How should I get into W40k?

I was thinking about splitting Dark Imperium with my friend but he doesn't want to paint... at all... Also I really didn't want to play Nurgle since I know he'd throw a fit if he didn't get Ultrafaggots

Thinking about getting the "Start Collecting X" boxes but then again I'd be by myself since he doesn't want to shell $100, and another $100 on paints/brushes/tools

Is this actually worth 200pts? I've not had much luck with it, but I've only. Used her in 2 games of 8th. Both games it died immediately because it can't jink and doesn't actually fly anymore (after I went through the hassle of getting it up on a flight stand no less). I used to drop my Brute/Contemptor out of it in 7th, but now idk.

40k is a big time and financial commitment. Don't pick your faction based on what your faggot friend wants, pick the one you want. That said, start collecting boxes are a solid place to begin. You both should also take a look at some of Duncan's painting tutorials on youtube. He's a great resource for beginners.
>>
>>54683549
Because pitting the largest mega-faction, likely comprising around half of all players, against a much smaller subset and telling them that raw numbers is what wins is a totally fair fight.
>>
>>54683539

1. Find people who aren't your faggot "friend" to play with (this is easy).

4. Play game.
5. Tell your faggot friend what awesome funtimes you had without him.

I actually went to a hobby shop and picked up the "Getting Started With WH40k" magazine and got the Primaris Marine with it. Watched Duncan's video on how to paint and picked up some paints later. I'm actually pretty surprised how fun it is to paint, here's my space marine, just need to do the base and his eyes.

Anyone use the gemstone paints for SM eyes? Was thinking about using Soulstone Red instead of Bloodletter for the eyes.

>1. Find people who aren't your faggot "friend" to play with (this is easy).
Can be hard, but yes. Toxic friends will ruin your experience. I didn't realize how much bitching I did until I stopped hanging out with a certain friend who bitched at everything was wasn't his army winning.

>2. Get whatever army you actually want.
This. Don't get whatever is super strong and be a faggot. If you get something YOU enjoy because YOU ENJOY it, your experience will be so much better, even if you lose. It took me waaay too long to grasp this concept.

>3. Build and paint your army.
Don't be like me, that person sitting on 3 unpainted armies with twice as much shit not build yet. I have friends with fully painted shit and they paint that shit right away. Even my friends GF is nearing a fully painted Harlie army and she doesn't even play!

>4. Play game.
Agreed. Unless you're really into the hobby only, fucking play the game. It'll give you motivation to paint and build, too. Play with friends. Okay with people you don't know. Some of the coolest people's I've met have been total strangers wanted to play against my Sisters of Battle because they've never seen them before.

>5. Tell your faggot friend what awesome funtimes you had without him.
You could do this, or just ignore him completely. If he wants to hang out, tell him you're too busy playing 40k.

>Then explain how chaos won (though only marginally so) EoT?
Literally by cheating.

Really wins and losses should be weighted appropriately for how played a given faction is, but that would require excessive thought on the part of GW. On raw numbers alone Chaos would require the total cooperation of almost every xenos player to have a chance, which is something they're not getting (the relentless shitposting of chaos players probably didn't help here).

The thing you want to do with gemstones (this is recommended on the shop page, tutorials, etc.) is use stormhost silver as a layer underneath. Gets the effect done properly and stuff.
If you want to experiment, then go ahead and do something like an orange layer underneath, might be interesting. If not, just go with the proper method.

Thanks, they're called the Sons of Ymir. They were actually almost completely painted as space wolves before I decided I just didn't like the baby blue color scheme so I stripped them and redid things as I also realized I wasn't a huge fan of how GW was handling them.

In terms of tabletop achievements I only have managed to play a few games as I was busy with work/college. One of my missile longfangs (guy with the bolt pistol) once managed to tie up Lilith for 3 turns in closecombat and came damn near close to killing her on his lonesome after she managed to butcher the rest of his squad. Gave him a deathwatch pauldron when I reworked my army as a sign of his expertise in dealing with edgy xeno shits.

