SoH are toppest tier, spraycan-related shenanigans are the leading cause of death for converted miniatures, Aquilon Terminators are still not allowed and Black Legion is soon dropping. All this and more, in the last (surprisingly decent) thread >>54664572.

I generally avoid reaving and go for long march. Take Mal to make your reavers troops, and Horus or abaddon for DSing termies. I don't massively rate reavers myself, but thats because my local has little for them to prey on.

Finally got some FW renegade militia conversion sets, some cadians and a chimera. I'm going to use a paint scheme based on Vraks. Do you think I'll be able to use them together with my Horus Heresy Word Bearers as the cultists that fought on Calth?
>>
>>54730556
Yeah, this is what I was doing for the past year or so, I changed it up on Friday and was pleasantly surprised. This was the first time I've used Reavers in a while, I'd never really had them work out for me because of how expensive upgrades made them. I think the bolters are really tempting but 5 ppm is just too much, even with Banestrike and Assassin's Eye.
>>
>>54731024
Don't see why not, said cultist would be fairly chaos-y anyways. Plus the renegades militia has some pretty cool model stuff, personally really like the Ogryns

House Malinax reporting, we decided to gatecrash the muster. Treides will get his scions if he can fit them on his ship.

This kit has been a bit of a pain, honestly. The neck attachment point didn't cast properly, so had to superglue the head and cowl in place, thanks to a momentary lapse of judgement the Gatling magnet is in the wrong way round and thus tends to pop off the arm occasionally and the cannon body has enough greenstuff in to hold the magnet up that it's not the best joint. Nothing actually preventing the model's completion, just a few annoying flaws.

Fitting for Scion Aspirant Selket, I guess, but I'll endeavour to get her lancemates done better.
>>
>>54735483
Have you considered painting from the pot using paints meant for airbrushing, applied with large-ish brushes that don't taper to too fine a point? It's what I do, and when they wear down you can just keep using them.

Make sure to strip your minis if you repaint them though, an overnight soak of simple green works wonders and you ca leave them in indefinitely. If you (like me) live in Sweden grönsåpa is the stuff you want.
>>
>>54735833
hmm thats an idea, I might try that in the future, thanks!

I doubt I'll be able to face repainting the one's I've already completed though, my pace is already so slow thats going to take me a long while to finish.

Maybe once I'm finally done and the difference (if there is one) bothers me.
>>
>>54736074
I used to paint really thickly before doing this; you can trust me when I say that the difference is pretty startling.

What paint scheme do you use? From the pics it looks like you paint the yellow, give it a light drybrush of beige, wash it/wash the recesses and slap on metal, black, brown etc where needed.

Actually, looking on the minis it looks like the heat coils on the plasma blaster and powered bits on the lightning claws could use some more colour. I'd recommend using a fairly vivid colour that clashes with the yellow, and highlight the edges with a lighter version of that colour/white. Takes only a little work (in my experience most of it is layering the base layer evenly with good coverage) but looks pretty decent, especially from a distance.

Doing bases is pretty easy, give them a thinnish, spread out layer of one of GWs basing colours, drybrush it or paint it another colour before drybrushing that, and give it a wash.

Wew. Everything above is obviously just my opinion, and is basically what I do to get a decent tabletop standard.
>>
>all these badly painted armies

I thought HH was for old grognards with excellent painting skills.
>>
>>54736340
Yup, that is pretty much exactly my painting process at the moment, base of averland sunset, highlight yriel yellow and then wash seraphim sepia.

thanks for the tips for the bases and plasma, they're much appreciated. I'll give them a go.

The armies look fine.

>>54736564
Consider adding Badab Black to the recesses with a fine paintbrush to really make them pop. It might be the light, but the yellow areas look a bit flat to me. Also maybe use a brighter red like Mephiston for the eyes?

Be sure to post photos of your New and Improved Fists when/if you paint some more/repaint your old guys.

If thinning paints truly isn't working out for you, try switching paint brands. Vallejo, for instance, has several ranges of pre-thinned paints that are great for people like you and me who struggle to use the GW paints.

Here's how I would do Imperial Fists:
Zenithal Prime from Black to White
Some kind of brown-red basecoat - think P3 Bloodstone
A mixed basecoat of the same brown-red color and a mild yellow like P3 Moldy Ochre.
Highlight with a lighter yellow, like P3 Sulfuric Yellow
Wash with a sepia tone and a yellow.
Line highlight with yellow and white

This is how I did pic attached.

The lethal combination of FW killing their own game alongside GW proper's shift to primaris makes me fear that the answer to that is 'never'. I despair at it, because some plastic MkV and MkII would be lovely. All the more so if GW did them in 5 model kits including normal and jump packs as well as both bolters and CCWs, rather than just as two new varieties of tac squad.

I know what you mean. FW gutted the HH by not even updating the rules yet, and of course keeping said rules in 7th did them no good. I wanna have some faith in that GW isn't phasing out the regular marine line in place of Primaris. And I sort of feel like with the idea they have of new codex every year and constant updates, I do see them actually (assuming they follow through) trying to fix what was wrong.

