While true to history, I think facial hair is more of a Northerner sort of thing. The Southern lords favour clean faces, though some have outrageous beards and moustaches like Helborg and Schwarzhelm, prim and proper uniforms. One of the many reasons why states like Middenland look down on others like Averland.

>>54705065
Strong for their balance, not their overwhelming cavalry charges. You shouldn't have an army that prides itself on its strategy and tactics AND having super strong cavalry. That's Bretonnia's thing. It's like giving elves expendable troops or wizards to dwarfs.

Given that Bretonnia didn't make it to 7th, much less 8th, I don't think GW was very worried about that.

I do agree with you the Reiksguard should be the Empires only shock cavalry. What they lack and I think they should have is a good light cavalry, like Brettonian mounted yeoman, for chasing down fleeing enemies and harassing archers. At the very least, Pistoliers should have light lances or swords to go with their pistols so they can serve that function while Outriders can be the missle cavalry.

For that matter, the Empire needs grenadiers. They have grenade launchers as it is, they should have an elite grenadier unit that can lob blast charges similar to dwarven miners, but as regular line infantry. An elite version of the musketeer. Or upgrade the Ironsides

>Grenades – from the Spanish granada, meaning ‘pomegranate’ – consisted of small iron shells of one or two inches diameter, filled with black powder. Wolfe’s grenadiers carried their grenades in large black-leather pouches. These were suspended on the right hip from a wide buff-leather cross-belt, worn over the left shoulder and buckled at the front. Above the buckle was a brass match-case, with a chain to hold the slow match needed to light the fuse.

>Grenadiers also carried the standard infantry equipment of musket, bayonet, and ammunition (the latter carried in a black pouch suspended at the front from a black waist-belt). To make it easier for grenadiers to sling their muskets on their backs and also to swing their right arm when throwing a grenade, the broadbrimmed tricorne hats worn by most infantry were replaced by distinctive mitre caps of embroidered cloth.

>Grenadiers were selected for size and strength – not least because larger men could throw grenades further – and their mitres served to enhance their stature. The elaborate embroidery on these, and the rich facings and fittings on their tunics, gave sartorial expression to the high status of these soldiers.

Help me into the Empire, /tg/. I keep getting my ass kicked or bogged down mid-game.

Right now I start out using swordsmen as a frontline backed by Crossbowmen with some spearmen or pikes covering the flanks in case of cavalry. I let the enemy break on my front and shoot the shit out of them. If I have Musketeers I set them in front and have them take a few shots before skirmishing behind the front line. I use Flagellants and Irregulars for flanking.

Should I just be using Flagellants for my front line? They're damage dealers (especially after upgrades) and they NEVER break making them perfect for tying up enemies. A row of Pikemen to catch charges backed by a row of flagellants to move up and hold the enemy while the pikemen fall back after breaking the charge seems ideal. What am I missing here? Obviously artillery is a must and I get that fast as I can, but it takes forever.
>>
>>54705309
I always build into troop upgrades, maxing honest steel and pistol corps and making sure to take leader of men and hold the line. After that rush Deathclaw and then go into his offensive tree to make him a one man wrecking machine

what units can be added to the kislev roster to fill them out?
>>
>>54705328
They didn't REALLY loath them.
The Pope tried to outlaw them, but he did that because that current Pope kept trying to take over a part of Italy who's lands were famous for arbalesters that was just kicking the Pope's ass something fierce, but nobody was having any of that shit.
I imagine heavy cavalry found them annoying the same way people who are being shot at by guns find guns annoying, but they were useful tools used by increasingly large numbers of people.

It was really more of a professional soldier's weapon anyway; cheap but effective, specialized, easy to use but requiring unit tactics and training to utilize efficiently.
>That and being on top of a giant fuck off hill

Franz is still top-tier fighter though. 'muh crecy' aside, Bretonnian society is very much noble bent. As truly noble as the Grail Knights, and thus the king, are, they can only be in so many places at once. Normal human fallibility takes over, and the death of a few lowborn doesn't trouble many lords.

