So I'm part of an intrigue game, need help figuring out what's happening. I'll greentext the mystery so far:

>homeless man is brought it as part of the drunk picked up off the street
>he ends up beating a guard unconscious and barricading himself in a room
>we get him and beat him unconscious
>the guy is covered in boils and half blind
>whenever he touches things they decay
>next day we try and interrogate him
>find he's carrying a bunch of books (including philosophy and holy texts)
>keeps mumbling about 'Evelyn'
>figure out the boils/blindness is probably an oracle curse
>find injection scars between his toes and on the back of one knee
>had a tattoo of two philosophers in like a ying-yang thing, it was almost covered by boils
>we go to investigate where he was picked up
>it's on the edge of the red light district where it borders the slums
>find a homeless guy who said he gave the two constables some beer to not get picked up
>tells us about an old man who lives in the dormitory who might of saw something
>go into the dormitory, get let inside the man's room
>he was strangled to death, find under the floor boards the body of a house spirit (a playable race who live in the walls and clean shit)
>the man had a sketch book, couldn't move much so mostly sketched the streets outside his window
>a bunch of pages are torn out
>one of the books is a holy text of a 'living saint'
>the living saint runs the largest brothel in the city
>we go there, have a chat with one of his employees (don't see the saint himself)
>she tells us the saint (she calls him Mr.Hall) doesn't prefer those curses when creating oracles
>she also tells us they have no recently created oracles registered in the church
>she doesn't know the guy, but one of the girls is named Evelyn
>we find out the guy's name is Issac, but the guy we found is WAY older than he should be
>also confirms the guy wasn't an oracle last time she saw him
>Issac has apparently been gone for a few weeks

>He was apparently trying to get employees at this place as an acolyte (it is half priesthood/half business)
>a frog man (another playable race) is going on outside and only let ships through that go to this building's docks
>out front is a soap box sermon by a guy in way too nice of clothing for the area (we guess he's from the other side of the river)
>find out Issac is a regular of these sermons
>head over to a gambling den called The Lucky Onion
>find out Issac has been living above it in one of the storage rooms
>he apparently worked there as a card dealer
>despite having disappeared a few weeks ago the proprietor saw him less than a week ago
>he lets us into Issac's room
>the place is ransacked, nothing really important is left behind
>we're pretty sure it was made to look like a robbery but they took specific stuff (books/documents maybe)
>find evidence that papers were burned in his stove
>one bit survived that survived that seem to be notes seemingly on some random philosophical musings addressed to Evelyn

So I'm not sure where to go from here, any thoughts? I might have left out details so I can answer more questions.

I actually like that as a concept. Nyarlathotep but without being a singular entity. Just some nebulous force of dickery and trickery, that delights in dangling hopes in front of people before they reach it, only to find it rotten and decaying, or simply gone.

Here's the image from a few threads ago for the /pfg/ setting.

People were still debating the time periods, but fake!1600s and not!1800s were requested.

I think both have good points, but the !1600s are good for limiting magic, since the techniques and materials for the high level stuff might not be readily available. The alternate!1800s do offer more things to use, thanks to trains and the like.

How would the other races react to such time periods?

Should Inpost the stories that got made?

>>
I like a man that's honest about his lying, but never lie about about being honest!
>>
>>54825665
As part of a setting, multiple campaigns can be set in it, thus the exact time period isn't necessary.

It's not about "what's the time period of our setting" in that case, it's about who develops what events during either time period.

I still have to go through the character options but the idea in my head was for him to be a soldier with the Outlaw theme. He's basically a do anything asshole mercenary who is actually quite jolly all things considered. He will occasionally ramble about his brother who he fought alongside but the story about his brother changes sometimes to random shit and he may or may not be fucked in the head by some kind of prior association that would be left to the GMs descretion.

Either that or have a dude who's a !Vincent (of Cowboy Bebop fame)

>>
>>54827401
It's horseshit, I'm just fucking with you. Take heavy armor proficiency if your dex isn't great. Weapon Focus, Deadly Aim, and Weapon Spec are always good if your weapon of choice allows them. Solarians probably get some of those for free. Some of them depend on ranged or melee, and I haven't looked at Solarians to know if they're stuck using one option or the other.

