Paizo Games General /pgg/ (also /pfg/)

Why does the Starfinder CRB have such bad editing and contradictory rules? Did this get no editing passes?

Because Paizo are dumb.

Evidently.

The CRB is where the writing needs to be the ABSOLUTE TIGHTEST out of all books you can release, and they fucked it up, just like whoever keeps making threads keeps leaving starfinder stuff here when it's got enough material for its own thread.

Didn't we establish years ago that Paizo have no idea how to play their own game?

I'd say the feats that they translated from Pathfinder to Starfinder are better than the Pathfinder variants, and a lot of feats are pretty good. It's just it's a 3.5e variant, so a lot of shitty feats is standard.

Because he just used it as-is from the monster manual. An incorporeal creature when the party mostly has a bunch of ARs and a an LMG is not fun. Magic in D20 Modern topped out at 5th-level spells. I had levels in Mindblade, which was the soulknife equivalent except even weaker and thus was the only person that could damage the thing...for one attack per round.

They're going to be investigating/fighting a cult that uses strange, unknown magic. My intent was to use the Binder because I love the shit out of that class, but I've only got one player that even knows about the class, much less the book it's from. Blade Runner is another great movie about androids, if you've never seen it.
>>
>>54771353
A while back I was pondering what a copper/silver/gold currency would progress to once it went modern/scifi.

And it occurred to me. It doesn't necessarily even need to change.

I mean gold's not even commonly used in business transactions anyway. So what's the step down? Silver. Then people's credit cards would be silver. Or gold if you're some bigshot moneyed fucko

It's funny how it works out. $ is for $ilver. ¢ is for ¢opper. And there'd presumably be a similar one for gold, but it and possibly copper have deprecated due to everyone just using $ilver now. Y'know, sort of like how the japanese Yen is actually the highest denomination of currency, but it's depreciated to the point that nobody uses Sen (100th of a yen) or Rin (10th of a Sen) anymore.

So in answer to the question, just call it Silver.

I read the post. And I've read Hearth & Blade's feat tax rules. Are those the actual feat tax rules you're using? I'd concede that it doesn't go far enough in some respects or at least doesn't have the necessary breadth, but even then you should save several feats. It depends at what level you're trying to get everything going, but by 5th level or so, there's no reason you shouldn't be proficient in all three of those things, without a particular specialty yet.

But then, the real problem with grappling and tripping and intimidation aren't the feats to make them function; it's that no number of feats will make them work against a vast array of enemies. That's a much bigger system problem.
>>
>>54772547
What about a discussion on the systems of governance in fantasy or sci-fi? I'll start with a question then.

Do you think we could feasibly have an absolute monarchy in a space age sci-fi setting, especially one that has seen democracy before and has fast means of communication and information access?

Only if said Monarchy had th means, intellect, and capability to properly run a intergalactic government for a long period of time, meaning the only way it could work would be through some kind of expansive God-Machine King capable of having perfect understanding of all aspects and districts of its nation, and is morally neutral and detached enough that it would actually be able to act and control a centrally powered government.

Such a being would ultimately be inhuman in terms of comprehension and scope of mind, which may create some contention in being ruled by it, as well as making i dificult to properly create, as any such entity would have to not be born of mortal hands in any degree of its creation, less it be affected by the imperfection of mortal design, intent, and understanding

It's saving quite a few feats, but there's still a lot of things that get choked on. Perhaps that's mostly a function of me having too high expectations and not dialing back down since every time someone says "Oh you're doing X thing? Take THESE feats!". IE: A grappler NEEDS all these other things in addition to Greater Grappler, and Intimidator NEEDS these five feats, a tripper NEEDS these other feats. I guess given how I automatically get everything I need to properly be a 2H fighter I shouldn't worry about effectiveness, it's just frustrating.

It doesn't help that I have <13 Dex, and therefore HAVE to take dirty fighting to qualify for feats even with Combat Stamina, and need like, 3 other feats to cover my ass on certain things via AWT's.

>which celebs do you think will get the spots?
That depends entirely on who runs the game, since celebs aren't universal like the thread pretends, but rather members of distinct cliques that shill for one another.

If it's run by one of the discord fags, you'll get people like Wist, IKiD, Protag and Kawase felating one another over how great and unique these boilerplate characters are. If it's one of the RotJR whores Slow, Disk, Sappy and Sleep will be tripping over each other to scream about how well written their characters are. If Vult is running it you'll get nothing but "confirmed" female players lining up for a shitty rape game. If Rory runs it, it'll be a bamboozle.

You clearly haven't played many games with children. A lot of the time, they're more serious than teenagers, who tend to focus on jokes, sex, and similarly "amusing" things. A kid of nine years old is primarily influenced on fantasy by Disney films and any books their parents have given to them.

Keep adult themes out of the game, but otherwise run normally and you should be fine.

Well, having looked at the Mentalist Handbook, I must says its actually kinda okay, even if their crappy editing caused the new PrC to be trash.

Also, Embodiment is a really cool Boon, and could allow for some interesting builds and concepts. Like a Dwavern cleric who is on all levels except the physical a rock. Also, Virtuoso is now just about mandatory for every Skilled Caster build.