I never end battles without chasing down guys and making sure the force is crippled, so even if they get away all I need to do is hunt them down.
Ironically every Empire game I've played ends up being like Storm of Chaos; Archaeon and Friends gets to Middenhein (or thereabouts) and I smash them, at which point they become much more annoying as I spent turn after turn playing cleanup.

The one time it didn't happen Kislev did...weirdly well against Chaos for a weirdly long period of time and I ended up fighting them at Erengrad instead.

>tigers
Kislivites should have warbear troops, sort of like warhounds or Wargs. But bears, and therefore large shock beasts, small units, terrifying strength. Led by an Ursun priest, these Warbears are considered holy symbols of Ursun.

They already have elite shock cavalry, but if you want something large and monstrous, rather than tigers I suggest Dire Moose. Shod some iron on their antlers and you have something fucking terrifying and roughly the size of a truck.

For troops they should have some sort of Spear Militia with round shields to bulk up their limited infantry choices (Kossars; axe and bow infantry, and Strelsti, Bardiche and Musket infantry)

Gimme a minute to work up a list

Sheer patriotism, kvas and some actually decent light cavalry mixed with Winged Lancers.

But I'd disagree with warbear units. Such a thing is a very rare occurrence, so rare that the last Tzar brought the Cult of Ursun back into focus because of his bond with his bear. It should just be a mount for a Priest and not a unit.

Might have been cursed, I've been playing Bretonnia since Ravening Hordes, clinging to the rumours of the 6th edition book. You'd never think it, but my friends always liked to bust my balls about horses doing better than my knights because of one time they all flubbed their attacks while the horses won the fight.

Men at Arms are pretty good, though. They're cheap and can surprise you if you let them. Once they took a charge of Saurus Cavalry, beat them, chased them down into a block of Saurus, beat them and chased them down into a unit of Salamanders.

I miss this web comic.

Kislevs midrange Cavalry, forming the bulk of it's Godospar forces. It is said every settlement of significant size hosts at least a Rota of these knights.

Kislevs Elite professional cavalry, this standing force represents the best heavy horse cavalry Kislev can offer.

I have this idea for a modification of Strike to Stun:
>If an attack is successful and the player chooses to Strike to Stun, they make an Opposed Strength Test of their Strength against the opponents Toughness. Each piece of armor that the target character has covering their head (except for the bevor) grants a +10% bonus to their Toughness for the purposes of this test. A successful Strike to Stun against an opponent at zero wounds automatically inflicts effect #7 on the Critical Effect - Head table.
Does anyone think it's any good?

Is this crit on the expanded crit charts from Winds of Chaos? The busted teeth one? As a GM I can't reconcile an automatic crit, especially if it stuns someone for a turn, even if it's an enemy. If it's a mook, sure. A somewhat, or even very, important NPC? I would give some kind of test to try to ignore the damage even if it gave penalties to their profile.
>>
>>54706530
I should clarify that this is a 2nd edition rule, a modification to Strike to Stun in order to make it more useful.
>>
>>54706578
Ah, 'knocked out for d10 minutes'. That's even worse, actually. But I can still see the use for it. Useful, but hard to pull off.

I've also planned to add bevors as armour upgrades, because bevors are kewl.
>>
>>54706612
Keep in mind that only happens if you get a successful Strike to Stun after reducing your opponents wounds to 0. It's intended to make non-lethal takedowns easier for when players need to capture someone.

I realize that, it's just the 'automatic' part that sticks in my craw. If my party needed to take someone down non-lethally and interrogate them, they'd eliminate their allies and jump them together. But then again, one of my players is a crafty sonofabitch who can preempt my moves, as I him, because we've known each other for so long, and anyone worth capturing should be dogpiled by the whole party.