Did manage to play in a tournament but as it was 7th edition and since I was up against some very heavily tailored lists things didnt go well. Hopefully things will turn around with 8th edition turning my dreadnoughts into real powerhouses.

So I just learned what my local meta is (just bought my army). It appears to be marines and craftworld bitch elves. Seems titans and giant eldar thingies are also extremely abundant.

What are some good STRATEGIES to fight them with Dark eldar? I only run about 800 points (still need to get my hands on some scourges to bring me to 800).

>>54684032
Focus Blaster/Lance/Haywire fire on the biggest thing if possible - try to get it down to as low of a damage bracket as possible, and if you can't push for enough damage to lower it a bracket, aim at something else. In terms of troops v troops, you'll come out on top, so keep anything that can't severely inconvenience a giant mech out of the frontlines until it comes tumbling down. A Raider with 9 Splinter Rifle-wielding Kabalites and one with a Splinter Cannon can easily rip through anything that's not armored.
>>

Here's what I've managed to get painted in the last week and a half. Quite proud of them, I think I've hit a decent tabletop standard and finally felt ready to start painting my magnetized Knight skeleton. Still need to do the pistons, blend in the bronze with a little bit of Agrax (don't want it too dull, just for recesses) and possibly hit a couple of the sharper than edges with a v. light Leadbelcher drybrush, although I'm worried that will fuck up the black metal that took about two hours of layering washes to get right.

I do have a whole WarConvo, but they're either not painted yet, badly painted in Mars colours that I need to redo in my sexy green or, in the case of my six Destroyers and possibly the Kastelans overprimed and awaiting stripping, which I plan to use meth spirit for.

So I just had what must have been the best game I've ever had since I started this game about a year ago.
>DE vs GSC, 2000 points, we did Konor
>opp made sure it was okay beforehand, fielded a baneblade
>I won rolloff, chose to be attacker
>He still seized
>Blows up my succubus/archon/incubus raider
>My turn, successfully dash in and blow up his magus, deepstrike a dark lance scourge squad in, and use them and my ravager to take 14 wounds off the baneblade despite his CP to give it Cover
>Game progresses
>Make it to turn 7
>Turn 6 we realize we'd both completely missed how the points worked, and hadn't at all paid attention to which units killed what(we thought it was the same method of points as week 1
>Decided to just calculate straight VP for kills
>He ended up winning 20-16 since I had more units
>All he had left was a 4-wound chimaera, vs my full-powered archon, haemonculus, and a trueborn squad in a venom with 1 wound left

I've yet never had a game THIS CLOSE...I fucked up moving my ravager over into his patriarch's/baneblade demo cannon's range, letting him blow it up, otherwise I'd have been able to blow up the baneblade by turn 3.

The rockgrinder in the pic lasted 3 full turns with my reavers, a squad of hellions,
2 taloses, AND my haemonculus

The chimaera drove off.

Obstacle: By putting an open sarcophagus on this it has become apparent that the sarcophagus reclines backwards at an extreme tilt.

On the plus side, shortening the leg nubs on the pelvis so that the dread will have a less wide stance was pretty easy.

So I haven't been able to play any 8th this summer, but I'll be able to finally join in a week or two.

I'm a Necron player, and I've been hearing about "bubble wrapping" c'tan shards being good. What does this mean, is it keeping meat shields in front of the shards? What are the best units for it, and which shard powers are recommended? I've read the "codex" a bit, and the smite equivalent seems solid.

Also, is the monolith finally good? And what should I use to crack open high toughness or high wound units?

>>

so first off:

put your reavers and harlies into your normal formations - they all have keyword Aeldari, you can run DE and harlies in a CWE army.

As for units, I'd pick up some scourges or wraithguards, or maybe a wraithknight.

also, you can run multiple formations, so you can have a formation of fast attacks, a formation of elites, etc.

you get 1 CP every formation you fill, unless you use one of the big formations.

There's Rogue Traders that make their money exclusively as militants, fighting wars that the guard haven't been assigned to, or pursuing conflicts deemed outside or unworthy of Imperial attention, or otherwise sanctioned as privateers when Imperial military forces need an upgrade.