Heavy proficiency is good. Go with that.
>>
>>54827491
Ah ok. I've also heard step up or fleet are good, they better than heavy armor or should I prioritize that?
>>
On p. 317:
>Unlike rounds in combat between characters, a round of starship combat doesn't correlate to a specific amount of time.

>Some spaceship actions, such as entering drift, require set amounts of time, such as 1 minute

How the fuck is one even supposed to adjudicate this? Are Paizo being intentionally retarded?
>>
>>54827529
If you're in melee, Step Up is good. If you plan to eventually take Heavy Prof, Fleet is useless to you. I'd go Heavy, Mobility, Step Up. Mobility will help you not get shoved in a locker when you get close, and Step Up will stop them from getting away.
>>
>>54827536
I don't think you can enter the drift while in combat, so it probably doesn't matter. Unless I'm wrong, which I might be.
>>
>>54827559
Hmm. Ok that sounds good. Thanks!
>>
>>54827491
The math I've done on Deadly Aim suggests that with all the AC targets we have right now, even in the most advantageous situation, it reduces your damage output. You'd need an enemy who's so penalized you barely (or don't at all) lose accuracy from using it to make it worthwhile. Maybe specific targets with high DR might make it a good value proposition, but I wouldn't hold your breath.

Here you go:
>Following the War of the Five Hundred, and the destruction of all the land by the detonation of the Kobolbombe, the lands were forever cursed and warped. The dead rose from the earth, driven by a built in hate and desire for destruction, the earth became fetid and vile, twisting and warping into mockeries of itself, and those who survived nd teir descendants bore the mark of this curse. Their bodies became fragile and mutable, and soon many were born changed, bearing myriad and unnatural traits as if ripped from the animal world and melted into their forms as candlewax. The most horrendously mutated of these were known as the Fae, their very souls and essence forever changed by the fell magics that ended the war. Those who were borne only minor changes, and heir spirits and souls unmarred yet, became known as the Feykind. These Feykind are still weak, and their forms mutable from the curse of the cataclysm, yet they're appearance is oft only vaguely unnatural, bearing only minor and vestigial traits, such as changes to the shape of their eyes, ears, hands, as well as possibly other minor cosmetic mutations.

>These Feykind are oft as varied as the nations their ancestors once inhabited, with it even not being unheard of for a feykind child to bear traits completely dissimilar to their parents, and even for some of them to change or develop different traits all together as they age. Likewise the ways they adapt to the broken world in which they are borne is likewise different. Some seek to merely live their lives, dwelling in the shattered and crumbling ruins of their ancestors or perhaps even building a new life from scratch in the Twisted Wastes. Others still desire to leave the ancestors of their forbears, traveling to lands outside of the wastes with varying success. Yet many give in to their savagery and lust for power and dominion, becoming marauding warlords and despots, trying to cut out a claim for themselves in this broken world
>>
>>54827607
The penalty is pretty ass, and the scaling is pretty shit until later levels. I'm not sure how AC is going to look when the Archive drops. It isn't even Power Attack until 8th for full BABBIES, and if AC is at a premium, I can see it not being worth a damn. Can't say I've done the math though, so I'll default to your better judgment. Or I'll call you a liar and say something inflammatory. Whatever works.

When the War of the Five Hundred first began, the Magocracy of Kelendik decided to shut itself away from the destruction and bloodshed of their neighbors. They did this by erecting a great wall across their border, one of stone, iron, and magic, and expanded it with wards and and runes, protecting the whole of their peninsula from interference from the Warring Nations. At first, the wall merely existed to hold at bay the armies an conflicts, and its doors were held open for those seeking to flee their blood-embroiled homes. But as the conflict escalated, with no signs of stopping, with the flow of refugees becoming ever thicker, the gates of the wall were closed, and Kelendik closed itself off from the world, choosing to deal with its own problems and develop in isolation. As such it was how the wall ganed its moniker "The Stoic Range"

>To this day the Stoic Range stands firm, its magics stronger than ever, and its guards as keen-eyed and vigilant as since days past. Yet there are wispers and murmerings from beyond the Stoic Range. News of the conflicts and changes in the world outside of their aegis has began to trouble the Council of the Eye, with a few of their number believing it to soon be time to open themselves again to the world, lest they be left behind by it. Further, for the first time in ages, the Stoic Range has begun to open its gates to a small select number of individuals and travellers, mostly Feykind seekin to leave their homeland who have proven themselves worty of the honor after enduring many mysterious and trying challenges to be seen as worthy.
>What the future holds for Kelendik, its people, and the Council of the Eye is unknown, an is anyone's guess at this point.