None the less they are a decent fighting force in melee. Javelins are a short ranged anti-large anti-armor weapon.

Is it unfair to look at Middenheim as a 'floorplan' for a Bretonnian city? Most other Empire cities looked at in detail are, well, Imperial and more strongly in their Renissance flavored period.
>>
>>54705559
I feel bad I can never release captives, even when I'm not putting my all into the fight. Doesn't feel chivalrous to slaughter a bunch of grumpy dwarves, and there's no non-ransom option for releasing like in Medieval 2. Though I'm not sure if the chivalric code is meant to be strictly kept to and I should avoid all negative chivalry, or loosely abused but intended to force a certain playstyle to try and get its perks. It's less demanding than Grudges at least.

I don't think so.
Middenheim has a strong medieval mindset in design (big fortress, sturdy walls, defensive position placed over ease of access in importance), but it is stil larger then almost any Bretonnian city I should think.
Bretonnia's feudal structure and focus towards a manorial economy does not lend itself well to the development of particularly large cities, and most of those that do exist would have walls and a castle but likely the town itself would be OUTSIDE the walls and not inside because the fortress itself is more important in the medieval mindset.

Compare Mousillon, which while not the most populous area of Bretonnia is one of the most urban-focused in population due to the size of the barony and the inhospotability of the swamp around it.

Fellow WFRP content starved anon here to repost stuff that was kind of well received in a previous thread. There were a few scenarios that this guy uploaded as editable text documents so I'm working on converting those to 2e, they'll be uploaded eventually.

I just had a 'What If' story about a 'less evil' Skaven. He had no reason to kill a blind old man, so he could keep the veil of secrecy while also drink tea and listen to old man jokes. The more he hung with him, the more he valued their friendship.

I'm a snake follow me!

Boyar: Armored and Shielded, Encourage

The hereditary nobility of Kislev, the Boyars are in a constant tug of war between their ancient customs and the desire of the Tsarina to centralize authority within the Ice Palace. However, they are intensely loyal and obedient to the Tsarina, and obey her in all things. Mostly.

(General of the Empire analogue here, command skills give bonuses to infantry)

Ungol Chieftan: Ranged Cavalry, Decent Melee Combatant, Fire Whilst Moving, Duelist, Encourage

The Ungol tribes-men were the original inhabitants of Kislev, long ago dominated by the invading Gadsopars and intermingled with them by marriage. Almost all of their leadership was wiped out during the pacification of the nation, and they have no official say in government. However, the Tsarina values competency above all else, and grants commands to those she see's fit based on that alone, no matter how the Boyars may grumble. Though only unofficially a leader of their people, the Ungol Chieftans can still count on their people to answer their command.

(Begins mounted. Archer hero, command abilities benefit cavalry. Not suited to wading into battle, but difficult to pin down and able to harry enemy champions)

Ursun War-Priest: Melee Specialist, Encourage

Kislev is a land of many faiths, but every village will have a shrine to Ursun the Bear God, protector of the land and god of war and strength. A contemporary and friendly rival of Sigmar, Ursun the Bear represents the strength and endurance of the Kislevite people. The cult had been scattered by the invasion of Chaos just a few decades prior, but was re-united and reinvigorated by the efforts of Boris Ursus, Tsar and Grand Pontiff of the Church

(Not armored like other melee lords, but hits like a truck and can be upgraded to ride a fucking bear. If you want a lord who can get stuck in you get a Boyar, if you want a lord who blows right on through get a War Priest

Kislev is also home to the religions of Dahz, the god of the Sun, Fire, and Hearth

And Tor, the god of Storms and Thunder.

Priests of Dahz and Tor could also be agents. But the Ice Witches are the only spellcasters in Kislev. In fact, they kill any male mages there by tradition, so nobles have taken to smuggling their Sons out to Altdorf if they show the talent. But they can never return home.

how many of dark elves become sorcerers?
>>

Dazhinyi Petty Spells
Some factions in the Cult of Dazh teach the following spells.