It's not all resource capitalism in a Rogue Trader's life. Well, I guess it is, though in this sense the resource is plunder and you gather it through conflict. Like mining or harvesting in a way, except the ore/harvested substance fights back before it's broken up. Actually that's probably also not uncommon in the 40k galaxy as well.

So Eldar naturally sided with Imps, any other bets? Deldar will probably be up for any Chaos wins, not that they favour Chaos, just that they'll raid IoM supply lines or shit.
Orks will side with whoever, mercs for Chaos or horde smashing into Chaos reinforcements. Depending on who wins the week.
Tau, Nids, and Necrons will probably be made up on the spot for whichever side wins as well. But less easier for me to guess how to fluff it.

We blatantly ignored the person and went on with painting and our discussion like nothing even happened. The person's entire head turned a shade of red I've never seen before or since. We had a good laugh about it once the whole group had quickly moved on.

On an exceptionally small scale, sure. Like, single star system scale.

Larger organizations will be entirely beholden to the navigator houses, or some other influential patron (inquisition, rogue trader, imperial adeptus, etc) that can get them the navigators they'd need to travel large interstellar distances safely.

>>

In 7th it was a 100pt assault Flier with Hover and the Drop Pod assault rule. When it came down, it had to stay in hover, and units that came out couldn't assault the turn it landed. However, the units didn't have to immediately disembark, so it offered a lot of protection, especially with jink.

This is not the case in 8th, where it is a 200pt jump Walker transport or something?

The problem with Scourges is that their kits only come with one special weapon each, whereas Ravagers have all of their options.

>>
>>54684597

I have them in different detachments because the army builder won't let you put different flavours of Eldar into one detachment.

So scourges with dark lances for blasting tanks and what not?

My main opponent is my flatmate's tyranids.
>>
>>54684447

TOTAL: 794

I'm thinking the bomber can easily put me up to ~1000 points but maybe some more infantry might be good
>>
>>54684634
if you're playing nids, you'll want more anti-infantry. perhaps a ravager with disintegrator cannons, slapping splinter cannons on the scourges...

the nice thing about scourges is their Deep strike capability, and you can put 4 heavy weapons on them.

just deep strike them into cover(they're infantry), and watch as their campsite lets them just dominate any targets you aim at.

Unfortunately, I'm not too knowledgeable about other varieties of eldar.
>>
What's the maximum amount of attacks Kharn can pump out?
>>
>>54684622

Four boxes of scourges really isn't that bad a purchase for any dark eldar player. Scourges with just splinter carbines are a solid unit, but you also get a full suit of: Lances, Blasters, Shredders(meh), Heats, and Haywires. That gives you a pair of 10man squads with a set of Haywire and heats, then 4 blasters and lances for the rest of the army.

Ok 40kg,
So I just went out and bought the new marine codex like a good goyim, and I am fuccn STEAMED that they removed wargear options from the chapter champion and the honor guard. I am sure they removed more. I just built my honor guard this morning based off the wargear in the index, but now its invalid as they can now only take power axes. Can you use index entries and point values over the new reprinted entries? its pretty ridiculous if gdubs expects you to rip apart your dudes to match their newest version of a unit. Did GW give any feedback on this?
>>
>>54684657
so right off the bat, looking at this:

don't waste points on the second splinter cannon on the venom

don't waste points on the agonisers for the kabalites, or the venom blade on the scourges. If they're in melee, they're toast.

look into getting a ravager, more scourges, or another venom/trueborn group

reavers, IMO, work better in bigger squads, so look into getting a group of 6. You can run 2 grav talons and 2 blasters that way.

the huskblade is better for the archon, and that -AP wins games, as does the multi-damage.
>>
>>54684718
They have explictly already stated that you can use Index entry options even if the Codex does not have it, using updated prices from the Codex. You're good, man.

The thing is they just are removing stuff they don't make models for, so yeah.
>>
>>54684730

>>
What's the best loadout for Inquisitors?
>>
>>54684681
That's an unreasonable calculation really.

Khorne warlord trait gives him +1 attack if he kills a character. But lets assume he's killed... 1, because why not.

