Reposting previous question to bump op and prevent multi thread.

Is there a good way to go about gluing stuff to bases after applying a texture paint to not get that superglue whitening?

I want to put barbed wire down as nd texture over it, but I think itd look off when I then couldn't drybrush the area under the wires.

You guys think Kabalite legs+Neophyte Hybrid torso would look ok? Maybe with Tzaangor arms and Necroreich gas masks.

Do I need any other types of brushes?

>>54572259
>The paint on here, especially the whites look like you need to thin your paint more.
Will do!

>It helps if you brace your arms or your wrists together to stabilize.
Already doing that :(

>Fine motor control is also a matter of practice. If you are not used to doing something small like this you may also just need time to physically get used to it.
Yeah, I'm an engineering student; I haven't even written on paper in years. Hopefully painting for a few days will help me stop shaking as much.
>>
>>54572721
Seems kinda skinny for legs but may work. I can't really visualize it.
>>
>>54572739
>Do I need any other types of brushes?
You should be able to use these for 90% of what you are gonna do, especially with marines.

I'd recommend getting some extra brushes though, it's useful to have some cheap synthetics around for applying glue for basing or flocking, drybrushing stuff (takes quite a toll on the bristles) and metallic paints (depending on what you use the paint may not necessarily be more aggressive, but the metallic flakes can be hard to get rid of completely making your other paints sparkle. I also use a separate water cup for metallics because of that).

>Hopefully painting for a few days will help me stop shaking as much.
Yeah, just take it easy. I know when I came back to painting a few years I got cramps in my hands.

not nescessarily but i would recommend the following.

flat brush or two for drybrushing.
fine detail (really fine) for the obious.
one medium for all around painting basecoats.
i have dedicated few brushes big and small for the washes myself but that doesnt matter.

remember to use them in a way that the paint doesnt get to the roots of the hairs, that way they keep their shape longer.

A bit too late for that..
Been thoroughly cleaning my brushes but couldn't get the paint out from the roots. Luckily bought those two brushes in a kit of four for like $5 so when I get a pair of better ones I'll try and keep the paint away from there.

there is a product just for that but i wouldnt go that far, pharmacy alcohol does the same for cleaning your brushes thoroughly and also removing paint from metal miniatures. buy that.

and dont buy brushes that label themselves "for watercolour" they are just for that. go to your local craft store and ask for good and cheap brushes that meet your requirements.

i took a picture for you just to demonstrate, 2nd and 6th from the left are for drybrushing for example.
i call them flat brushes ands they will turn in time to the 8th 12 13 16etc but then you will use them to paint bases and sutch for few years.

>>
>>54573168
>>54573050 doesn't really know what he's talking about and it shows. What would happen if you soaked your hair in iso alcohol? Would end up pretty fucked up. If you need to get the paint out of the ferrule area, use brush soap; it has conditioners in it to keep the hair supple. And don't snub your nose at watercolor brushes; look at what they're made of. Sable's for general use, badger makes for pretty good drybrushes. Horsehair shaders generally aren't too useful. I don't like synthetics, but YMMV (some do).
>>
>>54573045
How did you get that white?
>>
>>54573256
Ah nice, already got two of those

>>54573296
I paid $5 for mine and I assume they're the cheapest type of synthetics. So is it bad to use alcohol for synthetics as well? Tried shampoo like I read online and did very little for the ferrule area
Good to know for when I get better brushes tho. So sable hair is my first priority then, should I assume they're piss expensive? Like impossible to find in a normal hobby store?
>>
>>54573296
im pretty sure hes fine with the alcohol solution or water as hes not going to buy expensive pro brushes anyway, maybe some day.

i clean my brushes with alcohol once in a month just to get that tiny bit out that got left in there and tempera deluxe brushes worth of 2 euros (red ones in pic) last for 3 months.

i would have ordered brush cleaning solution with new brushes but the store was out atm just to try it out.

ulthuan grey, shade has been done with administratum grey thinned down only in the recesses.

>>54573263
the issue is the light there, cant get it darker right now in the store

was thinking about breaeking the white up at some parts. however decals, squad markings etc are still coming so he is not done, yet.
>>
>>54573370
Synthetics are plastic; the hairs would probably hold up, but the glue holding them together? No idea.
Natural hair's more expensive than synthetic, but that doesn't mean they're out of reach. You don't need Series 7 to paint! All the manufacturers make budget brushes in the $5-$10 range.
>>
>>54573155
I had an old Cadian fig from when I was a little kid, used him as practice seeing as I hadn't held a brush in 15 years and didn't want to ruin my brand new marines. Fluffed as a chapter serf/homework PDF.