Blessing of Dazh: The target you touch becomes blessed with Dazh’s favour, reducing damage from fire.
Blessing of Fire: Your prayers summon a welcoming campfire that appears anywhere within range. It does not consume any fuel, does not ignite flammable material, but does emit heat that warms living flesh (and living flesh only). The spell ends if any living creature draws close enough to be damaged by the heat.
>>
Who else is looking forward to completely ignoring the badlands, and instead going on an anti dark elf crusade with Grombrindal?
>>
>>54708734
Divine Lore of Dazh
Dazh is the God of fire, the sun, and hospitality. He has been worshipped in the lands of Kislev for uncounted centuries and is believed to have taught early Ungol tribesmen the secrets of fire. Priests of Dazh are warm-hearted individuals who take deep pride in their hearths and homes, and many bedeck themselves in sacred gold. Those who call upon Dazh often prefer heat to cold and may feel uncomfortable when the sun sets.

Brilliance: Your prayers summon a blinding wave of holy fire.
Dazh Szheg!: You call upon Dazh to burn his enemies, and a beam of holy light engulfs your opponents.
Dance of the Alari: You ask Dazh to illuminate the night, and he answers with his warrior-consorts— the Alari. The northern sky lights up with eerie fires as the Alari dance. This illumination is enough light to see by.
Rouse the Coals: You utter a prayer celebrating Dazh awakening from his bed of coals in the east. Your target, if flammable, immediately bursts into flames.
Sacred Guest: You invoke Dazh to bless your time as a guest in another’s home. If your host abuses his position or is a poor host, Dazh curses him. The curse could include: fires failing to light, fires giving no heat, or fuel burning at quadruple rate. The curse lasts until the host apologizes to you or prays for forgiveness at a Temple of Dazh.
Wreathe of Flame: Your chants wreath your body in holy flame. Whilst wreath of flame is in effect, you are immune to all damage from fire-based attacks.
>>
>>54708742
Torinyi Petty Spells
Some of Tor’s priests know the following blessings.

Blessing of the Storm's Approach: Your prayers change the quality of the air, fooling sensitive animals into believing a storm is coming. Small creatures and herd beasts automatically run from the priest and will hide or huddle in a tight group.

Blessing of Tor: Energy crackles over the weapon, imbuing it with the favour of Tor.

Divine Lore of Tor
Tor is the God of thunder, lightning, and war. He is popular amongst the war-like Kislevites and was worshipped in the area long before the Gospodars arrived. Priests of Tor are often taciturn and belligerent, and many wield war axes detailed in sacred silver. Those who call upon Tor can be quick to anger, and many are drawn to high locations, such as mountains or tall towers. Prayers to Tor involving thunder, lightning or rain, are known to occasionally bring on a full storm.

Call of Tor: You bellow prayers skywards, and Tor responds with a great peal of thunder.
Cleave the Sky: You invoke Tor to cleave the sky with his mighty war axe.
Do Tor!: You entreat Tor to unleash his fury, and a bolt of lightning streaks towards your target.
Incoming Storm: Your prayers increase the tension in the air, preparing those around you for an incoming conflict.
Thunder of War: Your prayers amplify the sounds of all nearby conflicts.
Tor's Fury: You entreat Tor to bless your war efforts.

My own idea for shock cavalry was basically to take rough riders and port them over to Fantasy. A super-garish Nulner knightly order that makes use of lances fitted with a cruse shaped charge at the end of a very long shaft, who fall back on pistols and sabres when the lance is expended (being sourced mostly from the pistolkorps to begin with).

The explosive truthfully isn't all that much more effective than a hardened point, but the psychological effect of a bunch of bombs going off at once is considerable, especially on cowards or those superstitious about black powder.

Downsides are that, being mostly young noblemen, their cohesion leaves something to be desired, and they're relatively lightly armored, not intended for long brawls.