Funny to think though, if HH ever did get a proper port to 8th (I know there is a fan one out there but he's making a lot of the units worse in terms of cost and shit, tacticals are like 170 points for 10 and Praetors are still useless)

But on a slightly different note, I'm happy for Primaris being mkIV styled which will make for easy conversions for scaling up marines and the fact that things like heads and shoulders are compatible with regular marines

Haven't been there in a long while, but here's a question: I got both Betrayal at Calth and Burning of Prospero, with the intention of using them as a starting point for 30k armies. Now, after trading a few sprues with a buddy at the LGS, I found out I have enough leftovers to make two armies. My main one was always going to be IW, going with an army theme of trench warfare (heavily spalled armor plates, muddy bases, repaired weapons and armor, lots of heavy choices), but I'm still a bit torn about the second army. I've got a good amount of Custodes to go along with two MKIV teams, a Contemptor and a praetor in artificer. Due to the high concentration of Custards, I was thinking of a loyalist legion, possibly IX legion since I like to paint red and never had the occasion to do a whole army in that color, but I'm really undecided. I think the biggest turnoff for me would be if Blood Babbies turned out to rely heavily on jetpacks (like their first RoB suggests), because while It'd be fun to convert assault troops from tacticals, I'd rather start working on them soon, and >>Angelus never ever. Alternatively, I'm interested by anything which could be themed after history, like knightly Dark Angels or roman Ultrasmurfs, which frankly I'm not as disgusted by as I am by their 40k counterpart.

TL;DR Guide a bitterboy's choice for a small loyalist legion army which would not look bad along Custodes.

BA don't need Jump packs to be effective, they just make hell of a lot of use of them. The thing your infantry blobs get best use of is probably additional CCWs (if you can't be arsed sourcing pistol and combat weapon arms as base weapons), what with the +1 to wound and all. Obviously this is failing the plan to start an assault cannon heavy support squad of BRRRT.

If you want to incorporate the Custodes and Sisters into a loyalist army, one of the legions at Terra is the way to go. You want to paint red, so the choice is obvious. Jump packs aren't necessary when you're defending a wall.

The BA rite of war with the defending-a-wall theme is rare because it isn't spectacular, but you know what? Neither are assault marines, even with a RoW boost. You can always run Primarch's Chosen (once Sanguinius is out) or Armored Breakthrough instead. They don't disallow allied detachments, iirc, and are pretty good.

If you aren't explicitly defending, put your tactical squads in Rhinos with pintle-mounted heavy flamers (which get replaced with... assault cannons!). Blood Angels also do well with attack bikes (assault cannons!), Predators (assault cannons!), and they like Tartaros Terminators in a Spartan or Kharybdis.

>>
>>54749135
>So more subtle strength rather than direct force?
They're flexible; their units with LA:AL get to pick from a few special rules at the start of a game, similar to the way veterans do. I think it's a little more challenging to make good use of that.
>>
>>54749135
Exactly. Their Legion rules mean your games will depend on careful planning of your list (depending on whether you want to try out insane combos of Legion-specific units or not) and in general lend themselves very well to a careful sort of approach.

You are Alpharius.

Be careful with deployment, and pick your opponent apart piecemeal. Keep in mind that you're unlikely to dominate your enemy if you play to their strengths. You can't out-endure IH or DG. You can't outshoot IW or SoH. You certainly can't outfight SW, BA, DA, NL or EC.

But you CAN catch them unawares, force them to play your game with your rules. And that is how you win, more so than any Legion I can think of with the possible exception of EC who also require a certain finesse when playing, what with their circumstantial rules and expensive (but potentially devastating) unique units. your units are worse but you can have any you want, so the problem is moot.

>>
>>54749455
That's... incredibly unimaginative.

Pride of the Legion to use Veterans as troops, give them Weaponmasters and power weapons, give the army infiltrate, scout or counterattack, and outfight almost anything in the game.

Infiltrating melta support squads.

Tankhunting Jetbikes.

Fuck me but it makes me genuinely upset when people just use tired old things like Spartanstars. Footslog your Terminators and spend the Spartanpoints on something that will retaliate while the enemy shreds your terminators. Et cetera.

>>54749588
They are a close-quarters Legion, but not necessarily melee. Death Dealers gives them effective BS5 if anything other than heavy weapons (I think) is within 12", and Merciless Fighters give models that have already fought 1 extra attack at the last initiative step, so you see where their reputation for bringing Veteran Squads with combi-weapons comes from.
>>
>>54749560

Any luck with prying Black Legion from iPad, anons?
>>
>>54749560
They're not bad. Probably not top-tier, because their rules are among the older ones and there's some power creep in this game - but they'll definitely get revisited as we get to the Solar War, so that's just temporary.

They get a BS bonus if using bolter-type weapons, so they like a gunline. They're also one of the very few legions that can teleport their Terminators in 30k. Their special units are too expensive (pretty common in 30k) but they have a rite of war that makes Breachers (also too expensive) decent. If you like the look of bolters and shields, they're the legion for you.