>>
>>54574403
The stubby legs look goofy, but it's the kind of thing nobody will ever notice looking down on it.

Also is it ridiculous? Yes.
Is it endearing? Yes.

The orange buttons/spies on his shoulder could also use a bit of detail, maybe some highlights like for the lens on the weapon. Same for the monocle.
A bit of shade is missing on the square plates of his chest/thighs?

I'm being harsh for the sake of being harsh, but frankly it looks amazing as it is.
>>
>>54574403
Overall I really like what you've done.
This is going to sound really wierd but I think the checkerboarding is too neat for an ork, still really well done though.
The chipping metal effect you've got going on the armour would be nicer if you painted under the bottom of it with a brighter orange highlight to give the illusion of more depth. The yellow on the teef, skull and those round things looks like it needs another highlight too.
The right (his left) silver tube isn't completly painted and I think certain bits of metal (the claw, tubs and those rivets) are a bit bright and could probably do with a wash.
I don't like the base, unpainted sand just looks wrong to me but that's just personal preference.

It's the brightest, "most gold" that GW do as a layer paint. That said, the lighting in the photo might be a little off. I'll try to take another when I'm next at home, but I'm sure you'll be happy with either gold anyway, and adjusting the wash strength and colour will do a lot for getting the hue you want. looks much smoother than on the original, still a bit thick on the left Arm.

Taking Pictures of your Minis always shows mistakes you wouldnt notice IRL tho

Thinning paint isnt as easy as people make it out to be, if you thin too much your paint flows into crevices and makes it look even worse.

The Important thing is to not overload your brush and to wipe of excess on a napkin.

That left arm is a total mistake; was gonna 'unload' some paint on the arm as I had a bit much on the brush and forgot it there to dry while I was painting some other part.. Didn't notice until I was cropping that image.
The paint is probably twice or trice as diluted as on my old model. What do you mean with wiping excess on a napkin?

I'm going to make a left. I'm fine with the headwound, but I dislike the shells on top of the shotgun. I think that middle band needs to be a different material holding them in place(maybe leather like the ammo pouches?) and one end needs to be the brass head with the other the shell case.

Even regular rifle ammo has a two-tone look and them being all gold/copper looks off compared to the level of detail on the rest of the model(s).

If you accidentally pick up to much paint or Water on your Brush you can brush some off on a piece of Paper (Can also do this to double-check the Paint consistency)

I think you should blend the base up the model a bit. An Ork in the desert should have some dust on him, or at least on the legs. It sounds silly but it just seems too clean and tidy.

I think some sand, dust, grime coming up from the bottom with some oil stains leaking down from the top would help break up the big areas of red on the armour.

Man, the Ghostkeel is a gorgeous model, but the legs are a pain in the ass to repose.

I want to modify the gun-arm so the gun pins directly to the elbow/upper arm (so the gun itself is the forearm). Any tips on how to do this? the joint is very small.
>>
I'm starting to paint minis regularly, and I don't want to mooch off my friend's paints anymore. Since there's a Michael's in driving distance, I was planning on picking up a set of paints to start off with. How fucked am I if I go for basic off-the-shelf general-purpose acrylic paints? Since I'm still a greenhorn, I figure that high-quality paint would be a waste of money, but I don't want to go too cheap and get something I can't really use at all.

For the record, I'm looking at a $17 pack of 12 and a $16 pack of 24. A bit over a dollar per 2 oz. bottle seems to be about right, but the color range is limited compared to the 24-pack; however, with the 24-pack being priced at 66 cents per 2 oz. bottle, I'm worried about the quality.

>tl;dr buying paints with no idea what I'm doing wat do
I didn't see anything related to this in the OP pasta; sorry if I missed something.

Don't highlight until you've alteast Basecoated your Model also try using not the tip of the brush but the in a 90° angle to the line you're highlighing.

Just slowly do the stroking motion above the point to highlight and slowly descend the brush until you see the Paint, that ensures you dont put on too much pressure and get a fine thin line.
This works best on Sharp, edges which Marines have alot of

Also get rid of the Mouldlines on the bolter and backpack before its too late. If you are cool drill your barrel
>>
>>54575869
>How fucked am I if I go for basic off-the-shelf general-purpose acrylic paints?
Depends on the quality of the paint obviously. Generally speaking they are made to be used on canvas and not on miniatures. It's thicker and the pigment may not be fine enough to thin the paint properly to use for washes or glazes.
>Since I'm still a greenhorn, I figure that high-quality paint would be a waste of money, but I don't want to go too cheap and get something I can't really use at all.
You totally can use the craft paint to paint minis. But you are better off using it for scenery.
Honestly 30 bucks is gonna get you enough paint for any colorscheme you want to do.