There's also some talents and options for less-mindrapy mind powers if you're someone like me who normally finds mind-control magic to be amoral and reprehensible

MAD is definitely a problem with combat feats, that's true.

As for all those different recommendations, those are all for different characters specializing in different things. If you want to specialize in any one of those things, that's fine, but if you want to be able to do all three in some capacity, what you "need" to do to make your build feel cohesive is find ways tie them all together.

Your niche is definitely going to be humanoid enemies, there's no way around that. Investing even a little into nonlethal options can go a long way, and it's easy to do with grappling and tripping. The Enforcer feat will let you intimidate as a free action whenever you deal nonlethal damage, making it something you're likely to do constantly. Now even if you aren't specialized in intimidating, you waste no actions with demoralizing; it's just something you do while pummeling enemies.

Honestly, the advice to watch some Disney movies is a good one.

Focus on bringing out the positive aspects of the characters, rather than causing them to suffer. Even the more morally complex fairy tales are still, at their core, about a heroic person doing something heroic, aided by some virtue.

>>
>>54774039
High-level heroes shooting down fighters or figuring out a clever way to take down a gunship isn't unheard of in fiction.
>>
>>54773935
Oh totally.

I love running for kids; if they have the attention span for it, they're fantastic players.
>>
>>54774039
Realistically (I know, I know), a spaceship CAN'T aim at people. Unless you have independently motorized and self aiming gun systems, ships are simply too big an object to aim at something as small as a person with any degree of accuracy. It would be like aiming a tank at a person, except the turret would be fixed in a single position instead of mobile. By the time you have the shot, they've left.

Also, remember objects take half fdamage from energy and hardness cannot be bypassed without a lot of weird shit.
>>
>>54774087
Point defense weapons do exist though. It's not hard for them to make the leap to space
>>
>>54773863
Well, now I feel silly. I have that saved as "Table of Contents" because there's no actual page numbers at the bottom.
>>
>>54774052
The issue here is that it is pathetically easy to destroy objects.

Also, apparently, shooting something the size of a large missile from fifty feet away with weapons accurate enough to do the same 20 hexes away for a high level hero IS unheard of in fiction if the hero's a mere pilot.

The character is for Ironfang Invasion, so I sort of ASSUMED that humanoids would be common enough as to make it worthwhile. At this point I'm just compiling lists of relevant feats in each category, though. Enforcer was in there, but trying to consistently do nonlethal is dubious, as the intent was to mostly fight with Heavy Blades, then abuse the old version of Lore Warden for its fat CMB to keep my options open so I can go from "kill the dude" to something like "slam the dude face-first into the dirt and call him a pussy shit". Kinda wish the trait for dealing nonlethal with bladed weapons wasn't Sarenrae-only, despite the trait for SCIMITARS being a general combat trait for some asinine reason.

Offhand, would be an (Old Lore Warden) Fighter gestalted with a (Sanctified Slayer/Ravener Hunter) Inquisitor, where Ravener Hunter actually converts Inquisitor to be Cha-based. I guess I could just be a Sarenraenite for the trait, it's not like my group has the stigma /pfg/ has for her.

Easily.

Monarchy solves three major problems in democracy. It speeds up short-term decision making and has a longer POV for long-term planning. Also, because they actually own the government, the people in power see the nation as capital to be hoarded and upgraded instead of consumable resources that need to be expended before term limits hit.

In addition to this, in a fantasy setting it's much more conceivable that a single person, at some point, got personally powerful enough to carve out a kingdom. Assuming the kingdom was successful under their rule, the descendants inherit both personal power and position. Give it a few good monarchs and even one or two bad ones won't break the chain.

Much bigger problem that I can see:

Those weapons can't be upgraded. Defenses can get better with BP and PCU, but weapons can't. You're also highly restricted mount-wise (two lights, even after upgrades, on anything below medium for example) unless you go big.

The APL system and upgrade rules lock out doing something like a squadron of pilots right from start to finish, and even for large vessels, as levels go up, fights will get increasingly long as HP, shields and defenses go up, but weapon damage stays the same. That also means slower crit production too.

I asked a while back, but how does a Brutal Slayer's Muscle Memory interact with his CMD? Oracle's Cha-to-AC set the precedent for Dex replacers to also affect CMD, but you wouldn't be adding your Str mod twice, right? You'd be just adding Strength and then treat the "other modifier" as +0? Or is this some bizarro case like where there are people insisting an Oracle/Scaled Fist monk multiclass can "totally apply Cha-to-AC twice"?

Actually, upon further inspection, I have realized I misread the Oracle revelations and have in fact answered my own question. Two of the revelations (the ones for Lore and Lunar) add Cha-to-AC and Reflex (with a FAQ on Lore specifically denying CMD), but Nature's revelation meanwhile adds Cha-to-AC and CMD (but NOT reflex). I find myself left disappointed, yet like I really should have seen this garbage coming a mile away. While my GM would probably say "yea fuck that noise it works for all three", the fact that that's not how it works by default leaves me disappointed.