I called them 'thunder lances.'

In WFRP2, the Knights of the Grail supplement, lets characters that are Bretonnian Knight of the Realm spend their own exp points on either themselves or their mount - with different mounts being able to take the brute monster career and some (griffons, pegasi, etc.) being able to become chiefs too. So this way Bretonnian knights would have superior mounts given enough experience.

Btw, are there any imperials or Bretonnians that ride Manticores besides amber wizards?

Doesn't even need to be lances. Just give them one-use bombs they can throw as a part of charge. Plus and pistol + riding saber.
Cuirassiers with lighter armor mixed up with grenadiers essentially.

For additional tactical versatility, they have option to Stand-and-Shoot with the bombs instead of using them in the charge, so they can harass other units with pistol shots and threat serious punishment if the unit actually goes after them.

They already have a fully realized army.

1.) Fanatics of Tor
2.) Charioteers for Daxh
3.) Ursunite bear-kin, monks fighting alongside bears.
4.) Kossar infantry that switch between bow and greataxe.
5.) Elite streltsi who fight with bardiches and arquebuses, using the bardiche as a firing platform.
6.) Ungol skirmishers, horse bowen who feather their enemies or make use of wither cavalry sabres or light lances.
7.) Winged Lancers, medium cavalry who fight with lance and sword and go into it with a cry of URAAAAAAA!
8.) The elite Gryphon Legion of Winged Lancers, heavy cavalry who fear precisely fuck all.
9.) Light, mobile field cannons, easy to reposition even if they don't hit as hard.
10.) War wagons bristling with gunners that act as mobile hardpoints.
11.) Hag witches who summon up the furious spirits of the steppe to fight or who cast cursed upon the enemy army.
13.) Ice witches who deal brutal damage in battle or who can bog the enemy down with AoE weather effects.
14.) A tzar who rides a fucking polar bear into battle.
15.) A Tzarina who is the most powerful ice witch in history, and he who fights with a magic greatsword which freezes any who are unworthy and try to touch it.
16.) The Tzarina's chekists, who ensure morale remains high among the common rout.
17.) Possible dwarf allies if CA ever implements that.

Whats wrong with it?
>>
>>54708671
Not as an institution, no. Dazh is a God of fire, the sun, and the hearth, so he can provide. Imperial wizards are tolerated, though for sociocultural reasons women are preferred. The Kislevites have a prophecy that a male sorcerer of Kislev will pollute the leylines forever, and all magic capable men of the country are Pacified if their parents can't get them south to the Empire and its colleges or keep them hidden. Resultantly, men often receive a chilly reception even when they're foreign, because they're a source of doubt in the Ice Witch assertion that men are psychologically and spiritually unfit for magic.
>>
>>54709612
Hag witches are from the RPG, and it's known that Ursunites will tame and fight beside bears (the RPG reflects this as well). The chariots I just made up, seemed appropriate - Dazh has his own.

Nurgle: Feytor the rotten - Village exterminated by plague he survived and venerated Papa N ever since.

Tzeentch: Melekh the Changer and his son Cyspeth. Melekh passed an impossible challenge to save his son who was born with a bird like head.

Undivided: Vardek Crom - fucked up everyone until Archy came knocking. He impressed him enough in a fight to join him. Also the guy who made Grimgork think of the northern tribes as fun to krump. Turned out Crom was more of a challenge than his boss who was weak to kicks to the köck.

Yes, and no. Von Carsteins have bloodswain too, and it's unclear how much the strigany enjoy Strigoi feeding, though they are certainly loyal. Blood Dragons disdain taking blood from willing individuals, since they believe it "leads to decadence," and Necharchs don't like to feed, either, but have unique talents in avoiding it. Of course, they do have human servants, who might not all be amoral graverobbers or ambitious necromancers.