If price is a concern just don't buy GW. Buy Vallejo or Warpaint. They are just as good, come in 17ml instead of 12ml bottles, the bottles won't dry up and are cheaper too.
Honestly just don't buy GW and it's not that expensive.

Least favorite part almost done, only arms and shoulderpads need clipping out and cleaning up.

Now this is my first marine related kit and i would like advice on how people assamble them so painting is easier.

Do you guys glue the arms or bodies on? Or use bluetack? Its kinda bad for posing using just bluetack i think

TL:DR how do you assemble marines for painting?

As for stripping paint in the UK I use dettol (normal brown stuff), leave the minis in there overnight and then scrub with a toothbrush.
clean then detol covered minis off with soap (i use fairy liquid) before you get normal water anywhere near them though otherwise it reacts with the dettol and you get a sticky, bad mess and a ruined model.

He looks really nice, man. Those vials especially aren't even something I would dare attempt, they look gorgeous.
Admech are a pain in the ass to begin with, but surprising easy to do decently with silver spray to get the legs and a few tactical details. And a fuckton of subassemblies, because painting Rangers with backpacks and guns on is pure agony.

Methylated spirits. Get it at Boots the Chemist, put models in a tub or jar with the meth spirit in it and wait 5-10 minutes and scrub with an old brush. It works faster than dettol and you dont get the scum residue you get with dettol

Appreciate it, thank you. The vials were actually fairly simple - the only difficult part was making sure the angle was correct, and I sorta botched that on the glove-shaped vial. I chain-watched Duncan's Cawl video, and tried to follow along as best I could.
And subassemblies are damn near mandatory for AdMech - I never used to do that, but there's so much detail wedged in awkward spots that I can't imagine ever painting these things fully assembled. I find I have a hard time painting units - single models like the Magos I can sit and devote my time to no problem, but ten rangers gets apathetic.

Painted up Lorgar for a friend of mine - it was a pretty awful recast, with the cloak being unusable and some significant detail loss, but it was fun to try out a primarch.

You only get one stalker pattern bolt rifle in the Deathwatch veteran set. There seems to be no other model of this either. It's missing it's ammo pack because the other arm is holding it (pic related). Is there any other kit with a loose ammo pack the same size I can add on?

Flash is to be expeted, Also slight miscasts, depending on the caster of your choice. Clean the models carefully, preferably using a dust mask. The microscoping piece of resin can lodge themselves in your lung, and you do not want that.

If the pieces are warped, just heat them up with a hair dryer or some hot water and bend them into shape. Also you might want to wash the models before priming, just to be sure.

I know store employees sometimes tell you to use a matching colour e.g. warpstone glow for Salamanders or whatever the blue shade is for Ultramarines and I find that it's not a dramatic enough shade. Hey WIP thread, I came from the 40k thread told that you fine gentlemen can help with my query:
Sup /tg/ my next conversion project is, in short, a shrine to chaos built atop a onager dunecrawler in the same style as pic. First of all I have no idea how to go about a shrine, and all help would be wonderful, but manning that shrine I want to be a small army of cherubs sourounding one god-emperor of dune style fat bloated baby face worm.
So if you would be so kind as to relpy could you please:
> What boxes have cherubs or where to get them
> Ideas for a shrine with either models or artwork/fluff
> How to make the wormy thing.
For the shrine I want it to draw the eye with lots of fire and sigils with this great fat lazy baby beast sitting in the middle being fed and attended too by his cherub guard. Lots of machinery and life support keeping him alive: kind of like a living chaos "golden throne".
Keep in mind this is to go along with my undivided chaos force.

Is it really worth the extra work for that little nuissance? I personally would say no but if you still want to do something you can use liquid greenstuff, it does a great job for this.

Or when you are building your next ones and you are using plastic glue just use a tad bit too much at the outer edges, so it squeezes out a bit, then wait till the glue is dried completly! and scrap off the excess. That´s the laziest way and can be quite messy, so be carefull and your mileage might vary

so use at your own responsibility

Liquid green stuff shrinks. This makes is worse at what it was designed for (gap filling on finecast) than regular green stuff. Just saying.

>>54586141
If it really bothers you use the milliput. Milliput behaves a lot like clay in that you can make it soft and pliable by adding more water. It dried rockhard so you can sand and cut it too if necessary.
Just try not to be too messy cause cleaning milliput off of something is a bit tricky.