A starship round is almost definitely the same or a shorter length than a normal round.

>generally, you can only take a move or standard action in a single round

I don't know why they fuck around with pretending it's vague. You can specifically use your entire crew turn doing less than you can do in an on-foot round, so it's something less than or equal to 6 seconds, which makes most of the non-combat things like entering the drift unusable.

the lights of the sea, the sky, and all the colorful garments of the Cetaceous People combined into a wonderful medley. It was a celebration about the founding of this outpost, and a fair number of the 'smaller' races had come to celebrate with them.

>A strong, sturdy outpost that they had built here had become a beacon of trade for many of the nearby countries, which could support all their cargo and their mass as their young folk danced along to the drums and their singing. A few of the more 'courageous' Humans would dance in the middle of their groups, while children many times their size danced around them to the beat. While their steps did not seem as delicate as those of the ballerinas from the land, they nonetheless never stepped on their guests.

>In the the orange evening, when the stronger drinks were brought out, they would spin tales of their deep sea dives, always keeping something at bay, but the details about what lies beneath the sea always managed to stop people. Scholars lined the corners, taking notes about possible new species and countries forgotten in the seas. Meanwhile, a few of the women would challenge themselves to dance and act with a Human friend on their shoulder, the more elaborate the spectacle that ends with the Human still on their massive friend, the louder the applause.

>I have done little to describe the rest of their outpost or what came through it, but I'll leave you with this. There were only about 30 of them at any time outside of their harvests, yet there outpost was almost as large the castle grounds, and they felt a little tight in there, that it didn't feel as spacious as some of their towns and cities under the sea. About those, that will wait for another time.

Alright, then I'll try

>The Sea of Serpents is the name given to the large inland sea positioned between the Twisted Wasteland and the Taarnstater, named as such for the vast numbers of eels, serpents, lampreys, and other serpentine creatures that dwell within it. While settlements along its banks make a living fishing and harvesting eels within the shallower waters, most dare not sail much farther out into the depths, for fear of becoming prey to the viscous bests of its depths. Many of the traditional ethnic Taarni who have dwelt along the banks since ancient times hold belief that a primordial deity dwells at the bottom of the inland sea, a fickle entity who is master of serpents known as the Dyben, who punishes mortals who prideful yet rewards those who are strong enough to slay the monsters it spawns. Hence why those with the strength to slain the dangerous nightmarish abominations that occasionally rise from the depths of the Sea of Serpents are often granted great respect, titles, and accolades from the people, and often end up rising to prominence and leadership amongst them.

>There are heretical murmurs by some as of late of those who wish to ride the lake of monsters and slaying the Dyben itself. Amongst such circles there has been circulating a legend stating that the once to slay the old God of the lake in single combat will be the one worthy of leading the Taarnstater to unity, and raising a great nation at the center of the Sea of Serpents. Most however do not take much stock in the legends of these heretics, and indeed many who live at the lake even doubt whether the Dyben truly dwells at the bottom of the Sea of Serpents, whether or not he does give birth to the writhing monsters that occasionally rise from the depths, or even if he truly exists.

>On the other end of the spectrum, there has been an increasing number of Dyben cultists coming to power on the side of the lake adjacent to the Twisted Wastes. The Feykind warlord, Jaelic the Immortal, rules a slice of the adjacent wasteland and the nearby waters from an abandoned keep, which he has turned into his own twisted Fortress Temple from which to spread his doomsday faith from. It is from here the Faith of the Bracken God reaches its tendrils into the nearby land and sea, and send out "chapel ships" to pillage, forcefully convert victims, and holds sacrificial rituals done in honor of their inscrutable god. Jaelic's followers are rabid, zealous, and often suicidal, being promised the honor of having their souls carried off to an antediluvian paradise deep at the bottom of the lake, with often times Jaelic promising his especially loyal and devout followers that he will himself "dive with them to Eternal Glory, reborn and emerald". IT is because of this, it is common for his disciples to bedeck themselves in emeralds, and othe green gems, while the lower ranking members often stain their faces and hands using a die harvested from a species of algae found on the coasts near the Twisted Wastes

>Jaelic himself is a serpentine Feykind, and while its possible that he was once more mundane looking, his body has changed over the years, becoming more mutated and altered, bearing many traits similar to that of a snake or an eel. Many Feykind have chosen to follow him seeking a means of increasing their power and bestial aspects in the same way he has, often leading to his Feykind followers gradually becoming twisted abominations. Among such followers of his are his Ophidian Brides, female followers who's lower bodies have changed to that of snakes, who often serve as his loyal spies, enforcers, and concubines.