Can't you enchant or fusion them at least? surely there's going to be feats or something too. I mean for 20 PCU and 10BP you can upgrade shields from 80 to 200. Even at low levels you get 20 or 30 build points per tier. There's no size limit there either so those are going to be some tough as fuck shuttles.

What about going around things with the antipersonnel mount? They clearly stated you can shoot a ship as though it were an object, so the AP mount which is apparently completely controllable as to what it picks and aims at should be able to aim that way manually right? Heavy weapons at high tier, even with the "it's an object here's hardness" penalty are probably going to do a better job in which case you can relegate your mounts to nuclear missiles.

Alright-

I'm recruiting for a text-only Starfinder oneshot (hopefully only one session) to be played through Roll20 next week, 6pm Tuesday EST. There's a small amount of wiggle-room on starting day and time.

Those interested, please reply with your roll20 profiles or go to the discord below and the 'session-beta' channel to chat.

discord.gg/YAk263j

Please note I haven't used Roll20 for three years and SF is a new system, so things could be a bit rocky, but I think a session can still go well and we can have some fun.

I'm expecting some interested parties to decline due to the starting time or not being able to build a sheet by game start, so I'm inviting everyone who sends me their profile name, and after some talk I'll work out who's in.

Gentlemen, I've decided I'll be running a Hell's Rebels game for my friends. It will be my first time GMing, though I've been a player and theorycrafter for a good while now, so hopefully I'll do okay with a Publish AP. I also know HR is infamously shiftily written and retarded, so I'm going to take a long and hard look at it and change things around as needed, as well as giving NPCs some reworks with 3pp content since that's what most people in the group are used to using now.

So, do y'all have any advice for a 1st time GM? Perhaps some advice maybe for running this AP in particular? I'm honestly kinda nervous and am unsure if I'll even be any good at GMing.

Without anyone catching on? Almost impossible. That said, you have very good taste in manga, so running a game with these sorts of themes in mind would be pretty cool if you, say, mixed it with a very Konosuba-esque setting where everyone is a super weirdo.

So Paizo has expressed interest in making it possible for as many non-humanoid species as possible to be playable, am I the only one that hopes that this could mean the first instance of officially supported Dragon PC chargen?
>>
>>54776091
Please god no. Vorefags and furries can go elsewhere.
>>
>>54776091
That's bottom of the barrel for the possibilities you should be thinking of. You could be an AI in any kind of thing. A ship AI is nearly a staple of the genre, for instance - why not play that? And you send out largely disposable cargo-handler machines to join the party where you can't reach.
>>
>>54776109
Literally what do vorefags have to do with this? Furries I'll half grant you but even then Dragons are popular with literally everyone, but I think it says more about your priorities than anyone else's that that's immediately where your mind went.

it's not so glaring at level 1, we had a soldier, technomancer, and mechanic. And I got to be party face.

it was pretty fun, we were all in a detention facility and escaped during a Swarm attack.

We're now running for our life in a stolen ship with a not-zerg swarm behind us, and the mechanic is helping me craft a blaster/guitar hybrid weapon.

You can play a kineticist and think it's fine based on anecdotal luck.

Fellow low-tier class! You should join us. We'll have mediocre spess adventures together

>>54776255
its not a secret the envoy is a weak class, but the world doesn't end if somebody plays one
>>
>>54776255
You say that but certain builds of kineticist can be very good at defensive capabilities (which despite the memes a good defense isn't always just running up and killing the enemy dead with 500 damage when you're in a real combat scenario) as well as providing decent utility with things like their "I can lift hundreds of pounds of raw material, thousands if I accept a point of burn" ability.

Of course, none of that means that they're a super strong class, but it's not luck to say that they can be anecdotally useful.

I believe you misunderstand, they can fire back, but they just create a zone of death. Also they deal 10x damage so the cheapest ship weapon does 20d4 damage in an area. Also because they deal 10x damage that means their health and shields would be 10x the listed amount and have hardness. Sure you could sabotage a ship with explosives or something if you're sneaky, but remember that ships can have defence systems and AI.

>>54774575
You can link weapons together to fire with one action, so the damage keeps up fine. Also the math for Attack vs AC or TC means you should almost always hit at higher levels. Listed below in building encounters for starship combat there is a section which explicitly allows you to have a squadron of fighters. You could balance it(based on the rules) by having everyone have their own ship with an APL of their character level-1 tier for each ship past the first(so 4 level 1 characters would each have tier 1/4 ships). This doesn't work at higher levels though unless you have two people in a medium or larger vessel and the others in fighters because of the fact that you cannot mount heavy weapons on small vessels. Though if you have a ship with capital weapons and some fighters you will destroy a medium ship if they don't run(as it should be)
You could remedy this problem with a simple rule: Ships two sizes smaller may occupy the same hex as a ship, and if they do so the larger ship may only target that ship with light weapons that are mounted on a turret as no other weapon can maneuver with enough speed to get a shot. Hopefully they'll add something like that later on as a stunt or feat, if they do then everything will be great.