One of the hosts of the Eye of Horus podcast (Michael) runs them. Maybe send them an email asking for advice.

https://1d4chan.org/wiki/Warhammer_40,000/Tactics/Space_Marine_Legion_List_(30k)
>>
>>54750553
Night Lords are sneaky fast bullies with drop pods, jump packs and prefer stabbing things.
They get their main bonus from outnumbering the enemy, so they skirt around and whittle down larger enemy units until they can bully them with a big pack.
Their Primarch is also fucking TERRIFYING in a literal sense, if he manages to get the drop on an enemy unit in the middle of a battle line he can make half of the enemy break straight up and run away.
Both the Primarch and the Legion are vulnerable to vehicle-heavy builds or non-Legion armies that have either huge hordes or majority immunity to fear/Ignore Cover. Or both, in the case of Ordo Reductor being angry.

Alpha Legion have been discussed a little way up this thread. Other than what's already been said, they have way less trouble with Mechanicum/Custodes if Alpharius is present because he can instakill all their big boys, although if the Mech manage to turn the game into a shooting match they're going to crumble. Play to whatever your opponent is NOT good at, you get a stupid level of flexibility to accomplish that.

Thousand Sons are complicated but are perhaps the single most overpowered Legion in the game if they try to be. I would read their tacticia on 1d4chan to get a grounding, but Magnus can pretty much instantly wipe twice his points off the board with psychic bullshit and is generally massively undercosted. Use with caution if you like having friends.

Molecular Acid is your new God now.

Ironfire bombardment is memey, but The Hammer of Olympia allows for an interesting siege assault force with the extra heavy support and ability to rapid fire and disordered charge.
>White Scars
Made of fast.
>Space Wolves
Surprisingly fast infantry horde nasty on the assault and while being assaulted. Disappointing Terminators.

Nice balance of firepower and melee, unfortunately both Fist Players I have faced have relied on thier gunlines and payed for it.
>Night Lords
Nasty if you use plenty of terror squads and thier rite of war. Not so great if you are dealing with massed augery scanners.

Can have a silly number of assault cannons. Otherwise really good at melee
>Iron Hands
Probably the most resilient in the face of enemy shooting. Really good with tanks and robots, not so much to speak about in regards to melee.

Some decent unique units (fulmentarii aside because insane cost). And the beginning of AP2 at initiative on masse.

>Sons of Horus
Nasty mix of Melee, Shooting and reserve manipulation, but thier abilities stack up for point blank murder, so suffer against more generalist ranged forces if they can't close properly.

>Salamanders
Good at starting fires, nasty pushed close because of that.

>>
>>54751354
30 vs 15 bodies if I remember the storm Lords capacity correctly. That and reavers then would have more attacks. And it's overkill.
You could use terminators if you wanted to, but I like the idea of 30 reavers making a break from it to charge down some poor squad
>>
>>54751151
Wow, the goodest of good guys vs. their total opposite.

Firedrakes are among the best units in the game, and Vulkan's great too. Cassian Dracos has a great story, and they can ally with quite a few factions.

Night Lords are a good choice if you want to run bikes as a traitor legion, and they're great with the Sacrificial Offering rite of war (where you use militia units as bait and the legionnaires come in from reserve). Also good for mass volkite.
>>
Want to start a Taghmata army and I've got about 80 quid to play with this month; do I get some Thallax and a Domitar or some Tech-Thralls and a Castellax to form a core of the army?
>>
>>54751480
40 and 20, but I accept your reasoning. Maybe a compromise. 10 Terminators (Justaerin) and 15 Reavers? Then space for characters, would that make the Warmaster proud?

I don't think so, outside of just looking at Knight Houses on the wiki. House Atrax is always cool and House Malinax has transfers and a suitable scheme, I suppose. I think most people either paint one of the Codex Houses or make their own custom, I haven't seen an Atrax Knniggit at any point.

Lheor really made ToH for me.
>>
>>54757423

I liked it a lot. I don't think it was quite worth the long wait, but I had overhyped it too much.

Abby vs Siggy was good though.

The Black Legion fighting Black Templars for the first time was pretty funny.

As ADB put it about three years ago: "Who are these black-clad, angrier Imperial Fists who are so great at one-on-one duels and why are they beating our heads in? It's like Sigismund's elite warriors became a whole Chapt-- Oh."

When Siggy finally goes down his Sword Brethren fucking lose their shit and about 9 of them reduce 40ish Black Legion to about 10 dudes from sheer rage.
>>
>>54757614
I already preordered it but the paper copy is due around the 20th (American, sadly). Was seriously contemplating spending extra to get the epub right now but now that neither uncorrupted WE or EC feature prominently, I'll just wait. Still, I'm glad to hear Sigismund got a fitting end and that the battle was well written.
>>
>>54757679

I think it did as much justice as could possibly be done to something like Siggy vs Abby.

Also, I really think ADB nailed his characterization of Siggy.
