, and then one with Primer, THEN leadbelcher and the one with just Leadbelcher was far thinner and less prone to chipping. I might have fucked up though so can I get some advice?
>>
>>54829464
>just a non-primer is less prone to chipping than an actual primer plus the same fucking spray from the first time on top

The problem is you. Especially if it's thick from just two coats.
>>
>>54825636
I'd fill in some of the detail on that scythe unless you want it to clearly look like a scavenged necron weapon. Love the paint job btw.
>>
>>54829522
Okay so what do I do then? When I spray the black primer do I cover completely or leave it speckled? Also do I wait an hour before adding the leadbelcher? And might I have been too close with the leadbelcher?
>>
>>54829299
thanks, now if only I could get the skulls down
>>
>>54829618

Speckled is better. If you can get complete coverage without putting it on thick you can go for it but it sounds like you're still pressing the trigger too heavy. Practice short puffs or quick passes. The primer is expendable, the miniature is not. Don't worry about "wasting" primer or getting "perfect" coverage. As long as there are no huge swathes of bare plastic you're fine.
>>
>>54829672
Alright cool, and what about the leadbelcher? How do I go about spraying that on over the speckled primer without it being too thick, and also without it being grainy because the speckled underneath.
>>
>>54829464
>>54829687

What the other guy said. If it's thicc, you're doing something wrong. I just used Krylon to spray over an old rhino and it was thin enough that I could still see the shitty brush strokes over the previous owner. Things to note when using non-GW sprays:
A) Shake the shit out of it. I'm sure you did shake it a lot, but when you think you're done shaking it, shake it some more and shake in between sprays, too. GW sprays are super thin, so they're more forgiving, but regular sprays are not.
B)Tap and sweep. Don't hold the button down nor stay in one place for long. What I do is make passes like I'm swinging a sword or something. Press and slash kind of a deal.
>>
>>54829627

Again, anything free hand is just a matter of practice. The general tip is to make an outline and fill it in. My advice for night lord skull masks is don't go all the way down the helmet. Kind of keep it centered. I did full face on my test models and it just doesn't cut it. You can see the one all the way to the right of my last pic.

I'd personally only use drybrushing for specific areas etc, never to shade/highlight an entire model
Other than that, looks good for your first model. Could get the shade thinner (ie apply smaller quantity so it's an actual shade, not pure black).
Also, there's nothing stopping you from painting over your test marines and practice more before you proceed to fuck up your actual models

Thin stripe of green-stuff around the hood-trim, let it cure 30-80mins.
Your choice of sculpting tool and start pressing some wavy lines away from hood.

Keep your fat fingers/tools wet/lubricated throughout.
Also less is better than too much, you can always add more after first layers have cured.

I'm gonna keep going at this pace and hopefully my skills improving will make it faster naturally, if I deliberately try to go faster I'll just rush them and they'll look shit. If rather play a few games unpainted and paint them to my best standard than hate my army forever

My first attempt at a Plague Marine - what do you think?
>>
>>54835195

Looks ok. But my personal opinion is that the model needs more contrast. If you highlight the green for instance, and THEN ad your edge highlight, you will get a bigger bang for the work you put in. The model will "pop" more, and be more of an eye candy.
>>
>>54835242
It does look a bit monotone

Apart from some bits on the backpack, the model doesn't really have any edges that end in green and I'm not that great at choosing where my highlights should go/don't want conspicuously different splodges of a different green all over

Hey lads,
I'm going to paint my Tau start collecting box before I order more models (except a Cadre Fireblade which I am ordering with the paints).
I have sizes 00,0,1,2, and 3 W&N brushes in the mail from the UK too.
I am thinking of painting the Tau in the T'au sept ochre armour. The recommended paints for this is about 27 paints/washes. Is this a good idea? Seems like a lot.
>>
>>54835522
That's what (((GW))) recommend, but you only need about 8 paints plus 2 washes (black and earthshade are fine). If you make a wet pallette it's very easy to mix your basecoat with a bit of white/light grey to get your highlight colour and do the reverse with black/dark grey
>>
>>54835522
>>54835654
At the moment I have
• Armour:
o XV-88
o Tau Light Ochre
o Eldar Flesh*
o Ungor Flesh*
• Red Armour
o Khorne Red
o Evil Sunz Scarlet
o Fire Dragon Bright
• Fatigues
o Rhinox Hide
o Gorthor Brown
• Tau Skin
o The Fang
o Russ Grey
o Fenrisan Grey
• Black Armour*
o Abaddon Black
o Mechanicus Standard Grey
o Aministratum Grey
• White Armour
o Celestra Grey
o Ulthuan Grey
o White Scar
• Markings, Gyros, Coils
o Ceramite White
o Retributor Gold
o Runefang Steel
o Caledor Sky
o Temple Guard Blue
• Chipping*
o Skavenblight Dinge
o Ironbreaker
• Washes
o Agrax Earthshade
o Nuln Oil
>>
>>54835522

Well, considering your average Tau player paints his army like this

>Unbox
>Put together
>ready to play... As proxy if need be

So any form of painting on your part, and you have guaranteed yourself a better looking army than 95% than the rest of the gang.