We were tomb robbing and had disturbed a mummy, which we could totally have dealt with...
Except one character decides to cast darkness for, as best I can tell, shits and giggles, turning the battlefield into confusion and panick.
Thankfully everyone made it out but my character, and whilst I was sad I didn't get to take that character's story where I'd been planning to take it, I hadn't really gotten to start enacting those plans, so it wasn't the worst, but still, what the heck man?

Far as I can tell, nothing but cowardice. We'd been fighting the empire those riders worked for and got ambushed in a town where a MacGuffin was (not "surprise round", just unavoidable combat due to a couple bad choices letting them track us down). Like I said, even took the GM off guard.

Excerpts from "The Roots of Magic" penned by Lord Jeh'reg'ta of the Council of the Eye

>"Though the nature of magic is disputed often times by various traditions and practices, and its origins are likwise a common subject of theological debate, there are two well known and nearly irrefutable facts about magic: One, that in its raw state direct exposure can be dangerous, and even lethal in large enough ammounts. Second, that the Eternity Trees exist to ensure that the veil of magic remains stable and doesn't tear the land apart. Please note that I said Trees, as in plural"

>"While most of my fellow Klendi are probably only familiar with is Ashvara the Protector, the center of our nation which all of the Council of the Eye bind themselves to when they take office, it should be noted that it is not the only one. According to ancient writings, and through dscussions with Ashvara itself through the mental link she provides, there indeed seems to be a total of 20 Eternity Trees that exist, spread across the world, which all aid in holding the world together. It is toether they syphon the raw Apeiron of the cosmos, shield us from its direct touch, and use it to nurture the world, holding it together both physically and metaphysically. How these trees do so is actually quite fascinating, and before accepting my position and duty on the Council of the Eye is a field that I had once dedicated my whole life to study. Each of the Eternal Trees represents a specific concept or aspect of existance, and as it absorbs the raw magic of the outer realms, it converts it into gentler energy and essence and distributes it into the world from its roots, which exist both physically, yet at the same time immaterially, which stretch and twist across the world like a great weave or basket. My theory, while yet to be substantiated, is that the emanations of life and energy from these roots, that us mortals draw upon to create our varrying forms of magic.

>"While these claims are yet to have any evidence, as previously stated, I feel that there are some correlations to be seen that can't be controlled. It is well known that during the War of Five Thousand, that many of the most dangerous weapons were forged from barbaric practices that involved cannibalizing and exploiting the World Tree Nothorog, including the infamous Kobolbombe which destroyed the 500 Kingdoms. Following the activation of said device, it is known that Nothorog was heavily damaged and infirmed, and was left in a weakened and damaged state. It was well documented by various mystics across the land at the time that te power of their own magic was left reduced and weakened, especially those who practiced Thanotopic magic who's powers were greatly reduced. Further it was documented that it was around the same time that the first of what would later be known as the "undead" were soon encountered, spreading and appearing as if spreding from the area from which the Eternal Tree of Death was.

>"My current theory is that following the damage of caused by the war and the Kobolbombe, Nothorog was left in such a damaged state that the other Eternal Trees had to help convert some of their own energy to bolster their ailing sibling, who in turn created the undead to act as possibly both a defensive mechanism, and as a means to take revenge at the mortals who damaged her so greatly to begin with. It was the later that the first Necromancers arose, findig a way to exploit the energy and newly implemented systems of the ailing Nothorog for their selfish benefit.

>"If this fluctuation has any correlation to the birth and proliferation of the Fey and Feykind, it is currently unknown by what mechanism it occurred, as such mutations are generally not seen as the purview of Nothorog

So archetypes are now a sort of optional second class?
That is interesting.

Also: A lot of mechanics seem to be class specific, such as full attacks, spells, etc. This is nice, because some of the pathfinder classes are exceptions to the rules more than they follow them.

I'm hoping there is reasons in combat to not just stand still and full attack with a big lazor gun.