Strigoi deformities breed true now, but they aren't, RAW, more likely to be driven to madness by the transformation than anyone else. Their hideous appearance forces them to take extreme measures to survive, however.

Interestingly, the Strigoi known as Gashnag rules a kingdom in the Border Princes, living in careful isolation and only growing abroad and disguised. He has spread a rumor that he is only ugly because a wicked hag cursed him. He is well-loved by his subjects and feared by his enemies; when a group of ogres was killing and eating livestock and peasants, he rode out alone to track them down, slaughtered them all, and put the pike with their heads on it in a victimized village.

No, because it made them more relevant and interesting that plain "elves, but evil".
Dark elves were probably the only instance of well made chaos worshippers that were not "generic northern barbarian". Now they're just, eh, alright i guess, but reading theirbooks i find nothing interesting in their new lore, they're just evil elves who dress in black and like jagged knives

Caledor stopped and they were both snatched by Slaanesh into the Realm of Chaos. As this was happening, Caledor embraced Morathi and comforted her.

I mean everything else. They did not have any major conflict with other races. They could've been involved in a major doomsday war against the dwarfs, who were closer, but never happened. Or Ogres, or, i don't know, tomb kings.
But they were never involved in anything relevant. They only had a minor scrap with orcs, but orcs are already the normal dorfs' nemesis, they can't really share a sworn enemy
So they became irrelevant and died out

I don't contest that Slaanesh prefers elves, but to make it like 40k is retarded. Elves don't live in constant fear of dying because a Chaos God will take their soul, wear soulstones or whatever. Slaanesh infiltrated elven society because they were at the height of their power, and very, very bored. He offered pleasure and sensation unbound. It's Chaos wank without the wank.

I'm talking 40k. The Eldar basically PARTY HARD'd Slaanesh into existence. Sometimes there will be a thing about how he had always existed and was born at that moment because lolchaos, but the elves never had any kind of connection to Slaanesh besides the Cult of Slaanesh popping up to encourage them to Party Hard.

Essentially, in 40k Eldar becoming corrupt gave rise to Slaanesh. In Fantasy Slaanesh corrupting the Elves gave rise to the Dark Elves (and indirectly the Wood Elves).

In a less grimdark world, I could see wood elves and Bretonnian nobles of both sexes having liasons. Partially because the lack of risk of pregnancy means that neither side has to worry about bastards they'd produce with their own species, and partially in an attempt to get some influence or information.

I could still see it very rarely happening even in Warhammer as it is, if a human takes a Wood Elf's fancy for a decade or two. Grail Knights would probably be especially interesting because of their lack of aging, and Damsels are promiscious already. But 99% of the timr, it's arrows and insults about horses.

Half elves exist for one and humans feel uneasy around elves. There's a line from the Blackhearts books that shows that. Two characters who have never seen elves before know who they are and can't help but feel something is strange about them. And they were just 'simple' guards escorting Teclis.

If anyone's interested regarding the success of me trying out a large unit of forsaken (which I jammered on about a couple of threads ago) I played a game today with my WoC vs Empire.

It went much better than expected and allthough I lost the game (fucking Watchtower am I right?) I pretty much massacred his army. My Forsaken, with the assistance of a Chariot of Nurgle, was quite helpful and took out a decent block of Greatswords in two rounds. The real champion of my army was however my Chaos Lord. Armed with the Hellfire Sword he pretty much singlehandedly took out a Steamtank which he followed up by putting some real hurt to a unit of 10 Knights of the Inner Circle and a block of 40 Halberdier men.

Here's the armylist I was using:

++ Standard (Warriors of Chaos - Army Book (2013-4) -V8.8.0.) [2498pts] ++

+ Uncategorised +

Chaos Chariot [125pts]: Mark of Nurgle

Chaos Warhounds [30pts]: 5x Chaos Warhound

Chaos Warhounds [30pts]: 5x Chaos Warhound

Chaos Knights [345pts]: Champion, Musician, Standard Bearer