Id say, get a starter set of paints, nothing to fancy. With that you can mix and match to get just about any color combination you want. But Id still recommend you get the "base color" of your choice, so if you go with the ochre theme, get the Ochre paint and use white or yellow to mix a highlight.
>>
Epic thread is back up for those interested
>>54834553
>>
>>54835668
Go for:
XV-88
Tau Light Ochre (as the Tau are mostly armour it's a safer bet to just use the GW highlight)
Khorne Red
Gorthor Brown (the Agrax Earthshade will darken it down making the darker base colour irrelevant)
The Fang
Mechanicus Standard Grey (like the Brown the Nuln Oil will darken this to black so there is no point getting a black paint)
Ulthuan Grey
Ironbreaker
Retributor Gold
Nuln Oil
Agrax Earthshade

So that's 11 (9 paints + 2 washes). If you need to lighten anything use the Ulthuan Grey and if you need to darken anything use the Mechanicus Standard Grey. You can then add to your paint collection later.

I'd like to just add that if you are buying this all brand new I can highly recommend going for the Vallejo Game Color equivalents. The pigment is much nicer and smoother than GWs which makes mixing and shading them far easier (I don't GW do this on purpose but I think it would certainly help them sell pre-mixed shaded versions), dropper bottles are so much better as well.

Just use the chart to find the equivalents

I'm mostly getting into this for the modelling. I have always enjoyed arty things. I'm not too concerned with how other people paint or play their armies; I just want to git gud at painting and modelling myself.

The starter sets are all Vior'la too, which sucks.

>>54835763
I could get White Scar and Abaddon Black to lighten/darken too?
I kind of don't reeeeeally mind buying a bunch of paints; I will use them eventually, and I'd rather have the paints to do the model nicely the first time rather than going back to repaint models later on.
I dunno, I like your idea of being minimalistic, but I still want to be able to do as good a job as possible.

Asked the same question when I first saw this and that's partially why i'm here now, but as >>54830751 said, it's from AoS Blood Warriors

Thanks for these pictures, trying to go for a true scale style army and I helps to know what works with what, Also from what i could find looking at the AoS sprues on GW site, they share the same style of a two piece upper torso (front and back) so they could be inter mixed with other similar model styles. Primaris seem weird though in that they have individual legs and the torso also contains the groin piece. Might make them a bit tricky to work with

Sounds good and if you have any, would love to see pcitures. My own force (fluff is still a wip) is a group of surviving loyalist XVI who acknowledge that irrelevant of if they stayed loyal or not, many of them would look on them with distrust at the least and be outright hostile at the worst due to bearing the Arch-Traitors gene seed. So they end up more or less hitching a ride with a rouge trader (basically so can have a shit ton of modeling freedom down the line) and then proceed to go on shit ton of bizarre adventuresyes, i went there

As a general rule Black and White will brighten the colour but change the it's tint. That's why it's always better to Darken/Lighten with Light Dark and Light Greys (also if you want to paint White and Black you just use the greys anyway as black is a bugger to shade and white is impossible to highlight, hence why I didn't include it in the list as it seems to be a pointless addition). If you have the funds go for the whole shebang, it helps that Citadel's system is pretty much guaranteed to get results in the end but I feel that it's a bit too paint-by-numbersy at times.
When I started I used the basic 8 paint-set from Citadel (we're talking late 90's 2nd edition here) and mixed everything to get the shades I wanted. Though I'm no Golden Daemon winner it certainly made me a better painter as I developed "the eye" for what I needed.

N-NANI?!

WiP, how gratuitous would it be to buy the new GK strike squad just for knight themed bits for my Knight themed astartes?
>>
I wanna start a Emperor's Children or Dark Eldar army, but half of either army's old models are kinda janky and not that nice looking.
Does anyone know any places I can nab some ideas for kitbashing some stuff and what have you?

Looks dirty in the wrong way
Did you only shade the recesses or shade the entire model?
>>
>>54835946
Not very if you get some mould making stuff and use the plastic bits as masters

Dark Eldar kitbash amazingly with the Elven stuff from Fantasy/AoS

Hey, I'm trying to do a wet stone effect like pic related, and I was wondering if nuln oil gloss over mechanicus standard grey or something darker would create this effect? If that's not the method I want to use, what would you suggest? Thanks.

Chaps, what size/type of base is a defiler traditionally put on? I don't want him free standing.