Also:
>verstile focus/specialization
This is a huge break form the norm for pazio. +1 damage with a longsword AND a shortsword is huge.

And of course, it costs a feat. Funny. But still: I'm a little excited. It might actually be worth it due to the energy/physical ac thing.

By the way: Having the soldier have magic in the class description is a huge break from the muggles=/=magic ideas.

>"As the preeminant expert of the study of the Eternal Trees, one inqery that has been asked of me is regarding the nature on the relationship between he Eternal Trees and dragons. As you know, every 20 years he Eternal Trees undergo the formation and display of their breathtaking Decadiel Blooms, from which soon arise great clowds of the wonderfully iridescent Drakeflies. For one week, these beautiful creautes fill the air around the tree, engaging in cannibalistic displays as they partake of their first ever meals by consuming the flesh of their siblings. After this week, the surviving Drakeflies will fly many miles away from their parent tree to find a new home to settle. Once they do, their location and diet will determine what manner of creature they will develop into, usually as some manner of drake or other lesser draconid.

>"However on rare occurences that usally happen only once every 200-500 years, during a particular Decadial bloom, there will be a particularly fit, able, and voracious drakefly, who will consume and devour considerably more of its siblings than is normal. Being so engorged and drunken of the flesh of its kin, rather than flying straight away, it will instead return and roost for a time in its parent tree, slowly digesting its prey whilst also supping directly from the tree itself. Afteral a month of this resting and nursing from its forbear, it will then leave the nest, having grown to roughly the size of a Klereesian kestral, and fly away for miles from its parent tree. It will then grow and develop as usual for a Drakefly, however, the sutanance from eating most of its kin and supping from its progenitor creates a different change. It grows faster, stronger, and smarter than the rest of its kin, and develops a more potent innate magcal capability (often similar to the magic of the Eternal Tree from which it was spawned), and instead grows and develops into what is known as a True Dragon.

Its a start
>>
>>54831137
further: "automaic mode" gives all muggles cone attacks with guns. Some of these cones are downright huge. I'm worried that having more guys and going first with tons of cone attacks, extra weapons, and quick draw to "reload" will just be the "correct" way to do combat.
>>
>>54831193
further: Jesus fucking christ these tables. If you though that pathfinder had options for weapons...

Then again most of these are just "the lower level version, but different". I expect someone to make a formula to "auto-level-up" some weapons, to reduce these fuckhuge tables to liek 4 or 5 types, with the added variable of "what level".

I'm not sure if you can't use weapons above your level. If yes, that's dumb.

>>
>>54831511

And the difference between a GM deciding when you find a certain caliber of laser gun and a GM deciding when you find a magic sword in any other system is...?
>>
>>54831566

Not sure if this is b8 or not, but I'm biting anyway.
Your DM runs the game to his/her standards.
If he wants you to have higher leveled weapons at lower levels, then you'll have them. Please, present some objectively bad things about the topic at hand, that aren't "when I do something I want it to be like this"
>>
>>54831673
It's that it doesn't scale with level, I think. If it scaled automatically, there would be no concerns of inappropriately powerful or weak weapons at a given level of play. As it stands, there may be variance. I don't find it a huge issue, but I can understand not wanting such a large chunk of damage potential to be external instead of a internal to your character's level. If that makes sense?

I'm not BP, so I don't know for sure.
>>
>>54831715

That still doesn't explain why it's apparently "worse" that the GM decides when you get a more powerful laser gun than when the GM decides when you get a more powerful magic sword.

I don't give two shits about what's "optimized", I want to cyborg myself out as far as I can. What would be the best way to be a heavily armed, heavily armored cyborg tank? I want to use big weapons, wear heavy armor (although I'm not that jazzed about power armor), and be borged to hell in back.
>>
>>54831748
The magical sword generally is less important. Most of your damage in Pathfinder usually comes from Class Features and Feats. Most of your damage in Starfinder comes from better weapons, though iteratives from Class Features go a long way to increase this, but 3 attacks at 1d8+30 are still much weaker than 3 at 20d6+30. It feels a bit jarring that a level 20 weapon can increase your damage output so drastically, even if you're level 1. It all comes down to trusting your GM not to be an idiot, though. It's just trusting them with a bit more, I guess. Some people don't like that shifting of perceived control.

Once again, I could be totally wrong here.