He charges some baneblade or something, dunno. Then he'd get 8 attacks at the start, 8 attacks again and for 3 command points, 8 again.

Now with DttFE, you'd add some more. Lets assume he rolls above average and gets like 6 or 7 more hits.

That gives you around 30. Sounds cool.
>>
>>54684718
If it's in the index you can use it. How the fuck do people still not know this. Rifleman dreads are still in, characters on bikes are still in, everything that is in the index but not the codex IS STILL IN.

it is, guaranteeing wounds on 4 rather than 5 vs non-vehicles, but D3 damage means you're more likely to take down enemy characters with it.

People forget that the Imperium is less a fascist dictatorship than it is a very loose confederacy. The Imperium doesn't have the capability to monitor and enforce the way its one million worlds govern themselves, and is largely satisfied with giving them autonomy so long as the governor pays his tithes.

There is nothing stopping a militant and lucrative human world from selling its military services to other worlds, so long as those worlds aren't xenos or heretic (the Imperial Inquisition DOES care about that).

I had an argument at the shop today. We decided to just roll off on it, but.

I needed an 8 inch charge rolled 6-1. I spend a CP to reroll a single die. Reroll the 1, and get a 4. So I'm good?

My opponent claims that I need to redo the entire roll.

Who is correct?
>>
>>54684931
if you have the dosh, pick up the Gangs of Commorragh game.

it comes with 2 squads of hellions and 2 squads of reavers, for FAR less than you'd be paying normally.
>>
>>54684776
You missed the legion trait that gives +1 attack for charging. So let's assume he kills a single monster/character and charges:

9 attacks + 9 from second fight + 9 extra from stratagem + let's say 6 from DttFE = 33

33 S7 AP-4 attacks that always hit on a 2+. I'm not sure even Papa Smurf could live through that.

You were correct. The Command Re-roll Stratagem only allows you to re-roll a single die.

It's abilities like the Orks "Ere We Go" or Black Templars Chapter Tactics, that say "you can re-roll charge rolls", which force you to re-roll both dice. Not the 1CP Command Re-roll.

How do you know they aren't.

I mean, it's entirely speculation that there is an appreciable difference in the number of Chaos and Imperial players participating in the campaign. Considering that this is a wargame it's likely that less then 10% of the game's population is actively going through the trouble of recording the match results and sending them to GW.
>>

I had thought it was as you said, but while in a gw over the weekend the manager said it refers to the roll, so a psyker test or charge would have you spend 1 to reroll both.

looks good for now. once you have more units, the second splinter cannon on the venom is not worth it - it's a single shot outside half range for 15 points, and only 2 in half range...for 15 points.

as far as picking up new shit:
>more ravagers
>razorwings/voidravens >succubus/wyches/bloodbrides, >incubi(>finecast)
>another venom and some sslyth for the archon's retinue and to allow the kabalites to run a dark lance(again, >finecast)

My current 1000 pt list is something like:

>kabalite warriors x5(footslogging it), one with blaster
>incubi(with succubus in raider)
>blaster trueborn squad in a venom

So, moving onto an actual conversation

I'm planning on making a SM army in the future, and it's likely going to be all Primaris because I see no point in buying models that will be phased out eventually.

go all in on regular plasma incinerators. Just make sure to keep a cheap captain nearby for those over-charge re-rolls. Then overcharge them every single time.

Guy you replied to: That just drives me into further depression that I will never have one to hug.

As for CSM: Don't bother with Star Collecting. Wasted of money. Do what >>54685428 says. He is right.

I'm just getting into the game, and I want to play Sisters. Please advise me, senpai; how much pain can I expect?

newfag here

Getting in with Black Templars, I have purchased:

Tac Marine Squad
Venerable Dreadnaught
BT conversion kit
Emperor's Chosen
Helbrecht

How am I doing so far, and what should I get next? Also, where do I find good paint schemes? I'm not really sure which colors to buy, as I am a retarded monkey when it comes to painting and whatnot.

As your first army, expect your wallet to cry in pain. The army itself is great, but the start-up cost is very expensive

Be really, REALLY fast. Stay in and behind cover. Swathe marines with wyches. Make objectives a priority.