As the other anon said if you use enough glue to melt the torso halves properly together you can just scrape the plastic later. It's definitely the easiest way to avoid that in the first place.
He's also right in pointing out those areas are gonna be covered with the shoulderpads and the the helmet.

I don't have the minis here, but it was so bad that you couldn't differentiate between the eyes of the Space Marine and the rest of the helmet. A helmet-less Marine had his face turned into one massive red blob.

Basically, all my minis were THIN YOUR PAINTS-tier even though I hadn't even begun painting them, because I naively thought a Mephiston Red spray could be used the same way as a black undercoat spray.

I'll never, ever use a red spray again. From now on, I'll skip right away from black undercoat to painting the red parts myself with a brush, no matter how many hours it takes me.

Nice, I like the black clothing... but it looks a *bit* shiny. Lol, actually looking at it closely, it looks like your rats really are "slaves" as in S&M sexual slaves lol.... I like 'em though
>>
>>54589005
In addition to living in a city, this is a reason why I just handpaint my basecoats. Trying different sprays has always been a roulette wheel for quality in my experience.
>>
So I finished my first two bases... thoughts? I primed the bases black, but I didn't the borders, so there is a bit of black showing through... I think for the next couple I'll prime, but still paint the borders of each brown....

Here's one completely finished...the pic I posted above was the wrong one..that one was only half done.

Can someone please help me identify what this white stuff is, and how to get rid of it? I just bought a bunch of metal minis and its all over them. All I know is it ain't metal, and it crumbles a bit when scratched.

Threw together some counts as hydra gauntlets because I'm not paying the asking price for bits. Honestly, I was hoping the other weapons wouldn't be total shit, but they are. Razorflails reroll 1s to hit, which is redundant thanks to Succubi, and shardnet/Impailer don2 damage, but don't get the extra attack. I can't think ofna single target where I'd want my wyches dealing more than one wound at a time. Anyway, how do they look?
>>
>>54576930
Now you need to add more bits.

Lamps/lights, some broken pipes etc
>>
>>54590780
epoxy? putty? whoever had it probably put it on for adhesive. use an unwanted brush and try applying nail polish remover with acetone, or Simple Green solution. Simple Green will take a lot longer

Uhh yea...but dude be careful... do NOT dose the whole mini with that or it'll melt it.

Sword needs re-doing. You're clearly capable beyond edge-highlights, here might be an interesting read:

Why does the top one have no left shoulder?
>>
>>54591242
it can't hurt metal, but it'll dissolve polystyrene plastics just fine. If you're using it on metal models, dunk away, it won't harm the metal.

>>54591362

Reposting here: I just found a 5 man Longbeards command set from 1999. Idk what to do with it, anyone know how much could it be worth in euros?
Sorry for the round bases, those are the only ones I had laying around.

Pick up some shields and paint 'em. That generation of dwarf models are fucking amazing.

keep them around for frostgrave or something

Tried out a teal sort of colour for it (nihilakh oxide and grey). Not sure if I should repaint it some other colour.

Incredibly dumb newbie question.
Just starting out at this. Planning to play Guard, and have my army all built, but since I ended up with a couple of Primaris from a DI set that a friend didn't want, I figured I'd practice painting on them, since it seems like marines are slightly easier to paint then Guard, since it's almost all one color. So, question is, are there any colors that are bitchier to use then others? Like, are Ultramarines used as a standard because blue paint is easier to work with then, say, yellow, or am I way overthinking this?

So as far as basic ground troops go, how's this look for tabletop quality (the gap aside)? I think I might highlight the horns, but I might wait until all units are at this level to do it first.

Well that's GWs painting style in general, everything looks quite cartoony. I'm having a lot of fun with both painting them and converting them to not end up with complete clones

When using acetone to strip minis, should I put them in an airtight container so it doesn't evaporate?

>>
>>54592813
Just some quick blending with different skintones and some yellows/reds. Almost no washing apart from the clothing and around it
>>
>>54589005

Well you're not wrong about /tg/ having idiots telling you to use Mephiston Red without primer, but you also probably messed up because you either sprayed too close, too far, with an unshaken can, in too humid weather, etc.

Or, there's a 1% chance you got a bad batch of spray cans, but 99% of the time it's your own fault if the primer is fucked up. Did you shake it? How long? 2 minutes minimum? 5 minutes? Did you warm the can with your hands? Hot water? Did you spray at the right distance? Did the spray touch the miniature for longer than half a second?

I'm betting you didn't consider any of those things when spraying. Spray can use on miniatures is NOT something any clueless person can just do properly, regardless of what most people say.
